So I've just installed ICS on my N1 and finally the graphical interface has become properly smooth. But that ment repartitionning, which in turn ment I needed to use app2sd. But opening apps now feels slower than before, and I believe the app2sd solution is the problem. I am currently using the 4GB card (class 2?) that I think came with the phone, but new cards are dirt cheap so if anyone knows a card that will be substantially faster I would be interested. The main consern is random access speed I believe, so I feel looking at the rating (class 10 and whatnot) is no use. I was looking at a sandisk mobile ultra card based on this review: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/microsdhc-memory-card-performance,3011-12.html
And I am probably going to buy a 16GB card, maybe 8 or 32 if there is a really good one of those. Any recommendations?
While you're at it, does our Nexus One support UHS-1 cards like this?

Not that I really know the answer, but it seems highly unlikely. The cards should work in the phone, but you will probably not be able to use the UHS mode (increased clock-frequency).

To answer my own question:
I found this thread, which was quite informative, although full of jabber in between the good posts. And it seems in general the cards with the lowest rated speed perform the best for these purposes, and your safest bet is the sandisk standard class 4 (previously class 2) cards. The samsung class 10 card seems to be a good allrounder, and gives twice the sequential speed at the cost of half the random access speed(this is still more than 10 times higher than most class 10 cards). So I'm probably going to get the sandisk card just to be safe.

I heard that the 64GB Sandisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-1 chip is good but doesnt have the full 70mbps reading speed and 20mbps writing speed support on a galaxy s4. It would really help me decide if you suggest what kind of sd card will be fit for the GS5. Thanks!

I have a samsung 64GB. As for the class, it's always class 10, any lower and your giving away performance. As for the type, not sure what that is, for me the type is MicroSD, and all class 10 64gb microsds are UHS-1. I have never had any performance issues with my card but i know sandisk released a gold edition version of their 64gb card that gives an extra 10mb boost, but not sure if its worth it for double the price of any other 64gb, if not, 70mb/s is more than enough

well I went through 3 32GB SanDisk card's in less than 8 months, I invested the cash and got back then the 32GB Samsung card and is being working without a glitch for almost 2 years in the dot. Needless to say, I bought a 64GB Samsung card this go around.

Will the Sandisk Ultra keep up while using the 4k on a Galaxy S5? By means of video shooting and video playback?

What's the story behind those 3 SD Cards from Sandisk? Because that's what I'm planning to buy.
I got my card today. Samsung micro SDXC UHS-I Pro Class 10 64GB. Read up to 70MB/s Write up to 20 MB/s.
The S5 is compatible with 128GB cards, but way expensive.
I've used a SanDisk 64GB card for over a year with no issues. Before that a 32GB, which was the same. SanDisk have the largest market share in the UK by some margin (which aggrieves Samsung). I never did see intrinsically higher return rates on SanDisk cards or Samsung cards. Both brands are good, both make there own flash memory (Samsung would tell you they make ALOT of flash memory).
You however get lots of fake SanDisk cards (better brand equity), I've even seen reputable retailers get duped, which tends to happen less with Samsung.
Buy from a reputable retailer and which ever brand you choose you will be fine. I personally prefer SanDisk but I don't have a rational reason for it. 128GB will drop in price over the next 6 months (obvious really). So I'd save your money. Faster cards are better and for the small difference in cost it's worth it. Although be aware that you are not paying for better quality "memory" as per se but a faster controller.

the best micro sd card for this beast would be from samsung. they announced the new line up of micro sd cards. i will suggest u to get Samsung 64Gb Pro version as its the fastest of the newly released bunch. never give up on the performance of such a vital necessity.

Any class 10 70mb will keep up with 4k.my Note 3 films in 4k and i have the samsung 64gb which keeps up without any hitch

Agreed. The new release by Samsung from the EVO/PRO line would probably be best.
I'll probably pick one of those up when they drop a bit in price.

I have a class 10 64gb Sandisk I paid £30 for about 6 months back. I have never had any issues with it in my S4 and the speed is fine. I will be swapping it over to my S5 on Friday and expect pretty much the same.
I am interested to see what speed I will get via the USB3.0 feature though.

I was contemplating the 128 but i don't think i'll ever use it, and im a music and movie junkie, but i don't keep movies (or tv shows) on my phone after i watched them, so i went with a 64gig sandisk mobile ultra. I also don't believe the phones can take full use of the higher transfer rates of some cards (48mb/s+ cards) so i went with this guy here:

These phones won't take advantage of the higher speeds of the Extremes and Pros unless you're removing the card from your phone and plugging it into a USB 3.0 card reader each time. So The 48MB/s Ultras and Evos are good enough.

