[Q] Power button not working - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

Hello all:
Today my power button has become nonresponsive. I've done nothing unusual with my phone but I do remember early in the morning it rather strangely vibrating 3 times while I was browsing something, and it wasn't a phone call nor an incoming text, and I'm wondering if that was a signifier of what was to come. In any event, the phone is functional otherwise, for I can still slide out the keyboard in order to wake the screen. However, I dare not let the battery completely run out, lest I not be able to turn it on anymore, and I can't do a reboot of the phone (or screen shot, for that matter) since the power + volume down button combo doesn't work; it just lowers my volume. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had that happen once - just pop the back cover off & re-seat it, make sure it aligns properly. See if that fixes it.

good advice.
before closing the back lid, try to push the button with your finger nails.
if you don't feel the click and just feel mushy, then you are screwed. I lost my camera button in that way from day 1 and I thought it's the way it is.
You have to expect a tactile feedback with every buttons.

Anyone elses power button being a pain in the ass?

I've found that after only 3 weeks of getting my Thunderbolt that the power/lock screen button has gotten harder and harder to press. I have to literally mash the damn thing down for it to react. Anyone else experiencing some of the same issues?
is your power button sunk in on one side ?

I haven't experienced this issue (yet) but I've heard of it happening to others. To make a few suggestions on how not to use the power button as much:
Download a widget that will reboot your phone from your home screen
Download a widget to shut down your phone
Set the screen timeout to a short length so that after inactive use for a short period, the screen will shut itself off
If you go this route, you should avoid having to use the power button as much.
i have had mine for like 2 months now and it is still really easy to press, yay for cases

If you're rooted, Quick Boot app from the Market does this, as well as permitting you to boot directly into Recovery.

Capacitive Touch Keys - whose the Idiot at Samsung who designed them?

Whatever engineer designed the timing of the lights on the capacitive touch keys on the Infuse ought to be fired twice. Once for the design and once for not having an option for an adjustable or always on setting when the screen is on.
There must be a way to make the <OPTION/HOME/PREV/SEARCH> bar to stay lit up. It is driving me absolutely nuts. It goes out in like 2 seconds after I have touched it. No idea why they did that. Stupid stupid stupid stupid design. 9 out of 10 times I hit the wrong key while in an app. It is so annoying.
I am really surprised no DEV has built a longer time option or even an always on option for those keys into a ROM. It's dumb design like that that makes me almost miss my iPhone.
From reading & searching it seems this doesn't bother too many people. I just can't understand why not.
I have tried "KEEP THE LIGHTS ON" app but it is pretty much useless on the Infuse.
there is an app called "keep the lights on" i havent tried it on the infuse but it works on some of the sgs phones.
edit: sorry didnt read the last line of the first post,
its not that hard to memorize 4 buttons, and if you touch the screen, the buttons or the volume rocker they come on.
Just tap the screen and they come back on.

As my OP says: "I have tried "KEEP THE LIGHTS ON" app but it is pretty much useless on the Infuse."
Memorizing them isn't the problem, it's hitting the wrong spot. For some people, with specific physical disabilities, it's not that easy.
Just a simple OPTION would resolve the issue. Still a stupid design. If the screen is lit why shouldn't those keys be lit. The amount of power that backlight draws is probably negligible.

Not always depending on what is happening on the screen and sometimes tapping the screen causes problems with the app that is running.

Unfortunately for some people there are things that prevent some of the simple things in life that others take for granted from being simple tasks.
They aren't that hard to see with the lights off...My phone is about 5 feet away from me and I can still see the home keys just fine.

like i said, i missed that you tried keep the lights on, and yeah there is no reason the lights shouldnt be on all the time. its just something to deal with. sorry

it is timing, not sure if iti is in services.jar or framework or the kernel. nobody has ever seemed interested in addressing this outside of the keep the lights on app, not sure why.
Let me just say, I am truly pleased that it is not a problem for those of you who replied how easy it is for you, but for those of us that it is a problem it remains a problem.

I hear you. This is one of the few things I don't like about this device. Most of the time it's not an issue, but in low light or darkness it's a bit of a pain trying to locate the right button to press.
"Keep The Lights On" app works fine for me
I just installed the "Keep the Lights On" app, and it works flawlessly. The bottom menu buttons stay on as long as the screen stays on.
Question: When you installed the app, did you add it as a widget, and then enable it? You need root access for this app to work.
I am using Infused 1.5.3, so, not sure if that makes a difference or not.
Edit: Just an FYI, I am using the free version. I would use the pro version, but I'll probably just end up uninstalling this app .

