Video focus workaround ? - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm loving the phone so far but been a little disappointed regarding the camera. The pictures taken during the day are a big improvement over my one m8 but night time or indoors are hit and miss but overall I'm happy.
Video on the other hand I'm finding almost unusable. The continuous auto focus is very aggressive and seems to be always attempting to focus when your filming anything that's not stationery.
Is there a way to turn off auto focus and just have touch to focus on video like the m8?
Thanks in advance.

Sadly there doesnt seem to be much we can do till sony releases a fix.
Theres a big update planned for the camera app when android L is released with the z4 next feb/march, but hopefully we wont have to wait quite that long for an update/fix.
Sony have never been quick with updates though sadly.

That's a shame. I will have to keep my fingers crossed that they sort a fix soon.
Thanks for that pal.

no option to turn it off
but turn off steady shot
and set metering to spot
it can help alot
:good:

Find the 1+1 camera app.If you just want video with nothing fancy use it.It can focus(tap to focus) during video recording.

Both these tips have much improved things.
Thanks very much guys.

Nexus S FFC flash????

I was wondering if there is a app or someone can make the screen get bright right before you take a pic with the front camera kinda how there is a "flashlight" app for phones that dont have a led light and use the screen brightness just wondering if this would work for night time pics
searched around could not find anything on this at all so sorry if it was answered
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
i doubt it will work since it is facing you and not the real camera
Well what i was thinking is you take a pic of yourself with the front camera that the screen will get bright white kinda like a flash but just making it as bright white the screen can get for a second to see yourself better at night

I agree. That's very similar to my Mac desktop. The screen flashes right before it takes a self portrait. I bet an app can be created, but the issue might be auto focus. The front cam isn't all that great with auto focus so when the screen flash it might show a white blur.

On my nexus s it does not focus with the front camera justs takes the pic as is, is it suppose to autofocus? Im on nightly #31
Anyone know who we can talk to, to get something working?

Autofocus

The autofocus on the sensation is not working for close items you want to photograph.
An example:

Anyone other experiencing this?
Did you use the close up mode?? Mine focuses just fine..

I've had the opposite problem (tried to take a video of some paragliders), close ups are really sharp though. The automatic settings are a little bit unpredictable, might need to set the mode next time.

That makes it even worse. I called HTC and they suspected a firmware issue.
Im running 1.28.401.1
Yeah, I've had some issues with autofocus with close-ups, with the camera set to macro mode. When you tap on the object to focus it will go through its range of focal lengths and miss the subject. The only remedy to this is to move the phone further away. So it seems that the phone's lens/es are more capable of macro shots than the focussing system currently allows.
I called HTC and they said it might be software related and will probably fix this in next update. Let's hope so!
Having the same issue. It manages to focus fine but locks focus at the wrong moment. Glad to hear they'll fix this.
I definately not. Close up works better for me the autofocus does take a little patience but is worth it after its taken. It blows the g2x cam out of the water that's for sure!!

dude get a can of compressed air & clean out your PC. it'll thank you for the cleaning
I've got a similar problem, it appeared like 2 weeks ago, I cannot focus up close objects I've tried everything, it's as if the focus is stuck on something and never changes no matter what I do. I have changed the mode (close up or macro) different light and so on .. but I can never get a focus It doesn't even attempt to focus. It used to work before when I played around with the setting if I would switch on/off some of the things the camera would magically "wake up" and start focusing, any Idea ?
It's one of the things that HTC broke in the 2.3.4 update. Macro mode worked great before that (i used to use it for bulk barcode scanning, but that is impossible now).

Idk bout that im with 2.3.5, sence 3.5, sense-o-maniac 1.47
Edit:
So I flashed another rom, played around a bit and now it works Im uploading some pics for you to see the difference. pics taken from distance of about 2-3 cm.

If anyone wants to know the roms or anything I did, just msg me I don't wanna badmouth any roms or anyone.

fix for the flash and shutter speed on camera??

Is there a way to make our flash not quite as obnoxious (it is on for like 5 seconds, then off, then on again for another 2 or so before taking the picture...), and also make the camera take the picture a little more quickly??
I noticed this last night.

Are you using the LG camera app? The flash comes on initially to allow the camera to focus more accurately. Then it flashes again for the actual exposure. You can mess around with the flash and focus settings to find the settings you like. It doesn't personally bother me though that the flash works this way because it makes for a better focused image.

