[Q] Rooting for Newbies

I am getting my new Thunderbolt tonight. After some research, I have decided for some specific reasons I would like to root this phone. I have never rooted a phone before and would like some direction.
The first step as I understand it is to back up the original operating system. How is that done? After that what's next? What I need is the wifi hotspot feature unlocked. Is there a specific root to accomplish this? What's been proven the best so far?
If someone wants to email me personally on this, feel free. I need to do this, but can't afford to brick a brand new phone.

Rooting is just a way to gain complete control of your phone. There aren't different types and the best way to do it is in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616.
Just follow those steps and you should be fine. You don't need to back up your entire operating system to root but you might want to back up your applications so you can easily reinstall them. After you follow the steps in that thread and are rooted just search for wireless tether in the market and it lets you tether for free.

I can second that. I literally just completed rooting my Thunderbolt that I received today. I followed the 10 step program from the thread (my wife thinks I need a 12 step program with my phone addiction ). It ran without a hitch just type (or cut and paste) exactly as written. I wanted to thank the OP in the development thread, but I need 10 posts so this is another one!

I believe what you've heard about backing up the original operating system is what you do right after you've rooted before you begin flashing custom roms and kernels which is the main reason you root in the first place. There is plenty of info but here's a little list.
1. Follow the rooting thread that You posted above me (Who's on first? What's on second?)
2. Install Rom Manager (RM).
3. Launch Rom manager and install clockwork recovery(first option on RM)
4. Second option on RM is boot into recovery.
5. Once in recovery go into Backup /Restor
6. Choose Backup - This is called a Nandroid Backup and is a snapshot of your phone in it's current state. It saves the backup onto the phone under /clockworkmod/backup place a copy of the backup on your computer for safe keeping and leave the copy on your phone in case of worries.
That should get you started.

Those are the steps I took to root.

I just rooted my thunderbolt last night using the easyroot method and didn't run into any major issues. Had to rerun a couple steps, but nothing more than that.
I'm now running BAMF-Remix 1.5 with the radio upate and status bar clock removed.
I literally had zero experience in regards to this and am still confused by some of the terminology, so if I can do it, I have no doubt you should be able to accomplish rooting your phone!

I would suggest using the procedure that jcase posted. It is simple, easy, and you will gain some valuable knowledge of adb which could be useful to you in the future. The process is simple, just copy and paste the commands. The adb knowledge will definitely help you down the road, even though it is minor. Also any problems can be traced to a step. With a one click process it is tough to determine where an issue went wrong.

Easier said than done coming from someone who has been around for a while. I couldn't even figure out how to get adb installed... I installed the Android SDK and had to install the Java SDK but I was still clueless how to actually get adb going... I downloaded the ADB+Drivers for 64bit which had the adb.exe but obviously this can't be ran standalone. So being a complete ignorant fool, is the reason I ended up opting for the easyroot method. That being said, I did intially try for the manual method lol.

I knew nothing about rooting and followed the steps after not being able to do the quick root. AND learned a lot about adb. Good Luck

Your no fool. Alot of the adb setup videos and tutorials are old. It change the execute file from the "tools" directory to "platform-tools" directory. That did stump me since i had to reset up adb on a new computer. I have not been around that long, just did alot of reading, and came from the incredible forum where i turned into a flash junkie with alot of help.

after you are done rooting deffinately flash clockworkmod recovery and flash a custom rom. I trouble getting root to stay without a custom rom.

In rom manager it gives me an option to flash cwm. What does it do when I flash clockwork recovery?

Rooting my TB was a pain but it was well worth it. Hopefully there is a faster, easier method now.
Battery life on my rooted TB with leankernel is comparable to what my battery was on my Droid x, if not better

I was following instructions on how to use the Revolutionary Method to root my phone. ALL that I did was download Revolutionary, The HTC Fastboot Drivers and I obtained my beta key from the website. I hooked up my phone on charge only with USB Debugging enabled. The program ran fine and it said successful. The next step was to power down and then do an HBOOT. HOWEVER when I hit selected power down, my phone shut off AND IT WONT TURN BACK ON! Help!
What do I do? Please help me... Did I just BRICK my phone that friggin easily?!?!?! =(... I could cry....

