Issues with Mobile Data Rapidly turning on/off after using hotspot - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Hi all -
I recently updated to the 4.4.3 VzW firmware and upgraded from Viper 1.8.0 to Viper 2.5.0. Since upgrading, I have been having troubles with my hotspot. After being on and other devices have been using it for a bit, my M8 begins to rapidly turn on/off the Data Connection. This doesn't stop and the only way to fix the problem is go into airplane mode and back out again. I figured that I may have had a bad flash, so i tried reflashing clean downloads of both the firmware and a full wipe and reinstall of ViperOne, but still seeing the exact same issue. I seem to be also experiencing a problem where my phone is reporting a 4G connection, but data is disconnected and i cannot get anything over the data channel. Voice works fine. Again, to fix it's a cycle through airplane mode.
I tried applying the changes recommended by for the 4G handoff fix, even though the problem described does not seem to be exactly the same as mine. It did not seem to help, and mae it even harder to get a reliable 4G connection.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/general/verizon-4g-handoff-fix-t2868778
Has anyone else seen anything like this and have any recommendations for a fix?

Just realized this would be better in the troubleshooting forum. Is there a way for me to move it there or does that require a moderator?

Check http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/help/loss-lte-data-using-ap-t2900047

I have had the same thing, going back to 1.55.605.2 FW does seem to be the fix, I think its something with 4.4.3 FW.
One of the so called improvements is Mobile hotspot connectivity, but maybe that's only with phones that don't use the patched default.xml,
the ones that really pay for the mobile hotspot.

Thanks for the reply - do you have a link for the old firmware, so i can flash and revert back to that?

Also - are you still running Viper 2.x or did you roll back to a prior ROM as well?

After some more searching, i found this link for stock 4.4.2 on VzW, but was wondering if anyone has the firmware only, so don't have to restore recovery, and rom afterwards.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2727831
I certainly can and will do it, if necessary, just would prefer to have the firmware only, if someone has it available. Anyone?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Thanks, downloaded and reverted. Long boot times, but things working. Now to give the hotspot a few tests. I'll update with my results.

initial tests are very promising. hotspot seems to be stable and hasn't dumped the data connection yet. Looks like good old VzW managed to screw up the firmware update as usual. Would be nice if they didn't always to be different. Thank god for these forums and the hardworking devs here!

I spoke too soon. Still seeing the same issue after reverting the FW back to 1.55.605.2. Anyone seeing this? Any thoughts on if reverting back to Viper 1.8 would help?

I don't think it is the firmware that is the issue, I think it is the kernel. You should be good going back to Viper 1.8 as it uses an older kernel. I would think you would also be fine using the newer firmware and an older ROM version.

I'm starting to believe this as well, that there's something flaky in the 2.x Viper ROMS for VzW and hotspots, and likely in the kernel. I've already reverted back to the old firmware, and I'm going to go back to a clean 1.7.x full install, then OTA to 1.8. Will update with the results.

You could flash back to stock firmware and try again. If the error persists then the files are probably not right for your phone.

The files the OP pulled are for his phone based on the baseband shown. It looks like it may be related to the OTA update that came through recently.

That explains it, the OTA update includes a slightly changed kernel (based on what I saw in the diffs) that is likely causing your WiFi issue. Can you try applying motorhead's kernel from here and see if WiFi starts working? I know it is not a full fix, but it should get your wifi back to working while motorhead and I coordinate on getting a stock kernel that can be flashed from CWR put together.
YEEEEE HAAAAWWWWW
I got some WIFI !!!!
Camera, BT and sound, seems like everything works.
Can't imagine why not a "Full fix".
Thank You !!!!
Says there is an OTA update, after it downloads, I get tossed into CWM bootloader 6.1.1 and the update doesn't get applied.
All I do is choose 'reboot system'.
Also I'm getting ...
"[ AT&T Address Book] Checking Subscriber Information"
when I touch contacts.
I am not an AT&T customer, I use STLK the BYOP program.
We really need a custom ROM for this great device, no bloat, no AT&T updates, no AT&T bloatwares, No CIQ, No City ID.
I would be HAPPY to PAY for a custom ROM and have it delivered two weeks from last Thursday. Jellybean?
Someone like me who chooses a rugged phone may not be into all the bells and whistles, so a basic stripped down
ROM would be great.
and yes, I am getting lag coming out of deep sleep. may have to hit power button twice to unlock.
Can't wait to try Motorheads soon to be released power kernel...

