[Q] How much battery will "ok google" detection from any screen use? - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Also, turning on the lock screen hotword detection - will this destroy my battery life, or will it be negligible?

It´s nothingfor the Batterie. You can turn it allways on.

Erm... If our Z3 is "always listening", it cannot switch to "CPU sleep mode" as it's CPU is constantly busy with analyzing audio streams.
So there MUST be a noticeable impact on battery life.

OK Google does not work when the display is off, so it can go into deep sleep. I use it and have not noticed significant battery drain

'Always' is a little misleading. It's only listening when the screen is on and unlocked.

Not quite true. It is ALWAYS listening when the screen is on. Mine works even from the lockscreen, if you change the language to English US the options are enabled in the "OK Google" detection settings.

Ah, I see !
Didn't have the chance of trying out myself, even after using "Ok Google everywhere" and switching the main language to English and activating the feature in the options; just did not work.
But if it doesn't work with the screen off, I don't see too much sense in it: I regard that "always listening" feature as a nice add-on if you're wearing a headset, allowing you to keep the phone in your pocket. As this does not work, I can easily live without it.

But how about this, when I have it in my car attached to a Bluetooth speaker and on charge, I can leave the screen on and use OK Google from the lockscreen without having to touch the phone, hence I am not breaking any UK driving laws which basically say you cannot touch the phone to operate it, you need a full handsfree kit (Including when dialing and answering, not just speaking)

[Q] Shorten wifi sleep timeout after screen off (Solved)

In the wifi sleep policy, it is possible to set wifi to sleep after screen off. However wifi does not sleep immediately but 15 minutes after screen off. I would like wifi to sleep earlier, say 5 minutes after screen off.
I searched around and found an app capable of doing this. But it is for samsung phones and doesn't work for defy. Does anyone know if and how it can be set manually?
Juicedefender. That is the exact app to use.
I tried Juice Defender. There are options to disable wifi based on connection existence, preset time, data flow etc, but there is no option to set the how long after screen off wifi would sleep.
Here you go, this should do what you want: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774507
Good luck
Hmm I actually set my wifi to never turn off automatically. For instance yesterday I made a phonecall with Skype. My mobile connection is too slow for that so I switched the wifi on. During the phonecall I had the screen turned off but of course the wifi needed to stay on.
I have a widgetsoid widget on my homescreen to enable/disable the wifi. Don't like it when things go automatic and it's just as easy when you need wifi only once in a while.

Thanks! Unfortunately moto doesn't have the settings.db file. I tried putting the mentioned key "wifi_idle_ms" in several other files but no effect.
Edit:
Stupid me. I find the location of settings.db and it works perfectly now
For information, the location of defy's settings.db is:
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db

Thanks guys; I can now listen to TuneIn radio as long as I want (or my battery allows me to).
If you intend to save battery, maybe you should consider leave "wireless policy" to "never sleep".
It might sound senseless but there are a lot of people reporting substantial battery savings with this, including me, i noticed at least +20 hours in battery life only with this little thing. Charts drawn with Battery Monitor showed the same consumption, Wireless OFF. vs Wireless policy to never sleep. And the most expensive was policy of sleep when screen turned off.

What the F is keeping my phone awake?

Probably Google Now and hotword detection. Also do you have WiFi "Scanning always available" on?
I have a related problem and didnt want to open another post. Not sure, maybe its better to do that? Dont want to steal topic.
Also, im sorry but i cannot provide battery tesing app results since im not allowed to root it...and as far as i know root is need to detect wakelocks on kitkat.
But i can provide an error report. Maybe that helps the pros. This happens on a fresh Nexus 5, without any apps besides the preinstalled gApps.
But not constantly, it didnt happen the last 2 days before. Every time it happens it is after a longer period of use. For example if i dont use it a lot and manage to come 2 days with the battery cycle and then charge the mobile, it happens after charging. But it never happened yet when i use device a lot and charge it more frequently. But that can be a coincidence too, dont let you irritate by that now. 4.4.4 Android. But sure is that both times, the only 2 times, it happened right after pull out the charger.
This is pic and error report:

Depends on what you want to use when screen is off. It just means that wifi is alwayys on. If not, if your phone goes into standby mode the 3G connection takes over. If you have no special data rate you can let wifi on. Your active time is pretty normal for a phone. If auto-sync is on and google now and all that, maybe facebook or whatsapp or even more. Newsapps that push all that does this.
What i would more worry about is your signal. Its very low and probably uses alot of battery. If i recheck your pic i would probably really better let Wifi on if your at home at least, so your 3G connection doesnt always have to work so much. Of course all this is only if you want to have internet...if you know you wont use it anyway, turn it off.
Until its not like me screen above i would not worry too much.
I have google now turned off it was doing way to many wakelocks. I do have hotword on but if I'm correct it only listens when the screen is on. I'm having an issue when the screen is off the phone still keep a waking up.
by the looks of it, its your apps and setup most likely. but its fairly normal, not that many wakeups/wakelocks as many others have. wakelocks are how our phones work, generally they are normal and expected. system apps/processes and user apps create them. only when the process thats associated with the wakeocks get stuck or run amuck, is when they are bad. and yours arent stuck, nor amuck.

