Unable to connect to a specific wifi network - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 2.4/5GHz dual-band Wireless-AC network at home that my Nexus 5 connects to just fine. At work there are various wireless gateways that run at 2.4 GHz that my phone can also connect to just fine. However, the main work network, which I need to to connect to is a 2.4/5 GHz network with access points all over the building and my phone just refuses to connect to it. It will say 'connecting' for several seconds and then go right back to 'saved'. I have tried disabling and reenabling my wifi, I have tried forgetting the network and reentering the password, and I have even tried setting my phone to 2.4 GHz only (since I had heard something about Nexus phones having strange issues with 5GHz networks), but nothing has worked. I really need to get my phone on this network, so I'm hoping someone can help me.\
In case it's relevant, the 5 GHz band of the work network is on channels 36, 40, 44, 48, and 157, and the 2.4 GHz band is on channels 1, 6, and 11.

[Q] WiFi Issue with one AP

I'm having an issue with my wifi on my S3, but only with one AP. We just installed a Cisco Aironet 1024 AP at our church, and initially my phone connected to it without problem. I've been doing some work on trying to get it configured as I want, and now my phone has issues connecting to it. What is strange is that my tablet and laptop both connect with no problems.
Here's what's happening. The AP is broadcasting on both 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. My tablet doesn't support 5 GHz, but connects to the 2.4 GHz band just fine. My laptop supports both and connects to both fine. For whatever reason my phone doesn't see the 2.4 GHz band, only the 5 GHz one. It will connect to the 5G one fine, but then it drops and reconnects repeatedly. My phone connects to both my 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands on my router at home just fine.
I'm assuming there's something screwy with the way my AP is configured at the church, but it still seems like there's something screwy going on with my phone. I've tried deleting and re-adding the AP, I've tried a factory reset, and tried restoring my nandroid. None have solved the problem. Anyway, I'm at a loss here, so do any of you have ideas of what I'm missing? What could be causing my phone to have issues with this one AP when all my other devices work just fine? I'm currently running CleanROM 5.0 with KindaCrap Mods installed. Thanks in advance!

5Ghz Wifi - "Authentication Problem"

Has anyone else had any problems connecting to wifi on the 5Ghz band? When I connect it goes like this:
Authenticating
Saved
Connecting
Authenticating
Authentication problem
I had the same problem with the Galaxy Nexus but I assumed that it was just because it was old. I would be tempted to say it might be a problem with my router but I have two Windows laptops which connect to the 5Ghz network flawlessly. When attempting to connect my phone to the 2Ghz it works fine.
My router is a new virgin media "Super router" with software version V1.01.26" and hardware version 3.11. My Nexus is the 32GB black from the UK playstore.
Is anyone having similar issues?
Thanks.
Same problem
I'm having the same problem. It's super frustrating. My friend had the same thing happen when he got his HTC One. He eventually had to buy a new router. My Router is brand new, so I would hope that its able to work, but so far no luck.
This is from the Nexus 4 forums, and this is how i get connected to 5ghz wifi on my nexus 5
Just a few facts about 802.11a/802/11n 5GHz. I have simplified things a bit since the detail is not important.
In many countries/areas of the world some of the channels in the 5GHz band used by 802.11a/802.11n are designated as
Dynamic Frequency Selection or "DFS". This means that these channels are shared with military/civilian radar and
perhaps other transmissions. As such any wireless 802.11a/802.11n device using those freqiencies is required to
detect a radar transmission on a channel it is using and switch channels in order to avoid interfering with ("stepping on")
the radar signal. The device may not return to the channel for 30 minutes. Most routers and wireless "cards" in
laptops/desktop computers implement this functionality. Many mobile devices do not implement such functionality so are
not allowed to use the DFS channels.
This creates problems if your router chooses to use a DFS channel and you have a device which is not allowed to use
those channels. The Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 devices fall into the category of devices which are not allowed to use DFS
channels. So if your router chooses to use a DFS channel the N4 and N10 will not see the router at all.
In the US (you can google to see the channel list throughout the world)
Non-DFS channels: 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161, 165
DFS channels: 52, 56, 60, 64, 100, 104, 108, 112, 116, 132, 136, 140
My router "likes" channel 132. I force it channel 44 so I can see it from my N10.
The N10 also implements 40 MHz bandwidth. That is what the 40 in MiMO HT40 specification means. It works very well
using 40MHz *if* your router handles it properly. I have seen some which do not. I do not know if the N4 supports 40 MHz
bandwidth or not. However if the router implements 40MHz properly then it can support both 20MHz and 40MHz bandwidth
devices at the same time. I have both on my router.
Hope this helps.