There is an updater app you can freeze to prevent this from running. Nicedream06 and motorhead1991 have it disabled w/o ill effects.

Working on it with a few others "right now". We have stable boot in ICS (CM9 and AOSP builds) but the modem is dead. No cell service at all. There are other problems but we are focused on getting the antenna up and going.

Check the super thread. I have an ODIN image that is pretty stripped down and it includes the 6.x version of CWR. I left a few things in "just in case" but they can easily be stripped out using any of the various root tools for removing system apps.

The lag is a noted issue, along with the WiFi shutting off randomly and intermittently. I'm researching these issues as much as I can to find a fix, but I can only do so much so fast .
I was going to start a new thread but then I found this. I too had the issue with I the wifi turning off and the screen lag. After reflashing the no bloat Odin image and the 1.1 kernel my wifi turns on, but does not find any networks. It just searches then shuts off? Any ideas? I wonder if the stock kernel being worked on would fix this or if there is something else wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I sent the rugby smart to SAM to have it completely reloaded. when it comes back, i will try to make a back up much like i make an image of a hard drive...if that's possible.
For my PC, I have an image of this existing hard drive. If i pull it out and put in a BLANK hard drive, I can write the image to the new disk with all my apps installed...I use that feature often with my pc's and others...for mine, I frequently make a new updated image and delete the oldest one.
Once I change the bootloader, is it possible to get it back if I backed up with with Kies?
You guys are in luck. Kernel1.2 should be out shortly with the lag and wifi fixed . I'm waiting to hear back from another tester, but so far ut's proven stable. I've only had one error pop up, and that was after running pretty hard.
Motorhead1991, Is this for the Samsung Rugby Smart?
How much of, if any, overclocking??
Can you also tweak a non-overclocked version without "City ID" app, "Carrier IQ" app and possibly no AT&T bloatware??
You rock for everything thus far
No overclocking just yet, but I'm giving it hell. On the bright side, Kemonine and myself are currently treading in uncharted territory for this device (see if anyone gets my reference)
And to answer your question, yes it'll be for the Rugby.

Yeah, it actually did hurt to ask that one.
So after flashing the following new odin images
•Stock boot / kernel:
•Stock Boot + Stock Recovery + Stock System:
•Stock Boot + CWR 6.0.1.2 + No Bloat System:
My WiFi still turns on, searches for a while, finds nothing and turns back off! I have no idea what to do next. Any ideas?

When you flashed via ODIN did it show it was flashing the boot area? In the status window it should tell you which images are being flashed to the device. Can you re-try the stock boot/kernel ODIN image and confirm it did flash the boot image?
That is the only thing that booted. As soon as I selected the image I got a "MD5 checksum failed" prompt. The "start" button changed to the same message but it let me click it and it loads the boot.img. Does that help at all?

