Hello,
I received a replacement nexus 5. I had a rather large custom dictionary that transferred flawlessly from my Nexus 4 to Nexus 5.
This replacement phone (a refurb unit) would not sync beyond gmail, calendar, and contacts. No apps, no personal dictionaries.
Please advise as to what to do, as my dictionary is over 1200 words and between two languages. I used the app "User Dictionary Manager" which transferred the dictionary, but dumped my two custom dictionaries into one single one to be used between languages.
Please help!
Thanks!

The Google Keyboard? Does not contain auto sync. You would have to pull the database manually.

My dictionaries from my Nexus 4 were transferred, or so I thought...
Where can I find the databases? It is over 1200 words, that was a lot of work! Thanks!

If that is indeed where the dictionary has it's db files, you'll need root.
You could also check /Android/data/ and see if it contains the db.

Sorry, I'm rather a newbie when it comes to this. Any way to root without losing all the settings, including the dictionaries? I googled directions, and they said all settings will be lost. Any easy ways to root the phone? Thanks!

With no wipe, Towelroot is probably your best option.

You know how tethering with PDANet allows you to use the sms client on your computer? Is there a similar app that connects via wifi/3g? When I'm at work I hate typing on that tiny-ass keyboard when I'm sitting at a full-size computer.
I use Google Voice when possible but I don't want my friends to need two phone numbers for me. I suppose I could just use GV as the primary...
Any ideas?
Look for smshare. I just found it three days ago, and it's awesome!

That looks pretty neat. No usb cable required?
No, no cables required.
The Data exchange is done over 2G or 3G Network.
But SMS isn't much data, so it won't hurt your Data limit.

Interesting... will check it out.
I have also tried bloove now, but i must say it is very limited if you use the free version.
No auto-Sync feature for the android app: You always have to start the app on your phone that the sms are sent. And also SMS are not stored if you have edited them on the webinteface.
The App has to be opened on your phone while you send the sms on the webinteface.
Smshare has all these features, but it's main problem is that the Addon is only available for Chrome right now, and until now it is not possible to send SMS directly from smshare's Webinterface. But according to smshares blog it will "soon" be possible to send SMS also through the webinterface. So i hope tis problem will be solved soon.

Yes, that is how things are working, we're going to add "always running" option in future versions.

Hi,
I am all new here at xda after reading here for some months already.
Currently I am using my good old HTC Desire Bravo (root, GingerVillain 3.3 ROM). But since yesterday I am the proud owner of a black Nexus 5 32GB.
Now - thats quite a big step I feel.
So of course I have some questions:
- how do I test if the device is ok? What to look for?
- I have no root yet on the Nexus - can I install my apps on the device selectively (root ones later)?
- what is the best way to get my apps+data and my "normal" data over to the nexus? No sdcard slot in the nexus! Via PC? Into what folder?
- I now use a screen protector foil. Do I need this also with the gorilla glas? If yes - clear or anti-reflex?
- I dont have a google+ account and dont want to use google now - or do I need to?
- Can I still write sms if I have no Hangout account?
Ok, so far for now. I think moving apps and data is most important for me at the moment.
Thanks,
Cheers
1) does it boot? Does the screen work? If yes... use it until you identify issues
2) no. You have to unlock the bootloader to root which wipes device. Read the root sticky top of q&a
3) I don't understand the question? Apps and data, restore any backup you have. Titanium? Over usb?
4) well the desire had gorilla glass too. Make your own decision
5) no
6) hangouts uses your Google Account. You have no Google account? Sms is not tied to your Google account

App: you can use airdroid or mobo deamon to install it manually.
Date: I dont know what is your date is, and not sure you can use date from your htc over the nexus 5 or not. Since nexus 5 using KitKat

No root required
Hi
OK, did not see that - could someone pls move my thread to Q&A?
- it does boot, screen looks ok (foil still on though). Just a quick first start up.
- I have my apps in my google account I thought. What I want to know is: will synching my ggogle account with the nexus bring ALL my apps at once to the device, or can I decide which ones at what time? Because there are a few who need root...
- with apps+data I mean for example WhatsApp+chats or my notes app + the notes archive etc; and of course music fotos etc
Hope that clarifies my questions.
Cheers

all your apps will download to your nexus. dont worry about the apps requiring root. actually, dont even waste your time setting this device completely up if you're going to unlock and root it later as the process wipes your device anyways.

Hm, ok. So I just deinstall what I do not need/want on the Nexus then after synching all apps?
But how do I get the app-data over to my nexus? Just copy to PC, connect the Nexus to PC, copy to the Nexus?
-> Did the place for app-data change in KitKat? Do I just copy all the app folders from my phone?
PS. Thanks for moving my thread - I thought my question was a "general" question.

If I understand right, to use my existing Titanium Backup I would also need to root the Nexus, then move my backup to the PC from the Desire and import to the Nexus after synching all my apps with my google account.
With Helium (need to install on both devices) I do not need root and it does the same job?

