To all new Captivate owners...

Buy a case!
I was showing off how well my phone took Asphalt 5 and as I was unlocking the phone and about to slide to my second page of apps to show my friends a video I recorded, the super-slim Captivate slid out of my hands and onto the ground! I'm not a short guy at all so it fell about five feet onto bare concrete on its corner, bounced, and fell again on its side before landing face down.
So now I have beautiful cracks running through the glass on my Captivate. The touch sensing layer seems to be undamaged as is the display (and the rest of the phone? there were no scratches or dents anywhere except the screen..) which STILL managed to stay fingerprint and scratch free. Just too bad it didn't handle a drop too well.
I realize this is an extreme scenario but if you find your self fumbling with your phone because it's so thin (the last phone I had was a HTC Tilt2) you should really consider buying a case!
Thankfully I had insurance from AT&T and I got it from Costco so I have a 90-day exchange policy. I think i'll take the latter since it's free.
The moral of the story is that the Gorilla glass on the Captivate CAN be broken, so get a case if you're not confident about being able to keep the Captivate from hitting the ground!

Be careful. I understand that the body glove cases can cause superficial scratches to the exterior of the phone too.

Got a $3 black silicone case from Amazon. I love it.

Ebay has some that ship straight from Hong Kong that are molded perfectly for the phone and they throw in a screen protector also. I have a black silicon one but they sell all colors and it's a nice case. I may get one more for a spare but I think one will last pretty long. It even covers the side buttons but is molded to have them stand out from the case.

I second the recommendation for the Body Glove case. Bought mine online for $18. It's grippy, doesn't become sticky, keeps it shape, and allows me to easily remove it to change the battery when needed. After getting this case, I learned the Galaxy S face is made of Gorilla Glass. Upon seeing the wacky Korean video showing the level of abuse it can take, I pulled off the BodyGuardz film.

Bought one of these too, like the second day I had it. Also bought some screen protectors.
As far as the BG case causing scratches, There are some minor spots on the darker gray parts (like the one you slide to open the back) where it looks like the case has rubbed a bit onto it. Not that big of a deal for me. I'd rather have some minor scuffs on a part of the phone AI never see than some scratches/cracks on parts I always do.

I don't normally use cases as I bought the phone partly because it is slim and slides into the pocket without a lumpy feel. I carry keys a penknife and coins in my pockets as well so I cannot worry about body scratches. My phones are not "pretty" after a year. LOL But this guy is slippery and i have already dropped it a couple times with no ill effect. So I have decided to skin only the battery cover for a better grip.
I do use good screen protectors though (and a small over over the camera lens) to prevent scratches there.

I tried the Invisible Shield and BSE on mine, AT&T's screen protector on my wife's. Comparing both side by side mine had a yellow tint and looked ugly when looking at the same things on both screens. Distored somewhat by the orange peel look. I kept the body skin and put the AT&T screen protector on mine along with the body glove. Body glove fits great. Plus I found my finger sliding easier for swipe with the screen protector and not BSE or IS. Messed me up plenty.

I got one of those cases thats like the material between hard plastic and the soft silicone. I think its called a TPU skin case. Its awesome stuff. Got an all black one off ebay for $7 total and people cant even tell i have a case on the phone.
I know its good for drops too cause my friend dropped his htc incredible onto the ground with one of these cases on, the phone bounced a few times ended up on the screen, basically same thing that happened as OP, and it did NOTHING to the phone. He had a cheap $1 ebay screen protector on too. His phone is perfectly fine not even a scratch.
Highly recommend these cases over hard cases and silicone.

Good thing you have the insurance policy..other wise it would have been a expensive lesson for you. I didn't like any of the cases AT&T had when we got ours..so at my youngest sons urgings we headed over to Best Buy to find him (and us) a case. He had the Seido case for his i-pod and that thing is as rugged as a Timex watch. His Ipod was in good shape..but that case looks like it went through hell and back.He got one for his new 1-4 phone and the wife and myself got the one for the Captivate..I love how it protects but without all the bulk. It's not as well protected as in an Otter Box defender I had on my Hero..but I plan on being much more careful with this phone..

