Third Party Launchers - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Questions & Answers

I have a favorite launcher I have used for years and would like to continue doing so when I get my Z Flip 2. Does anyone have any information what what can be expected when trying to use a launcher other than UI Samsung provides? For those interested, the launcher I've used since 2017 is Action Launcher (and of course I do have others, but I always return to AL).

I sent Lacy an email on this; they usually respond quickly. I tried searching the OG subsection without hitting paydirt.

Yes Lacy does usually get right back. I also sent the question to him. I may have to just wait and try it myself.

I can't imagine it'll be an issue. The only issue would be when you try to use a third party launcher with native gestures - it works, but it's buggy. OneUI 2.5 promised a fix, but that wasn't the case.

Most work but don't support two screen layouts yet, that much can be gleaned from the OG subsection. Launcher aficionados will of course want two different setups so both screens can be maximised.

I saw a reddit post of someone using Tasker and some event loop, to have the default launcher in the external small screen and Nova Launcher in the Tablet one for the original Fold. Can't expect that though to be the best choice. I think at least in the first few months we'd have to stick to the default...

Seems like the plan will be to try and see if it works. Stock is always the default, however, default is (seldom?) the best choice, especially when one knows the many options there are for custom.

My money is on them making it happen. I worked with them when gestures first came out which at first conflicted with the drawer pull out from the bottom (this was pre official google gestures) and they fixed it in a matter of days. This of course might take more time but they are very reactive to making these things happen. Folding devices are not going away and they butter their bread by selling that launcher, it's not a side job. I'm fairly confident it will be coming and in the near term rather than further out.

Do you think Lawnchair will work ok?

Give them time to get hands on and sure most mainstream ones will work.

I sent this to Lacy as well, but there has not been a response yet. I am sure he needs to hake a good look first.
He is always great with replies.
Q: Foldables (Z Fold2) Support?
Vagelis

to support
Greetings Chris,
I am a long time user and supporter of AL.
As I am switching to a Galaxy Z Fold 2, I am curious as to whether you would consider supporting the dual screen layout that the Fold 2 has.
The stock launcher has different layouts for each screen, which allows customization of the different usage scenarios each screen offers.
There also appears to be API documentation from Google and Samsung to support this.
https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/foldables
https://developer.samsung.com/sdp/b...how-to-update-your-apps-for-foldable-displays
https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy-z/ux-and-ui-considerations.html
I know that technically we can use AL with the same layout for both screens, but the dpi changes make the single layout for both screens not optimal for neither.
This might be a good opportunity for AL to acquire some new users; others in the field have an interesting response:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyFold...thinks_galaxy_fold_and_foldables_in/?sort=old
I would love to continue using AL with the Fold, but for now I guess I'd have to downgrade my user experience. No Covers, no Shutters... it makes me shudder (wink, wink).
What are your thoughts please?
Thank you for your consideration.
Stay safe and healthy.

I am in the same boat, my Z Fold 2 comes today. I've been using Action Launcher for years as my favorite launcher. Nothing else compares. I hope support will be added and I'm happy to lend a hand if I can.

I have not heard from Chris yet. I am sure it will take some time to figure this out. If I were to base progress on the availability of cases, I'd say, patience grasshopper..
Not all is lost however.
Since Sept 16th, when I received my Fold2, I've been using the stock Launcher with Home Up (Good Lock plugin).
The experience has been great, and the dual layout is very practical. I can't say I miss AL that much...
Worth setting it up and taking advantage of the dual setup. Until any 3rd party Launcher supports the same, I'm sticking with stock.

Successfully using Nova Launcher on mine. You can even have two different wallpapers, though the rest of the settings are mirrored on both screens. No issues yet using this, scales really well.
~

After a few days of ownership, I'm still not sure. Currently using the stock Samsung launcher but missing Action's features and customization. Samsung's launcher is so basic.
I also tried the tasker method of changing launchers based on the screen. It works but I don't like when I go from one screen to the other and see the wrong launcher before hitting the home button again.
At the same time, having a launcher with the same layout stretched on both screens wouldn't work for me because I like to take advantage of the very large inner screen with lots of icons and widgets that would simply not translate well to the front screen.
I really hope developers of launchers will consider adding folding support.

