Hi all Oneplus One owners. Just received mine (on Friday) and spent yesterday getting everything transferred from my crappy (crappy because it was bought 2nd hand off ebay, and a T-Mobile blacklisted IMEI meaning I couldn't use it in the USA) S4. Also followed Chromium's rooting guide (excellent).
However, I've done a quick search for my question, and will be continuing to search after posting.
1st. There are some big screen phones (phablets?) where the manufacturer has made the keyboard in portrait mode smaller than the width of the screen.
Question: Can the default OPO keyboard be shrunk and locked to one side of the screen? If yes, what is the setting? (I've looked and nothing jumps out at me.)
If the default keyboard cannot be shrunk, are there any on Google Play store, and if so, which ones are recommended?
My thumb will be most pleased if I can get a smaller sized keyboard as I do a lot of input one-handed.
While I wait for possible answers, I'm going back to my searching.
Thanks

Search for Hackers Keyboard. It's free, re-sizable (you can choose 4 or 5 rows in both landscape and portrait mode) loads of options and battery friendly.

Hmm... I used to used Hackers Keyboard on my LG G2x, but as that had a 4" screen, size wasn't an issue. I'll have to install it and (re-)try it.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Suck up and get used to it. In a weeks time it'll seem natural.

Re-looked at Hackers Keyboard. No go. Can increase the height of the keyboard by activating the number row (the 5th row). However, cannot decrease the width.
Looked at Swiftkey,. and TouchPal - Free Emoji Keyboard. Both offer the feature of being made smaller in width, and moved to either the left (good for me as I use my left hand to hold the phone and therefore type with my left thumb!) or the right.
Swiftkey has one very nice extra feature (advantage? Don't know yet) where the keyboard can be un-docked from the screen base, and floated anywhere on the screen.
TouchPal seems to be a good keyboard if you are also interested in Asian writing - e.g. Chinese, etc. as it offers (for Chinese at least) a handwriting pad instead of the keys.
Both have numerous themes for personalization. And more features waiting to be discovered.
All OTHER keyboards in Google Play store did not appear to have the ability to be made smaller than the screen width (none of the descriptions described this feature).
So, for me, case closed. I have two keyboards to practice with, and to determine which one I like.
Question for other readers; Are you happy with the default keyboard, or have you changed to a 3rd party keyboard? If so, which one?
Stock keyboard is fine. I've used Swiftkey before but got rid. Seemed sluggish on my M7 and doesn't seem any better on the OPO

When was the last time you tried it?
I bought it years ago and also got pissed by its sluggishness. But, after skipping many promised updates fixing it's performance, I installed it a couple weeks ago on my s4 and it's running really smooth.
Didn't try many keyboards apps, but SwiftKey is definitely one of the best (can't tell for future releases if they turn it laggy again).

I'd say probably about a month ago. It wasn't bad but coming from the stock HTC and Google Keyboard, I could feel the difference

Some of the features:
*Change key size.
*Keyboard height and width.
*Keyboard padding (docking the keyboard to one side of the screen).
*Add additional rows.
One of the highly customisable keyboards out there, the only downside I can think of is the auto-correct. Not as good as some others I've tried.
The feature you want is a premium one. The premium would set you back about $3. However, Kii allows you to test premium features for 1 hour before automatically resetting.

Luckily is a magnetic keyboard, which means I can still carry without it.
Noticed that the Internet browser button is no longer there? ALso, no joyce stick, ok button, and window buttons.
Yeh... dedicated row of number keys!
2 extra keys per row. This will be challenging to use. No keys for the corresponding soft keys. No more special keys for phones. Looks like a keyboard meant for input only, which is probably a good use of the keyboard space. I'm disappointed that lettter Z is still one character too right. Z should have been directly below the letter A, as is the case with standard keyboard. Should have made the left shift smaller and shift the whole row left by one key.
But the biggest questions are, any vibrating motor (sincere there is no more microdrive) and embedded earpiece?
Anyone care to comment on the google maps, tomtom included, and the video performance relative to the x7500/7501??
I think it looks tasty! The keyboard still looks useless...
I quite like the newer look, pity that there's no okay button I tend to use that quite a lot.
as the camera button is now on the front I wonder what the one on the top right is? seems daft to duplicate it.
Wonder if it would be possible to get the new athena keybaord to the old athena.