I had an AWFUL experience just the other day. I was walking to the kitchen with a glass of water and my phone in my hand and somehow I dropped the glass of water. I thought it was my phone so I went to fumble for it, just making a bigger mess and my phone got drenched. Bounced a couple times on the floor landed screen side up. I grabbed it so fast and stuck it in my shirt to dry, ripped the battery door off and dried it as fast as I could to make sure the litmus paper inside and battery didn't get wet. I'm definitely getting a good case now, and maybe I'll just vacuum seal my phone too for extra protection

That's SOOOO funny, because it sounds exactly like something I would do.

I was so used to putting my old phone in my flannel pocket.. with this phone if I do that it'll squirt out faster than a greased pig.
Def need to get a case for this thing.

I got a Zagg screen protector at bestbuy and they put it on using a squeegie. You can barely tell it's there
For a case (at least for the first few months) I got a slide on hard shell. It has a cell phone holster which I got rid of and then it's not that much more bulky. It seems much more sturdy with it. I did the same thing with my iPhone 3g. It didn't add a ton of extra bulk and in the case of my iPhone it made it last until I was ready for my upgrade (to this sweet machine).

I recommend a hard shell

Gorilla glass is scratch resistant, not crack resistant, there's big difference you know...

Guess this phone doesn't take asphalt too well after all. In all seriousness though, I dropped mine face down from shoulder height (I'm over 6' ) onto a sidewalk about 2 weeks after I got it (don't drink and text), and with the body glove case and the at&t screen protectors it turned out none the worse for wear (the screen protector was trashed though, grit embedded in it). I haven't noticed any scratching of my phone from the case, either. Highly recommend it.

But I had the same thing happen on my iTouch. Dropped it in the street (with a case!) and the only damage was to the screen protector. Which I promptly took off and replaced when I got home.

Hey, pretty much first topic in here.
I need a good screen protector, since the one that came with the otterbox commuter case I bought is
1 slightly too small
2 when I tried to apply it either the top or bottom wouldn't fit nicely. That is if I applied it aligned to the top of the screen, it wouldn't stick there and vice verse for the bottom.
My criteria basically are (and I know there most likely is no perfect product)
Should fit the entire screen, or at least be "invisible" enough that you don't notice them at first glance.
Somewhat scratch-proof, oleophobic would be a nice cherry on top.
Should feel more or less like the unprotected screen, as in glide easily, no stickiness.
also ofc should work just like the screen, with no input problems or anything.
Anyone know any screenprotectors that fulfill some or all of these criteria? are the cheap ebay ones any good?

The Xtreme GUARD screen protector for Ihone 4 was brilliant.

I use Martin Fields and think it's the best screen protector I've used "so far". My previous screen protectors include ZAGG, some random ebay ones and the ones come with case-mate and otterbox cases.
Installation is super easy (compared to the pain and wait of ZAGG's) as well!

I prefer the original htc screen protectors. Cheap ,good quality.

I like the vikuiti screen protectors, I got a three pack for my HD2 and after I messed up the first with air bubbles the second lasted a whole 10 months and didn't need replacing, the screen still looked liked new. Comparing to the htc it lasted 2 weeks and was full of scratches and finger marks, so Ill be getting the vikuiti for the dhd.

I think your best bet is the HTC's generic protector. It's a perfect cut (mind the gaps between the screen and the plastic "lip"), mine is since early November and it's without scratches. For oleophobic part... some say it gets greasy very easyly, but it's either they have extereamly greasy fingers, or mine are extreamly dry . The protector is made of somewhat hard plastic, so it feels more or less like the unprotected screen. No orange skin effect or the grippy feeling of Invisible Shield. And I didn't notice any reduction or inacuracy in sensitivity of the screen. Maybe slightly less sensitive since before I had mine on, I could "touch" the screen without actually touching it and now it works the way it's supposed to .
Also there is one big advantage of this one - the thickness of the protector is equal to the height of the "lip" around the screen, so with the protector applied you no longer will get your finger "gripped" when you slide them off the screen.
The only downside (IMO) is that HTC made a production design error with the cutting of the protector. There are always two small bubbles in the top left corner where the foil protecting the sticky side is grabbed to be removed prior to the installation.