Yes, it is good for focusing on static images, but for anything you want to take of picture of more quickly (people smiling, which no one likes to have to do for 10 seconds when it could just be 1 or 2) or any other action shot, it fails. If you're at all familiar with the Samsung Fascinate, the flash for that is much quicker, and yet its pictures are just as crisp and focused...
I've tried messing around with the focus settings but haven't found one to help speed up the flash and shutter.
Okay, just figured out that if you focus manually, the flash is instant. This is a good fix for all low- and medium-light situations, but it is no fix when it's really dark. The problem, of course, is that you can't manually focus when it's really dark because you the subjects don't show up and thus can't be focused on... So is there a work-around for these situations, or is that the time we leave it on auto focus and just endure the long-ass flash?
One workaround I've found is that in auto-focus mode if you press and hold the shutter button it will focus but won't take the photo until you release the shutter button. When you do release it, it takes the photo without delay. Its not effective in every situation but it helps.
I also turned off the instant preview and that makes it much quicker to take multiple photos in succession.

[Request] Smart Stay from GS3

Smart stay app from the GS3 is very interesting and something that we need for our beloved G Note.
Many apps from GS3 have been ported to Note like the Svoice but I have not seen any single thread where there is a mention of the Smart Stay.
Are developers working on porting the Smart Stay to Note ??
Please this is something that will surely improve our experience with the Note
I am sorry but what its all about
i thing GNote have not sensor .
I bet it makes use of the front camera, so no special sensor is required.
@deadlyheart4u it's a feature that will prevent the screen from turn off (sleep) if the system detects your eyes are busy reading something on screen. Clever huh?

Even I feel the same that is only n using the front camera. Hope someone it's able to clear doubts

It's using front camera, after timeout settings time is reached, you will see a short "blink" of the screen, and the camera sensor takes over "timeout" function.
check Engadget's review of the phone (the video).
I tried the phone myself and it is not using the frontcamera, since this would use too much battery. They have placed 2 sensors next to the camera that are using low power/battery compared to the camera.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
It can't be the sensors, as those 2 are proximity sensor and light sensor.
Even on the release they said it used the camera.
it is indeed the front camera that checks ur eyes...
as i saw..it works from browser...maybe the browser has this feature?
It does use the front camera. It works in a similar way to face unlock.

Front Camera + Blink Detection !!
So now that we have how it works is someone working on porting this application to our note.

Well i am expecting smart call also, that is only gesture based, If the msg client is open and you turn you're phone straight means phone should make call.....hoping a quick apk

+1 on that
I would love smart stay on note as well
Yes... Smart stay and smart call.are both great features to have on more.

Common developers, I am sure you guys with your great knowledge will be easily ble to crack it.
Another one i miss is the pick up the phone to your ear to answer a call without touchng the screen
I was quite impressed when I saw / read about this feature. I like to read while on the go (one of the reasons why I got the might Note) and having to switch on the screen every now and then just annoys me. Hopefully somebody will be able to port it or create a replica
I don't know why but people were fast to port the tw but no one seems instated in porting the most useful feature to note.

Why port a small feature when you can just port the whole rom? Still, it doesn't seem like anyone is willing to start porting it.

[Q] Autofocus

So im thinking about getting a nexus 5 but I want to know if the autofocus issue was ever fixed?? I love taking photos and videos but if the autofocus makes the camera not really useable in a lot of circumstances then I probably wont get it. Tried to find another thread to see if this problem was corrected by developers via a rom or a flash or if it is hardware related.
I have never had an issue. And I take plenty of photos.

+1 for photos. Not for video though. The autofocus is terrible in videos. It's constantly focusing every 2-3 seconds and it makes the video look really odd.
To OP: No, it hasn't been fixed.
The videos I have taken look just fine. I have a puppy and took videos of her running in the snow and they all came out good.

Not my video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFxHkuAfj48
Notice the "pulsing" every 2-3 seconds? That's what I mean. If yours doesn't have that, that's good, but most of us have that problem. I guess it's only noticeable when you don't move the camera.
So based that it is feburary, I'm assuming this is a hardware issue. The video breathing problem is ridiculous and also happens on the Nexus 5. That's my concern. If it has been solved in a rom, then perfect, but if this problem is unfixable then thats a dealbreaker for me. I do alot of videos with my phone and I dont want to pay for a $600 phone if I cant do something basic as record videos on it.

If you are that interested in videos, you should consider in investing an actual video camera. Phones aren't really meant to meet the standards of camcorders and other video capture devices, rather than to just catch an interesting moment of someones live with a casual photo/video. I know it sounds rather inconvenient and superficial, but thats just my two cents on the subject.
Edit: I've never had trouble with the breathing video. But then again I don't really use that option that much.
I can't reproduce the refocus whilst holding it still / panning left or right. I can only reproduce it if I move the lens further or nearer to the object. Not a tiny amount that's analogous with a slight wobble or the human conditions rather feeble attempt at stillness - no. I have to almost exaggerate the movement to trigger autofocus
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
for me it refocuses evety time i move the phone, left/right, up/down, or further/closer. but it doesnt refocus at all when im moving.
not to be graphic but I filmed a video of some dirty deeds and quality was awesome. phone was not moving. I believe some roms have more issues then others. some roms the video is extremely dark and some roms when I take a camera picture with flash is snaps the photo to fast and just captures the flash.