I don't have issues with Nova since my home screen is only the dock ...

Yeah, you can run action that way as well but it isn't what we want. I was glad to see that the edge screen still exists with 3rd party launchers so you can still set app pairs with it. Really wish they'd let us set them anywhere.

as a couple of others have said, Nova Launcher is working fine.

Every launcher 'works' if you use the exact same layout and sizing on both screens.
That's horrible. Try the default launcher and see what its supposed to be like.
Also, does anyone else have issues with a long pause between wallpaper showing and the icons appearing when you had the launcher open on the front screen and then change it to the big screen?

I'm on action and no problems at all other than being able to make dedicated setups.

What?
A vertical launcher. It will, hopefully, allow you to use shortcuts, widgets and info tiles. And skins.
I plan to build something that looks like IidaHome, but more flexible (more info on IidaHome here and here)

Long start-up time is long!
Lacks many sexy effects.
Create Your Own Theme!
The default template you can see in the above pictures is available in source code on GitHub
It is very easy to adapt to create your own. Ask me for help if you have to!
Why?
My phone used to rock IidaHome launcher.
Of course, being a rip from a Japanese phone, users are asking for new features, etc., but, really, we do not have access to the source code and adding any feature is an exercise in hacking smali files.
I like vertical launchers but the Windows 7 copies, although quite sexy, only offer a limited number of apps per row and are limited by their reference launcher's own UI choices (Metro UI)
So, I started work on my own launcher (the mere fact of writing this sentence makes me feel embarrassed for re-inventing the wheel)
That's interesting. Is that what will appear on the App Drawer or is that for the home screens?
i'd be very interested in this as well... good luck
it looks pointed on the right way, keep on it. I just hope there will be a version for mobiles, not only for tablets (you're using a nook, aren't you?)
It's a complete home screen. I had not considered the app drawer angle.
[Mobiles] Yes it's one of the things that bothered me with IidaHome: it doesn't make good use of real estate offered by different resolutions. This particular home is created with the intent to work with any resolution; it will be possible to specify how many cells you wish per row so that you can have more cells on a Nook and, say, a max of three or four on a WVGA device.
Two quick question for the OP. What version of Android will this be for? Will you include grayscale support for the Nook Touch?
I should work on 2.1+ so your device should work.
Grayscale: I am not sure what needs to be done for that but I can certainly test on a grayscale device.
yum yum ......looking forward to this
Day 2 Update
(I can only work on this in the evening)
No video at this point, but I have:
1. Icons properly lining up and scrolling
2. Multi-column icons support
3. Add more application shortcuts
4. Add shortcuts such as bookmarks, pictures, contacts...
5. Add widgets
Missing:
1. Persistence
2. Correct icon gap management for multi-row widgets
3. Re-ordering icons
4. Separators/Folders
5. Proper refresh
6. Any kind of objects management
7. Customization of any kind
Interesting launcher. I think it would look better if the tiles had no background or a transparent one.
Thanks.
Of course the pictures you are seeing right now are by no means a commitment to a given look. In fact, it will be skinable, meaning no tiles, transparent tiles or tiles-made-of-cheese tiles
Day 4 Update
Added a new video at the bottom of the OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyK8kn5NsE4
This video shows widgets and on-screen dragging and re-ordering of shortcuts and widgets.
This is a fantastic idea. I'm tired of iPhone wannabe horizontal launchers. It makes much more sense to allocate the icons in a vertical space rather than horizontal. It's much easier to slide vertically rather than horizontally. I believe this launcher is going to be big when it's ready.
when this is ready will it work on asus transformer (tablet)??
Day 5
Not much excitement today. I completely rewrote my layout engine so that every empty cell is automatically filled with something if possible.
I also added separators. They don't do everything I want yet.
Something that's starting to bother me: I really need to animate the widgets; at this points they can display an initial state and I can touch them to launch whatever, but they do not have a frame-by-frame animator class to give them life yet.
Jazux:
Yes, it is meant to work with any resolution so it should work on tablets.
The animation of the tile and transitions are very important to me and other i believe! And don't forget to keep everything fluid, because i have tried several launchers and only 1 is good enough
Keep up the good work
Hum, nice.one, i had a look and a long try, to iida ui.
You should try to.make it as.beautifully, animated as it.is.
Nice work, keep it up.