[Q] Flashing to stock - phone force closes process com.android.phone, help

Please bare with me since this is the first time having to post for an issue since I usually find an answer on your forums
So here's the situation.
I bought the photon q 4g lte from ebay and it came with the unlocked bootloader.
Needless to say it was with the stock ics and i tried to find a jellybean update because it wasn't taking the ota and ended up going with cyanogen since i had no problems before. However those phones i had before were with sim cards not cdma.
I found out i couldn't update prl or profile manually without having to do something on the pc.
So after searching left and right i found i could use rsl lite (I used 6.1.5) and eventually found the "stock" file from this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095536&highlight=rsd+lite
I did the stock jellybean, got it to go through the process and it booted up with no errors.
However, when it boots into the os it pops up a force close on omadmclient_sprint_dataservice and eventually also on the process com.android.phone.
I tried putting it in airplane mode to see if the service error would go away but it didn't work for the process part crashing.
I tried re-flashing, deleting cache in recovery, doing a data/factory reset in recovery and the one time i was able to do a data factory reset within the settings menu.
I could not find anyone that said they had a rom that worked with sprint and updating prl within the rom, if anyone knows of one let me know and i will flash it through rsd.
Otherwise does anyone have an idea of what could be happening because googling the omadmclient part did not pull up anything specific and pulling up the process issue for other phones has not helped me either.
Was this a hacked GSM phone, or are you using it as CDMA?
I've never heard of people having FC issues after flashing a FXZ from RSD. Which one did you flash? Android 4.1.2 - Sprint US - 9.8.2Q-122_XT897_FFW-5 (No simlock) ?
If you are on stock, you should be able to update the PRL within the ROM.
I was trying to use it with cdma network through sprint. and yeah that was the file i downloaded, had to remove the getvar to get it working but flashed with no errors after doing that.
As for updating the prl i can barely navigate through the phone, there is no home page loading and the process pop comes up often enough that its hard to go through the settings

Sounds like something went wrong mate. Are you already activated on Sprint? I don't know if that would matter, it might.
I would honestly redownload and redo the RSD process.

I originally tried to activate the phone through cyanogen and then when the rep said he couldnt do it because of the lack of prl to update within the rom we just setup the activation back on the old phone/ That phone is working on the network.
I re-downloaded the file just in case and re-flashed but same problem. The only thing i thought of was maybe updating the radio but since its a stock rom it should work out of the gate. whats also weird is i tried turning wifi on but it didnt work either.
Anychange you know of a rom that works with sprint. I dont care if its stock since i would probably root later again.

Which one are you flashing?
Try another perhaps...? I honestly have never heard of this. It sounds like the phone might be damaged, or the RSD process just did not flash correctly.
I guess I should ask, was the phone modified at all for the GSM SIM slot mod? I wonder if having a non-Sprint SIM in is messing with it... That is just a shot in the dark.

so far the only rom i tried was 10.1 cyanogen and the stock rom for jellybean. However for the stock rom it doesnt let me downgrade to ics with rsd 6.1.5 do you think if i downloaded an old version i could downgrade to a lower stock rom?
Also I honestly had not looked for the cdma roms since most of what i saw was troubleshooting related for this phone but i just saw this rom -AOKP 4.2.2 (Android Open Kang Project) (CDMA&GSM) that you created - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293892
I re-rooted and installed that one and it looks great, just wondered how you got sprint to activate the phone or if you had done it before changing the rom? Also how would the prl and profile be updated.
Lastly the wifi wasn't turning on this time either, it did work initially when i got the phone so that has me stumped.

To downgrade to ICS, you need to remove some additional lines. See this post for more information on that.
However, you should be able to update the PRL on either stock ROM.
I think I said this before, but I will say it again. You need to do PRL updates, activate the phone, and get EVERYTHING working on stock BEFORE you flash ANY custom ROM. This is just standard practice - you don't want to put the cart before the horse! Get the phone working, then play with custom ROM's.

[Q] Why am I not consistently connecting to LTE

Hello, sorry if this has been asked before but my phone has been having trouble connecting to LTE for some reason. I'm assuming it has something to do with my radios or something along those lines. My friend is able to connect just fine and he is on the same rom as I and he also has the same phone.
If someone could point me in the right direction that would be awesome!
Thanks!

Did you flash the custom firmware with it too? If so that's likely the problem. Been hearing of a lot of radio issues from L gpe roms lately.
A factory reset in stock recovery (stock vzw recovery) usually fixes it.

The custom firmware seems to cause the issue worse than the 4.4.4 firmware. Most everyone seems to be having this issue but overlook. It also makes loading web pages really slow. Flashing the stock RUU and factory reset did not change anything, it seems the firmware is not right for Verizon phones.

