Droid Maxx 4.4.4 - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new to the site and to rooting so for give me if i ask some dumb questions. How do i root the droid Maxx 4.4.4 I just got the phone and i'm going from the droid razr maxx that is not rooted. I have not had the phone activated yet as i am using FoxFi for my wireless hotspot. I still have the unlimited plan and dont want to upgrade to a new phone i cant use my as my wireless hotspot if possible. So my next question is if i switch to the droid maxx and i root the phone can I install an app that will allow me to use it as my wiresless hotspot. I dont know yet if the bootloader is unlocked, I have not checked.

4.4.4 cant be rooted unless unlocked bootloader. Bootloader cant be unlocked if on 4.4.4.
If unlocked there are tether exploits available.

Extremely unlikely. The moto maxx community has practically thrown money at developers with fruitless results. Nobody has any interest in rooting this phone and the majority of us have lost hope. I'm going to go with no and say a root for the maxx is never going to happen.

I am not sure but you might be able to do the tether hack with a file explorer.

I'm on 4.4.4 and I'm rooted and have unlock bootloader
You can contact motorola to have them give you a unlock code for your phone. I actually have the Developer addition so that makes it different from yours but it should not make that big of a difference on the consumer side. It will just void your warranty. I hope that helps.

[Q] Xoom Family

Quick question... Is everything in here compatible with the new Xoom Family available in Best Buy?
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Motorol...909487&skuId=3639159&st=xoom family&cp=1&lp=1
I'm not quite sure what the difference is between the original one and the new Family edition, that's why I ask... I don't want to risk bricking my new Xoom
Almost certainly nothing for the original Xoom will work for the Family Media Edition (F-ME for short). This is due to different battery specs. Somebody that is feeling brave/stupid can try to prove me wrong.
the only difference i see is different chassis and the Family edition has an HD IPS screen. which i want to know if it would be possible to replace the hd screen i have with the family edition IPS one.

adb reboot-bootloader can't find device. It appears that adb has been disabled. Turning on with pwr-volUp results in device being seen as needing apx drivers when connected via USB. I'm out of my league with nvflash...

Enabling adb should be a piece of cake after we gain root... My Xoom still doesn't arrive, I'll get it by Friday... I've been thinking; most of the root methods are based on Rage against the cage, I even remember an APK that after installation it rebooted the phone and the phone was rooted... I also realized that having a locked bootloader isn't guarantee that root isn't achievable, 3 months passed before the Atrix 4G's bootloader was unlocked and still we got root before it happened.
I just need to know where to look and I'll do it.

I know root often occurs before unlock. That is another concern of mine with this tablet: Will I ever be able to load custom roms on it? We just don't know yet I reckon.

I don't have the original one so I can't really compare, sorry
Would you please at least open it and get some Hi Def pictures from inside ?
Many of us are interested about the new IPS screen from this version eventually.
If we will be able to find the manufacturer and read the specs maybe a replacement for our "original" screen will make us the happier Xoom owners ever.
Sorry my poor english

Agreed, I would LOVE to know if we will get root on the Ultra and Maxx before I buy one of them!
I really hope someone works on root, I would love to get this phone but I need wireless tethering!
Root will end up coming. I believe the verizon moto x will be the same root method.
Unlocked, thats the million dollar question.
I'd like to know if anyone is working on it as well...
I don't necessarily need to be able to do ROMs, but I'd like to get root to see if I can get the AOSP browser on this damn thing. I need the bookmark syncing with Chrome on my PC, but the Chrome app just blows. AOSP browser works perfectly.
I, too, assume it'll be a similar root process as the Moto X since they're almost completely identical. But the SW on the Moto X is even less modified than on our Droids, so that small difference might be part of a significant difference when it comes down to rooting. So far it looks as if you've got to unlock the bootloader of the Moto X via the moto dev site, then flash a rooted kernel. That won't translate to the Ultra because of the different kernel :/
I'm giving it the two weeks that the return policy is for root to arrive. If it isn't available by then I'll eat the $35 restock fee and get myself a 32GB S4 (and go through all the trouble again of transferring phones...). Tethering is far too important to be potentially stuck without it.