I think that's the voice recorder/com manager. They just shift it to the top.
I also use the ok button quite a bit to minimise application. For example, after a phone call, I press ok to hide it.
Looks nice - but evolution rather than revolution, I want one. Just not enough to make me fork out what it will cost.
How am I supposed to control my music player without the joystick and action button? Now I use it to volume up, volume down, next song, previous song, and off the screen. I also use OK button to bring up the playlist, and browser button to pause/play. With these buttons all gone now, playing music without switching on the screen would be a problem.
So much for the next version being the Next Big Thing. Loosing the joystick and half of the programmable buttons was a bad choice. No mention of vibrate, or gaining a private earpiece, either. No wider+narrow screen and form factor to make it more phone-like with more screen space. That membrane keyboard is going to suck, too. Anyone remember the Atari 400? There's a reason the Atari 800 was much more popular and so many aftermarket keyboards came out for the 400...
Next.
The new full keyboard looks like an improvement. Typing text with numbers or special character is now a nightmare on the advantage.
On the other hand, it looks like the little transparent strip at the back of the keyboard is now solid black. I kinda enjoy the fact that I can see who calls me with the keyboard attached.
Looks like the cut a lot of features from th Advantage where I don't even see what the point could be of losing them. How much space is that going to bring them and why would they need to save space on a device that's basically the same with only a bit of extra flash memory?

On a product like this, Velcro
And on a serious note, I'm loving the look, although I don't know how well it will work without the OK button, its a useful app switcher on the current generation. I could probably live without the joypad. Its a bit rubbish they've decided to drop the infobar thing (I'm assuming so given the 100% opaque keyboard) which is quite nice when your not using it in a case. I do like the look of the keyboard, might be more usable that the current one maybe.
Where are all the buttons? WTF?
We need more hardware buttons not less, and the joystick too Helloooo HTC WTF?
I would have considered it with the 16GB drive, but there is no chance now without buttons, I wanted a dedicated Answer/End buttons, I had the OK/Win buttons remapped as well as every other button with AE Buttons, this gave me Dedicated Answer/End plus Opera or IE and Flashlight all from a quick hardware button press.
I assume they are trying to to everything from TouchFlo instead.
I still would have liked vibrate and a dedicated ear speaker, for when my bluetooth headset is dead.
And the info display, I cant believe that they couldnt fix the damn reed magnet switch so it worked as advertised.
Well, still waiting for the next big thing

Anything, but, certainly not magnets(!). Why not permantely attach the keyboard or completly do away with it?
I find the Joystick to be most used button on the X7501. I rarely use the device in landscape mode when surfing my favorite blogs. I hold down the joystick to get past all the links on the home pages to get to the current messages. Also use it extensively to page forward in ebooks.

Here's the official press release: http://www.htc.com/press_room/03-press-080211_01.htm
Interesting that they only mention one camera in this release, yet the pictures show the camera facing the user. So... did the original 3 mp camera get chucked, along with the bright LED? Do you now need to turn the thing around to take a picture?
Other questions: Do the external GPS & cell antenna ports still exist? Does the new camera button (the old browser button) have two positions so you can focus first and then take the pic? What accessories will be included in the box this time (and will it include a belt-ready pouch)?
I think they really missed the boat on this one.
what about the backlight? does this keyboard get light on night?
On this danish site there is a bit more info about the new keyboard, which I don't see here:
http://qtek-user.dk/models.php?id=88 (very slow loading!)
It has what is called "haptic feedback", and it delievers a small vibration when you activate a key, which in my opinion must be an improvement to the old style. Also the numeric keys look great, but the lack of the various hardkeys is strange and probably inconvenient.
And here are the specs:
http://tele-online.dk/product.asp?product=16784&sub=67
Someone asked about GPS and Camera, according to this there are no changes, so both are present.
Found on The Register:
Very cunning idea: "each triangular key has significantly more dead space around it than you’d find on a standard Qwerty layout. Consequently, users are more likely to press the correct key each time they tap."