Yeah just make sure every microscopic bit of dust is off. I've actually found using a small amount of sunglass lense cleaner on the screen and wiping it off with a microfibre cloth does the trick.

I don't feel it's necessary to pay more than just a few dollars for a good quality screen protector. Over the years I've found the Hh ScreenGuard brand of screen protectors in the yellow packaging on dealextreme.com to be of very good quality. They are thin and flexible which means so long as you put them on with no dust or finger prints they last forever and they stick down with no bubbles and look near invisible. They are usually around 2 bucks. At the present time however dealextreme had no listings for that brand for the Desire HD.
I've had these bad crappy generic ones both from ebay and from dealextreme.com for different phone models (including desire HD). They always come in no packaging/branding and with the same blue on one side red on the other side tabs. They are thicker, less flexible and are next to impossible to get on without bubbling and start to peel off before long. Here's what I'm talking about... The ads often look like this:

Now recently I've found this brand (CALANS) to be of descent quality. In fact since I first put mine upside down first time and then kept washing it and reapllying it with dust underneath it I ended up washing it and re-applying it no less than half a dozen times and when I was finally happy with it there was still no damage or bubbles from this screen protector! Since getting my replacement Desire HD I put on a new one of these protectors and got it first time perfect with no bubbles. The protector came with a case but I asked the ebay seller to sell me more separately so he made a new listing. They are $1 each and free shipping. Here's some tips I've leant for putting on the screen protectors: First thing is throw away usless cloth that looks like this:
That tiny unhemmed cloth will only fray at the edges and leave lint on your screen as you wipe. You are better off using your cotton t-shirt and breath or a slightly damp soft cotton or microfibre, lint free cloth. Make sure before you remove any of the outside layers you first place the protector over the screen to see how it fits. there are always some gaps and in the case of the Desire HD one way is up, one way is down as there are smaller corners at the top of the screen and bigger ones at the bottom. Place phone on a towl or cloth to keep stable and not damage camera. When you are totally sure you have the screen clean and no dust then peel only a small section of the 1st layer back. Start sticking down protector and pushing out air bubbles as you peel away more of the 1st layer. Once it's all down with no bubbles and the 1st layer is off take of the 2nd layer. If you find there is dust or you messed it up use the corner of a protective layer to carefully wedge under the protector (without damaging the screen protector) and lift up the protector. Remove the protector, clean screen and wash protector with soapy water and rinse. Shake protector. Place protector on screen while still slightly wet pushing out as much air and water as possible. Usually there will be water bubbles under the screen that will gradually dry up over 1.5 to 2 days with this method and in the end leave a flawless finish with no bubbles. I have used my phone during the drying process with no problems.
**Keep in mind phones these days often have a water sensor (a piece of paper that changes colour to moisture). If something goes wrong using the water method and you get the inside of your phone wet this could easily void your warranty**

i hate screenprotectors...too much oil, air bubbles, scratches, rough screens and other stuff......
i heard gorilla glass doesnt require screenprotectors unless u drop the phone alot.? Is that true...can i just remove this annoying protector off...

Yes it is true you do not require screen protector if your phone has a Gorilla Glass display.It is more strong, hard and Scratch proof than a normal phone glass display. So you can stick out your screen protector

But if you want to sell your phone one day , it is better to use a protector with it . Because nothings perfect.

