Hi everyone,
I am having an issue with my S3 receiving short videos via SMS/MMS. When I try to open the video via my messaging app (tried with both Go SMS Pro and stock), it just displays a still photo, but the audio plays. Also, the photo is very small and on the top of the screen. I'm aware of the stock messaging app giving people fits with a photo acting as a short, couple second video, but not in my case. It is the other way around, but the sound of the video plays, with a still shot photo.
I am on Clean Rom 5.5.1 with the latest version of LeanKernel.
Installed CleanRom 5.6 and the problem is gone. However, I doubt it was a problem with 5.5.1. Probably something I tinkered with and broke. All is well now.
For some God forsaken reason, the camera in my N5 is a pile of crap. Let me list the issues:
(Note I'm using the stock Google Camera app and have tried CM Focal with identical results).
Switching from Rear to Front camera takes a stupid amount of time, usually winds up crashing the Camera app altogether.
Switching from Camera to Video results in a grey bar, 1/10th the width of the screen, spanning the entire length of the right side of the screen. The app usually crashes after this.
Videos usually can't record, the screen freezes, forcing me to hit the back or home button.
When videos do record, they're corrupt and cant be played on any windows machine or in any program.
Sound quality is laughable. (wasn't when I first bought the phone with 4.4.2 on it)
Snapchat usually can't even launch the camera and asks to restart the app. Usually results in me having to reboot the phone.
When the camera does work in Snapchat, pictures come out fine, but switching cameras usually reproduces the issue mentioned above. Videos, however record only 50% of the time. The times they dont, the screen freezes, resulting me having to restart the app.
When videos do actually record in Snapchat they have about a 50/50 of being unable to be played back, resulting in the error message: "Can't play this video".
On rare occasions, using the camera in Snapchat results in the screen flickering rapidly for a few seconds and then the phone reboots... The last time this occured it wiped all the data to Facebook, Snapchat, and EvolveSMS.
These symptoms exist in both Vanilla KitKat 4.4.4 and CM11 (Snapshot M8). Yes, I have reinstalled Snapchat. I've also tried toggling on/off HDR+ to no avail.
My Camera is basically useless and it's extremely annoying. It has even caused crashes that have wiped data from my phone. Hardware related? Software related? I'm really at a loss here... Any help is appreciated.
Well first try a complete fresh install to see if it's just software related

Factory reset, wiped case and dalvik, freshly installed CM11 last night before bed. Same symptoms exist as they did before.
Hi all.
Just got my Z3, and overall the phone is excellent. I owned a Z, Z1 and Z2, M8 and HTC butterfly 2 immediately before the Z3.
Issue 1 - My top speaker SEEMS to be a bit louder than the bottom? Does anyone else have this? Perhaps its by design, and its barely perceptible. Just wondering if I were the only one.
Issue 2 - I have google now's "OK google" recognition on every screen - this seems to create a bug for the camera - every time i go into the camera, it seems to think the microphone is being used and hence there is an error message. I can dismiss it and continue to take a photo or video with no ill effect, but the error message is annoying. Any fixes for this? - this was fine on my M8 and B2 previously
Issue 3 - Youtube app is up to date, but it wont give option for 1080p resolution? 720p is max - (M8 and B2 show 1080 fine for those videos)
thanks!
Only commenting about nr3, 1080p is working fine here... Planet earth video (just looked for 1080p in youtube).
Haven't noticed nr 1 btw, so at least not disturbing me so far...

You are not. Top speaker sounds different, has more bass, even causes the phone to vibrate. Lower speaker sounds far thinner, doesn't cause any vibration.

I didn't find any option for activating "OK Google" outside the Google now screen. So how did you do that ?

No problems encountered, used the "Big Buck Bunny" and "Planet earth seen from space" videos for testing. - Resolutions 360 up to 1080p selectable and working.
Simply search for "1080p full hd".
No 1080 here neither...
Exactly the same boat. Videos only go up to 720p and no option for 1080p.
Any ideas?
I had 1080p when I first set the phone up. Now only 720p. Probably on Google's end there.
However for the speaker issue, both speakers are actually even volume wise.
Your perceived differences comes from the fact that the top speaker seems to be tuned towards the lower end, and the bottom speaker towards the highs. To me that seems intentional, as splitting them up would reduce the strain on the speakers and allow them to go louder. But ofcourse, it could all be a hardware fault
But as you say, its barely perceivable unless you actually listen for it.
For the error message all you can do is disable google now until Sony patches in a fix.
Strange about Issue #3,
I read something on reddit a few days ago about the 1080p option being gone for some..
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/2ic1zp/google_took_away_1080p_option_on_the_youtube_app/
Thanks for all the responses.
Yes, I've noticed my top speaker seems to have more bass and the lower one is more treble based. Strange how they have set it up this way, would have expected both to be even. oh well.
On the google now thing, ok - i'll just have to wait for an update, but if anyone has a reasonably workaround, let me know!
finally, on 1080 - yeah, its strange, I got 1080 on that Earth film, but on most of the regular channels I view, it seems to top out at 720p. Interesting but hope they bring 1080 back.
Thanks for all the responses. After having a Butterfly 2 (which was awesome), and only having a couple of users on the forum, its good to be back on a forum with active participants!