Day 6
Currently, there are no animations. Things show up, scroll up/down, disappear. That's because I want to get the basics right before I get into animating anything.
But, yes, this program will ultimately be animated; I want to use it myself so I would like something that makes me happy to look at and interact with.
Anyway, today:
I got the widget to display correctly and instantly. Then, that behavior broke (hate days like that!)
Separators work; they can hide apps
Complete refactoring or "Apps/widgets/special" code
Introduction of "Edit" mode (moving icons around will work in both modes)

Yeah. First fix the important things
Will there be a beta version for testing purposes?
If you get the vertical scrolling working perfectly how big a leap would it be to have say a regular left/right scrolling launcher with vertical scrolling only from your default home screen? I'd love to have a standard 5-screen horizontal launcher with one up/one down on the central default home screen (both with continuous scrolling...), or even as a launcher 'cube' with four horizontal and one up one down accessible from any of the horizontal scrolling screens (like turning a cube). Is any of this possible?

Really amazing concept.
What is the difference between the two versions?
I think preference is spelled wrongly as well.
No way to redorder widgets?
Hey! Thanks for the kind words, let me answer your questions:
1. The difference right now is the paid version dosen't have an add in the app drawer, although that add is not producing that much revenue anyway. So the paid version is just basically to support us. So far it's paying the electricity bill but it's only doing that mind you.
2. Where is it spelt wrong?
3. Yeah you can, it should explain that in the video. If it dosen't: you just press the bar next to the widget, and then press the bar of a different widget and they will get swapped.
i like your choice for a name
are you limited to only having 6-7 icons on the screen?
Ads in a launcher are a no-go. Why not just disable an option or add something special to the paid version?
I will never use a launcher that features advertisements - the free version of the W7 launcher is the only other one I can think of, and I used it for all of 2 minutes before the ads drove me insane.
@GoneMADSoftware No you can have as many as you want in that strip in the middle
@Braneless You do have a point since right now we are making nothing off the adds, except people complaining about their existence. I'll think of something that the paid version will feature so the users will use it.
I looks cool

Like the look of the launcher a lot, if we could move widgets themselves it would be nicer, if you only have one widget you can't move it... also not all of my apps show in the list. More home screens and icons would be nice, no landscape mode, it cuts it off and the ability to scroll makes the launcher move around in portrait mode landscape just doesn't look right.
Great concept, keep up the work guys and I agree, great name for a launcher.

If you only have one widget you can move it arou... I don't follow. It's a widget list, like an app list, a lists start at the top therefore the first (and in this case only) widget would be at the top... where else would it be? I mean it's clearly a list of widgets so where else would you have it?
The fact that not all of you apps still baffles me. I just can't seem to find a way that works to get all the apps, properly, on all model phones. The way its done now seems to be the standard one and it works on most phones... what model phone do you have? I'll think of something... I do have 2, 1000-or more page android books lined up to read, if only my E-book reader would arrive this century, but i digress.
More home screens... i'd rather use the one home screen that exists already and expand it sideways with more branches. So you can add more icons and what-not. If i just add more screens it's like every other launcher out there.
I don't want it to have a landscape mode and i will probably remove the dodgy landscape that it has right now since it looks very wired. The launcher moves a bit in portrait mode because on a HVGA or QVGA screen the picture itself is bigger than the screen of the phone therefore a QVGA user won't be able to see all the icons without scrolling. I do admit that the slight movement of scrolling that it dose right not is a tad annoying and i will get around to fixing that; but there are only so many hours in the day and i've been having huge issues with sony xperia phones not displaying the icons of apps since yesterday so... need break!
Cheers for your feedback though!
Suggestion
Cool concept. Being able to select the icons on the home screen would be nice. Like the look of the stock ones from the launcher but prefer to use different SMS and Launcher apps. Having those apps Icon's mixed with the Stock phone etc. is less clean then it could be. Keep up the good work