Got good reviews and has the bandwidth for 4K. The Note 4 will be my first 4K device so I wanted to make sure I had a good card to go with it. Dont need 128 GB (yet) personally as I stream pandora for my music. I am sure the sandisk cards would have been just fine as well.
I have the 128GB microSD card and it's great! Super fast, and stupid high capacity. But with picture and video file sizes getting bigger and bigger, and phones doing more and more, I believe that the space will come in handy. I've currently got LOTS of HD movies on it in the Note 3... but if I need the space on the Note 4 I can easily delete them.

Really makes no difference since the phone does not support the UHS-I speeds. The SanDisk Ultra would be as good as a more expensive ones.
sanddisk and Samsung are both highly rated as very good quality. You can't go wrong with either. I suggest which ever one on sale or cheaper that's the way to go.

Decided to go with it since Lexar (micron/crucial) makes the best chips and the warranty is better than the one provided by Samsung and SanDisk. But most importantly, it's faster than the current SanDisk.
I wish there was an option to up the voltage to the SD card readers in Samsung phones. I get that they lower the power for battery life and heat, buy I also want to get decent transfer speeds with my phone. No real point in getting an SD card above 48MB/s for phone use only as the required voltage for UHS-1 is not available. I do believe that all Snapdragons since the 600 support UHS-1 though. Too bad.

128gb max is the microsdxc alone (but that's only because there aren't any 256GB microsdxc cards on the market)

Running SanDisk ultra sdxc 128GB in my GN3 and mt Go Pro Hero3 black .
Like computers, our devices tested/rated for what memory is currently available when the device is released.
For example GN3 is rated for 64GB sdxc, but 128GB works fine.
For what was initially stated in the OP.
The variants of "sd" are based on capacity. With few exceptions to some 4gb mSD cards, sdhc is 4gb-32gb , and sdxc is 64+GB for meow. Until something greater than 128GB is released, which may or may not be sdxc or variant of.
Whats the max speed can the note 4 read on sd card? Same as note 3 and other recents samsung phones?

Lexar is every bit as good as Samsung if not better. they're owned by Micron/Crucial and are known in the photography and computer sphere for making the best chips out there, but I guess their stuff is marketed as more high brow so the average consumer isn't acquainted with the brand. Note that the Lexar cards have lifetime warranties for a reason.

I spend a few hours searching the net for a benchmark comparison between samsung 64gb evo and pro micro sd cards and I could not find any. I had a bad experience with sandisk and that is why I only really considered samsung cards.
Cards specs:
Evo: speeds are Up to 48 MB/s. I've seen many tests which proves read speed of around 45-48mbs and write speed of 19-20mbs.
Pro: Up to 90MB/s Read (UHS-I Interface) and Up to 80MB/s Write (UHS-I Interface).
However I was not sure if note 4 can actually utilize (i.e. take advantage) this serious speeds.
Anyway I bought the 64gb pro and I can tell you this little card is extremely fast. Indeed I get the 90-80mbs speeds with an uhs-i adapter connected to my laptop.
As for the note 4, it is still faster than the evo, but not by much. The write speed is 28.99mbs. (so, it is still about 50% faster than the evo) - screenshot attached.

Nice work.
I have 64 gigs evo and get speeds pretty much of the order of what you mentioned. And i think evo is alright for note 4 unless you want to plug the card in your laptop.

Agree with you mate, evo is enough for note 4.
However we paid a lot for the note 4 and I think this phone deserves paying £25 more (compared to evo) and get the fastest possible card.
I was stunned when I copied 200mb of mp3s for like 2 second (that is when I used it with the laptop).

Will the Galaxy Note 20 still keep the SD card and the internal storage separate and use the SD card for media, or does it combine the two in to a larger storage area?

It is separate. Like having an extra HardDrive on your computer. You can store media files on either or both of them.