Solved
I got mine to work! I used the manual input for the wifi. I put in my network's name and password and it connected immediately. Hope it works for you too. :good:
I had this issue as well and had to change pre shared key type from ascii 63 characters to hex 64 on the router

[Q] No 5ghz wireless detection with Lollipop

Hi all,
Strange problem following my OTA lollipop update yesterday. My (UK WIFI version) Shield tablet is unable to detect my router's 5ghz signal. Kit Kat had no problems and all my other devices can still see it fine. I have also tried changing the settings on my router to see if Lollipop is more fussy about frequency/band etc, but still no joy
Anyone else having strangeness with this? Or is it just me?

I flashed the US ROM last night, and during setup it took maybe an additional 20 seconds before the 5ghz routers (including mine) to show up in the list. 5ghz has always been kinda weird for me though. On a few occasions I've had to disable WiFi, wait 10 seconds, then restart so that the tablet will connect.
I also have the UK wifi version, and my tablet even connected first to the 5ghz network, I was actually surprised.
No issues here with 5ghz wireless.

Thanks guys,
It's very odd, because I run wifi analyzer at home and it doesn't show my 5ghz network at all, yet in the office it does show the 5ghz one.
It was working before the update and all my other devices can still connect fine, so a real mystery

Reboot the router?
I'm having this issue with my Nexus 4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/lollipop-5ghz-wifi-t2945330
Upon further inspection, it appears the only 5ghz channels that work are the first couple in band A (36 - 48) Nothing else seems to work.
Can anyone else confirm this behaviour? Try using a 5ghz channel other than 36 - 48
Band A : 5150 - 5350 MHz (channels 36 - 64)
Band B: 5470 - 5725 MHz (channels 100 - 140)
This is pretty rubbish if this is the case, as the band B channels allow a higher output and give me a much stronger signal in my house

I can only connect when I use channels 36-48, Band A UNII 1. Can't even detect the AP with WiFi Analyzer on the shield if I go above 48.
Using the non-US 32GB LTE version in the EU, btw, same frequencies are allowed here as in the US.

Sorry, you're right 48 does also work.
So that's confirmed then, they have for some reason heavily limited the 5ghz channel selection! I wonder why?
It's not a hardware limitation as it was working fine with KitKat, so I wonder whether it's possible to get the other channels unlocked?
Just to be sure, ClownShoes, does channel 140 work for you? I can't test this because my fritzbox router doesn't have an option to change channel width to 20MHz, and channel 140 isn't available to me for this reason.
Same problem for me here. No 5ghz detected when my Xperia Z1 Compact detect it . Even Wifi Analyzer can't see it . I restarted my tablet & stuff, nothin' . I'll try to make a nandroid backup, make a fresh install and I will see the result.
Same problem for me here with my samsung galaxy note 3 32 gb(sm-n9005). If I restart router phone view and connect to 5 GHz. When phone leave coverage are for same hours when come back don't see 5 Ghz wireless. This is strange because I have another phone with windows which work perfect. I will try to change wireless channel if don't work, I thing serious to go back at android 4.4.2
Update: I changed channel from auto to 48 and works.
Just dropping in to say I had the same issue: I had my router on channel 112 and the Tablet wasn't even seeing it.
Switched to 48 and everything works fine now.
Same issue here, hoping Android 5.1 fixes this silly issue. I was wondering why i couldnt see the 5Ghz network at channel 140, 80mhz. had to bring it down to channel 48.
US wifi version here. 5.1 Lollipop, stock rooted.
I can connect to channel 149 with turbo mode (40MHz channel width) & the upper Extension channel, but WiFi analyzer shows my router is broadcasting on channel 153. I tried so many other channels & combinations but this is as high up as I could go & have the tablet connect. It did, however, see channel 161 but got an authentication error & wouldn't connect with the router.
So, back to 149. The signal is slightly stronger & have better throughput than channel 48!
On a side note...I use 5GHz here in this LARGE apartment complex because everyone here is on Verizon FIOS or Cox Communications, so Wi-Fi Analyzer sees 17 (give or take a few for signal strength or weakness) access points around my place & the 2.4 band is completely choked up! There is only 1 other router close by on 5GHz, so using that band is the only option for wireless internet here. I don't use Verizon's wireless AP. They only have 2.4 wireless, no 5. My Netgear simultaneous dual band router is plugged into the back of their cable modem & my Netgear is on 192.168.2.1. That way I can use DD-WRT & my own router instead of theirs for wireless. Easy-Peasy!:good:
I have the same issue. After switching my channel from 100 to 40 the 5GHZ wifi showed up on (two) shield tablets just fine
I believe the SHIELD Tablet only supports United States Non-DFS channels, so 36-48 and 149-165. I personally have mine on Channel 149 and 80MHz bandwidth.

