[Q] Router Setup Questions - Shield Q&A

Hi.
I bought a Western Digital N900 (N750s are not available in my country) as recommended by some people in the GeForce forum since it apparently streams well but I always get disconnected from Limelight every 20-30 minutes. Frames start dropping and I'm kicked out. A quick reconnection fixes the issue for a while. I'm like 2 meters away from the router with no walls in between as I was testing it. So I'd like to ask for suggestions on how to improve the performance. If you don't count the getting kicked out, it's smooth.
Setup:
Router A with Internet is connected to PC through Wifi (In a different room and floor)
Router B (N900) is connected to PC through Ethernet (Only Shield and PC are connected).
N900 uses same SSID for 2.4 and 5 GHz
I have tried using different SSIDs for 2.4 and 5 GHz but issue remains.
N900 Smart QOS is on.
I used Wifi Analyzer and I picked the best channel for 2.4GHz and I'm the only one in the area with a 5GHz router.
5 GHz is set to 20/40 MHz Auto (There's no 40 MHz only).
Limelight (rooted) is set to 20 720P/60fps.
Shield is using latest update and rooted.
I've tried normal Gamestream but it's choppy due to 30 FPS and there are weird audio sounds at times.
Is there anything wrong with my setup? Any tips to fix my issue?

nvidia shled game stream on mac pro in bootcamp stuttery.

Hello recently bought a 2008 mac pro and installed windows bootcamp onto it so that I can switch between windows 7 and osx mavericks whenever I want. I installed a PC GTX 680 into it which works like a dream.
I installed Geforce experience and optimized all my games.
When I go into the compatability list it says I have all the pre requisites to stream a game.
I the turn on the shield, it recognises all my games and when I choose one it loads on my PC straight away.
Unfortunatly as soon as game starts it's a stuttery mess and usually shuts down saying "cannot connect to PC"
Very odd. Went into my windows firewall settings but all nvidia game streaming stuff is ticked.
Currently here are my specs
Mac pro 2008 3.1 eight core xeon 2.8ghz cpu
KFA2 GTX 680 2gb DDR5 gpu Nvidia Driver 337.50
10GB DDR2 memory
SKY HUB router (new white one) model Wireless N
Nvidia Shield fully updated.
Not sure where problem is...
I'm having the same issues with my PC and a GTX770.
It's the connection.
I plugged a wifi stick in, set it up as ad-hoc, enabled the gaming/multimedia environment driver flag, disabled powersaving and now it's all fine.

Blimey sounds elaborate. I have disabled power saving in windows already in the power plan settings. how do you enable the gaming/multimedia environment driver flag?
go into the device manager, choose your wifi adapter -> properties, the flags should be there in the advance tab but it depends on your driver.

Ah I see. Assuming it's under network adapters there is a driver but no option for multimedia/gaming to be enabled which is a shame. Might have look into wifi dongles then (
Ok so I disabled the wireless airport mini card via control panel/network connections
I then plugged in the TP-Link USB wifi dongle. Connected to the internet (works fine).
I then started gamestream and tried to play several games. BORDERLANDS 2 and Max Payne 3. Both were stuttery messes that kept shutting down.
I then loaded up Skyrim and for some odd reason the graphic settings were all stupidly low but it seemed to run fine then?!
Very odd. Any ideas on what the problem is. I can stream my Vita onto PS4 via my router with no issues whatsoever but the shiled is a juddery, crashy mess.
I also have an Alienware M17X R3 with a 680M card installed. I tested it out on that and it seems much smoother. Doesn't shut down on start up and is reasonable. still slightly stuttery but not game breaking.
You need wireless G at the very minimum to stream games. It is similar to playing a LAN game over wireless and you get lag and your player skips around. It is the same concept streaming the game as you are actually playing on the PC but viewing the video feed and controlling it from the Shield. A butt load of data is going back and fourth. Really it would not hurt to have wireless N if you do not.
I have wireless N router and bot the dongle, airport extreme card and the netgear have wireless N.
N is fine, theyre backward compatible to both G and B.
u sure you updated both nvidia driver and GeForce Experience?
otherwise I can just think that there is another wifi network that is interrupting yours.