That custom firmware should not be flashed to a vzw phone. I have no idea why he posted that firmware to be flashed. You can tell by the info.txt file that it was not.
The included wcnss was never intended to be used on a vzw phone for cdma/lte access.
Wireless connectivity networking subsystem.
OP, your best bet is to flash a stock Verizon RUU (this one works great and is for S-OFF devices), then once it is fully flashed, go into stock recovery and then do a factory reset (this is an important step, this is where you get your proper Verizon radio settings/files back!).
After that, you can go ahead and flash back to DH GPE without using custom firmware and you should be fully functional again with LTE.
And to repeat, you MUST do a factory reset from stock recovery, don't skip this step!

Yeah I think most who are using it are either lucky or do not care or notice the dropped, weak signals. I've tried everything more than once to get it working right and the results are always the same, it acts like it's the wrong firmware, cause it is lol. Some claim to have the same issues but ignore them. I need my phone to work no matter what ROM it is. Thanks for all your help bro I see you are willing to help us when in need, that is greatly appreciated. I hope users send donations your way, I sure will once i get ahead again.
Have you set your APP correctly.
So I just tried this and cannot get back into stock recovery to wipe data. Had to factory reset from hboot, that worked but not sure if it does the same thing as the one in stock recovery, please advise. Then tried to flash the stock recovery and it's still taking me to the darn red triangle with an exclamation point. I am going to continue and install LiquidSmooth 4.0 1-02 nightly after I flash custom recovery. I have searched but cannot find anything on our variant. Thank you all in advance.

When you get the red triangle, you press volume up and power to enter stock recovery. Keep practicing.
LTE drops on and off
I think I have the same issue as OP. However, I'll go further and note that I notice this on ALL AOSP roms as well as the GPe rom. It's not so much that the connection is bad, it looks good. But it drops on and off randomly. I followed the instructions here to factory reset the firmware using the 4.4.4 ruu. It definitely seems to be better but I still have this issue in DH's GPe (stock kernel). Any further ideas?

That signal drop off issue happens to me on gpe ROMs. So far all the cm12 ROMs out there have had a perfect signal with good speeds for me. I think the signal drop off issue is something to do with the gpe ROMs.
Currently running blisspop newest nightly with 4.4.4 straight from RUU.

Suddenly extremely poor reception

I'm having major issues with reception in my house, and only on my 16 GB OnePlus One. When switching to my Windows Lumia 635 or my HTC One X+, I get fine reception-- but as soon as my SIM's in my OnePlus One, I start receiving texts extremely late, which is a problem with apps like WhatsApp which require text verification.
I'm running stock ROM. That's CM 12.0-YNG1TAS17L. Stock kernel, unrooted even (ever since I flashed it back to stock to try and fix the reception issues). I've also tried OxygenOS, BlissPop, and Exodus and none of those have fixed my reception woes. Thanks in advance!

You ever get this fixed? I recently took a trip to San Diego and noticed the poor reception there.. a friend of mine, who's also on T-Mobile, has excellent reception with his new HTC One. I, on the other hand, had horrible reception; sometimes none at all. I've manually flashed the latest radio and still no dice.

Yeah-- here's what I did:
1. Flash stock ROM.
2. Update to latest stock ROM version via the CM updater.
3. Install TWRP again if needed.
4. Followed steps here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/help/fix-cm12-calls-sms-mms-deep-sleep-t3103193
I flashed both the modem and proximity packages after updating to latest stock, and I reflash every time there's a new stock update. Hopefully this works for you!

Wait, isn't the stock from still on 4.4 or something? How does that fix 5.0+ issues? Anyways, I'll give it a try, can't hurt, right? Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, stock is 4.4, but when you use the stock CM updater you'll be brought to CM12, 5.0.2. You don't have to stay on 4.4

(Though presumably you could just try flashing modem and prox packages without flashing back to stock-- I just wanted to be sure as possible that nothing would interfere with the packages.)

Flashed an old backup of stock, baseband stayed the same. Also, when I check for ROM updates, it says there are none. Currently on 4.4.4

That's really odd. You're on XNPH05Q? Or another one?
I used http://www.droidviews.com/restore-oneplus-one-stock/ to restore to stock instead of using a backup.

