Hi guys, I need some help here. I'm a noob to rooting Android phones and I'm reading as much as I can to learn as much as I can but I have hit a little hitch.
I recently got the new HTC Inspire 4G from ATT and I'm trying to use super one click. I installed the Android sdk and every possible add-on for the sdk.
The problem is every time I try to use super one click it hangs as soon as it tries to do psneuter and the same thing happens if I use rageagainstthecage at the same point.
I have no idea why this keeps happening as I think I'm doing everything correctly.
Please help me figure out how to did this issue so I can use this program and root my phone and allow installation of non market apps.

No offense but if you spent 2 seconds reading a little bit you would realize that there is no one click root for the inspire YET. However there is an alternative method to root that involves making a gold card. All of this info can be found in android development.
super one click doesn't support the inspire right now. to root and enable sideloading, start here.

from what I heard and read, There will never be an easy root for the Inspire. I followed the directions using ace hack kit with successful results. I'm Rooted and already flashed Leedroid ROM.
Go to the IRC channel if you have problems. But first thing is making a Goldcard. That's a must

Ok, so i had read and attempted that method also. I have attached a screen capture of what happens when i follow that guide................ nothing!
I open a prompt directly in the folder with adb in it and i run the command, obviously without the unnecessary path, and it starts the process and never returns the magic number that i need.
Any ideas what to do next?

First time in the command window type "adb devices" and wait for it to return line describing your device. Then you can proceed with the adb shell commands.
So i tried the "adb services and it just gave me a long list saying the same thing on every line and that it was offline. Then i ran the original command and i got a different error.
Again i attached a screen grab of what happened. Thanks for all this help guys.
I did exactly the same thing as the guy in that video did. Literally step by step. I just don't get that number when i try it.

Well HTC is a little different. Some HTC users feel they are elitist who feel that if you have no idea about basic adb commands then you shouldn't be accessing root. This is just my opinion from back when I had a magic and dream. I'm not talking about anyone directly, but that vibe can be felt sometimes in the HTC forum.

Did you turn on USB Debugging in Settings > Applications > Development?
Install HTC sync. It will install the correct driver to get adb to work
If you are only wanting to enable non market app install, superoneclick will do the job perfectly.
1-Install HTC sync to get appropriate USB drivers installed.
2-Connect phone to PC with USB cable and set it to charge only when asked by the phone which choice you want to make.
3-Put phone in debugging mode.
4-Run superoneclick as administrator.
5-Run the root for universal.
6-When that finishes click on the button to enable non market apps and let it do its thing.
7-Once all of this is complete you can disconnect your USB cable.
8-Now shut your phone all the way off then restart.
You should now be able to click on any APK file in estrongs file explorer and install it with no problems. This does not root your phone but does enable the ability to install non market apps. Also, shutting the phone all the way down and restarting may not be necessary but that is the way that I did it and it worked flawlessly.
There still will not be a setting in app management to enable non market apps but they will install after following this procedure.
Now, go and have some fun with all those apps you have stashed but couldn't install beforehand.

OK...I've read the Wiki and the Glossary, I've searched the forums, I've been obsessively reading this forum for a week, and I still have some very basic questions that I'm hoping someone can either point me to a link or just drop some info for me. I know many of you have been at this since the Dawn of Android, but sometimes I feel like I'm walking into my first day of med-school when everyone else has been here for 5 years. Assume for a moment that I am a tabula rasa where the rest of you are now writing in the margins of a dense technical manual. Because that's what it feels like for me.
First, some background info: I want to learn how to do all this stuff, but this phone was expensive! I don't want to break it. So I'm cautious. I'm not a programmer but I'm not technically inept. I am good at following directions. I don't panic when things go wrong. So I think I can root, flash, and all the fun stuff that comes with having an Android device. But I have some questions that are still unanswered. I'll try to be as concise as possible (too late, I know):
1) I have the SPH-D720 model. I see rooting guides for the I9020 but not the SPH-D720. Will those other guides work for my device? I've seen other people ask this same question get sent to BuglessPete's guide so I'm assuming so, but I want to be sure.
2) I know that GRJ90 and 2.3.5 just came out. My phone is updated to both. It looks like most of the root guides are still referring to 2.3.4 or 2.3.3. Should I wait until someone releases an updated 2.3.5 guide, or is the method still the same?
3) Backups...these are different than saved settings, yes? So when I root my phone (which apparently requires unlocking the bootloader now) I'm going to lose all of my apps/themes/settings, right?
4) Do any of the developers offer tech support?
I now throw myself to the mercy of the masses, prepared for flames, but hoping for help.

It's the same.
- fastboot oem unlock
- flash a custom recovery for your device (crespo4g) using fastboot
- boot into CWM, mount system and flash the su binary

No change unless you are trying to flash a modified boot.img for adb remount (this is not necessary if you merely want root access)

Yes, fastboot oem unlock wipes everything, including the SD card.
Thanks. So a follow up question then:
Is it possible to back up all of my settings and whatnot, and then quickly put them back after rooting the phone? No biggie if not, and since all of my contact info is on Google that sync happens automatically.
Another question - when I'm installing the sdk, do I need all the other stuff that it automatically selects or can I dump all that and just download the USB driver package?