I've had and atrix for a while and dropped it from a considerable height facedown onto hardwood, completely shattering the screen. While waiting for my replacement to be shipped to me, I thought I'd do some testing on the scratch resistance of Gorilla Glass. Scraping keys, nails, and other various objects across the screen caused no damage whatsoever to the surface of the glass. Make a long story short, the screen protectors are a scam in my opinion.

screen protectors can actually help from having your digitizer shatter when dropperd, for it spreads the shockwaves out pretty nicely.

I've got a Galaxy SII (I777) and have had it for about 6 months or so.
It's got Gorilla glass and although I can't say I've been stupid enough to purposefully put a key to my phone or TRY to scratch it with my nails or anything like that, I can say that I literally have no REAL scratches on the screen. There are a few microscratches, and when I say a few that means less than 20 (and I literally have to put a light right up against the phone in order to see them.
I've had my phone without a screen protector for about 5 out of those 6 months. A case covering it (Case-Mate Barely There) and had the phone in my pocket (not against keys) and on the desk, bed, - dropped it a couple times, can't say I dropped it on the screeen; if so I didn't see any marks) for about 2 months, and in a case for the rest. Currently using a screen protector ONLY BECAUSE, I realized after about 3 months or so that the oleophobic coating on the screen was starting to wear off cus I was getting more smudges, and more finger prints, and it was harder to clean.
Tried a Matte screen protector despite all the warnings (really wanted no finger prints but after about 2 weeks decided it was a piece of **** for dimming the colors so much that I got a crystal clear instead - btw SGP is great) and am happy with it atm. I could go bare screen instead of having the crystal clear on but I'd rather have it cus it's a little nicer to use than the screen after the oleo has worn off. My $0.2, since I've been through the situation myself a few months ago. Hope you make good decisions, best of luck to ya.

You can get away with skipping a screen protector if your device has gorilla glass, as it'll be far more resistant to scratches, etc than normal glass would be.
I wouldn't say it's impossible though.. I myself use screen protectors even with gorilla glass, just for events you can't predict, more or less for peace of mind.

I'd definitely recommend one if your not planning on using a case. gorilla glass hardly ever scratches but why take the risk if you can find a decent screen protector?

Some things seem like a good idea, and with a screen protector, it definitely would not hurt...
but I have never used a screen protector on my iconia a500 or my ZTE x500 phone. I have long fingernails, my phone gets tossed into my purse with all sorts of other things...never a scratch.
So maybe screen protectors are like wearing suspenders AND a belt...just to be safe. I just think they are a pain to put on well and a waste of money.

My 2 week old HTC One X with Gorilla glass now has a nice tactile scratch in the middle of the screen from my wife stacking it with her BlackBerry Bold on top of it in the car's cup holder. So yes, I'm going to buy a screen protector now.

Yeah, I choose to use one. I don't have a gorilla glass phone (Evo 4g), but I have noticed on several phones that even my thumbprints eventually make micro scratches. I just got my mom a Gnex for mothers day, and I think it has gorilla glass, but first thing I did was put a screen protector on it. Cuz, once you notice scratches, there's no undo button.
Also, good example, the day I unboxed my moms gnex, she was standing there with me. We were in kitchen. Gnex was on kitchen counter. She was holding a copper .75" plumbing pipe that had just broken at her house. The end of it was twisted and shredded and sharp. While she was rotating it showing me something on it, the sharp, jagged end was grinding across the screen of her phone that was just delivered and not even activated yet. I saw it happening and turned white as I shoved the pipe end away from screen. Then she turned white. You could see deep scratches.
The OEM plastic screen protector that the phone ships with was still on the screen. I peeled it back, terrified that scratches went all the way thru.
Nope. Clean glass. Screen protector saved ass. :thumbup:

Gorilla Glass
I've had my Galazy S2 since October 2011 and installed a screen protector on it even before I knew it had Gorilla Glass so I can't make any comparison, but I'm sure it looks like new if I were to remove it. Just a newbies 2 cents worth.

I don't see what the fuss is, I have screen protected all my phones and i can't tell the difference with it on or off.... Its just one of those small things that cost nothing and will give you peace of mind. I always use the clear ones and if they do happen to get scratched or rough then just replace it. They are worth pennies.