Essentially the keyboard takes up the same amount of space, but it's easier not to fat-finger more than one key at a time. I would love to see this for touchscreen-only Android phones. It's patented, sadly (and destined for the iPhone), which begs the question: how hard would this be to implement on the sly? Essentially you're just re-skinning the keyboard, after all.
If you were just reskinning the keyboard then the touchable area would be the same and you would still fat-finger touch the other keys. You would also have to make the touch area different.

Hell, it might even be worth keeping the visual layout the same and just changing the touchable area; I was thinking of "reskinning" as both, largely because I've seen three different keyboards for the magic so far in different ROMs, at least two of which have different touchable areas due to having different keys.
Personally I just wished that the keyboard looked and behaved the same as the iPhone... In the Google firmware, the buttons are too small and responds differently, mostly it doesn't even recognize me pressing the keys...don't know if it is because it lacks multitouch or something..

Hi there,
Its good to get some feedback on my keyboard, some reports give the idea that I only want to get it put onto the iphone, but in reality, I want to get it used as the default keyboard on every touch screen phone.
The website at www.crocodilekeyboards.com was set up because it is almost impossible to show big companies new ideas as they all seem to hide behind the unsolicited ideas rulebook.
You would think that they would actively encorage inventors with a half decent idea by setting up a simple contact point for evaluation purposes.
I had to go public with the idea just to get it in front of them.
The UK patent covers not just the shape of the keys but also the area around them, it also covers variations of the triangular shape.
There seems to be a real need for this keyboard, everyone seems to hate predictive text and touch screens are definately the way forward.
so are you gonna release it for android any time soon?

Good luck! I look forward to trying it out and seeing how it works in practice. It would be nice to be able to move my fat digits a little faster on the screen!
It doesn't matter what the picture of the keyboard looks like. If you don't actually make the space/key bigger, then it won't make any difference. Applephone keyboard is a little easier because the screen is A LITTLE BIGGER.... physically. It has a larger screen. Thats what makes it easier.
Crocodile Keyboard
The actual size of the button is less important than you think.
There is a neat optical effect with the croc board were you see the triangular space around the key which makes it look much bigger, this then gives you a visual clue where the button is as you place your finger over it.
Many people have less than perfect vision and anything that helps determine the button position should help.
As an experiment, put your standard qwerty keyboard on a photocopier and print out a copy. (The full keyboard on my website, www.crocodilekeyboards.com, has a croc version of Apple's aluminium blutooth keyboard)
Then, using a felt tip pen change half the keys on the first few rows to croc keys and compare to the standard keyboard. You will see that you could reduce this on your copier by at least 40% and still easily use the croc keys but start to struggle with the standard ones.
Crocodile Keyboard
I have a question.
Crocodile Keyboards have decided that thier first app will be for the Android powered touch screen phones but have noticed something a bit sneaky in the Android developers agreement.
If you go to:
http://www.android.com/us/developer-distribution-agreement.html
Now look at the last bit of 5.1, "Market and to use the Products to make improvements to the Android platform".
Does this mean that I am about to spend five weeks developing this app and Google can just decide to use it in Android for nothing?
Please somebody tell me I am wrong, I am still waiting for a response from google about this.
From reading it would say that it means they I.E. google can use it for administration and demo.
I'm no legal eagle but i would take it from that they can NOT just steal your idea....... and tbh i dont think it matters what it says i dont think a court would uphold that.
I have seen this keyboard before and the patent is rubbish under prior art.
http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/gallery/artoftrek/klingon-console-st5.jpg
RIM are trying other similar patents with hardware keyboards and three letters on a triangle key. For me this is a vile abuse of the patent system. To change the shape of a key and claim its a new idea is a pile of nonsense. Maybe I will invent and patent the parallelogram keyboard which is very like a triangle.
Krocodile Keyboard
Well untill Google get back to me saying anything different, then this distribution agreement is a contract to which I would be agreeing with. The courts will not agree to disolve an unfair contract just because one of the parties involved couldnt be bothered reading what they were signing.
I have just been speaking to my solicitor and his view is that they would be entitled under the contract to take my app off the store and use it in Android.
Come on Google, what is this?
I'd be more than happy to test it, outside of the market
I doubt google will be getting back to you. Though maybe the Klingons will be visting their solicitors or just come to blast you.
I bought it today, much better, I think. I was looking for an interface to change colors...is that possible? thanks, Cyn