Was wondering the same thing so I attached an ethernet cable from the mac to the router to get as honest a signal as possible. It seemed to work a bit better, played max payne 3 for about 10 minutes before it started to stutter and crash again. Very odd, might be CPU or even the router but cannot tell at this moment in time.
My mac is about 2 1/2 metres away from the router with no walls between them s
Is there a way to directly stream from PC to shield without need to go through router to check?
Here's the router I'm using. It should be good enough!

Been looking into replacing it with the newer Sky hub SR102 router. Here are it's specs, seem pretty much the same except it's a little bit more ready for fibre optic broadband
Wireless:
• 2.4GHz 802.11n standard, backwards compatible with 802.11 b/g standards
• 2×2 MIMO with internal antennas, 144Mbps maximum data transmission rate
• Smart Signal Selection – automatically and dynamically selects optimum wireless channel
• Wi-Fi Alliance certified
Ok I bought an Asus DSL N66U which has dual band 2.4ghz and 5ghz signals. Its maximum is 450Mbps but it's still stuttery and poor signal. The nvidia shield cuts out after a little while. Am wondering where the problem is. It can't be the router!
Ok so this is a thing...
Theres an advanced settings option on the Nvidia Shield for gamestream settings. It can allow you to adjust the max FPS 60 or 30, and the bit rate. There are two options - one for wifi and the other for ethernet connections. I changed FPS to 30 and it's much smoother now.
If you have stutter issues it may help

[Q] No 5ghz wireless detection with Lollipop

Hi all,
Strange problem following my OTA lollipop update yesterday. My (UK WIFI version) Shield tablet is unable to detect my router's 5ghz signal. Kit Kat had no problems and all my other devices can still see it fine. I have also tried changing the settings on my router to see if Lollipop is more fussy about frequency/band etc, but still no joy
Anyone else having strangeness with this? Or is it just me?

I flashed the US ROM last night, and during setup it took maybe an additional 20 seconds before the 5ghz routers (including mine) to show up in the list. 5ghz has always been kinda weird for me though. On a few occasions I've had to disable WiFi, wait 10 seconds, then restart so that the tablet will connect.
I also have the UK wifi version, and my tablet even connected first to the 5ghz network, I was actually surprised.
No issues here with 5ghz wireless.

Thanks guys,
It's very odd, because I run wifi analyzer at home and it doesn't show my 5ghz network at all, yet in the office it does show the 5ghz one.
It was working before the update and all my other devices can still connect fine, so a real mystery

Reboot the router?
I'm having this issue with my Nexus 4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/lollipop-5ghz-wifi-t2945330
Upon further inspection, it appears the only 5ghz channels that work are the first couple in band A (36 - 48) Nothing else seems to work.
Can anyone else confirm this behaviour? Try using a 5ghz channel other than 36 - 48
Band A : 5150 - 5350 MHz (channels 36 - 64)
Band B: 5470 - 5725 MHz (channels 100 - 140)
This is pretty rubbish if this is the case, as the band B channels allow a higher output and give me a much stronger signal in my house

I can only connect when I use channels 36-48, Band A UNII 1. Can't even detect the AP with WiFi Analyzer on the shield if I go above 48.
Using the non-US 32GB LTE version in the EU, btw, same frequencies are allowed here as in the US.