Pull battery and wait for about 10 seconds then reinsert. Then, while holding the volume down button, press and hold the power button for about a second. Sometimes it takes me a few tries so you might just need to try again. Also, the revolution recovery is pretty crappy and you should update it to the modaco 4.0.0.9 recovery asap. Good luck!

Yeah it's always a good idea to make sure you read everything thoroughly, write down the steps, and give it a practice run in your head so you're sure you've got everything figured out. Back when I had my mytouch 4G I read for like 3 weeks before I attempted anything on my phone so that when I did I felt comfortable with what I'd be doing. To add to unclespoon's great advice here, one thing to note that might help:
If the power cord is plugged in to the phone, and it's powered off, you'll see the orange light in the top right corner of the screen to denote charging.
If you press the power button, the light goes out, but after a minute comes back on. The phone remains powered off.
If you press the power button, the light goes out, and then you press the power button again before the light comes back on, the phone will power up.
This only applies to having the phone powered off and plugged in, doesn't matter if it's powered off and not plugged in.
This is on CWM 4.0.0.9, can't remember if it's that way for 4.0.0.8 or not - but you should upgrade to 4.0.0.9 as soon as you can if you haven't already.

I am having a great deal of trouble upgrading to Modaco 4.0.0.9... I really dont know what I am doing wrong either. Is there a STEP by STEP guide a child could follow. Apparently I suck at this.... I've havebeen reading all day after messing up and I've downloaded so many different programs and drivers and all kinds of other misc things I cant count anymore.... In HBOOT it says S-Off and SUperOneClick says it's already been rooted and I can download Root Apps. For all intensive purposes, it's been rooted BUT Root Check (the app) says it isnt rooted properly and I cant gain admin rights using the Terminal Emulator or ADB from my computer. I can push files and reboot but I can not use "su" to "shell" works but not "su"... I could pull my hair out! What am I doing wrong?

Okay when you type "su" in terminal. What is it saying?
And you can't open any rooted programs?
Try flashing one of the roms. Or reinstall using a different root method.
The roms are already rooted and you have modaco recovery. Check this thread out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320002

When I type in "su" it says: reloc_library[1312]: 1688 cannot locate '_ZNK7android6Parcel15SetDataPositionEj'... CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE
and I CAN open rooted programs... it's weird... I can download, install and USE rooted programs...
I just tried to flash Modaco 4.0.0.9 but I dont think I have the IMG file located properly on my SD card... Can you assist with this? It would be greatly appreciated.

QUESTION THOUGH: I used Fr3vo for a temp-root and wrote modaco to my reovery partition I guess... When I reboot will my root still be in effect or will I have to do it again? If so, whats a good reliable permanent root?

Thank You Sir. I'm proud to say I figured it out myself, through a lot of deductive thinking and reasoning, and managed to get everything squared away when it comes to ROOTING. I got bored and "flashed" the Senseless ROM to make things more exciting. Its fun when you start to figure things out. I appreciate all the help from everyone and the existing information that has been shared. It's been a great help.

I haven't done this method yet. I'm hoping a more experienced member can chime in.
I flashed my superuser from recovery using the download found here. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary. (Look under does revolutionary give me root download that zip)
Don't unzip. Put whole file into main sd card directory
Boot to recovery
Installed root package by click install zip from sd card
Reboot
I. Haven't done any temp roots. And you can try this just make a nandroid first (backup in recovery). That way if something goes wrong easy fix

I'm glad you figured it out. I work in the it field most problems are solved by figuring out the root problem which can take time.
As in many problems here. Two people can have similar problem, but very different solutions

You are right as right can be there... Similar Problems can have very different solutions hahaha... Speaking of problems:
I am trying to connect my phone to the T-Mobile HSPA. A friend told me I need to find my MSL number (code for my EPSD?) I can't find any guides to accomplishing this with a MT4GS. And when I searched EPSD on XDA it came back with source code forums. So naturally I downloaded the source code anyways hahahaha... I'm download happy.... but anyways, am I on the right track? What do I do? Are you familiar with this stuff? Thanks.