Awesome. I'm taking the leap now! So far, nothing screwed up...
So...I can't get the correct driver installed. In all the guides it says I should have the Bootloader Interface listed as the driver. But that is not one of my options - Allgamer's guide says there should be 3 choices, but I only have 2:
Android ADB Interface
and
Android Composite ADB Interface
How do I choose the Bootloader Interface?
You need to be in the bootloader on the phone I believe. I am new to the nexus s so I am not 100 percent sure.
Didn't work from the bootloader either - still showing Android ADB Interface.
I guess I'll uninstall everything and start from scratch.
ok so i know one of the most important things everyone needs for a device is root and s-off. without that no roms or kernels or any of the good stuff. so, i usually use the cyanogenmod guide. but with all the commands you have to use it can be a little intimidating for some people new to rooting. so to help with this, i have taken the guide for root from the cyanogenmod wiki and rolled it up into a nice little batch file you can use to root your inspire. i have not been able to test this since my inspire is already rooted so as always use at your own risk. all it is is all the commands put together so it can be easier for newer members. so here is how to get this to work. also credit goes to the people over at cyanogenmod who have made the guide.
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THIS CAUSES DAMAGE TO YOUR DEVICE.
1. You must have adb installed and running. you also need to have it in C:/android-sdk-windows or you can edit the first line with notepad or move the folder.
2. You must have already downgraded your phone to the 1.32.405.6 firmware.
3. Your device must be connected to your computer and have usb debugging enabled.
4. open the zip provided and in the folder are all of the files nessicary for this to work. unzip them into the platform tools directory so they can be easily accessed.
5. extract the Root file to your desktop.
6. Run the file
7. look in the window and find the 3 md5 sums.
a)if the 2nd and 3rd md5's match you have achieved root/s-off
b) if the 1st and 3rd match you have not downgraded sucesfully or the firmware is to high
c) if none match don't reboot and go to #G2ROOT for help.
also, if this does not work for you please tell me and will try to fix it.

i would have to say that until this is tested by the dev that anyone looking to root and s-off their device should use the ace hack kit. it is a one step process anyone can do.
@ stumpy
you can revert your device to stock using the factory s-on tool here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1208507
so please test this so it can help people root and please keep up the good work.

i dont get why it would need testing. it uses a method that already works and i have used,i just made it kind of a 1-click thing so it would be easier. if you look at the guide i linked and look at the file its the same exact commands.
Good work dude!!
Seriously? This is not an easy root method. Ace Hack Kit has already spent the last 7 months perfecting this method and it is sound. All you need to do with Ace hack kit is:
1. Purchase Phone
2. Enable USB debugging
3. Download Ace Hack Kit
4. Plug phone into computer and run Option 1. Done
No downgrade. So its complete stock with root and it creates your gold card in the process so it doesn't get easier than that. Also unroot is part of the program and it let's you choose which RUU that was released for Inspire to unroot back to. Also you can flash any of the stock radios all in one program.
Are you aware that Attn1 has already built a program that is now "THE" Inspire 4G root/unroot program?
Agreed, there are many ways to root a device. The Hack Kit is the standard and most simple way to root/unlock your device. I am sure some one may find this handy but we really don't need another thread on how to do this and its really not development related. Also a bit of advice always test something to make sure it works before posting it.

There is literally no information in this posting that someone can use to help you.
Blackknightavalon's direction to the SDK webpage is about as helpful of a reply as you can expect to solicit with the information you have provided.
This is like going to a car forum, and saying " I have a blue camaro. It won't start. I tried turning the key. Help please"
What commands are you trying to run through adb?
What errors are you getting, if any?
What do you see when you type "adb devices"
What operating system are you running on the computer you are trying to connect from?
Have you turned on "usb debugging" in the options menu on the phone?
There are a whole lot of things that can be your problem, and we'd love to help, but we can't help you if you don't tell us what's wrong.
Doubtless someone else will get back to you before I get a chance to, since my time is very limited these days online, but posting some more information about your problem will elicit a response that may actually help you.
Best of luck!

Make sure you have current adb drivers for your phone. It will show android composite in device manager. Fastboot will show fastboot device. Seeing a yellow question mark is bad.
Make sure your pathing is set up right.
Typing "adb devices" and if you see your device. If so you're ready to roll.
I usually get fastboot errors like this when I don't have drivers installed right.