Don't know what you mean by "detect" but if you mean actually switch them, the "go home" feature has a page system that works with a select few launchers, alternatively you can simply use different launchers altogether and use the load app feature to load them at different times. The latter is probably better, since then you can truly have different launchers and not be stuck with a single homescreen per "profile" like Chameleon is

Will there ever be a smart-phone version? This looks absolutely stunning and I wouldn't mind chipping in if it was coming for smartphone.
Also seems like you're making good progress. I opened this thread and went to kickstarter, saw 893 backers and 7980 something $, posted this comment, went back 896 backers and 8008$
WOW its already 8018$
Wow, I can't believe how much money this has got in just one day. I think it was at $50 or so when I checked earlier.

New App - Amazing technology! The end of homescreen chaos!

What is it?
How many times have you rambled through your phone searching for an App? Wondering where in the world, among all those icons is the one you are searching.
Worry no more! That's what EZ-Launch is for.
To be honest, Ez-Launch is more of a widget than an app, and it helps you makes sense of your overburdened home screen.
How do I install it ?
Well, after you find " Ez-Launch " on google play store and download (Apologies for the absence of a link) and download, You add the Ez-Launch widget to your homepage, and EZ does the rest.
The app will learn your preferences and give you E-Z access to your favorite apps.
What if I don't want this app or that app on my widget? What choices do I have?
In purpose of enabling you more control we have defined a settings screen that enables you to select one of 3 options for every app installed on your device:
Always - This app will always be on the widget
Off - Never place this app on the widget.
Auto - Its up for the EZ-Launch app to decide.
In addition you also have the possibility to save a state of the widget (a certain collection of apps that you like) and load it later on as you please.
What?? How does it work? Is it... MAGIC!?
No. It isn't magic. It is a project developed by 4 Computer science students from Tel aviv University within an android technologies workshop in collaboration with Google.
During the project we have researched, studied and developed algorithms and heuristics (Yeah, sounds a bit complicated) all for your benefit and ease of mind. In order not to burden the reader, we will briefly just explain that the application service simply learns you, and knows how to give you the most convenient arrangement for your home screen that just continues to improve.
This is a project in the Beta phase, and we strongly recommend that you give it a try and download, especially if you know someone (Like your parents) that is having a hard time managing their home screen.
For those of you who don't know what Beta means, it is the phase right before the official release of the app, where you get to try it for free(!) and even influence the development by giving us your valuable feedback.
That's right! If you have complaints, suggestions, or any type of feedback just let us know by contacting the development team by mail:

This has quite the potential. I am amazed that I seem to be the only one trying it out here! I've been using it a couple of days now and it already gives me a great list of my most used widgets. I'm using it as a 5x3 widget on my note and thanks for making it scrollable as well!

Great app indeed!
I only have one comment: while using it with Nova Launcher, resizing the widget 'kills' the way the icons are displayed, as I can only see half of the last row (for custom number of rows/columns).
good work with the app, reminds me of similar things with WinMo 6.x on my Sony Eric son X1 a while back. Would be nice to have resizable app icons within the widget though, if possible.
What a great idea! I am also surprised this app is not getting more attention. Nice work.