Mi mix screen protector

Hello guys
I'm looking for screen protector that fit the mix , but I'm not able to find one as most of the screen protector I purchase didn't fit right and have air around the side and corner

I agree 100%. The screen protector from Gearbest is by far the best one ive found, and have been will to try. There are a lot on ebay, but you have to wait quite some time for them to arrive, and I for one am not willing to wait. I also get the same rainbow affect on my screen protector, but its not enough to make me return it.

I can vouch for the quality of it. Ordered 5 because I have bad luck with getting these things on. No rainbow Halo, no touch issues, and good clarity. Only problem is that it's a fingerprint magnet but I can live with that. Maybe I should apply oleophobic coating...

Ordered two of these, exactly the ones that are linked above. Newtonrings (oil effect), fingerprints are like a gray topping, protector to small. If you place it exactly at top of the screen the message led is covered half. Sorry guys, you've ordered crap. Ah, a dot pattern these have too. Like all others i've tried.

Perfect adhessiveness and sturdy looking (not planning on actually testing shock or scratch real protection).
It does NOT, by far, cover the whole screen though. I read around that is normal and something very difficult to come around with edge-curved screens, and big ones to boot, and also especially difficult to find high-quality ones like spigen and zagg as they do not manufacture for these brands...
Anyone with a full-coverage working screen protector that doesn't suck?

I got a screen protector from Aliexpress (WEIYU Full Coverage Tempered Glass Screen Protector Ultra Thin Explosion Proof 9H Safety Protective Film For Xiaomi Mi Mix 6.4)
and it was the worst piece garbage I ever purchased.
It was a terrible product, probably the worst screen protector I have ever purchased. I'm sure it's not the sellers fault, he's just reselling the item but this product is terrible. Once it's firmly placed on the device you are left with what looks like a ring of rainbow colors in the middle of the screen when light hits the display, I did some research online and it's because the screen protector only sticks around the edges, not throughout the whole display meaning no adhesive in the middle. Also this is not tampered glass, so if this thing breaks (which it did when I decided to take it off because It bothered me so much, luckily nothing happened to my display) it's very dangerous with shreds of glass everywhere.
I don't recommend anyone buying this thing, I don't understand how a company like Xiaomi doesn't release official accessories for the Mi Mix, they freaking make vacuum cleaners and all types of redundant bs but they can't properly make a decent screen protector or a nice official leather flip cover?

I tried like 4 different ones and in the end opted for going screen naked. All of them sucked one way or the other and the smooth feeling of the screen was always replaced with plastic sticky **** feeling. I try to be careful and well, I got a couple of scratches already but man, such is life. Prefer it at not seeing or touching the real screen

I know the feeling, I can already see tiny micro scratches on the screen when light hits it, it's impossible to find a decent screen protector for this thing. Xiaomi must've used a the cheapest quality glass for the front panel, I haven't had this phone that long to get so many little micro scratches and like you I baby this thing.

Yep. That's the dilemma I guess. A pity glass cover is not more resistant. I see less scratches in my 4 year old Nexus 5 :crying::silly:

Is there a wet applied screen protector of the right dimensions. Usually I have better luck than glass or regular film, plus no bubbles or other effects (but I always buy more than one also).

Have you tried it yourself? Does it cover the full screen in any way or leaves the curved edges out?

Whitestone Dome Review

So, I finally got around to installing my Whitestone Dome tempered glass screen protector.
Initial thoughts...
-The kit is overwhelming when you first open it. Don't be tempted to try and identify every little piece in it. The packaging design is genius, and waste is at an absolute minimum.
-They scienced the **** out of this. The alignment is perfect. Not askew in the slightest.
-It is NOT full-coverage. I'm admittedly disappointed in this aspect. It covers the responsive part of the display, but it does not go edge-to-edge. This gives it a tangible learning curve in terms of hand and finger placement during use.
-If you follow the instructions to the letter, and don't try and cut corners, it will go smoothly.
-There will be a mess to cleanup. Price of admission.
-You never knew you could see dust so small in size, and the OCD in you will not let you even begin until you clear every last speck.
I hope this might help someone on the fence, or at least entertain mildly.