I get Error Message with ADB
Hey guys, so I perm rooted with S-OFF my mytouch 4g slide, with theunlockr.com youtube video and guide using revolutionary. then I attempted to install a ROM with ROM MANAGER, and it got stuck on the splash/loading screen. After some searching I found out that this meant that I could have potentially BRICKED the phone, so I followed theunlockr.com's guide to UNROOTING the phone, and it worked, I flashed the original stock tmobile rom, and it loaded fine, I tried to start the whole process again, but now I get stuck in the very beginning, trying to get TEMP root, I start the fr3vo exploit like the guide stated, but then i keep getting error messages on the command line prompt saying that there is an error with ADB, then when I power the phone with volume down and power, the revolutionary is no longer on the top of the screen, but it still says SHIP S-OFF. Does that have to do anything with my problem? is there a way to GET S back to ON, so I can start the process over? or am I better off having S off??? I installed ROM MANAGER and tried to flash a recover image thinking that having S off would allow me to do this, but I get error messages saying there are problems with the permissions. the web site for the guide I used to root is this one incase anyone wants more details into what I did, any help would be greatly appreciated. theunlockr.com/2011/09/09/how-to-permanently-root-and-gain-s-off-on-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-slide-revolutionary-method
Use perm root method. Myself I flashed oneclick in recovery, but you can follow the guide the perm root part.
Btw rom manager supports flashing of the new cwm only. I checked the roms in rom manager they aren't supported. You have to go to the cm7 thread here and download and flash cm7 from recovery.
Just redo root process and install cwm from rom manager. Then go to the dev section and flash your favorite rom in recovery. My sig has directions on how to do everything.
Also if you're having permissions error use root explorer on the rom manager apk make sure it has execute checked. Also I think rom manager has a fix permissions button. Its never worked for me.
S off will allow flashing of cwm. However you need to be rooted to flash cwm threw rom manager. My sig has a guide on installing cwm without being rooted.

Thanks for the QUICK reply, but I looked at the guide, and it stated I have to have recovery installed, BEFORE I do the perm root method, but I dont have recovery, when I do HBOOT, and I try to boot into recovery, I get a red exclamation mark on the screen and I have to end up taking out the battery. Thats why I was wondering if having S OFF from the beginning now is what is messing me up when I am trying to ROOT again, I mean, I am doing the same steps.... just now I get errors when I try to do the TEMP root step... so I cant continue... and I cant get ROM MANAGER to flash a recovery image... is there a guide or steps someplace that can guide me to root the MT4G slide already having S off?
I found the problem myself, I had to enable USB Debugging.
I had USB debugging enabled.... hmmmm you made me doubt myself... I guess I will try it again, since I flashed stock rom again all settings were reverted... so I cannot VERIFY I had USB debugging on, but I was sure I did... I will try again and post... I am reflashing the stock rom like 5 times a days trying to root again =(
wait... cwest31, you had which same problem? because I was writing about 2 problems: about booting into recovery with S off, but no recovery image (hence I got red exclamation mark), and trying to get ROM MANAGER to flash a recovery image on my phone since I have S off already, but I get error messages (problem with permissions)

What he said.
Also ROM MANAGER WILL NOT WORK UNLESS ROOTED. Get rooted then try flashing the image. The compendium also has step by step guides using terminal emulator once rooted

Also I want you op and the other one to be clear on what s off is and root.
Getting S OFF allows unsigned zips to be flashed. This means you can now flash roms and root. Without s off you cannot root, rom, kernels. S OFF is not root.
Root is gaining admin rights over your phone. this allows programs that require access to the root files to have access to them. ROM Manager, titanium backup, drocap, setcpu will be granted access to the root files and programs which unrooted phones would not be granted access .
This can be a reason why you two are having trouble using rom manager unrooted. Rom manager cannot access the files it needs

Hey guys I have been searching all over the place for this answer and I just cant seem to find anything on the topic.
This is my first time tinkering with my HTC One X (old version 4.0.3) and downloaded the most updated drivers which is where I believe I went wrong.
I have the 4.2.0.001 drivers and when I open the root.zip file nothing happens I get no errors I just get the "your HTC One X is rooted..." yet my phone simply doesn't reboot.
So I attempted to install the downgraded drivers the 3.0.0.007 which looking back has been the recommended drivers, however; when I extract those files and head into my device manager it does not pull up the androidusb.inf file to upload the 3.0.0.007 drivers.
Am I missing a proper BMP USB Driver and where can I find it? Or is there a root file that will work with the 4.2.0.001 drivers?
If there is any link to this topic please post it, I am very new to rooting or if I have made any mistakes please let me know.

The root methods simply give you temp root and super cid so you can unlock the bootloader. *facepalm*
Then when your bootloader is unlocked you can flash recovery and then flash su through recovery or install a custom rom which will already be rooted.

I guess I am not understanding the core concept here, so I now I theoretically have a temp root with Super CID. I was under the impression that I was supposed to download Titanium Backup before attempting to unlock the bootloader. So I went to download and it told me I did not have root access so I could not run Titanium. I am afraid to attempt a bootloader unlock with out my rom being backed up. Can you please shed some light on this or post a link that would explain the process after temp root in detail thank you

You can backup after your bootloader is unlocked.. bootloader unlock is just a flag that allows you to flash certain partitions like recovery.
Backing up before or after will make no difference. If you end up really messing up your device, a backup won't save you anyway so I don't see why you'd be worried. If you S-OFF, you can RUU to get back to stock any time no problem, unless you full on brick. Then only jtagg will save you.
Typically before I root a phone, I read all the stickies in all the subsections to understand how things work since every phone has differences, some subtle some not so subtle.
