i am using a router which broadcast both 2.4ghz and 5ghz band using single SSID. how do i force my phone to only allow to connect to the 5Ghz wifi network. i cannot turn off the 2.4ghz band as there are other devices in my house that only support 2.4ghz or do i want to split the bands into 2 SSID.
Thank you.
i was able to split my router to 2 different SSID for both bands
In the past there used to be an option in advanced wifi settings that made the 5GHz "preferred" but Google took it out for some reason.
The disabling of the 2.4 GHz or having 2 separate SSIDs might be the only way right now (not sure for a rooted phone tho)
Sent from nowhere over the air...
Yes not sure why did Google remove that option. Any hidden secret code i.e. *#00*# etc that allowed us to make changes to network setting.
Some routers have band steering which will force devices to 5ghz if supported while keeping 2.4ghz for devices that can't.

I turned off Auto Connect on my 2.4ghz, so it stays on 5ghz all the time.

Mine only 1 ssid for both band. Seem like there is no solution and i had to split the bands into 2 ssid.

thanks, but for me both the bands are broadcast into one SSID. which means i can only find one wifi connection and the wireless router will change the band connection based on the signal strength when i am moving around the house. it will change the connection to 2.4ghz when i am in some place where the 5ghz connection is weak. why i wanted to stay with 5ghz when the connection is weak because it give a much higher download/upload speed compare to the 2.4ghz connection which somehow got much weaker internet speed to the extent of unusable.

Buy a new router where you can separate them and then disable or turn off the 5ghz connection
Looks like this is quite an issue for N2Us. I have a 4 year old iphone and it stays connected to 5GHz in the same place and N2U reverts to 2.4. I have band steering and have been really well on all other devices. Issue lies only with N2U.

Mine can separate them but since it is only affecting my phone, I hope the change can be on the phone instead. By separating them, I will need to configure all those devices that can only connect to 2.4ghz. e.g. ring peephole
Did you solve issue? Same problem here :/

Errr...you actually DON'T have one SSID but 2. The band is appended on the name and they are actually 2 different WiFi networks with different names so you could turn off auto-connect on the 2.4GHz one
I use the Wireless Mac Filter on my router to block 2.4Ghz Band for my phone mac address, so the phone can only connect to 5Ghz
If you are using a Samsung phone in the advanced settings for wifi, turn off use randomised MAC address and use the phones actual MAC. This fix has been tested on Netgear routers and works, phone will join the faster 5ghz and still be able to switch to 2.4 if you are at a distance from the router

This is what i did .
(It might give you an very easy option /idea .)
My current setup is a Nokia fibre router that has 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz bands
I bought a reasonable priced wifi mesh 'TP DECO M4 "then
connected it to my fibre router ( ethernet cable )
The TP wifi mesh comes with an Android app fo configure it (settings )
All i did was swicth off the 2.4 ghz band in app, for my TP decom 4 model .
So if i wand to use only 5ghz i connect to my TP DecoM4 ( which is connected to my Nokia fibre router)
My othe devices( that only use 2.4 ghz bands ) i connect dirrectly to my Nokia fibre router, that has 2.4ghz band active ...and also the 5ghz ,
So fo me its a matter of to switch 2.4 ghz on and off in the Android TPlink app .
Hope this give you an very straightforward option ?
good luck

Hi...
I don't if you already solved you problem but, probably, if you have router which broadcast both band with the same SSID you have option, in router settings, called SMART CONNECT set to the "ON"...
I found a solution that worked for me, i am using a xiaomi router and a s21
Samsung S21 Ultra 5G not connecting to 5Ghz wifi channel
Hi folks . I have a Samsung s21 ultra 5g. I can connect to the 2.4ghz WiFi but more than often I can't seem to connect to the 5ghz wifi channels .I'll have my laptop right infront of me onnected to the 5ghz wifi channel , yet my phone won't be able to the same. My router is netgear nighthawk...

Hi all,
Strange problem following my OTA lollipop update yesterday. My (UK WIFI version) Shield tablet is unable to detect my router's 5ghz signal. Kit Kat had no problems and all my other devices can still see it fine. I have also tried changing the settings on my router to see if Lollipop is more fussy about frequency/band etc, but still no joy
Anyone else having strangeness with this? Or is it just me?

I flashed the US ROM last night, and during setup it took maybe an additional 20 seconds before the 5ghz routers (including mine) to show up in the list. 5ghz has always been kinda weird for me though. On a few occasions I've had to disable WiFi, wait 10 seconds, then restart so that the tablet will connect.
I also have the UK wifi version, and my tablet even connected first to the 5ghz network, I was actually surprised.
No issues here with 5ghz wireless.