Hi,
Nice app. Would be great if you could make icon text optional and a scale down for icons. Till now I used a launcher-x widget on my home screen that is 5x2 grid size and contains 7x3 icons of my most used apps.
As is use these apps often the text is not needed. By scaling down the icons I can just get more icons in it.
Pretty nice app so far. If you could implement some of these features it would be worth buying it.

The last update from a couple of hours ago caused a reset. Just use your phone like normal and after a couple of hours or days the widget will automatically give you a better list.

It's still pretty rough, but all the README and Wiki and whatever other nonsense is being repackaged into a single website to make it easier to navigate. It should be up and running in the next day or two.

I will be going into surgery next week and may not be available for a bit during recovery, so I will try to get everything done ASAP. Thank you to everyone who has supported this project and made it possible to finally take the time off needed to breathe normally again.
SamSprung was released one year ago today as the first app launcher for the cover screen. With nearly 2000 new downloads per version and over 800 builds released, we have reached over 1 million downloads. Cheers!
Just an update - surgery did not kill me and new builds should be filtering through as Google finishes reviewing them.
I love you so much this is my first flip and I am blown away by this neat app. appreciate ya.
Awesome! Anyone can compare this with CoverOS?

There is a thread for that. It's not really appropriate for the individual app threads (since I assume you want an unbiased opinion).
Are the launcher icons too small? I recently received a bug report saying they were entirely too small, but also feel like making them much larger will make the launcher seem clunky on a 1 inch screen. I run a DPI that makes anyone over 40 cringe, so I am a bit partial to smaller icons for person use. Are other people struggling with the app icons?

To be fair I think it varies on the icons, like personally me I'm a big boy so got big thumbs but I hardly ever misclick something; but that's also as you said, 1 inch screen there isn't much you can do about it. Possibly having an option for size adjustment would be cool but I see no problems with it.
Google Play reviews are a little backed up, but new builds were pushed to improve the overall stability (and reliability) of removing helper views. This should solve a few of the issues with ghost screens preventing input and other bugs.
Is this no longer being developed?

The latest update was today. This thread is not a reflection of how active development is at any given time, though.
I don't really post announcements here because there isn't a whole lot to announce that anyone would come here to find.
Being open source, there is really no reason to explain what goes into each version. Downloads automatically show the changes since the previous version and building automatically happens when there are new changes. Google Play gets updated for every significant change.
Most bugs or requests get submitted through the app, so they aren't being posted here to reply. Any that aren't submitted to the GitHub directly come through email and are converted to GitHub issues.
This app doesn't have a paywall or features to unlock, so there is nothing to sell. It's kind of unnecessary to persuade anyone that a free app is worth trying because the price is already convincing.
Honestly, the lack of posts here is a positive sign that everything is running smoothly.
Yes, I am still here and still actively updating. TooUI now supports the Oppo Find N2 Flip.

Android 13 enabled another of Google's brilliant ideas to disable the ability of any window to pass touch to windows below it.
There are a few exceptions. A completely invisible window (so basically malware) is granted the ability to pass touch. A window more transparent than the arbitrary maximum opacity of an overlay (0.8 or 20% transparent) can also pass touch, but results in the window under it being visible through the current one. The last, and my personal favorite, is accessibility. By requesting ANY accessibility feature, such as retrieving notification text, you gain unrestricted access to control the entire device.
Google's only method to control accessibility is to require that at least one use case fits one of the ones they allow and that you notify the user before requesting access to accessibility that you are going to ask them for access to accessibility. Put simply, you need a nag screen.
On top of that stroke of brilliance, they are now planning to add extra permissions and disclaimers for services running in the foreground.
This means that any service that is required to notify you it is running and maintain a notification reminding you it is running will now have to make absolutely sure you know it will be running through a series of nag screens and disclosures.
Google is trying to emulate the security promises made by Apple, but trying to pass all of the work to individual developers. The end result being a platform no less insecure than it was, but with frustrated users and developers doing a lot of meaningless work.
For me the newest github release from yesterday works better than the one on google play. Nice work, my friend.