You guys remember the days of touch pro2, now that was an awesome keyboard phone. But, now with the age of slim being the new trend. Would we see more phones that resemble the keyboard of the touch pro2. So, let's begin the discussion on what you think the future of keyboard phone is. I wish htc goes back to those key features which made it so great....
sorry, if there is another thread like this....
They might disappear eventually, but I think some heavy texters still prefer physical keyboards. With Swype I can almost meet the speed of a physical keyboard, but it's not quite the same. Optional bluetooth keyboards that attach in some way might start to become more prevalent, though.

It seems like its only a matter of time before software keyboards get better - there just isn't space to put a physical keyboard on a phone. the swype system seems to be the best currently but anyone might dream up newer and better ways. speech recognition is also getting better all the time.
Tactile screens will probably bring about the real end to physical keyboards as they're the only way to really replace them. It'd be the best of both worlds as well. Imagine a physical keyboard that's context sensitive!
I don't see them dying completely. I know a lot of people crying when Blackberry is brought up, but there are still quite a few people over there that won't give up on a physical kb.
I have even contemplated it myself with a 9900. If not for the bricking issue....it really is an amazing phone, IMO.

yeah, but those keyboards are nothing compared to the keyboard on touchpro2...
Touch screens are annoying sometimes, on keyboard phones you always hit right button, anyway I prefer touch screens (dictionary is very helpful while typing). Today I had a chance to play with speech recognition on iPhone and its preaty cool...Someone should start doing research on mind keyboards, just think instead of typing
I agree that there is still a market for keyboards, but with phones becoming thinner, there's really no way to have a real keyboard anymore. I'm personally all for touchscreen digital keyboards, but I understand some people don't like change.
The strongest point against physical kb is the space issue. Period. It is literally a waste of space. I was on bb for a good while and swore I'd never leave, so loved the keys blah blah blah. Swiftkeyx made me just as fast, and the tech, as everyone has mentioned, is only getting better

I love my Epic because of the keyboard. For long emails and typing in terminal mode where I have to type a lot of symbols and and numbers, you can't beat a physical keyboard (don't have to keep hitting the symbol key and alphabet key just to switch between symbols, numbers, and letters). Also, while playing emulator games like Street Fighter II, I can use my Game Gripper and it feels just like a controller. Also having that extra half screen of visual real estate while typing does help as well.