Chef, you need to have US english selected as the system language.
Hi all
With regards to number 2:
Issue 2 - I have google now's "OK google" recognition on every screen - this seems to create a bug for the camera - every time i go into the camera, it seems to think the microphone is being used and hence there is an error message
I have since downloaded the google now launcher, this brings the persistent google search bar onto each screen, enables OK google from each screen, plus is not giving me an error with camera.
Try it and let me know if you get the same results.
Issue #2 is a well known issue with the z3 and Google now, it should be fixed in the next big update by Sony.
Issue #3 made me realized that I haven't even opened YouTube since I got my D6633 on Monday, so when I checked the it was the same issue than most of you are saying. But I'm used to this issue on my 3 months old Galaxy Tab S, it has never worked as expected showing the maximum 1440p resolution until you clear YouTube cache and data, force close it, disable it Uninstalling updates, once this is done then you go to Play Store and look for YouTube, it should shows Enable, and one you enable it, and update to latest version, then you have your full resolution options including 1440p. Sad thing is that everytime there is a new YouTube update we need to do the same again.
I did the same steps on my Z3 just to see that it didn't work, so I went back to apps and saw that there are 2 more apps directly related to YouTube, I already have disabled Live On YouTube as I tried to use it and never weekend and then I realized that I'll never use it again. Anyway, I decided to do the same steps mentioned above but this time I also disabled the 2 YouTube extensions that are there, went back to the Play Store and Enabled and updated YouTube and when I went back to the app there are all the options including 1080p, one thing though, it seems to not stay skeeter by default, just select it and then re-start the video and you will see it on 1080p.
I re-enabled the 2 YouTube Extensions back just to see if it breaks it again but it seems that it still working so that's good news.
I hope you can fix it with this information, at least until the next YouTube update.

Heya everyone!
I am having an issue with my S6 that involves video playback.
The 2 scenario's I am experiencing this issue in are:
- youtube app: it will play audio, but video gives a black screen
- whatsapp: will open a video, but it doesn't play (as if it was just a picture). also doesn't open gif files at all.
yet youtube works fine in the browser, and i can watch my whatsapp gifs and video's from the gallery as normal too. (but it is still a BIG problem!!!!)
Sometimes when I restart my phone, it will start working. and other times it will just randomly start working again too.
But after a while, it will just break again and goes back to the problems described above.
I am experiencing this on different versions of the Stock Nougat firmware, even after full data wipes (including wiping the internal storage).
So I am totally clueless, but I find it hard to believe this is a hardware issue, since it does work sometimes, and then it doesn't work other times.
Any help, advice or insight in this issue is appreciated
Upgraded to S7 from S5 - everything is great, except I experience one very annoying issue: many YouTube videos I download for offline viewing (have YouTube Red) start freezing after a few minutes of watching. Sometimes they freeze right away. If I clear the YouTube cache and restart the app it works for a bit and then starts freezing again (the light circle in the middle is rotating and the video keeps frozen).
No freezing happens when I watch YouTube videos over the internet. Some offline videos work fine. But some consistently do not. Never had this issue with Galaxy S5.
Here is what I tried to fix this issue:
- Wiped cache partition
- Reinstalled YouTube (disabled, updated to new version) and restarted the phone
- Enabled Developer Options and Selected Force GRU rendering - this helped a bit, but did not resolve the issue
- Turned off hardware overlays in Developer Options.
- Turned on 4x MSAA in Developer Options.
- Cleared cache in Google Play app
- Switched download storage from SD to phone to eliminate any SD issue
Any ideas?
Hello,
my only idea is that there is not much to try when app crashes, all you can really do is check in the application settings (in the system settings of the phone and then "applications") if it has all the necessary permissions, clear cache as you did but I don't think it has anything to do with developer options like forcing GPU rendering.
So, all I can think of is:
- Write to Google to explain them the bug you encounter, they might have a solution or may release a fix in a future version of the app. As you use Youtube Red, you pay for a service, in the PlayStore you have been able to install the app so it means it's not incompatible with your S7, so you have the right to ask Google for a solution or a refund.
- Try to go on apkmirror and to get an older version of the app, maybe that bug wasn't there in earlier versions.
- Try to download offline videos with LTE, or with Wifi, to see if that change anything. Maybe your LTE connection or Wifi connection isn't stable and cause downloaded files to be corrupted.
Sorry, that's all I can help you with...
EDIT: I don't know how Youtube Red works about downloading videos, but can you choose the quality? Like 360p ou 1080p for example? If yes, then maybe try different quality settings to see if that has any influence on your bug.
In the end, I would probably it is a problem of corrupted files, or a codec problem maybe. I guess you can only read those videos with the Youtube app? If ever the videos are downloaded really like video files in your phone's memory, then maybe you could try an alternate video player to read them (but my guess is that they can only be read from the youtube app).