Thanks guys,
It's very odd, because I run wifi analyzer at home and it doesn't show my 5ghz network at all, yet in the office it does show the 5ghz one.
It was working before the update and all my other devices can still connect fine, so a real mystery

Reboot the router?
I'm having this issue with my Nexus 4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/lollipop-5ghz-wifi-t2945330
Upon further inspection, it appears the only 5ghz channels that work are the first couple in band A (36 - 48) Nothing else seems to work.
Can anyone else confirm this behaviour? Try using a 5ghz channel other than 36 - 48
Band A : 5150 - 5350 MHz (channels 36 - 64)
Band B: 5470 - 5725 MHz (channels 100 - 140)
This is pretty rubbish if this is the case, as the band B channels allow a higher output and give me a much stronger signal in my house

I can only connect when I use channels 36-48, Band A UNII 1. Can't even detect the AP with WiFi Analyzer on the shield if I go above 48.
Using the non-US 32GB LTE version in the EU, btw, same frequencies are allowed here as in the US.

Sorry, you're right 48 does also work.
So that's confirmed then, they have for some reason heavily limited the 5ghz channel selection! I wonder why?
It's not a hardware limitation as it was working fine with KitKat, so I wonder whether it's possible to get the other channels unlocked?
Just to be sure, ClownShoes, does channel 140 work for you? I can't test this because my fritzbox router doesn't have an option to change channel width to 20MHz, and channel 140 isn't available to me for this reason.
Same problem for me here. No 5ghz detected when my Xperia Z1 Compact detect it . Even Wifi Analyzer can't see it . I restarted my tablet & stuff, nothin' . I'll try to make a nandroid backup, make a fresh install and I will see the result.
Same problem for me here with my samsung galaxy note 3 32 gb(sm-n9005). If I restart router phone view and connect to 5 GHz. When phone leave coverage are for same hours when come back don't see 5 Ghz wireless. This is strange because I have another phone with windows which work perfect. I will try to change wireless channel if don't work, I thing serious to go back at android 4.4.2
Update: I changed channel from auto to 48 and works.
Just dropping in to say I had the same issue: I had my router on channel 112 and the Tablet wasn't even seeing it.
Switched to 48 and everything works fine now.
Same issue here, hoping Android 5.1 fixes this silly issue. I was wondering why i couldnt see the 5Ghz network at channel 140, 80mhz. had to bring it down to channel 48.
US wifi version here. 5.1 Lollipop, stock rooted.
I can connect to channel 149 with turbo mode (40MHz channel width) & the upper Extension channel, but WiFi analyzer shows my router is broadcasting on channel 153. I tried so many other channels & combinations but this is as high up as I could go & have the tablet connect. It did, however, see channel 161 but got an authentication error & wouldn't connect with the router.
So, back to 149. The signal is slightly stronger & have better throughput than channel 48!
On a side note...I use 5GHz here in this LARGE apartment complex because everyone here is on Verizon FIOS or Cox Communications, so Wi-Fi Analyzer sees 17 (give or take a few for signal strength or weakness) access points around my place & the 2.4 band is completely choked up! There is only 1 other router close by on 5GHz, so using that band is the only option for wireless internet here. I don't use Verizon's wireless AP. They only have 2.4 wireless, no 5. My Netgear simultaneous dual band router is plugged into the back of their cable modem & my Netgear is on 192.168.2.1. That way I can use DD-WRT & my own router instead of theirs for wireless. Easy-Peasy!:good:
I have the same issue. After switching my channel from 100 to 40 the 5GHZ wifi showed up on (two) shield tablets just fine
I believe the SHIELD Tablet only supports United States Non-DFS channels, so 36-48 and 149-165. I personally have mine on Channel 149 and 80MHz bandwidth.
I have both in my home with the same WiFi ssid (and pwd). How do I know to which I am connected? Is there a way to have the Note 5 default to 5 Ghz before trying to use the 2.4 Ghz?
You'd know which one you are connected to because the 5 Ghz usually has "-5ghz" written after the ssid. If not, then settings have been changed in the router and it would be a good idea to revert it back.
To have your phone only connect to 5ghz, just make it forget the other one and it will connect to 5ghz every time. There may be a more technical way to favor 5ghz that I'm unaware of, but this is the most simple.

He already said they use the same ssid, so your advice doesn't apply.
I have a similar setup as OP - both 2.4 and 5 are identical and AP does automatic band steering. I look at the phone Mac address, and then compare on the list of connected devices on my AP to see what band it is using. Might be an easier way but that's how I do it.

Thanks guys. I actually have two wireless routers in my home that each have both 2.4 and 5.0 ghz. I have them both set up with the same ssid and pwd so all the connections are seamless for any device anyone may be using in the home (on different channels of course). Just thought there'd be a way to tell with this setup:
Here are pictures of my setup (FIOS-WYLIC) across both bands using WiFi Analyzer -
Update - on my router page it shows all the connections and my Note 5 is automatically connecting to the 5ghz channels instead of the 2.4ghz ones. Excellent to know when both are available with the same ssid and pwd that your phone selects the 5ghz. Well designed Note 5!
I have my frequencies setup under different SSID's. I've had it where both frequencies had the same SSID but different passwords - which frequency you connect to would then only depend on which password you enter. It's all about your setup.
"Good" access points (certainly anything business rated or better) do automatic band steering, where the AP directs a device to 2.4ghz or 5ghz depending on loading and client capability.
In those cases it requires the ssid and passwords to be identical on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands.

