Report yourself if you have the Developer Edition here. - Verizon Galaxy S 5 General

I've had the developer edition since may 15th and I have seen very poor development on it since it's launch, now that the retail version has root I've seen more action even for the dev edition so my question is? How may of you have the developer edition and why aren't you developing? LMAO... My own answer is I'm not a developer but it bought i because I love root ASAP I get a phone plus I like to flash custom kernels and Rom.

This is the main reason why most people hope and pray for retail versions to get unlocked/rooted. There's not as much support for DE phones, therefore not as many people working on them. Some other carrier's ROMs work on Verizon, so you can trial an error there. Only downside right now to retail is locked bootloader, so no custom kernels but this phone already flies

I'm grandfathered into VZW's unlimited 4G. If I were to buy a subsidized phone, the first thing they'd do would be to force me into a tiered plan. For that reason I only buy unsubsidized phones. Since I'm paying full price, why not get the developer phone? I've been using a Galaxy Nexus since the release date and have been ROMing it ever since I got it, so I'm not new to this, and I don't know how I could survive without a rooted phone.
I just got mine three days ago. I haven't put a custom ROM on it yet. I want to make sure the build I use is compatible with the Developer Edition. For now, I'm happy with the phone and having root.

I've had the Develop Edition since early June. I previously had a S4 Developer Edition. I too am not a developer and I avoid having a phone I can not root. True, development for the S5 has been pretty slow, but now with root and Safestrap for the retail version there are a number of custom ROMs (a couple of really good ones) becoming available. I'm currently running the custom ROM by elliweg and loving it.

From someone who has been in the XDA world since the advent of android, i will say that this is probably as good as it's ever going to get. Only thing that will change that is an unlocked bootloader, but listening to people in the know, the chances of that happening are .0001%. Devs generally don't wanna get a phone that they can't really develop for. And the handful of people on XDA who actually have the kind of knowledge to crack the bootloader do not seem to be very interested in our phone. I have kinda just accepted that if i wanna be a crack flasher i'm gonna have to get it a new phone.
A phone being super popular and garnering lots of attention no longer guarantees alot of development around it.

Ehhh I don't really agree. It's not that people aren't knowledgeable, it's that this phone can't be cracked for an unlocked BL. The S4 still hasn't been cracked in over a year now. The popular phones DO get the most attention, especially Samsung devices.

Just to clear thing up in case you didn't know the Original software for the s4 did get the bootloader unlocked, of coarse then there was a patch to it.

Well yeah, MDK baseband, I never updated (cause I'm not stupid) and had that until I sold it and got the S5..missing an unlocked BL with AOSP stuff, but I can manage now that we have root and multiple sweet ROMs.

Ordered mine couple of days ago. Should be here by the end of the week!

I'm on a dev running TWRP. I love it.

Easiest way is power the phone off, take back cover off, remove battery. The sticker behind the battery will actually say dev edition.

I have the Dev Ed too. Beware - always remember to uncheck Reactivation Lock before going to TWRP. I'm stuck there now.

I positive this will be considered a stupid question but I'm curious as to why we can't dd an unlocked bootloader off a dev edition and flash it onto a non-dev edition. I know it's not possible, just curious as to why. Is it because the dev edition is a totally different phone so this signature doesn't match? Are we not sure which partition it's on?

I just called Samsung asking about a dev phone and they said it can do talk or text, is this true?

I'm sorry but this is utter garbage. If any of us had known this was the way things were going to play out we would have held out for this one in the first place. This is really just unbelievable. First we are led to believe our SG3 is going to be the same as the rest, only to find out we have a locked boot loader, now they dangle a $600 "developer" edition in front of us after most people interested in the developer aspect have already pre ordered the regular one? Am I the only one who is really ticked off about this?

I'm worried this will set us back. Why mess with locked if you can just buy unlocked? Except not all of us are gonna be able to just eBay ours to buy this, whenever its actually released. I'm hoping the devs don't abandon this project.
Well, I think developers would like to test out encrypting the bootloader, so it should DEFINITELY come with a tool to enable encryption of the bootloader. And it should also allow them to disable the encryption afterwards obviously... right?
Hopefully Samsung will do the right thing and leave a loophole for us.
I am slated to receive my SGS3 via FedEx tomorrow. I am currently a customer with Sprint, and I had planned to drop Sprint for Verizon upon activating this new phone. I am seriously having second thoughts now.
The biggest reason for choosing the SGS3 for me was because historically, Sammy hasn't restricted their devices by locking the bootloaders. I came from using two EVO devices (4G and 3D), which had increasingly difficult-to-crack bootloaders. Though I eventually achieved S-OFF with both devices, I wanted to support a company whose track record indicated community with developers, not antagonizing us.
I knew I wanted to drop Sprint, and I will never, ever consider AT&T again. So, I have my pick of two carriers to choose, and I chose Verizon based on their LTE network which is both new and fast in my area. I will probably hold my phone unopened and unactivated for a couple of days until I decide.