Wifi 5 ghz not working

Hi,
I'm trying to connect to the 5ghz wifi network, but my mi10 pro doesn't really see this network, it only sees the 2.4ghz .
How is it possible?
Thanks

Try restarting the router
non penso che il problema dipenda dal router, altri devices possono vedere la rete 5ghz
I don't think the problem depends on the router, other devices can see the 5ghz network.
I tried to manually set channel 36, and after rebooting it sees the 5 ghz network.
But if I go to check the wifi, after a few hours, it only sees the 2.4 ghz networks, until I restart the phone.

how far are you from the router? I noticed that 5ghz has shorter range than 2ghz on my router so that might be dependent on the distance.
I tried to connect from a maximum of 1 meter from the router, and the result was the same.
I also confirm that if I restart the phone, it sees and connects to 5ghz networks even at greater distances, but after a while (about an hour) I no longer see these 5 ghz networks

Force wifi to connect to only 5ghz

i am using a router which broadcast both 2.4ghz and 5ghz band using single SSID. how do i force my phone to only allow to connect to the 5Ghz wifi network. i cannot turn off the 2.4ghz band as there are other devices in my house that only support 2.4ghz or do i want to split the bands into 2 SSID.
Thank you.
i was able to split my router to 2 different SSID for both bands
In the past there used to be an option in advanced wifi settings that made the 5GHz "preferred" but Google took it out for some reason.
The disabling of the 2.4 GHz or having 2 separate SSIDs might be the only way right now (not sure for a rooted phone tho)
Sent from nowhere over the air...
Yes not sure why did Google remove that option. Any hidden secret code i.e. *#00*# etc that allowed us to make changes to network setting.
Some routers have band steering which will force devices to 5ghz if supported while keeping 2.4ghz for devices that can't.

I turned off Auto Connect on my 2.4ghz, so it stays on 5ghz all the time.

Mine only 1 ssid for both band. Seem like there is no solution and i had to split the bands into 2 ssid.

thanks, but for me both the bands are broadcast into one SSID. which means i can only find one wifi connection and the wireless router will change the band connection based on the signal strength when i am moving around the house. it will change the connection to 2.4ghz when i am in some place where the 5ghz connection is weak. why i wanted to stay with 5ghz when the connection is weak because it give a much higher download/upload speed compare to the 2.4ghz connection which somehow got much weaker internet speed to the extent of unusable.

Buy a new router where you can separate them and then disable or turn off the 5ghz connection
Looks like this is quite an issue for N2Us. I have a 4 year old iphone and it stays connected to 5GHz in the same place and N2U reverts to 2.4. I have band steering and have been really well on all other devices. Issue lies only with N2U.

Mine can separate them but since it is only affecting my phone, I hope the change can be on the phone instead. By separating them, I will need to configure all those devices that can only connect to 2.4ghz. e.g. ring peephole
Did you solve issue? Same problem here :/

Errr...you actually DON'T have one SSID but 2. The band is appended on the name and they are actually 2 different WiFi networks with different names so you could turn off auto-connect on the 2.4GHz one
I use the Wireless Mac Filter on my router to block 2.4Ghz Band for my phone mac address, so the phone can only connect to 5Ghz
If you are using a Samsung phone in the advanced settings for wifi, turn off use randomised MAC address and use the phones actual MAC. This fix has been tested on Netgear routers and works, phone will join the faster 5ghz and still be able to switch to 2.4 if you are at a distance from the router

This is what i did .
(It might give you an very easy option /idea .)
My current setup is a Nokia fibre router that has 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz bands
I bought a reasonable priced wifi mesh 'TP DECO M4 "then
connected it to my fibre router ( ethernet cable )
The TP wifi mesh comes with an Android app fo configure it (settings )
All i did was swicth off the 2.4 ghz band in app, for my TP decom 4 model .
So if i wand to use only 5ghz i connect to my TP DecoM4 ( which is connected to my Nokia fibre router)
My othe devices( that only use 2.4 ghz bands ) i connect dirrectly to my Nokia fibre router, that has 2.4ghz band active ...and also the 5ghz ,
So fo me its a matter of to switch 2.4 ghz on and off in the Android TPlink app .
Hope this give you an very straightforward option ?
good luck
see screenshots below
Hi...
I don't if you already solved you problem but, probably, if you have router which broadcast both band with the same SSID you have option, in router settings, called SMART CONNECT set to the "ON"...
I found a solution that worked for me, i am using a xiaomi router and a s21
Samsung S21 Ultra 5G not connecting to 5Ghz wifi channel
Hi folks . I have a Samsung s21 ultra 5g. I can connect to the 2.4ghz WiFi but more than often I can't seem to connect to the 5ghz wifi channels .I'll have my laptop right infront of me onnected to the 5ghz wifi channel , yet my phone won't be able to the same. My router is netgear nighthawk...