Sorry, you're right 48 does also work.
So that's confirmed then, they have for some reason heavily limited the 5ghz channel selection! I wonder why?
It's not a hardware limitation as it was working fine with KitKat, so I wonder whether it's possible to get the other channels unlocked?
Just to be sure, ClownShoes, does channel 140 work for you? I can't test this because my fritzbox router doesn't have an option to change channel width to 20MHz, and channel 140 isn't available to me for this reason.
Same problem for me here. No 5ghz detected when my Xperia Z1 Compact detect it . Even Wifi Analyzer can't see it . I restarted my tablet & stuff, nothin' . I'll try to make a nandroid backup, make a fresh install and I will see the result.
Same problem for me here with my samsung galaxy note 3 32 gb(sm-n9005). If I restart router phone view and connect to 5 GHz. When phone leave coverage are for same hours when come back don't see 5 Ghz wireless. This is strange because I have another phone with windows which work perfect. I will try to change wireless channel if don't work, I thing serious to go back at android 4.4.2
Update: I changed channel from auto to 48 and works.
Just dropping in to say I had the same issue: I had my router on channel 112 and the Tablet wasn't even seeing it.
Switched to 48 and everything works fine now.
Same issue here, hoping Android 5.1 fixes this silly issue. I was wondering why i couldnt see the 5Ghz network at channel 140, 80mhz. had to bring it down to channel 48.
US wifi version here. 5.1 Lollipop, stock rooted.
I can connect to channel 149 with turbo mode (40MHz channel width) & the upper Extension channel, but WiFi analyzer shows my router is broadcasting on channel 153. I tried so many other channels & combinations but this is as high up as I could go & have the tablet connect. It did, however, see channel 161 but got an authentication error & wouldn't connect with the router.
So, back to 149. The signal is slightly stronger & have better throughput than channel 48!
On a side note...I use 5GHz here in this LARGE apartment complex because everyone here is on Verizon FIOS or Cox Communications, so Wi-Fi Analyzer sees 17 (give or take a few for signal strength or weakness) access points around my place & the 2.4 band is completely choked up! There is only 1 other router close by on 5GHz, so using that band is the only option for wireless internet here. I don't use Verizon's wireless AP. They only have 2.4 wireless, no 5. My Netgear simultaneous dual band router is plugged into the back of their cable modem & my Netgear is on 192.168.2.1. That way I can use DD-WRT & my own router instead of theirs for wireless. Easy-Peasy!:good:
I have the same issue. After switching my channel from 100 to 40 the 5GHZ wifi showed up on (two) shield tablets just fine
I believe the SHIELD Tablet only supports United States Non-DFS channels, so 36-48 and 149-165. I personally have mine on Channel 149 and 80MHz bandwidth.

WiFi Unstable Issues

Anyone having problems with WiFi? My phone seems to easily disconnect from WiFi with the excuse of "Avoided poor internet connection". And it seems to have become worse after the v15e update. My phone is the H959 model from Singapore.

Give us some more info
Whats your router?
You are connected at 2.4 or 5ghz?
Are your channels congested? Try to find a better channel using wifi analyser

It happens on any network. I was on holiday in the US, and it kept dropping the connection. I thought it was just because hotel WiFi are just ****ty in general, but it happened at home and at work too.
The WiFi at home is an ASUS RT-AC68U, and I'm connected to the 5 GHz channel, and channel congestion is not a problem. 2.4 GHz is congested a lot, but the disconnect happens on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Most of the time, I would pick up the phone, and try to access a website and it would take forever. After a while it would say "Internet connection unavailable at *wifi name*". Then after a reconnect it usually works, and loads the page instantly.
At work, I'm wearing an Android Wear watch and installed the network change notifier, so every 10 minutes or so, my watch would tell me that I have disconnected from the WiFi and after 5 minutes it will connect back again... Signal strength is excellent, channel congestion is horrible, but it shouldn't disconnect that many times.

My house WiFi is an ASUS RT-AC68U, and I'm connected to the 5 GHz channel, and the channel is pretty much clear. 2.4 GHz is congested a lot, but it happens on mostly any network.

You seem to have a good rooter. With all my >snapdragon 800 phones and tablets wifi works perfect .
Connection between phone and router is 433mbps. Before you hard reset your phone try to change channel . And try to keep your connected devices at minimum 2 or 3. You can also try pseudo static ip instead of dhcp

All my other devices, be it computers, tablets, older phones, do not have this problem. The problem I face is really similar to this thread below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g-flex2/help/wifi-woes-t3197144
I suspect it is due to a setting that is found in KitKat to "Avoid poor connections" but that is not found here. When doing a speedtest.net I can get 200+ mbps, so speed is not a problem. My phone just doesn't like to stay connected... Probably will try a hard reset, just need to backup my data.