I have a favorite launcher I have used for years and would like to continue doing so when I get my Z Flip 2. Does anyone have any information what what can be expected when trying to use a launcher other than UI Samsung provides? For those interested, the launcher I've used since 2017 is Action Launcher (and of course I do have others, but I always return to AL).
I sent Lacy an email on this; they usually respond quickly. I tried searching the OG subsection without hitting paydirt.
Yes Lacy does usually get right back. I also sent the question to him. I may have to just wait and try it myself.
I can't imagine it'll be an issue. The only issue would be when you try to use a third party launcher with native gestures - it works, but it's buggy. OneUI 2.5 promised a fix, but that wasn't the case.
Most work but don't support two screen layouts yet, that much can be gleaned from the OG subsection. Launcher aficionados will of course want two different setups so both screens can be maximised.
I saw a reddit post of someone using Tasker and some event loop, to have the default launcher in the external small screen and Nova Launcher in the Tablet one for the original Fold. Can't expect that though to be the best choice. I think at least in the first few months we'd have to stick to the default...
Seems like the plan will be to try and see if it works. Stock is always the default, however, default is (seldom?) the best choice, especially when one knows the many options there are for custom.
My money is on them making it happen. I worked with them when gestures first came out which at first conflicted with the drawer pull out from the bottom (this was pre official google gestures) and they fixed it in a matter of days. This of course might take more time but they are very reactive to making these things happen. Folding devices are not going away and they butter their bread by selling that launcher, it's not a side job. I'm fairly confident it will be coming and in the near term rather than further out.
Do you think Lawnchair will work ok?
Give them time to get hands on and sure most mainstream ones will work.
I sent this to Lacy as well, but there has not been a response yet. I am sure he needs to hake a good look first.
He is always great with replies.
Q: Foldables (Z Fold2) Support?
Vagelis
Sun, Sep 13, 4:36 PM (2 days ago)
to support
Greetings Chris,
I am a long time user and supporter of AL.
As I am switching to a Galaxy Z Fold 2, I am curious as to whether you would consider supporting the dual screen layout that the Fold 2 has.
The stock launcher has different layouts for each screen, which allows customization of the different usage scenarios each screen offers.
There also appears to be API documentation from Google and Samsung to support this.
https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/foldables
https://developer.samsung.com/sdp/b...how-to-update-your-apps-for-foldable-displays
https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy-z/ux-and-ui-considerations.html
I know that technically we can use AL with the same layout for both screens, but the dpi changes make the single layout for both screens not optimal for neither.
This might be a good opportunity for AL to acquire some new users; others in the field have an interesting response:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyFold...thinks_galaxy_fold_and_foldables_in/?sort=old
I would love to continue using AL with the Fold, but for now I guess I'd have to downgrade my user experience. No Covers, no Shutters... it makes me shudder (wink, wink).
What are your thoughts please?
Thank you for your consideration.
Stay safe and healthy.
I am in the same boat, my Z Fold 2 comes today. I've been using Action Launcher for years as my favorite launcher. Nothing else compares. I hope support will be added and I'm happy to lend a hand if I can.
I have not heard from Chris yet. I am sure it will take some time to figure this out. If I were to base progress on the availability of cases, I'd say, patience grasshopper..
Not all is lost however.
Since Sept 16th, when I received my Fold2, I've been using the stock Launcher with Home Up (Good Lock plugin).
The experience has been great, and the dual layout is very practical. I can't say I miss AL that much...
Worth setting it up and taking advantage of the dual setup. Until any 3rd party Launcher supports the same, I'm sticking with stock.

Successfully using Nova Launcher on mine. You can even have two different wallpapers, though the rest of the settings are mirrored on both screens. No issues yet using this, scales really well.

After a few days of ownership, I'm still not sure. Currently using the stock Samsung launcher but missing Action's features and customization. Samsung's launcher is so basic.
I also tried the tasker method of changing launchers based on the screen. It works but I don't like when I go from one screen to the other and see the wrong launcher before hitting the home button again.
At the same time, having a launcher with the same layout stretched on both screens wouldn't work for me because I like to take advantage of the very large inner screen with lots of icons and widgets that would simply not translate well to the front screen.
I really hope developers of launchers will consider adding folding support.
I don't have issues with Nova since my home screen is only the dock ...

Yeah, you can run action that way as well but it isn't what we want. I was glad to see that the edge screen still exists with 3rd party launchers so you can still set app pairs with it. Really wish they'd let us set them anywhere.
as a couple of others have said, Nova Launcher is working fine.

Every launcher 'works' if you use the exact same layout and sizing on both screens.
That's horrible. Try the default launcher and see what its supposed to be like.
Also, does anyone else have issues with a long pause between wallpaper showing and the icons appearing when you had the launcher open on the front screen and then change it to the big screen?
I'm on action and no problems at all other than being able to make dedicated setups.

The one and only true Z Flip cover screen IME
If blocking keyboards doesn't prevent using one,
does blocking them really make sense?
After releasing the code to enable keyboards as part of SamSprung TooUI, this is a standalone cover screen IME. This project has been developed in the hope of one day being natively supported.

Setup is relatively easy.
Enable the permissions
-> appear over apps to allow it to display
-> accessibility to toggle it on the fly
Enable keyboard (do NOT set as default)
A free version has been released here through GitHub. The GitHub version has been posted exclusively on xda as a thank you to everyone who has been a part of SamSprung since it began. It is basic, but functional. The Google Play version will be updated with additional features and improvements.
Traditional keyboard functionality has been specifically blocked on the cover screen by a root level configuration.
This app bypasses current limitations by creating the keyboard around the field instead of fields requesting a cached keyboard instance.
See the GitHub README for setup and usage information