Unfortunately it seems Helium is not offered for my Desire.
Maybe someone can tell me what folders from my Desire I have to copy to what folder on the Nexus?
I will also try to export the Titanium Backup and import to the Nexus somehow.
I am not sure if I want to root so soon, do not know if I will keep the Nexus (many people seem to have a lot of issues with their Nexus)
All the data on your desire is in /data/data but you can't put that on your device easily without root

I know, but still its a bit disturbing.
Well, still do not know a good way to get my apps and their data safely to the nexus.
But I am just thinking - they will still be on my Desire, so I can try without worries. Hm, maybe Titanium is my best bet.
If you don't want to root now I would suggest you unlock the bootloader now. Doing so wipes your device and you don't want to do that once you get all your apps setup.
Use Google to backup your apps on your old device and then have it restore the apps to the n5. That's the easiest. But I just installed the ones I wanted from play store. You don't need to use Google+ or now. I usually freeze this as I don't use them and they seem to want to connect and use battery.
It makes no sense to set up anything before unlocking and while unlocking you might as well root.
Then use tb to move your apps and if you want to unroot after that go for it.
Hi There,
got my micro sim cutted today, so can start using the Nexus.
Apart from that I seem to experience the "added sim card, please reboot" bug, I still do not know how to transfer a TB backup from my Desire to the Nexus. Could someone give me a little instruction on that?
Generally I am not sure abt rooting - can I go back to unroot without problems? Am just a bit hesitant, but that was the same before rooting my Desire.
So I'm texting this girl with an unusual name not in the English dictionary. From what I recall her name was always in my texting dictionary from the start. But we had a recent fight and haven't texted in like a week. Is it likely that she deleted my number, or blocked me? Or perhaps I haven't typed her name in a while so it auto erased?

How should she without infiltrating your mobile? You seam really scared.. Her "name" is stored in phone or in the cloud you use. In what way should she have blocked you whatsapp or by her phone or a third party hack? I disable any kind of automatation i can find and is not REALLY necessarry on the mobile. Even forced many backgroundservives to close and deleted a vary of system apps. Shrinked permissions and wakelocks. I don't like it when my phone does acting on his own. I paid for it, so it has to do what i want instead of telling me what to do...

Hi Guys,
I have been considering it form a long, long time and I have finally decided to go root! (If for you that is nothing new, for me it is!) I believe I have read enough to try it, besides who have learnt only form reading? Now to the question - I have been thinking how would I be able to preserve the user data since it should delete all of it. I know that google automatically backs up my application data, but how reliable is that? What is your experience with the service? Also, I have applications that are form another store and I believe that Google won't back them up. I was thinking about using Helium or the adb backup command. What's your opinion on that?
Thanks

The end result of either of them will be the exact same, as Helium just uses adb backup.
And how about contacts? Should I, at least, rely on Google for that? Or should I do this manually? And since I have pictures attached to my contacts, would they back up, too?

Your Contacts app will also allow you to export contacts (but this exports pictures as really low-res) to your internal storage.

Thanks for the nice pieces of advice! Whenever I have time, I will try rooting and I will post the my experience.
My 7 week old Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6 G920VVRU4BOG9, android version 5.1.1. died yesterday for reasons unknown. It is now back on but has been wiped clean. I had to do what I believe is called a hard reset. I don’t care about anything else on this phone but I’m desperate to get back the pictures and videos. By any chance is it possible yet to recover deleted photos off of a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6 (G920VVRU4BOG9)? I've been reading about it since yesterday and everything tells me I must root my phone; however, it looks like from what I am reading, even if I wanted to, I canNOT root my particular Verizon S6 model. None of the android data recovery tools appear to work without 1st rooting my phone.
I stupidly do not have a backup of my phone as I believed the VZW cloud was backing up all my data. It did not save my pictures/videos, only my contacts. Samsung tech support was worthless. I’ve disconnected the WIFI and have done almost nothing on the cell today except exchange a few necessary text messages and phone calls. I don’t want to chance overwriting anything if it can somehow be retrieved/salvaged.
I’ve tried Wondershare Dr Fone for Android, Asoftech Data Recovery, Kvisoft Data Recovery, Ease US data recovery. None have worked. Again, from what I’ve been reading, a rooted phone appears to be required in order to locate that lost data using recovery software. The problem seems to be VZW.
Anyhow, I appreciate anyone’s 2cents. If you happen to know of any Geek Squad-like, paid for services, I’m willing to pay someone to get these picture and videos back. Thank you so much for your time!

I have a Samsung account so I can use the "find my phone" option in case of a lost or stolen phone. I asked them if they offer any cloud backup and the rep told me NO.
I do have a Google account and Google Drive as well. I couldn't find any of my pictures there though. I really appreciate your response though. Thank you!

Try changing your search parameters in Google Play....seems I recall a co-worker having a similar issue that he was able to partially resolve using apps that were specifically for Picture recovery. If that doesn't work, you are to the "find someone who can pull stuff off flash memory" stage.

I would install es file explorer on it and just go thru all the folders you can find. Even though you aren't rooted you can still copy files should you happen to find them or cache versions of them. You can copy you just can't modify or write to the system folders and such. I used this just yesterday to copy the launcher apk of my Moto Maxx 2 so I could copy out the stock wallpapers. Haha. Good luck.