There is literally no information in this posting that someone can use to help you.
Blackknightavalon's direction to the SDK webpage is about as helpful of a reply as you can expect to solicit with the information you have provided.
This is like going to a car forum, and saying " I have a blue camaro. It won't start. I tried turning the key. Help please"
What commands are you trying to run through adb?
What errors are you getting, if any?
What do you see when you type "adb devices"
What operating system are you running on the computer you are trying to connect from?
Have you turned on "usb debugging" in the options menu on the phone?
There are a whole lot of things that can be your problem, and we'd love to help, but we can't help you if you don't tell us what's wrong.
Doubtless someone else will get back to you before I get a chance to, since my time is very limited these days online, but posting some more information about your problem will elicit a response that may actually help you.

Make sure you have current adb drivers for your phone. It will show android composite in device manager. Fastboot will show fastboot device. Seeing a yellow question mark is bad.
Make sure your pathing is set up right.
Typing "adb devices" and if you see your device. If so you're ready to roll.
I usually get fastboot errors like this when I don't have drivers installed right.

Adb is part of the adk. It's to help debug and install things via a directlink to the computer. Its found in platform tools and is considered a dev tool.

I get Error Message with ADB
Hey guys, so I perm rooted with S-OFF my mytouch 4g slide, with theunlockr.com youtube video and guide using revolutionary. then I attempted to install a ROM with ROM MANAGER, and it got stuck on the splash/loading screen. After some searching I found out that this meant that I could have potentially BRICKED the phone, so I followed theunlockr.com's guide to UNROOTING the phone, and it worked, I flashed the original stock tmobile rom, and it loaded fine, I tried to start the whole process again, but now I get stuck in the very beginning, trying to get TEMP root, I start the fr3vo exploit like the guide stated, but then i keep getting error messages on the command line prompt saying that there is an error with ADB, then when I power the phone with volume down and power, the revolutionary is no longer on the top of the screen, but it still says SHIP S-OFF. Does that have to do anything with my problem? is there a way to GET S back to ON, so I can start the process over? or am I better off having S off??? I installed ROM MANAGER and tried to flash a recover image thinking that having S off would allow me to do this, but I get error messages saying there are problems with the permissions. the web site for the guide I used to root is this one incase anyone wants more details into what I did, any help would be greatly appreciated. theunlockr.com/2011/09/09/how-to-permanently-root-and-gain-s-off-on-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-slide-revolutionary-method

Use perm root method. Myself I flashed oneclick in recovery, but you can follow the guide the perm root part.
Btw rom manager supports flashing of the new cwm only. I checked the roms in rom manager they aren't supported. You have to go to the cm7 thread here and download and flash cm7 from recovery.
Just redo root process and install cwm from rom manager. Then go to the dev section and flash your favorite rom in recovery. My sig has directions on how to do everything.
Also if you're having permissions error use root explorer on the rom manager apk make sure it has execute checked. Also I think rom manager has a fix permissions button. Its never worked for me.
S off will allow flashing of cwm. However you need to be rooted to flash cwm threw rom manager. My sig has a guide on installing cwm without being rooted.

Thanks for the QUICK reply, but I looked at the guide, and it stated I have to have recovery installed, BEFORE I do the perm root method, but I dont have recovery, when I do HBOOT, and I try to boot into recovery, I get a red exclamation mark on the screen and I have to end up taking out the battery. Thats why I was wondering if having S OFF from the beginning now is what is messing me up when I am trying to ROOT again, I mean, I am doing the same steps.... just now I get errors when I try to do the TEMP root step... so I cant continue... and I cant get ROM MANAGER to flash a recovery image... is there a guide or steps someplace that can guide me to root the MT4G slide already having S off?

I found the problem myself, I had to enable USB Debugging.

