THIS IS FOR UNBRANDED 401 PHONES ONLY! IT MIGHT WORK FOR OTHERS BUT I WOULD RATHER NOT TRY...
Update 2011/08/14
Added more information and details
Renamed thread into GUIDE
Using this guide will reset your device into a vanilla 2.3.4 HTC Sensation phone. Your SD-Card wont be touched and you will have S-OFF and root. This will lock your bootloader but that should not be a problem since you are still S-OFF and can flash whatever you want - except the bootloader. I tested these steps and i have a 2.3.4 401 Sensation with Locked HBOOT, S-OFF and root.
If you want S-OFF & ROOT on the latest HTC 2.3.4 ROM follow the steps:
1) Backup
2) Get S-OFF on 2.3.3 (Guide Thread)
3) Recover your phone with original 2.3.3 Update
http://www.filefactory.com/file/cc03797/n/RUU_Pyramid_HTC_Europe_1.35.401.1_Radio_10.43a.900 7.00U_10.51.9007.27_M3_release_198179_signed.exe
4) Update to 2.3.4 via "Over The Air" (OTA) or using OpenRecovery (OR). I did not use the OR-Method but you can find a lot of information about here. I do not advertise any guides for the OR-method since i did not test them myself.
4) Execute step 2.1 to 2.6 from the Sensation Guide (Guide Thread)
5) Get root again: Sensation Guide 3.1 to 3.12 (Guide Thread)
Have fun!

How? Can some please explain step by step?
Thanks
anyone have a change log? google failed me for once in my life
The 2.3.4 update include an new hboot Version 1.18...
Are u sure that u can install cwm and root the phone again after applying the update?
I think u will be s-on again after the hboot get changed...
Everything I'm reading (the two other threads about this update) says the above method will NOT work. I don't think the OP even tried. Wait for a real dev to cook this up.

Oh boy Some of use knew this was gonna happen
do not flash this to a stock rooted rom - it will **** it up - wait for your favourite dev to update their rom
flashing this will give you the new locked htc bootloader and you will not be s-off anymore (even though it still says you are)
it's taken me nearly 3 hours to get back to normal

Hi all,
I've just done this update
Backup with Titanium
Reflash with 2.3.3 stock ROM (my Sensation was already S-Off)
OTA update to 2.3.4
ClockWork Recovery
Root
Restore with Titanium
Reboot and that's it
No OTA
I did exactly like shown in the first post, but i wont get the update ota. It sais that my phone is actually actual.
Could I have done something wrong?
Got the Sensation from T-mobile -> debrandet it like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193033
And used the RUU version from the first post.
Thanks
done as suggested - works fine for me!
I was off this weekend.
I posted this howto cause i did it with my phone. Whyever would i post a guide when it does not work?!
Using this guide will lock your bootloader but that should not be a problem since you are still S-OFF and can flash whatever you want - except the bootloader.
At least thats the case for me.

no - i did not try to.
I am pretty happy with my phone right now. Fast and long battery pack - replaced Sense with LP.
When testing the early (pre-soff) custom roms and test recoverys I had to flash stock RUUs a couple of times.
To get the phone back into a decent state I needed to pg58 flash eng&unsecured boot then root and fastboot recovery.
Can't for the life of me think why anyone would s-off their phone then install stock/ota for any reason (bar repair). It's like buying a track day race car, shouting "look what I've got" then pushing it around rather than thrashing it.

If you just flash the new hboot, it will say lock at the top of the bootloader screen. But you should be able to flash eng hboot, cause I just tried it.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I removed the hboot from the OTA before flashing it so couldn't confirm for myself. There's been a lot of conflicting information about whether phones are still S-OFF after running the unmodified OTA but it appears that they are. I only ran the RUU then OTA so I could have a backup of a stock 1.45 system.img.

Np, i was trying to figure out how to flash pg2fs_spcustom.img and I found out that the only way to do it was to flash the new hboot first than it would read that pg2fs img.

It seems OTA is of no use for Rooted Phone.
Where do i download and upgrade to 2.3.5 + HTC Sense 3.0 ? (manually)

Just change your hboot to 0.98.2000 and the update will be fine.
The more safe way is to flash an older RUU to go back to stock and then update OTA

I downgraded my HBOOT-0.98.2000 (PG8810000) using the sticky link. OTA still doesnt work. Stucks at a white screen with Droid near a Warning Triangle!
I had HTC Desire S 2.3.3 Sense 2.1. Rooted + SOFF using Revolutionary method. I've read almost all post on Unrooting / S-on . The main post itself has been removed and 100s of post following with people trying random stuff.
Any suggestions?