Yes, I installed it as a widget and I do have root access. I am also running Infused 1.53. What kernel are you running? Maybe that is the difference?
It did work for the first few minutes I had it installed than eventually it started getting weird. Sometimes it would work in reverse, most of the time it wouldn't work at all, sometimes it would never shut off (which was OK with me). I contacted the DEV and he said it wasn't compatible with the Infuse and that would be the behavior he would expect.
I think if you use it for a while you'll see what I mean.
Edit: Just uninstalled/reinstalled. First time phone wakes up it works. Once it "sleeps" then wakes up lights NEVER come back on. If I turn widget off/on the same thing recycles. Works once than fails.
I've got to agree with the OP. Since we don't have a nice physical home button, it would be nice to get this thing lit up so we can see. I'm always in a dark environment and I keep hitting the 'back' instead of the 'home' key.
While we're at it, I like to know who the genius is that decided the location of the power button. It's almost impossible to push the button without squeezing the volume buttons. If they come out with a Infuse2 with the power button on the top, I'll switch in a second.

These sorts of issues (both the OP and the power button placement) are easily avoided if you actually go to a store and play with a phone instead of ordering online.
While I do agree that those two issues could have been handled better, I also understand that we're never going to get a perfect phone. So you live with what you like best.

New issue? On/Off button seam to "flicker"?

Hey ya all
Ive tried to google for this issue but haven't found anything. I got it yesterday evening, about 1-2 hours after OTA update to 2.3.4.
So what happens is when I hit the on/off button to turn of the screen, it sometimes goes black for about half a second and then turns back on. Same when I try to wake it, goes light and then goes dark. So it seams like a dubbleclick almost.
Sometimes I've also got the issue that my Home button just keeps making screen shots, took me a while to figure out thats conected to the power button. How am I supposed to take a screenshot? Could it be a simple hardware issue where the button gets stuck? I've tried to remove the backcover and clean up, but it all seams fine for my untrained eye.
How are you holding the phone when this happens? This same thing happens to me sometimes if I kind of wrap my hand around it when I pick it up. I unconsciously hit the volume button like half a second before I hit the power button, and the volume button wakes the phone & then the power button turns it right back off.
It can happen whatever way Im holding it im afraid, and it has only occured since last night. Lets see if someone else got this after 2.3.4 or if its just a wierd coincidence.
And also, as I said, it seam to bug out my screenshot function.
That's not a coincidence, happens to me as well.
My guess is that's because of the new screenshot feature (hold Power+Home). Can anyone hazard a guess as to how to turn it off?
Well, guess it's a good thing it aint then, hopefully it'll get fixed.
No one else with this issue? It anoyys me alot
I have this issue, but it only happens if I press the button too fast or something. I don't know how to explain.
happens to me too
Randomly enough, just tried the screenshot function and it said saved to Camera folder but it's not there. What app is used to take it? Someone said it was MySketcher but I don't know
I spoke to HTC support sweden today and they didnt seam to be aware of this issue atleast. Keeps happening to me about 30% of the times i hit the button.. I dont think its hardware issue but didnt care to factory reset the phone yet.. Anyone of you with the issue has other than stock rom? Did it only happen after you upgraded to latest firmware? Ive only had it since 2.3.4.
I'm getting this exact same issue since upgrading to 2.3.4. I have a stock ROM too. It's really annoying, press the on/off button and it doesnt always turn it off, it does exactly the same as what the op says.
Also getting it take screen shots when I press the home button.

Was abit tricky to understand you, well anyway, so you had it repaired then? Id love to avoid that, hate being without the phone. But maybe thats the only solution.
Thanks for your input.
Yea I'm not so sure if this is a software thing. I haven't experienced this during regular use, but I have experienced a double-press effect while in Clockwork Mod. If I press the button on the leftmost part and do it slowly, I can get a double click without actually clicking it twice. Scares the crap out of me when I'm flashing roms and kernels.
So maybe something is up with the power button itself? Too sensitive maybe?
same issue here, was afraid it was my button. first i thought it was crt animations that were causting it. i have to go in to build.prop and turn off power+home screen shots because half the time i hit home it take a screenshot. not sure what's up with the power button.
have the issue on both bulletproof and eaglesblood, both 2.3.4
Happens to me as well and drives me absolutely insane.. The problem is definitely hardware.. I got a replacement back cover under warranty and after two weeks the problem is back just as bad.
To somewhat remedy the screen off/on flicker, i use 'screen off and lock' for long press of search button.. Not the same I know, but at least it doesn't flicker back on.
As for recovery, you can use home/menu for up/down, back for back and search for select.. I find this light years easier than having to ninja push the power button to avoid a double press.
I wish there was some way to fix the damn button tho.. I don't understand how HTC screwed it up so bad.