[q] need help with no service and no mobile network available

I have no service and no cellular network problem on my N5, running dark rom 7.1.2 aosp, with franco kernel ( never had issues before ), newest radio and bootloader. This started happening when i got my new sim card from my provider and i got 4g signal in my area for the first time. I tried manually selecting radio by going in the hidden menu by entering *#*#4636#*#* and i got lte and full bars signal after selecting band 8 ( 1800 hz ) but only for a minute then it went back to empty triangle. Tried selecting 3g only in preffered network, tried manually selecting provider, tried toggling airplane mode on/off a bunch of times nothing works. Any suggestion would be highly appreciated, i love my N5 very much and i would hate to throw it in a drawer somewhere. Thanks in advance
Flash back to a stock ROM and test it worth your new new.
Does the sim work in another phone?

Were you ever able to get this rectified? I have recently been having this problem as well. I have flashed back to ROMs I was previously using and flashed back to stock to no avail. My SIM card works in other devices as well. I really do not want to have to drop on a new phone, but I have tried every solution I have found online to no avail. I think it's fair to say that I am desperate right now.
edit: I found another thread on XDA that I'm looking into, I'll edit again if it works. I'm unsure how it took me so long to find that thread.
edit2: https://forum.xda-developers.com/go...getting-cdma-networks-to-nougat-roms-t3534679 is the thread that I found useful; I am now running Pure Nexus 7.1.2 with a full connection. Specifically, his second comment about installing 6.0.1 stock, backing up the efs, flashing the desired ROM, then restoring the efs is what ended up fixing it for me.

This morning it's not sticking with Pure Nexus, so I'll be trying DarkRom. I really don't want to use a CAF if I can avoid it, but it may become a necessity. Do people on T-Mobile have this problem?

So I've hit a point where I have 3G and nothing else. I can't yet get LTE to work. I'm using LineageOS CAF. How about yourself?

No luck with aosp by santosh m and pure nexus 7.1.2 , can't even get it to connect. I guess my last hope is caf based i will try lineageos caf. All i need is the efs backup from stock? If i can get it to work with 3g i will be satisfied because i did some digging and found out that my network provider which is Vip MK has no lte support for nexus 5 d820 ( my model ) only 3g, but i can't even connect with 3g selected. I guess because this one is for US frequencies it will not work whatever i try but i will give lineageos caf a chance.

I was able to get 3G only to work on my Nexus 5 by reflashing the EFS from 6.0.1; I'm trying right now to see if I can install PureNexus 6.0.1 then dirty flash to PureNexus 7.1.2 with any success. Also, I might just switch to T-Mobile, but I have to wait until later this week for that.
Hi,
LTE band 8 is not in 1800 MHz but first of all you can check your N5 model - US model is D820 and is not supported for LTE on 1800 MHz (band 3). For 1800 Mhz band you need D821 model.
Regards,

To clarify that:
You had the problem with not recognizing the sim or having no service at all. And you solved this by flashing the sstock 6.0.1 backing up the efs, flashing to Pure Nexus 7.1.2 and restoring the efs immediatley after flashing the rom (+kernel+root+etc)?
This solves this mysterious no sim/no service bug, which many (?) N5 owners experience? If this is true, I'd be really happy

It didn't stick. After I lost it I was unable to get it back. I gave up and switched to T-Mobile, where it is no longer a problem. Apologies for not having more testing information. I was able to get solely 3G on multiple instances, but getting the elusive 4G was beyond me.
I've had this problem before in two nexus, one of them running latest stock and the other a customized ROM. I tried to flash a stock ROM image in both of them with no luck. I was pretty sure that the image I was flashing was the latest, so the radio & bootloader should be flashed to the latest versions. But it didn't worked.
Finally I found on a XDA thread where someone was posting only the latest bootloader & radio to flash. I did it with NRT (in Advanced Utilities) and it worked:

I can't remember or find the thread, so I post the images here:
- Bootloader-hammerhead-hhz20h.img
- Radio-hammerhead-m8974a-2.0.50.2.30.img
I think I had to flash them twice because the first time it wasn't right, but there were 4 months since then and still no failure

Thanks for your input. I'll check that when I have some time. This is really weird as it looks like a hardware problem but if you can fix it with this method it's clearly a software issue...
best regards
