[Q] Is pulling from micro sd card as fast as internal memory

(1) I'm going to buy a galaxy s4 when it comes out. I know it would probably be cheaper to buy the 16 mg version ,then buy micro sd card.
My question is does the phone work faster from the internal memory or does it pulll info just as fast from a micro sd card?
(2). Would sandisk extreme pro be a good choice ?

I was told that sandisk doesn't work well with Samsung brand so I suggest you to buy Samsung sd card as well

i have been using the SanDisk Ultra 32 GB MicroSDHC Class 10 and it works fine in the sg3
just make sure you get the ultra class 10 as it has faster speeds than the lower class cards
put the things that need to pull up fast on the internal memory like apps and put everything else on the card like music and things you wont notice a difference on

Not always true. I recommend reading benchmark test on the card you want to by and its competitors. I've seen some benchmarks where a Class 6 Sandisk beat out a Kingston Class 10 in the past in "some" writing areas.

I had a nightmare with sandisk in general both in my dslr and GS2. I use Lexar now and never had one issue. Sandisk has great customer service though. Refunded all 3 of my pro cards.

If the Galaxy S4 supports the UHS sdcards (45mb or 90mb read/write) then that would be as fast as you need imho.

This is extremely true! Never trust an SD card by what the claims are on the box. I have purchased many SD cards (all brands) over the last couple of months. 6 class 10 Sandisk all 32GB from different sources (Amazon, Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc...) and none of them benchmarked in at class 10. Most were between class 4 and 8 write speeds with read speeds being a bit better. 2 PNY 32 GB class 10 cards. Both of those tested above class 10 performance but died within 2 weeks. I have not been able to find and Amazon Basics 32 GB Class 10, but the other Amazon cards I have tried have worked well. Samsung cards seem to work well as well, but I have not benchmarked any of them. It really seems to be a crapshoot if you get a good card or not. Each specific device seems to like some brands better than others. Also, there is a huge (and I mean huge) problem with counterfeit cards and misrepresented (changed) class of cards flooding all markets. So good luck and let everyone know if you find a good card.

I also would say, download and do a full write format on the card with sdformatter https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/ prior to use. I have gotten many 4 speed cards to record hd video on my t3i just by using that software, when a regular format won't work.

My galaxy s3 supports uhs class 1 64gb sd card. .. sure s4 will support it..

AFAIK, our phones don't support UHS-1 format. So I believe it's capped at class 10 for us. I don't think these will benefit us very much.

I dong think the extreme sandisk worth it. Besides it only support 16 gb no more than that. I suggest take the Sandisk Ultra microsdxc or micor sdhc. Its working and fast but worth it

Personally, I find the Sandisk Ultra to be the best cost versus speed with storage in mind. I've had the 64GB since I bought my GS3 last year and it has worked great with holding nandroid backups and anything else that is bulky.

I have done some reading :cyclops: & find out their are user which are having problem with sandisk ultra series cards, and i am glad that you guys don't have any those kind of issue.

I was contemplating the 128 but i don't think i'll ever use it, and im a music and movie junkie, but i don't keep movies (or tv shows) on my phone after i watched them, so i went with a 64gig sandisk mobile ultra. I also don't believe the phones can take full use of the higher transfer rates of some cards (48mb/s+ cards) so i went with this guy here:

These phones won't take advantage of the higher speeds of the Extremes and Pros unless you're removing the card from your phone and plugging it into a USB 3.0 card reader each time. So The 48MB/s Ultras and Evos are good enough.

Got good reviews and has the bandwidth for 4K. The Note 4 will be my first 4K device so I wanted to make sure I had a good card to go with it. Dont need 128 GB (yet) personally as I stream pandora for my music. I am sure the sandisk cards would have been just fine as well.

I have the 128GB microSD card and it's great! Super fast, and stupid high capacity. But with picture and video file sizes getting bigger and bigger, and phones doing more and more, I believe that the space will come in handy. I've currently got LOTS of HD movies on it in the Note 3... but if I need the space on the Note 4 I can easily delete them.

Really makes no difference since the phone does not support the UHS-I speeds. The SanDisk Ultra would be as good as a more expensive ones.

sanddisk and Samsung are both highly rated as very good quality. You can't go wrong with either. I suggest which ever one on sale or cheaper that's the way to go.