If it were edge to edge, you wouldn't be able to put it in a case without it lifting and essentially depositing the 60 bucks or whatever that 50 cent piece of tempered glass costs for the Note 9 in the trash.

Yeah. The S9+ Whitestone was more 'edge-to-edge' than the one for the Note 9. I don't mind. The S9+'s WSD was somewhat a pain with some cases so I appreciate the not quite edge-to-edge fit of the Note 9 WSD.

True. I hadn't thought about that aspect since I don't use cases anymore. I've got a skin on the back for the sake of scratches, and this is my first tempered glass screen protector. I like that it feels just like the naked glass, even if the actual coverage will take some getting used to. [emoji106]

Yeah, it's definitely less noticeable when it's in a case. They should make an edge to edge and case friendly version.

I had an install issue where it looks like a small plastic cutout was left on the screen edge. Not sure how this happened because my screen was clean and I removed the backing and put it down quickly. I noticed the issue during the glue portion and couldn't get the glue to cover the area =/

The ocean blue is really growing on me. I thought it would be a lot more of a lighter blue. Im stilling waiting on my 512 ocean blue to ship but once the midnight black release ill be jumping on that right away.
Do you have any pics of your dbrand skin?

So I bit the bullet and tried this...first time with the dome glass....and I loved it! Installation is a PITA but it went perfectly and the glass was amazing...until I dropped the phone today and it shattered! (sigh)
$45 and it lasted 3 days, UGH! Of course, better to break the protector than the screen itself.

What's stopping dust particles settling on the phone when the glue is poured on to the screen?

Well, I guess nothing will stop the determined mote of dust from spoiling the application. I used this product on three S8s (and have it on order for my Note 9), and I did have an pesky bit of black schmutz under the glass. But it was only noticeable when the background was white (which is, like, almost always). I was sloppy, and not taking my time, and didn't really clean my work area as I should have. But the set up came with two vials of adhesive, and I was able to remove the glass and re-apply. The adhesive is more like cured rubber cement than a sticky glue.

In general, nothing. When you're doing the install and get to this point, I'd suggest taking a second to hit the screen with another pass of the dust tape, then resting the glass protector on the speaker pin as you let it spread towards the center (which then acts as a bit of a dust shield).

I would think if you're lucky and don't push down on the glass, as you're not supposed to, that most dust will push out to the sides as the adhesive spreads. Just a thought.

Does anyone else have any sticky residue coming from the sides when you rub the edges? Quite annoying, granted it might be a bit my fault as I immediately picked up the phone after all the glue adhered to the screen and then it started to slide up and down. I should have just let it sit and used the UV light to cure it in place. But wanting to know if anyone else who did it perfectly is getting glue residue along the edges.

Once the screen has cured you should be able to use alcohol to clear out any glue from the edges. I had a Dome on my Note 8, flawless install, the phone literally slid off my lap about 12 inches onto my car console and there was a crack through the length of the Dome glass. It looks beautiful, works great, but it's as hard as a potato chip. There is no way the phone screen would have cracked from that. These types of cracks happen a lot with the WSD protectors.

It was my first time with the WSD as well.
One issue I had was during lifting the top jig frame after laying the glass and curing it for 15secs. The top part of the frame was tight against the glass. So when I tried to lift the frame out, it lifted the glass as well!!
Then I decided to use my fingers to press down the glass before lifting the frame.
Yes,, I had lots of tiny bubbles on the top left. Luckily, after 2 days, almost all bubbles disappeared. Phew!
As for those afraid of dust, make sure you install in a clean environment with no source of wind. I did it after closing my windows, ceiling fan and also breathed softly. And don't forget to use the stickers to lift up the dust EVEN if you don't see any!