It can't merge the two since it uses different technology.
Internal storage is way faster than an SD card.
The two are separated.
"way faster" ..
the SD storage is "way fast" enough for many things you plan to do with the phone. get a fast high speed card (i picked up the 1TB sandisk) .
burst mode on the camera will be forced to internal storage (user cant change that) . i did some early tests yesterday with the phone's video camera in different formats and aspect ratios and the card handled the throughput nicely.
but for installing application, I would prefer on internal storage rather than SD card even with an A2 rated card.
Yes because the constant IO and polling the card consume the battery faster

If you want best speed performance go with the A2 rated Sandisk Extreme or Extreme Pro. They are expensive of course. For my day to day use I just settled with Samsung EVO Plus microSD. Does the job competently at budget friendly price.

I have that one in 256gb it's okay but nowhere near as fast as my lexar 1800x but its only avail in 128gb and is 2x the price of the sandisk for half the storage...worth it? Probably not.

I just bought Kingston 'Canvas Go! Plus' 256GB card, also rated as A2 and I have found a few benchmarks showing it is a bit faster than the Sandisk Extreme Pro at a cheaper price . I have my doubt too but gonna try it when the card arrived. The Kingston card has a lifetime warranty, will see how it performs. I am very curious too. Let me know about that Kingston card once you get it. Run some benchmarks on it.
I literally just ordered the Sandisk 256GB 15 minutes ago on Amazon for $48. The Kingston is $49. The Sandisk is rated 160MB Read and 90MB write. The Kingston is 170MB read and 90MB write. I checked out that review you posted and seems like a great card. I'm thinking about cancelling my order and getting the Kingston card instead.

From my research the Note 20Ultra doesn't support the higher end micro SDcards anyway. I can't remember the technology names (the different classes of Micro SD cards) but I did some research on what SDcard to get and the super fast micro SD's are useless in the Note20 since it doesn't have the proper tech to support the higher speeds. I wish I could remember how to explain it technically, but I can't remember the terms to use.

I literally just ordered the Sandisk 256GB 15 minutes ago on Amazon for $48. The Kingston is $49. The Sandisk is rated 160MB Read and 90MB write. The Kingston is 170MB read and 90MB write. I checked out that review you posted and seems like a great card. I'm thinking about cancelling my order and getting the Kingston card instead.

In my country the price differ quite a lot so I get the Kingston. Definitely gonna try it esp. on random read and write. You mean UHS-I and UHS-II right? Agree with your point, Note 20 Ultra does not have UHS-II capability, so focusing on random read and write is more logical.

Yes, UHS I vs UHS II. I'm no expert on SDcards. I did do my research though and found out that the super high-end Micro SD's will not reach their full potential on the Note 20 Ultra. I was trying to find out which one to buy to give me the fastest performance.
I just went to amazon and cancelled my order for the Sandisk and was going to order the Kingston. But I got to checkout and the Kingston wouldn't get here until September 24th! So I ordered the Sandisk again since it will be here on the 2nd
I'd still like to know how that Kingston performs for you. I'm going to run some benchmarks on my Sandisk as well. We could make a thread about it to help other XDA users decide which to get.

Yup, we can compare the performance between these 2 cards. Besides speed, another thing to take into consideration is reliability. My previous S7 Edge is running Samsung Evo card and works reliably for almost 5 years now, although it is slow. This Kingston 'Plus' card is newer version of Canvas! Go, so not sure about the reliability. Sandisk Extreme Pro maybe a more reliable card.
For benchmark, not sure which app to test on phone instead on PC. I have 'Anvil’s Storage Utilities' result for the Sandisk card (128GB) tested by myself and comparing the benchmark results with that review link, Kingston actually surpass Sandisk by a bit. Probably can't feel it in real world use XD.
Btw, I have the Exynos version of Note 20 Ultra. Sadly my courier is taking way too long to deliver my card, bought my Kingston on 17th Aug actually

I'll have to do some research to find out the best way to test on the phone. I have the SD version but I doubt the SOC matters in a drive speed test.

I have received my Kingston card and tested it. Using my office PC (WD Blue 1TB SSD) and same card reader (Ugreen brand) for both cards.

From the benchmark, Kingston win over Sandisk on almost all criteria but keep in mind that I only tested on 128GB Sandisk card.
Doing a file transfer (Windows 10 ISO file) the speed for Kingston is around 80MB/s while the Sandisk is 75MB/s. I am happy with my purchase Now on my Note 20 Ultra, I have encrypted it but not sure whether it will have an impact on the performance, my guess is it will.

I have edited my reply just now, add in Crystaldiskmark results. I guess there is no significant difference between these 2 cards. Both of them are better than Samsung's Evo XD. Probably best cards for our Note 20 for now.