Motorola doesn't offer a bootloader unlock for this phone, so we can't go that route yet. It will have to be a real exploit with temp root if /system modifications can't survive reboots.

Took like 9 months to unlock the Razr HD, but you have the potential help of the Moto X to speed things along (All carriers). Although I don't foresee many developers jumping on the Moto X bandwagon based on the specs. I dunno, it could go either way. Good luck to you all, I'm ditching my Razr HD for a G2

Right now you have very, very little chance of getting a root. And about a bootloader unlock. I would more than likely guess that was a one time deal. So if you bought this and are waiting for a root/bootloader unlock. You are going to be disappointed.
I'm sure root will find its way. The unlocked boot loader makes me nervous though. I'm curious if something like safestrap will make its way to these phones. I'm still hoping that the combined attention of the four devices and the popularity of the moto x will get these devices an unlocked boot loader.

A little off topic - think the One has a better chance? I know HTC isn't normally your wheelhouse, but with your connections and all...
Ignore the prompt to update for now, no matter how annoying it might be. Like someone else said, with so many devices sharing common architecture root is just a matter of time. Bootloaders are a different story.

it's hard to tell.
I have the s4 which I will dump soon, as I am about 99% sure unlock is not coming.
I am keeping my s3 though.
I also have the HTC One, I DO feel we will get unlock at the least, and hopefully S-OFF.
I usually give all my phones at least 6 months before moving on.
Thinking of going to buy the moto x just for kicks as I never own moto device and the X peeks my interest, I feel I could use it and toss it around and not have to worry about it and it can take it, compared to my HTC one that's like a watch (jewelery.)
Curious to play with the different software, HTC Sense is and always has been favorite, Touchwiz grew on me greatly, and want to check out this moto x. /I usually can't live without root, but I wouldn't be using the phone activated, just to have it.
i'm sure Root will be re shortly .
Hope in @djrbliss for root and bootloader exploit , he has hacked Razr HD bootloader here

I hope it does come but this phone will just be my backup phone for when I'm giving my S4 a breather, I took care of my S4 before that software update thankfully.

There very well may be, but moto is not going to make that public in most cases. It's easier to patch in silence and not tip anyone off.

Yeah the main thing keeping me holding onto this S4 is the fact it has MDK. Otherwise I generally am liking the One better now - though the S4 camera sure can take some great shots and tends to last a bit longer on the battery. The Maxx is pretty awesome... camera is mediocre, but better once you get used to its idiosyncrasies. It's basically pure Android, so if you love sense, you might be bored with it. But if there's any phone that hiccups less than the One, it's this one. Incredibly smooth and snappy experience. And obviously great battery life... Voice controls are pretty cool, too. Not perfect, but still pretty cool

XT1028 Future bootloader unlock?

Name Goes here: i see, thank you for your time, is it possible that both of these devices bootloaders will be unlockable in the future?
Motorola Employee: At this moment, since MotoG is considered a new device as it was just out of the market for some time, not yet.
Motorola Employee: By the time that we receive roll-outs from Corporate, we will surely let you know via the web site.
Name Goes here: Since Verizon locks most of their bootloaders (including my old Motorola Droid RazR) does this make the chances even worse?
Motorola Employee: Not really.

Urgent question regarding bootloader!

Is there any way to unlock a droid mini using motorola's website? I'm interested in buying a bootloader unlocked droid mini, and the person who's selling it to me says he did so on motorola's website.. the thing is, I don't see the droid mini listed as a device that can be unlocked, so I'm weary... that is, unless he unlocked it using the chinese man's method. He sent me a picture of the "bootloader unlocked" message on the phone and a TWRP screen on it as well...
Any thoughts? I'm really torn between getting this phone and the s4 mini, though the s4 mini costs a lot more it has a microsd card and I'm not sure if the droid mini's camera update a while back made it so its' camera is comparable to the s4 mini.
Anyway, please any reply could really save my bacon!