Decided to go with it since Lexar (micron/crucial) makes the best chips and the warranty is better than the one provided by Samsung and SanDisk. But most importantly, it's faster than the current SanDisk.

I wish there was an option to up the voltage to the SD card readers in Samsung phones. I get that they lower the power for battery life and heat, buy I also want to get decent transfer speeds with my phone. No real point in getting an SD card above 48MB/s for phone use only as the required voltage for UHS-1 is not available. I do believe that all Snapdragons since the 600 support UHS-1 though. Too bad.

128gb max is the microsdxc alone (but that's only because there aren't any 256GB microsdxc cards on the market)

Running SanDisk ultra sdxc 128GB in my GN3 and mt Go Pro Hero3 black .
Like computers, our devices tested/rated for what memory is currently available when the device is released.
For example GN3 is rated for 64GB sdxc, but 128GB works fine.

The variants of "sd" are based on capacity. With few exceptions to some 4gb mSD cards, sdhc is 4gb-32gb , and sdxc is 64+GB for meow. Until something greater than 128GB is released, which may or may not be sdxc or variant of.

Lexar is every bit as good as Samsung if not better. they're owned by Micron/Crucial and are known in the photography and computer sphere for making the best chips out there, but I guess their stuff is marketed as more high brow so the average consumer isn't acquainted with the brand. Note that the Lexar cards have lifetime warranties for a reason.

The best microSD Cards on the market are those made by Sandisk and Samsung. Either of those brand will work perfectly with the N910C. I have a N910C with a 32GB Sandisk Ultra MicroSD Card, which I will be upgrading to a 128GB card when I find one in my local high street retailer.

I would highly recommend sticking to Samsung cards in a Samsung device. I know there is a lot of debate about this, but from my personal experience, I have had no less than 4 Sandisk 64Gb cards fail in various Samsung devices (phones and tablets), but I have never had a Samsung card fail. Currently I am using a Samsung 64Gb PRO, but the EVO should be fine too. Hoping to get a 128Gb PRO once the prices come down a little more.

Tested to Sandisk 200gb SD card on my Note 4 910A.

I've been using this one pretty heavily in my N910C ever since I own it. Never have a problem whatsoever. Ultra reliable. Samsung storage yields the highest MTBFs in the field. Probably removed planned obsolence from the equation entirely, since they know that when 4 billion humans will want to buy their storage that will be more than enough to break-even and keep in business..

Buy samsung ones. I had a 32GB Sandisk Extreme, and it died within 1 month in Note 4.

I have sandisk ultra 64gb before, it's work perfectly on my s4.. but after a few month (almost full) it's became slow n sometimes stuck when transferring file from internal to external card, now I'm using galaxy note 4 SM-N910H and I'm using Samsung EVO+ 128GB, write speed always stable on 20mbps.. expect if I copying a lot of small file (like game data) it will be slow, but until now I have no problem with my card, so if u have samsung device why didn't you use the same brand with your device?
for me.. take the 128GB EVO+
(I wanna have the 256GB EVO+ but the price too high for now, so I'm choosing the 128gb for now)

I love sandisk. have never had a problem with them. I bought a 128 gb from bb for 30 bucks. not bad . hopefully you find something as good

I have a "SanDisk 128GB microSDXC Memory Card Ultra Class 10"(80mbps read), it works great but I feel like it is tougher on the battery life every since I have my samsung 64gb replaced.

I've installed a Samsung 128GB Evo+ (faster than Evo, slower than Pro) in my N910V. When on Marshmallow, I looked at integrating it as a part of built-in memory, and the OS (CM13) complained that it was a bit too slow for that. I decided not to integrate. not so much for speed as I wanted to be able to switch ROMs and wasn't sure how that'd be with an integrated SD card. It's been fine (using it to store music, audiobooks, videos, ebooks, CoPilot maps, TiBackup backups and Nandroid backups)

I haven't had an android phone with an SD card since the OG Moto G days and I have heard every now and then that the way they're handled has changed?
Will the Galaxy Note 20 still keep the SD card and the internal storage separate and use the SD card for media, or does it combine the two in to a larger storage area?