Low signal data, Google Now location based cards and Battery Saver or High accuracy mode. This combination gives me the same awake lines as seen here.
Technically having the WiFi on (or "always scanning") should help so it's not solely reliant on the weak data signal, but it doesn't seem to.

being awake 20% of the time is not much. if you have apps that get notifications, check locations, or are just designed to occasionally check stuff, those are the one thatll cause most the wakelocks.

Guess it's just the WiFi locations in general. When on WiFi it'll rarely wake the phone only data. Google Search then shows more wake time so I figured it'd be Gnow.

See a comparison I did here, both with Battery Saver mode on. When using data the phone wakes constantly in its attempt to resolve location based information. In theory, having the WiFi chip enabled should help but it doesn't seem to do much.

OK Google voice detection.is not functioning

Set voice retrain, set in trusted voice also can't seems to wake the device.
Ok Google can't wake the device. It only works while the phone screen is on.
Beamed in by telepathy.
mine wake up just fine when i say ok google even the screen is off..restart the phone then try again
Wakes up just fine with screen off here too. Trusted voice as I also have a lockscreen with pin.
Thanks for replying guys, let me try.btw, I am using English US as default language.
Solved: Power Saver feature did interfered with the function, off it OK Google can works as normal.
I had this issue today it was pissing me off lol. I think it was the power save feature. Don't even need the power save feature with this beast.
Power saving mode will keep "OK Goggle" from working. If its on, try turning it off.
I almost went crazy thanks for the tip
Thank you as well. My HTC U11 was plagued with the same issue today. I had fat fingered Battery Saver which was on since morning. Now I wonder whether that could be the cause for the non functioning "OK Google" on the new OnePlus 5T.

"OK Google" listening active only when screen is on?

Hello,
I would like to somehow set Google assistant "ok Google" command listening to be active only when screen is on / phone is unlocked. By default phone listens for "ok Google" even when screen is off which is creepy / probably drains battery and its totally useless as assistant cannot do anything when phone is locked and Voice Match to unlock screen is not working anyway. Any advice?
BTW I'm rooted with magisk on OOS 9.5.9 so I'm open to any solution.
I have disabled Ok Google detection for a 1.5 days now and I think standby drain improved significantly, I was getting about 1,5% / h and now 0,5%! So it is big difference but still I would like to use assistant with OK Google when screen is unlocked..
Anybody knows a way do to it? Maybe using Tasker/automate?

1. It doesn't drain battery because its not handled by the CPU, but by the DSP.
2. You cant turn it off only for screen off.

Assuming DSP doesn't use battery?
The assistant regularly polls GPS for updated weather, occasionally sends data to google when idle, monitor it for a day and see what it does.
I sometimes sends snippets of voice before and after ok Google

I'll say it with other words - you wouldn't notica a difference in battery life if you could turn it off. And if you do => Placebo

Exactly my point. DSP must still drain battery, of course less than CPU (if it would be handled by CPU then it would never go to deep sleep...) but for sure it takes some + all the stuff around it (gps/data transfer etc).
No workaround? Maybe a widget or something?

Question Battery saving tip

Here's a tip to save battery while still preserving the most important functions of your S22.
Enable "Developer Options" and turn on the "Sensors Off" quick set toggle in the "Quick Set Developers Tiles" area.
This will give you a new "Sensors Off" quick toggle to enable or disable all the Sensors on the phone, including the camera and mic. I've found this saves quite a bit of battery while not affecting most everyday uses. Additionally, overnight, my S22 only used about 3% of battery in 6 hours of idle time.
The rest of your phone will continue to function like normal including the mobile network and Wi-Fi. This also comes in handy if you want a more private experience. To turn the sensors back on all it takes is a tap of the Sensors Off button in the notification shade.
Thanks will give it a go. Right now I'm losing about 6 to 7% overnight

So one needs to turn it back on whenever they want to make a call or use the camera and leave it off all the other times?
Just realized lift to wake doesn't work if you have sensors off.
Disabling the sensors I've noticed that turn on the screen by pushing the power button is slower. Can you please confirm this?

Same here. Most fun is my Huawei Mate 20x (my work phone) is using between 0-1% over night, around 7-8 hours
I checked last night, and my S22 Ultra used 3-4% battery in 6-7hrs overnight. That's without turning off sensors, and with all the battery 'optimisations' disabled. I use AOD, but have it on a timer so it's not running overnight.
I don't know why others are getting such poor battery life, it's very odd.
I'm losing around 1% per hour overnight, AOD off and with mobile data
Thanks for the tip