I had USB debugging enabled.... hmmmm you made me doubt myself... I guess I will try it again, since I flashed stock rom again all settings were reverted... so I cannot VERIFY I had USB debugging on, but I was sure I did... I will try again and post... I am reflashing the stock rom like 5 times a days trying to root again =(

Umm...did you read the full instructions very carefully? When you get to the part where you flash the Superuser .zip file, you need to try it several times before it'll hold.

Also ROM MANAGER WILL NOT WORK UNLESS ROOTED. Get rooted then try flashing the image. The compendium also has step by step guides using terminal emulator once rooted

Also I want you op and the other one to be clear on what s off is and root.
Getting S OFF allows unsigned zips to be flashed. This means you can now flash roms and root. Without s off you cannot root, rom, kernels. S OFF is not root.
Root is gaining admin rights over your phone. this allows programs that require access to the root files to have access to them. ROM Manager, titanium backup, drocap, setcpu will be granted access to the root files and programs which unrooted phones would not be granted access .
This can be a reason why you two are having trouble using rom manager unrooted. Rom manager cannot access the files it needs

AWESOME!!! turns out i just had to run revolutionary TWICE, and the second time it figured out it was already rooted and then asked if I wanted to install recovery, I dont know how to do it manually so I clicked yes, and THEN i was able to go into recovery and flash the PERM root ZIP, rebooted and i had SUPERUSER in my app drawer!!!! awesome, now to try to get the version of google talk installed that actually allows for video chat!!! I HATE QIK!!!!!!

I have loved android for the ability to customize, and I had the G1, MOTOCLIQ, G2, and now MT4GS, I rooted my G2, but didnt do anything to it because i was scared to F it up, but with the MT4GS I got the balls to do it just because I was SOOOO UPSET that the phone comes with a version of GTALK that does NOT ALLOW FOR VIDEO CHAT!!?!?! WTF!!! whats the front camera for then?! and QIK sucks, not all my friends are on tmobile... i was even more upset when the HTC AMAZE has a version of GTALK that does allow for video chat straight out of the box!!! this is my main push to wanting to root... thanks for letting me vent! lol and thanks for all your great info

mmmm... I tried to install a ROM before and thats what F-ed everything up =/ I am hesitant, I really want a Gtalk version that allows for video chat, does the senseless rom have video gchat capabilities??

[Q] Rooted Phone cant use Rom Manager or Super User

Okay this is my first post because I really need help from you. I watched and learned from youtube videos how to root my phone and followed all the steps because I wanted ice cream sandwhich theme on my phone. My phone has the s-Off.
I open Rom Manager and it says you must root your phone. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su". Use google to search on you computer to find instuctions to root your phone. I click okay and still try to press Flash ClockworkMod recovery
Then it will say an error occured while attempting to run privileged commands. Same thing happens for fix permissions. I have Super User on my computer when I did all of this and I still have it but Have no Idea how to get it on my phone. Please help and put it into retard form for me if you do respond I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I have an Evo 4G and I used the Revolutionary App on my computer that all I had to do was get the beta key and plug it into the app and It basically did everything. I have done this about 6 hours over three days and Still havent gotten it right.

u need to find the correct method for ur phone model and it will successfully done. Superuser for your pc not the one you should moved to your phone.

I have heard about a phone being rooted or not rooted for sometime now and I decided to look into what it meant today. I've decided that I would like to root my LG Optimus V after reading quite a few articles regarding why I should root the phone. I am hoping to get rid of the unnecessary applications that can not be moved to the SD card; it stops me from downloading apps that I'd like to have.
I saw the guide to rooting this phone and I am good at following instructions and have more than average computer experience but I don't know anything about the android system or cell phone rooting.
Under the what you need, I am embarrassed to admit that I don't know what "ADB installed and working" is! I definitely want to learn more and attempt this but am unsure what to do next. Take it on? Some of what I have read about this is almost like another language. I appreciate any and all of your assistance.