Having the same problem. Is the problem with the back cover or the phone itself? I looked at the button underneath the case and it looks bent. I was thinking maybe a tiny piece of paper inside would help, if it does, I'll report back
EDIT: playing with the button with the case off shows no problem. It has to be the way the case interacts with the button
EDIT 2: A piece of paper doesn't completely relieve the problem but does make it much harder to reproduce, and in my opinion, it's much nicer to press now
EDIT 3: Thicker paper=issue solved. I'll send HTC an email about it not reaching the button all the way, maybe they can do a recall on affected backings

I ripped off a little piece of paper from a paper cd case about the width of the button inside, I then folded it until I found the perfect thickness and set it on top. I just carefully put the backing back on. It pushes the power button up about double what it was. I'd take pics but all it is is a piece of paper sitting on top XD

HTC One X - Home Screen/Restart Issues

First off, apologies if these have been covered. I tried searching and couldn't find anything the same as what I am getting but it may be that it is buried in another thread.
Couple of issues with the One X
LOCK SCREEN RESTART
Most people will probably know already that holding the power button for long enough on the Lock Screen will restart the phone. To me, this is ridiculous. Having no kind of confirmation screen means that the phone is constantly restarting in my pocket as it presses against my leg.
Is there any way to disable this function?
HOME SCREEN NOT SAVING
I add the bookmarks widget to a home screen. It stays there nicely until my phone is restarted (usually due to the issue above). When the phone comes back on the widget is gone and an app (a different one each time) has been added instead.
Anyone else having this issue or know what may be causing it?
Again, sorry if these have been covered and thanks in advance for your help.
Haven't noticed the widget issue, but I don't use rhe bookmarks widget so maybe its specific to that particular widget.
But there have been a couple of times where I've had my phone in my pocket and pulled it out only to have it be turned off. Not sure why considering holding down the lock button on the lock screen is supposed to restart the phone, not turn it off completely.

1) get a case that either partially covers the power button or covers it completely but making it harder to press.
2) get a belt pouch
In either cases your phone will only benefit and may last longer
I personally use horizontal belt pouch and have access to the phone in any position I may be in without awkwardly stretching or leaning, well, unless I'm laying on left side...no issues with pressing buttons ever.
Hi all ,ive resurected this thread to see if anyone has found a way to stop the restart button from working when the phone is locked as its becoming a real pain, ive searched but not found anything....
bump, any ideas anyone, surely just software ? ....
I secomd that.
I've had the same problem from the start. The One X is too easy to unlock. I got some relief with Widget Locker by allowing me to disable the notification bar as a method of unlocking but I still get regular restarts when phone in my pocket and press against power button. Restart should be restricted to an unlocked screen...just like my original HTC Desire. Why do some phone features go backwards?

The restart feature is there to force the phone to restart should it become unresponsive. It's a handy feature to have, it's essential, it's not backwards. Buy a case that limits your access to the power button and hey presto, problem solved.

Yeah If the phone froze on the lockscreen and the power button didn't work when the phone was locked there would be absolutely no way to recover it since it doesn't have a removable battery. The only solution is buy a case the makes the button harder to press or don't carry it in your pocket.

Okay got the picture......reluctantly I will need to buy a case..........Can I make a suggestion for future HTC models.....have a reset button in the form of a tiny hole-identical to the SIM eject hole but obvious on another side of the phone so as not to get them mixed up. This will satisfy everyone.
That's a great suggestion, but I highly doubt it will ever be implemented by HTC. They save money on manufacturing by having the power button doing this operation.

Actually after about a week of usage, it worked itself out and was fine. Haven't had a problem since, so I'd say just give it time and see if the problem resolves itself like mine.
Not sure if you've made the choice to unlock/root yet, but if you have, I'd highly suggest installing a kernel w/ sweep or tap to wake features. Additionally, it's (in my opinion, of course) a good habit to utilize a widget or toggle that will turn your screen off w/ a tap as well.
Obviously, if you determine you've got a manufacturer defect w/ the power button, by all means replace it. But the less dependent you are on the hard buttons, the less wear & tear on them. More often than not, these buttons are the first to go the longer you have your phone.

Mine seems to have sorted itself out too. The button doesn't seem to have that satisfying click my Nexus 4 did.
Glad your power button got sorted out. Being a new phone, I would probably send it back, rather than crack it open, but that's me.
On another note... Personally, I haven't touched my power button in a long time. I use "Gravity Screen," which shuts my phone off when I put my N5 in my pocket and turns it on when I pull it out, It also senses the micro-movements of my hands when I'm using it, and prevents the screen from timing out, If I set it down on a table, and it shuts off (due to timeout), I only have to wave my hand over it to turn it back on.
This app literally changed the way I use my phone, which is why I sprung for the $2 (ish) pro version, rather than the free one I linked. I highly recommend checking it out.
I RMA'd my 32GB White because of this as well as a vibration issue.
Sent from my Nexus 5
After 3 RMAs (= 4 different N5s) I stuck with the last phone and fixed the (loose) power button myself because I was fed up with the quality.
It is really no problem opening a phone, especially if you have done it with a PC before.