It is separate. Like having an extra HardDrive on your computer. You can store media files on either or both of them.

It can't merge the two since it uses different technology.
Internal storage is way faster than an SD card.
The two are separated.

"way faster" ..
the SD storage is "way fast" enough for many things you plan to do with the phone. get a fast high speed card (i picked up the 1TB sandisk) .
burst mode on the camera will be forced to internal storage (user cant change that) . i did some early tests yesterday with the phone's video camera in different formats and aspect ratios and the card handled the throughput nicely.

but for installing application, I would prefer on internal storage rather than SD card even with an A2 rated card.

Yes because the constant IO and polling the card consume the battery faster
Plus, there's no security and encrypting / decrypting make it longer.

If you want best speed performance go with the A2 rated Sandisk Extreme or Extreme Pro. They are expensive of course. For my day to day use I just settled with Samsung EVO Plus microSD. Does the job competently at budget friendly price.

I have that one in 256gb it's okay but nowhere near as fast as my lexar 1800x but its only avail in 128gb and is 2x the price of the sandisk for half the storage...worth it? Probably not.

I just bought Kingston 'Canvas Go! Plus' 256GB card, also rated as A2 and I have found a few benchmarks showing it is a bit faster than the Sandisk Extreme Pro at a cheaper price . I have my doubt too but gonna try it when the card arrived. The Kingston card has a lifetime warranty, will see how it performs. I am very curious too. I literally just ordered the Sandisk 256GB 15 minutes ago on Amazon for $48. The Kingston is $49. The Sandisk is rated 160MB Read and 90MB write. The Kingston is 170MB read and 90MB write. I checked out that review you posted and seems like a great card. I'm thinking about cancelling my order and getting the Kingston card instead.

In my country the price differ quite a lot so I get the Kingston. Definitely gonna try it esp. on random read and write. You mean UHS-I and UHS-II right? Agree with your point, Note 20 Ultra does not have UHS-II capability, so focusing on random read and write is more logical.

Yes, UHS I vs UHS II. I'm no expert on SDcards. I did do my research though and found out that the super high-end Micro SD's will not reach their full potential on the Note 20 Ultra. I was trying to find out which one to buy to give me the fastest performance.
I just went to amazon and cancelled my order for the Sandisk and was going to order the Kingston. But I got to checkout and the Kingston wouldn't get here until September 24th! So I ordered the Sandisk again since it will be here on the 2nd
I'd still like to know how that Kingston performs for you. I'm going to run some benchmarks on my Sandisk as well. We could make a thread about it to help other XDA users decide which to get.

Yup, we can compare the performance between these 2 cards. Besides speed, another thing to take into consideration is reliability. My previous S7 Edge is running Samsung Evo card and works reliably for almost 5 years now, although it is slow. This Kingston 'Plus' card is newer version of Canvas! Go, so not sure about the reliability. Sandisk Extreme Pro maybe a more reliable card.
For benchmark, not sure which app to test on phone instead on PC. I have 'Anvil’s Storage Utilities' result for the Sandisk card (128GB) tested by myself and comparing the benchmark results with that review link, Kingston actually surpass Sandisk by a bit. Probably can't feel it in real world use XD.
Btw, I have the Exynos version of Note 20 Ultra. Sadly my courier is taking way too long to deliver my card, bought my Kingston on 17th Aug actually

I'll have to do some research to find out the best way to test on the phone. I have the SD version but I doubt the SOC matters in a drive speed test.

I have received my Kingston card and tested it. Using my office PC (WD Blue 1TB SSD) and same card reader (Ugreen brand) for both cards.

From the benchmark, Kingston win over Sandisk on almost all criteria but keep in mind that I only tested on 128GB Sandisk card.
Doing a file transfer (Windows 10 ISO file) the speed for Kingston is around 80MB/s while the Sandisk is 75MB/s. I am happy with my purchase Now on my Note 20 Ultra, I have encrypted it but not sure whether it will have an impact on the performance, my guess is it will.

I have edited my reply just now, add in Crystaldiskmark results. I guess there is no significant difference between these 2 cards. Both of them are better than Samsung's Evo XD. Probably best cards for our Note 20 for now.