I am on my phone, so it's hard to give you links, but in the Android developers, there is a guidde for setting up ADB. The most hardest part is wait the download time and slow instalation process to make it running. You need a 60 MB file, install it (the longest thing), and some files, Wich are less than 10 MB, extract it to the right folder and you're done.

Don't do something if you're not sure that it will succeed. Rooting caused me to soft brick my Samsung Galaxy S and I barely managed to save it. There's no guarantee that it will save you if it happens. Just warning you. If you root your device however, you do get a whole new experience of Android. Weigh this out, and try it.

If its anything like the Optimus T, it can easily be rooted by just downloading z4root app and running it
Edit: if its running 2.2.1, z4root works. but if the firmware is 2.2.2 and beyond, then ADB is your method

Do your research. If you decide to do anything to your phone I repeat do your research. Google is your best friends, literally type your question when you have one and find the answer. Get a notepad read threads, watch youtube "how to's" using google put in quotes "HOW TO ROOT" "HOW TO _____" etc. Don't attempt anything till your sure and if something goes wrong don't make the mistake of thinking well I'll do this, this makes sence. You can easily brick your phone doing whAT you think "makes sence" last write the steps down on your note pad with links etc. Make instructions for yourself. If you do all this and you still aren't sure then you aren't ready

Im a noob just read around on the site a lot and take on the task when you feel comfty I've got a hang of it in about a week or so.

Easy guide to ADB setup with screenies

the best method i know of is to use super one click root a simple google search will find you the program easily. I have rooted several devices with no fails using this method
Rooted Devices:
-Zte Blade
-Vodafone 858
-samsung galaxy s2
-motorola droid x
-and more
The process only involves this
1) Switch on usb debugging rom the phones settings
2) connect the usb to the phone and pc
3) click the root button on the program wait for it to root
4) reboot the phone and you will have rooted the device
a good way to make sure that you have root access on your phone is to download root checker rom the market, this app will tell you if you have root access or not mate

For some reason, I thought I was not 2.2.2 but the phone was upstairs when I checked this message so I wasn't sure. Of course, since it is more difficult to do, I DO HAVE 2.2.2. !
I hadn't seen the new posts yet as I've been moved to this forum (Sorry I didn't get that right!) and I see that killall has provided the link to ADB I was going to ask for. I see that there are other posts, too, and I will definitely read them now.
One other question! If I get stuck somewhere, which part of the forum do I need? Not that I expect to but it's best to be prepared!

Fanboy_Hunter - Thank you for all of the good, sensible advice. I have bookmarked so many pages at this point that it is all spinning in my head. I need to go through them and compare for consistency and try to understand the why's behind the how's! Also, thank you for what should have been obvious - using YouTube videos; I just use them for music and when someone sends me something funny; I've never thought of You Tube as a "How to" source. A big thank you for that.

Kannibalism - As I mentioned above, I have been to numerous websites and can't keep them straight - yet! I do remember my phone being on a list of phones that I can use Super One Click with but underneath the list, it was suggested I try another way first. I kept looking for my phone's directions on that website but couldn't find them. Time to re-research. Any idea why they'd say it's on the list for Super One Click and then to try something else first? I'll try to find the quote on that one.
I did try to find out if my phone is rooted or not by using a program downloaded to my phone from the Android Market called Connectbot. The directions from the website were to follow the directions with the download carefully and I would end up with either a * or a #; one meaning rooted and the other not rooted. (I could be wrong about the * and # - it could have been different symbols.) There were no instructions with the download and the screen that comes up is nothing I am even slightly familiar with; it asks me to "Use the quick-connect box to connect to a host." Totally unfamiliar with that.
Can you suggest a simple program to see if my phone is rooted or not?

As for super one click saying that the phone should be rooted in another way i have no idea why maybe because a dev has fixed an app to root the phone
for example when rooting my zte blade the method that i was supposed to use was using a modified app i skipped the app and used super one click to root. I did this because i have more confidence using super one click than a modified app.
When rooting a phone there will be no extra benefits when using another method since once the phone has been rooted they have all the same benefits