If a picture is worth 1000 words, it would take hundreds to match the code being written.
It somehow not working for me.
Sorry for the delay. In pulling the keyboard out of the main app, it's still trying to end the service when the device goes idle. Since there is no longer a master service to restart it, it only runs once.
Fix should be up in a couple minutes.
Should stay alive now.
Being completely honest, the keyboard works about 100 times better separate from the launcher. The two biggest issues, one of which was restoring the default when not in use, are much easier to manage when all the other parts don't get in the way.
Now that it's a separate project, we can also start doing adjustable size and themes and all the other proper keyboard stuff that couldn't really fit before.
Added sound and vibration options. The sound may not sync perfectly. Still working out a better way to do that.
I've also decided to make the Google Play release a paid app to start recovering a little of the cost. The version here will still be free. The only real difference will be that the version on Google Play will continue to receive cosmetic updates and new features.

Nice. I'm actually glad you did a paid version of the keyboard given all the work you've done on the whole Samsprung development project. I didn't buy the Play Store version of the keyboard but I made another contribution today towards the Samsprung development project. I think everyone using the Samprung launcher and/or keyboard should at a minimum buy the Play Store version of the keyboard just to contribute in some way towards this project. It's a very small price to pay for something that has made our cover screen much better than what Samsung has done with it. Keep up the good work, twistedumbrella!!
Thanks @crawls69! You've always been a great supporter and it really means a lot.
@twistedumbrella Is this a keyboard for the cover screen? If so, I can't get it to work....

The logcat button can collect a log of any crashes. If it isn't a crash, it may have to do with the type of entry box you're trying to use it on. What have you tried?
Responding to text messages from the native message app.
Alright. I'll run some tests and see if I can reproduce the issue.
Is it just not appearing at all? As in not even a flicker.
I rearranged some things to avoid the keyboard getting cancelled out by other views. Hopefully that will resolve the issue.

Not showing up at all.
Is that still the case? I was able to get it to stop appearing in a couple tests and patched those issues. I haven't been able to get it to not appear since, but that doesn't rule out the possibility of a situation I missed.
Admittedly, it is much MUCH easier to simply include the keyboard in the app using it, especially with accessibility.
Rather than catching the call to enable the keyboard, an InputConnection can be generated from the field itself. Some may not care about passing all of your views through the app, but I treat everyone else's data like I would my own. Grabbing the field and modifying it within the app seems like a huge risk for privacy concerns.
The alternative would be to create an invisible entry box and write to it. This would generate the required InputConnection and avoid directly traversing the screen, but has a large performance cost.
The final version is to temporarily take the default keyboard role. This gives the keyboard the default InputConnection and allows typing directly into an entry box, much the same way a conventional IME would do it. There is one part that hasn't been implemented yet to make this ideal, but where's the fun in copying code and not doing any work?

Still not showing up on the cover screen. The picture shows it showing up in my notification panel.
@Landrea made a good point. This needs a preview.
Not the prettiest in the world, but now it has one.

My point was I couldn't see what I was writing. Now the keyboard has the preview. Not the best one, but still, good job @twistedumbrella . Keep working on this project, it really has value!
It's super ugly right now, but I'm working on getting it somewhat bearable.

twistedumbrella,
It may be super ugly to you but it's drop dead gorgeous to me. LOL
I was willing to accept the fact that I would never have the same experience on the Z Flip 3 cover screen that I did on my RAZR 5G cover display. But you keep getting us closer to it. I no longer miss the functionality of the RAZR 5G cover display (except for the fact that it's larger). That said, is there any way you can do an update that causes the cover screen to physically expand to perhaps 2.7 inches or so? LOL. You already accomplished what was apparently impossible for Samsung to do. Who knows??
As much as I use the cover screen, I was actually gonna get rid of the Z Flip 3 and go back to the RAZR 5G after Android 12 cause the widget version of Samsprung to stop working. I'm glad I didn't. I would be kicking myself right now.
I'm usually not one to throw shade but given what all has been accomplished with the Samsprung launcher and keyboard, Samsung should be really ashamed of themselves. I'm sure they have an army of resources at their disposal that could have easily gotten this done (they have a market capitalization in excess of $400 billion). They should offer you a licensing deal!!