I don't think they will. I've been going back and forth with keeping the phone or taking my chances with Sprint. I just got the phone today and decided I'll keep it on Verizon.
I think that there aren't many people out there ready to shell out 600 bucks for a phone. After all, look at how many "unlocked" phones you can buy, but yet people still get the contract phones. I have to agree with the other posters about how if anything, it will help us out with the locked phones. Who knows, maybe it's as simple as using the odin tool to flash a backup of an unlocked phone....considering they are probably the same model numbers.

I know once I am due for an upgrade again samsung will be down low on my list right above moto if they do this and do not give those of us who bought it an option to unlock.

Developer Edition Verizon GSIII with Unlockable Bootloader

Like the title states, Samsung will be releasing a Verizon Developer Edition GSIII with Unlockable Bootloader. Thoughts? Comments? Curse words?
I mainly want to know, will this impact our data plan if we purchase this product.

This pisses me off even more than the bootloader being locked in the first place. Not only would I have to sell my normal S3, I'd have to wait for one of the developer ones, most likely with a tiny stock, to ship to me. I don't know how Samsung could possibly think this is a valid solution after the majority of people who want to hack their phone bought it when it came out.

I'm also slightly skeptical of this. I don't see this anywhere else but on some blogs. I can't find anything official from Samsung.
Hmm, according to CNet, Samsung sent this out as an email. That could be why there's no official release.

using something like dd to write every single partition to another device and basically "clone it" would then bypass the checks for certain software.

No, that wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular- I was more referring to the tons of support the model was getting in the IRC channel.
I don't understand it, because I seriously doubt it will help.
It's possible, but I'm really doubting it.
Regardless, unless it does prove as a method for allowing consumer-level devices to be unlocked, it is practically useless to almost all Galaxy S3 owners on Verizon.
I'm not bashing anyone, I'm just disgusted Samsung and/or Verizon would think this is an okay alternative.
Also, how about all that "unlocked devices will hurt the network" stuff from Verizon? I believe there's a bit of a contradiction here.
Edit: Just restating, no hard feelings towards you, shabbypenguin, or anyone else, it just blows my mind Samsung and Verizon would pull this.

One question though, assuming the locked version can be unlocked, does that mean development for both devices will be the same? Or is it possible that they will have to have separate development?

Haha! On a serious note, are you going to purchase this Developer Edition GSIII? I read the original article as I was waiting in line at Fed Ex to pick up my GSIII. I am seriously thinking of returning my GSIII and getting this.

I am Jealous of all of development for the international sgs3

I have already had the AT&T sgs3 but returned it because the user base is no were need Verizon's user base so I figured that we would ultimately have more roms kernels and themes. I am hoping that will still be the case. Either way I do not regret my decision because AT&T Lte is so tiny in comparison to Verizon lte when it comes to coverage.
Anyways back to the point of my thread.. the development for the international version of both the sgs2 and the sgs3 has always blown me away with the vast number of different roms, themes, and kernels! If anyone has every taken a peak over in the i9300 Dev forums they will know what I am talking about. Whenever I browse over there I find myself in a state of pure jealousy. The best of the best can be found there from roms like OMEGA to kernels like syliah kernel. I wish there was a way to easily port the international roms etc like entropy did for the AT&T sgs2 when he created the hellraiser packages which essentially swapped out the incompatible parts of a rom and replaced them with the compatible libs, modems etc that were meant for the AT&T sgs2. It would be nice if we could find with way to make it happen with our Verizon sgs3, not sure if that is possible though. Cross my fingers for this and definitely for an unlocked bootloader

I'm not sure why it is such a "big deal" exactly. What we have basically gives us the abilities of an unlocked bootloader (not 100% but exactly what we need development-wise) and all we have to deal with is a few short reboots on bootup. I'd say this is just fine even if we never get a true unlock.

Having a locked bootloader is still very much a big deal. It slows development if anything and reduces the possibility of seeing ROMs other than stock TouchWiz because developers who don't like TW have to go through the trouble of learning how to correctly make a boot.img that is compatible with kexec or else face the consequences. I just learned this the hard way by hard bricking my phone while trying to build a working boot.img for Sense 4.0.
Trust me, we want an unlocked bootloader...
I think we have a smaller user base because of the costs associated with Verizon. Let's face it, we all know Verizon is hell of expensive. We pay the highest price for one reason, the 4G is blazing fast and we always have a good signal.
Good bye HTC Rezound, hello Galaxy S3!

So if you return your gs4 due to the locked bootloader..

I mean I myself will wait until the last day to return it, and hope the bootloader issue has been solved. But what a shame, this device is nice. To hear the htc one already has cm10 is kinda of disappointing. So the question I ask what device will you get instead? Is it even worth it to get the international gs4 version?
I'm sticking with the GS4. I can live with the Disable option for now.
Also, I'm coming from a GSM Galaxy Nexus, so I'm already familiar with Samsung's hardware.