Hello, my Galaxy S7 doesn't detect any 5GHz WiFi AP's.
Have searched some and see that I'm not the only one and some S6 users also have this issue.
Can anyone who also have this issue report it here with firmware versions. (Dial *#1234# to get the info)
My phone came With build G930FXXU1APB6 and now updated to G930FXXU1APF2, but that didn't fix the problem.
The csc is G930FOJV1APF2
And of course if anyone knows if there is a fix please post .
Is it software or hardware broken or did Samsung make some phones with 2.4GHz WiFi only modules?
is your phone stock? have you tried connecting to other 5ghz network other than your home´s? could be a router issue
1. try doing a factory reset (will lose your data) to see if it fixes the problem
2. consider installing new firmware
Maybe your router is not configured correctly. You can choose that the 5ghz network only supports 802.11b for instance. Check that your settings allows all WiFi.

You need to check your Router settings.
If your router has the same SSID for the 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ bands rename the 5GHZ SSID also if you have an option that says Sync with 2.4GHZ under the 5GZ settings set that to No, if it is not already set to No..
For example if they are both called Router just make the name of the 5GHZ SSID Router-5GHZ, save the changes and wait a couple of minutes.
Turn off the wifi on your phone then back on again (do this in the Settings>WiFi) you should see the 5GHZ router name appear in the list of available devices as well as the normal one, just tap that put in the password and connect
This should work, the usual problem is that the router SSID where the names are the same the phone will connect to the 2,4GHZ as default, not always the case but the general cause of it not connecting to Smartphones.
I use the same name for 2.4 and 5 GHz, the phone automatically connects to the best available network. 5 GHz when I'm close to the router, 2.4 GHz when I leave the range of the 5 Ghz. When I return to the 5 Ghz range it connects to it automatically, but not always, then I have to stop and start the WiFi on the phone again to get on the 5 ghz.

Still no 5GHz Wi-Fi
Hello, I have checked my router and also tried on other 5GHz routers, but still my phone doesn't see any 5GHz channels.
Has anyone tried a firmware for another region?
Am I really the only one on XDA with this problem?
WiFi country code
I have noticed that my 5 GHz does work, but ONLY if the router is manually switched to channel 36 for 5 GHz. My router is WRT 1900AC (4 antennas, bought from US)
I have read that it could have something to do with the wifi country code.
Max link on 5 GHz it is max 200 mbps, which still seems very low, since my non MIMO/single channel crappy laptop wifi also gets 200mbps.
And I heard people getting more then 800mbps ont their S7 phone.
Flashing my phone with an official unbranded firmware from the Netherlands (PHN CSC file), did not fix the WiFi issue.
WiFi Country Code in System file
I have come across this forum in which a user claims a fix, but the phone needs to be rooted.
Does anyone know if this is really the case? My phone is not rooted.
Was there ever a fix here?
My S7 (SM-G930F - BTU, using Oreo build U5ESD2) does not see any of the upper 5 GHz bands. I am trying to connect to a router that is configured to output ONLY on band 149, so there can be no 2.4 GHz "confusion." Changing the configuration to other upper 5 GHz bands doesn't help.

just change 5ghz ch no, 149 to 161 । that's it , no need to change firmware
Hey everyone,
So I've been expernecing this problem for over month. Basically im connected to my wifi on 2.4ghz and suddenly my connection will drop and I check that its now connecting to 5ghz but it doesn't actually connect to it its just keeps connecting and disconnecting every second until it finally connects back to 2.4ghz. And then after few minutes of strong connection ill drop again and same thing.
Im only experiencing this at work. There isn't 2 different ssid for 5ghz or 2.4ghz just one ssid, I was able to find out that they are using dual band router so I can't change anything the router part. is there an app or some setting I can toggle with to enforce 2.4ghz band only? Ive already turned off smart switch and scanning but problem still here.
Thanks in advance!!
Dear All
I own an android phone running Android 8.1. I looked at everything inside WiFi Setting but I can't find an option to selection only 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequency. Compare to my 10 years old phone runing android 4.4.2 which has an option for 2.4GHz or 5GHz. Is there any App that help to get this option enable or any workaround? My workplace use Band Steering which 2.4GHz and 5GHz use that same SSID and my phone always connect to 2.4GHz. I have to turn wifi on/off a few time to connect to 5GHz.
What radio bandwidth actually can get used depends on both the phone's hardware and the Wi--Fi network provider.
You can run this app to see what is possible:
https://apkpure.com/wifi-band/com.igorlazunna.android.wifiband
I'm no doubt Both of my phone and WiFi AP support 5GHz(Dual Band).
AFAIK Android OS has some algorithm for choosing the best Wi-Fi connection. I don't know what it is. But I think it tends to prioritize faster Wi-Fi networks over stronger ones.
5GHz is always faster than 2.4GHz regardless of signal strength for my experience so I just want my phone connect to 5GHz unconditionally. With my old phone, when I set to 5GHz only, it won't connect to any 2.4GHz event if 5GHz is not available. That's my goal.