I didn't know that you have already applied the OTA
Since you have the 0.98.2000 hboot download this RUU (which is for Asia-India and I suppose that is your version) and run it on your PC with USB connected phone. This should give you the previous version and complete Stock/S-ON. Then check for OTA update from the settings.
If the RUU says that your current version is higher and cannot proceed, you should have to flash a custom recovery (download and extract this zip file) flash extracted recovery.img from fastboot:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery {path to file}/recovery.img
, reboot to recovery, get root access through adb shell and use the misc_version from this thread (point 1) to change your version to 1.47.720.1. Then the RUU will work.
If you have troubles post back I will describe step by step what to do.
And remember - do not pull the battery in any case!
It worked!
The software version was already 1.47.720.1
Everything went perfect and smooth. You rock mate!
Applied OTA, and now i'm back on stock 2.3.5.
I realized HBOOT 2.00.0002 is not supported by Revolutionary for S-OFF and Rooting. Any other way? or if i want to have root I need to flash back to 2.3.3 stock revolutionary root and then install available pre-rooted stock rom?
Nice to know that you managed.
If you need root you can unlock your new 2.00.0002 hboot on htcdev.com I think there is a guide in the forum, search for it.

Hey please relax
HTC is pushing the update to a limited number of devices daily to avoid overloading of their server. Keep checking and you will receive it it the next couple of days.
The other possibility is that you version is older. Check it from your phone settings, if it is different that 1.47.720.1 you should use the RUU linked in post #4 and then you will receive the OTA. Keep in mind that the RUU will delete your data so make a Google backup.
Also if you phone is S-OFFed with Revolutionary you will have to change the hboot (see posts above).
Good luck

Hey Un Lock via HTC Site worked. I can see Unlocked in Bootloader.
On trying to Flash using AndroidFlasher nothing happens!
I downloaded all those given in links. Started flashing utility. It gave the following message

sending 'recovery' (4336 KB)...

and phone got stuck at HTC White Screen with Green Logo for 20 minutes. Then i removed battery and restart Phone. Checked its still S-ON + Not Rooted. Phone is working as well.
Repeated second time. almost same message. Again stuck at white screen. still S-ON.
I have posted this on original thread as well. Hoping for a quick reply

Hi
I did formatted my card. btw Method pops-up an error message on windows : "Device is S-ON" if i run from windows (ir reboots in bootloader).
It shows no error if i boot into bootloader before starting the flashing utility.
Nevertheless No result. Device is still S-ON. and When i try to go to recovery, Phone gets stuck at white screen. Does that mean it has flashed recovery and the recovery is not supported kinda (maybe old). Maybe thats why It was going to white screen after flash and going again if i manually choose recovery from bootloader.

The device will remain S-ON. With HTC unlock you are able to flash recovery, kernel and even custom ROM. S-ON means that you cannot flash hboot and radio, but I do not think that you will need this in the near future (your hboot and radio are now the latest after the OTA)
Maybe you are on the right direction thinking that the recovery may be incompatible. So try this one - it is for Desire S. Extract the image and flash with Android Flasher
That did not work as well! Same getting stuck at white screen.
Then I gave a shot to CWM Recovery http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager Took the desire s one an VOILA!!! It worked in a second. Weird!
Anyways its S-ON + Rooted now.
1 quick (probably last), If i can do almost everything from Custom ROM etc, means I can now install TITANIUM Backup and get all my previous apps from backup right? No issues at all
I'd only need S-OFF to change HBOOT + Radio (I dont care). If i need to in future, I hope thats easy as well, right?
Your signature terrifies me about Sudden Death for Devices which were never S-OFFed! >.<

Now you can use everything that requires root without a problem. Just remember if you want to install a Custom ROM you should flash the kernel separately.
About changing HBOOT and RADIO there is a downgrade guide here that can give you S-OFF back when you need it in future.
And about my signature - the most Desire S are dying when pulling out the battery, so keep that in mind and you will be fine.