Time does not always mean a better ROM. Different developers pump out different stuff and once the bootloader is unlocked, the excitement will steamroll over to the GS4 development side. Guaranteed the GS4 has better custom roms at the end of the year :fingers-crossed:

If you have faith in what our awesome developers say, you should be as skeptical as they are about getting the bootloader unlocked. djrbliss tweeted yesterday that he doesn't think the bootloader can be cracked without a leak from Samsung. A few days ago, Entropy pointed out that since the S3, Samsung devices have gotten harder to crack, and they seem to be learning from their past mistakes and stepping up their bootloader security.
Still, AdamOutler is working on getting it unlocked, which is encouraging.
My point is, people shouldn't get their hopes up. If the bootloader is cracked(and I sincerely hope it happens), then great. But if it isn't, and you can't live without custom roms, then the AT&T S4 isn't the phone for you.

Time does not always mean a better ROM. Different developers pump out different stuff and once the bootloader is unlocked, the excitement will steamroll over to the GS4 development side. Guaranteed the GS4 has better custom roms at the end of the year :fingers-crossed:

It will all depend It is way to early to say which one will have better devs and roms but I do know a lot of good devs have picked up the HTC One and that mixed with the international version having the same hardware as AT&T will be HUGE! I think the big question will be with the HTC One camera on a CM build. if they can't get the drivers for the camera it may just be a 4 MP? Who knows. But Mr. Cyanogen himself has the One and other great devs. I hope for a quick unlock

Cool! Thanks for the informative post..
I am not really following any of this as I don't have any interest in custom ROM's.
I have not even rooted yet but may do so once we have a way to restore back to factory. I'm pretty simple these days (I was a chronic flasher in years past) but now I only consider root if I want to use Titanium and AdFree..
I know a lot of users want custom ROM's though so hopefully the bootloader can and will be cracked.

Personally right now I'm fine with a root and de-bloating. I do know it's possible to remove the root and return to stock if you need or want to return the phone because I had to. I just deleted the SU binary along with Busybox from system/xbin and the phone status went back to custom and lock on boot went away.

Yeah I am ok with that to but man the UI is so ugly... I hope to see some changes lol
As for the bootloader, the biggest problem is the number of potential developers. I'm not buying the device (full price) and a jtag just to test. And the fact that they're using an open source system is not encouraging..But let's see what happens! It does reaffirm my distain for ATT though.

Is this bootloader directly tied to the ability to Overclock? That is the only thing I care about. I find the stock rooted rom to be best on my s3 and my current s4. Just want some OC lol

Yes... No way to OC without a custom kernel or recovery to flash said kernel.

Trust me I do, but at the same time samsung needs to be sent a message on this. What a better way than to return their locked device. There are alot of unhappy campers here.

Yeah... a few thousand units being returned will surely make samsung cry when they're counting how many millions they've sold

No, AT&T will not notice. They don't make their money from device sales; they make their money from monthly bills. So, all those who returned their S4's for One's and didn't switch to a different carrier won't even get AT&T's attention.
Personally I'm just going to wait for the bootloader to be unlocked before I buy one, if it turns out that the bootloader is not unlockable I'll just buy a GS3.

Thanks for the info but you have not changed my mind on the matter. I'll wait as long as I can.

No S5 Root yet -- Frustration

Heyy ya'll, I am so frustrated!! I have bought the Verizon S5 with hopes to get it unlocked soon, but nothing is there!! This is so frustrating -- I signed up with verizon and pay $150/month for 6 gigz with all else unlimited, but the root is one thing that I was looking for. It is frustrating because I probably should've gotten myself a Sprint/Tmobile that was unrooted before even release and it is cheaper!! Ugh!!! By the time unlock happens, a new S series will come out!
Thanks for listening to me! I feel better

You bought a phone without root to begin with. I understand your frustrated but if you wanted a phone with root you should of done homework beforehand. if you wanted the S5 specifically with root, then you probably should switch carriers.
I'm not trying to be rude, its just this post really has no meaning. Your frustrations are just like many, but there is no reason to just start a post on it. Be like a lot of people and be patient. if its going to be rooted one day it will, if you really do not want to wait go an by a phone that is already rooted and not one hoping to eventually be rooted/unlocked because the fact it is just may not happen.
Should of got a developer edition phone...

Yeah i totally understand you're frustrating OP. I had the AT&T S5 worth no root and i sold it to get the Tmobile version and now im rooted. If that option wasnt available i would have bought another phone. Root is a must for me.

Don't take the advice of buying an M8...know 3 people that have it and my S5 still unrooted is better than theirs with ANY rom...just wait we will get there. The camera alone and battery life alone us worth it.

Yet there are others who have switched and love the M8. Each person is different and should make a decision they feel right with. Many folk are happy with the S5, even without root. For others the lack of root is a deal breaker.
I personally love my M8 as much as I did my S3. I didn't go for the S5 because of Knox and the locked bootloader. That's me though and I would not deign to denigrate anyone simply because their priorities are different than my own.

Men should only own black phones. White looks too girly
There are more than enough "no root" threads to air your frustration in...no need to create more threads
Thanks