That's the thing, I'm not sure it is, I'm pretty sure he's not lying but I wanted to make sure since it's a big deal for me- I had an android phone with a locked bootloader and no rom flashing capability and it really sucked, in any case If he's unlocked great but I wanna know if his story checks out- is there an unlock for droid mini on the motorola website? (photos can be photoshopped and all)
I don't believe there is an official unlock method for the mini, just the Chinese guy. I would ask the seller for more clarification before buying.

he simply unlocked it via the chinese metod, then used the motorola website to unlock it, theres nothing be worry about, you wont get another droid mini with bootloader unlocked easily.
Whats really your concern?

The problem is that the Chinese method doesn't use the Motorola website, it's one or the other. The code from the Chinese guy is the code you would use the website to get. Just sounds a little fishy is all.
Edit to clarify, you don't use the Motorola website to unlock the device, that is done directly on your computer.

As long as you can handle not having a warranty on your device you should be fine with it being unlocked by a non standard method

Unlocking via any method voids the warranty. How it's unlocked makes absolutely no difference. Unlocked is unlocked.

There is no way to unlock a droid mini from Motorola's website. The website only give you instructions on how to unlock once you have a code, but you have to get the code from somewhere else. I would just ask if the seller got it from the Chinese guy because he may just be trying to simplify things by just saying he got it from moto (since most people wouldn't know the difference anyways).
As far as photo shop, anyone can just come on XDA and find photos we all have taken and post one of those. You won't know until you get the phone if it's real or not. Risk you take buying phones second hand.
Tell him to send you a picture of the bootloader it will say unlocked status 3 and have him put something in the picture specific to you so he can't just download a screen shot. the only thing suspect is him saying he unlocked via moto site that is not possible. The mini didn't have a dev edition..

Report yourself if you have the Developer Edition here.

I've had the developer edition since may 15th and I have seen very poor development on it since it's launch, now that the retail version has root I've seen more action even for the dev edition so my question is? How may of you have the developer edition and why aren't you developing? LMAO... My own answer is I'm not a developer but it bought i because I love root ASAP I get a phone plus I like to flash custom kernels and Rom.

This is the main reason why most people hope and pray for retail versions to get unlocked/rooted. There's not as much support for DE phones, therefore not as many people working on them. Some other carrier's ROMs work on Verizon, so you can trial an error there. Only downside right now to retail is locked bootloader, so no custom kernels but this phone already flies
I'm grandfathered into VZW's unlimited 4G. If I were to buy a subsidized phone, the first thing they'd do would be to force me into a tiered plan. For that reason I only buy unsubsidized phones. Since I'm paying full price, why not get the developer phone? I've been using a Galaxy Nexus since the release date and have been ROMing it ever since I got it, so I'm not new to this, and I don't know how I could survive without a rooted phone.
I just got mine three days ago. I haven't put a custom ROM on it yet. I want to make sure the build I use is compatible with the Developer Edition. For now, I'm happy with the phone and having root.

I've had the Develop Edition since early June. I previously had a S4 Developer Edition. I too am not a developer and I avoid having a phone I can not root. True, development for the S5 has been pretty slow, but now with root and Safestrap for the retail version there are a number of custom ROMs (a couple of really good ones) becoming available. I'm currently running the custom ROM by elliweg and loving it.
From someone who has been in the XDA world since the advent of android, i will say that this is probably as good as it's ever going to get. Only thing that will change that is an unlocked bootloader, but listening to people in the know, the chances of that happening are .0001%. Devs generally don't wanna get a phone that they can't really develop for. And the handful of people on XDA who actually have the kind of knowledge to crack the bootloader do not seem to be very interested in our phone. I have kinda just accepted that if i wanna be a crack flasher i'm gonna have to get it a new phone.
A phone being super popular and garnering lots of attention no longer guarantees alot of development around it.

Ehhh I don't really agree. It's not that people aren't knowledgeable, it's that this phone can't be cracked for an unlocked BL. The S4 still hasn't been cracked in over a year now. The popular phones DO get the most attention, especially Samsung devices.

I have the Dev Ed too. Beware - always remember to uncheck Reactivation Lock before going to TWRP. I'm stuck there now.
I positive this will be considered a stupid question but I'm curious as to why we can't dd an unlocked bootloader off a dev edition and flash it onto a non-dev edition. I know it's not possible, just curious as to why. Is it because the dev edition is a totally different phone so this signature doesn't match? Are we not sure which partition it's on?