Wi-fi dropping?

I have an ASUS wireless router, and my wi-fi connection at home is dropping all the time (especially while playing Hearthstone, frustratingly). Is anyone else experiencing this and/or know how to fix it?
My experience has been that the wifi on my phone works great, leading me to wonder about either your router or your environment.
questions and things to try
1. Does you phone work well with other access points? i.e. is the problem only at home but it works elsewhere?
2. is your home a "noisy" wifi environment? i.e. lots of other nearby access points or other devices in the 2.4 Ghz band?
a. Get an app from the play store called Wifi analyzer (its free). You can see a chart with all the access points your phone can see and what chanel they are using. It can show both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands.
b. If your router is showing up on the same channel or a nearby channel as one or more other access points, try manually setting the channel on your router to something else that no one else is using or near.
c. If you router is dual band (i.e. has both 2.4 and 5 ghz) and you are using 2.4 Ghz, try using 5 Ghz. You can set your 2.4 and 5.0 Ghz to different SSID's (network names) so that you can easily tell which one you are connected to.
3. Do other wireless devices you have also have connectivity problems? Consider a new router?
I had problems with wifi dropping. I went to Comcast and swapped out my modem for a new modem/router and haven't had the problem since

I've had very poor speeds on WiFi compared to my nexus 6p. Annoying it's so slow

I suspect the issue has to do with my Asus router. Apparently Samsung devices and Asus routers don't play well, according to what I've read, but I have no idea how to fix it.

Wifi Hotspot tethering disconnect when moving through congested spectrum

Hi there,
I have a Pixel 3 and my laptop randomly disconnects from the wifi hotspot, when I am moving through areas with high wireless congestion. I used a Redmi Note 4 with LineageOS before and did not have that problem. It only happens when I am on the train and I also see lots of messages like this in the logs of the laptop:
wlp2s0: CTRL-EVENT-SIGNAL-CHANGE above=1 signal=-38 noise=9999 txrate=650000
And especially this one:
wlp2s0: CTRL-EVENT-CHANNEL-SWITCH freq=5200 ht_enabled=1 ch_offset=-1 ch_width=80 MHz cf1=5210 cf2=0
wlp2s0: CTRL-EVENT-CHANNEL-SWITCH freq=2457 ht_enabled=1 ch_offset=0 ch_width=20 MHz cf1=2457 cf2=0
Often times, the laptop seems to be able to follow the channel changes, but sometimes it doesn't. I continuously ping the ip of the Pixel 3 (which, btw. switches, every time I activate the hotspot, within the 192.168.43 subnet, I had 192.168.43.81, 192.168.43.35, 192.168.43.60, ...). The laptop still shows it's connected, but the ping to the phone fails.
Those frequency changes even jumps bands. Initially I would be in the 5Ghz band, but the Pixel 3 would switch to the 2.4Ghz band during operation. Presumably, because the 5Ghz band is too busy. I believe the disconnects (which aren't really detected by the network manager of the laptop) are connected to the channel changes, since I usually see a message for a channel change in the logs around the time I lose connectivity.
The options in the hotspot dialogue are very limited. Thus I was able to try all combinations, except for turning off encryption.
I am currently using Android 9 Pie, since we are getting 10 Q soon, maybe it will be better.
The laptop is running Debian GNU/Linux 10, but the wifi chip is fairly old (Intel Corporation Wireless 7265) and well supported, so I don't expect that to be the issue. I am also thinking about filing a bug with network-manager for failing to detect the loss of connectivity, but since I did not have the issue with the Redmi Note, I am also looking at the Pixel 3 as a potential way to fix this issue for me.
Are there more options hidden or other accessible, such as turning off the channel switches
I am now running Android 10 and still have the same issue, unfortunately. I also presented this issue over at the Google support forums:
https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/14799895?hl=en
So far, no solution.