Hi All,
I have a Telstra one xl with the OTA update (ie hboot 2.14)
I unlocked the bootloader using HTCdev.
Installled TWRP
Installed CM10.1 nightly (from a night ago)
Now because I have the most recent touch screen firmware the screen doesn't work in non sense ROM's
So I tried loading the following Sense ROMs:
Telstra_Stock_1.89.841.9.zip
OTA_EVITA_UL_JB_45_S_Telstra_WWE_3.17.841.2_0.23a.32.09.29_10.128.32.34a_release_2997538hizl4svcm80o4g1.zip
CleanROM 6 R2.zip
radavs-pablo11-TelstraJB-stock.zip
ViperX3.4.0.zip
But it always fails.
So I tried using the RUU (1.89 or 1.81) and that fails as well
So I tried using the RUU method to flash the OTA update (the one above) and that also fails.
I am assuming this is because I am S-ON and HBOOT 2.14...
I can load up CM10.1, but the touch screen doesn't work, which means I cant get into a ROM to SOFF and downgrade the HBOOT to flash the TP firmware...
Suggestions/Ideas?
Regards
D
I had an idea.
Is there a way to enable USB debugging in the ROM ZIP?
That way I can flash up CM10.1 with USB debugging already enabled... So I dont need the touch screen...
Then I can do all the normal ADB stuff...
So in the zip, what file do i need to modify to have USB debugging enabled from boot?

One thing I noticed is that you tried to install viperx3.4.0.zip which is an international rom made for the quad core onex and not the dual one x like you have. Im sure team viper has implemented some form of protection to keep you from flashing the wrong version of the rom on the wrong phone.
yeah I realised that mistake, and got the ViperXL-3.2.6 ROM - which is for the XL...
That installs ok, but just goes into a boot loop - ie white htc screen, viperxl screen, viper animated graphic, reboot .... ...
By flashing CM10.1, you have an AOSP kernel. You can't run Sense roms on top of that. Flash the stock Sense kernel or one of the custom Sense kernels.
Once you do, that, you should be able to boot up. Then you can s-off an downgrade your touchscreen firmware.
im not entirely sure how todo that...
is the kernel the boot.img?
edit - seems like it is. So I have flashed the boot.img inside ViperXL.. Reinstalling Viper now.
hopefully I get a usable phone - lol
yay - its working!!!
boot.img from the viperxl zip gave me a working phone
supercid let me s-off
s-off let me downgrade the touch panel firmware
just flashing up CM10.1 now...

There are multiple threads in the development section explaining what you need to know, though I have real doubts any of the links are still working for firmware files after all these years.
Be very careful what you're doing as there are different One X models and flashing the wrong stuff can hard brick your phone with no hope of recovering it.

First thing, you update your phone with SuperCID and OTA, you get a bricked device.
Next, Remove your supercid, change it to original..
Relock your bootloader.
And try to update again.

if yes, place recovery.img there.

Try flashing my recovery by direct command.
That small update is for some battery improvements from T-Mobile. Maybe it does make a difference. but not critical. I can achieve high battery times with custom kernels. Maybe you have tried them.

No, if i boot to recovery from bootloader, i know red triangle is normal.
But i downloaded 3.14.531.17 OTA.zip, then i choose install now, it is automatically boot in to recovery, green progress bar run perhaps 20%, then stop and red triangle appear.

Have you tried this?
Go to Fastboot, enter this code:
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
Then when you see the HTC logo.
Code:
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
first time it might fail. Do it second time and it will progress. 3 4 tries are normal
EDIT: Wait. Is that an OTA.zip? that's a whole ROM not firmware.

Yeah, okay to flash with CID other than SuperCID. With SuperCID it bricks the phone when you do an OTA update.
Bud, maybe try RUU, go full stock and then get this small update OTA. That will solve all the hassle.

I dont need get RUU then get small update OTA, i get lastest RUU which after run it, dont need get any OTA update.
From now, if Tmobile or HTC release any OTA update, i am going to download newest RUU and run it instead of get update via OTA, that is so tired and waste time.
I found this mod for other htc one variants and tested on my one s.... it works great. Just flash zip in recovery and follow instructions

Does it work on all HBOOT versions?
I'm on hboot 2.15.0000 and it worked. But you have to be s-off and have the latest twrp recovery
Also if anyone wishes to remove the red text from splash boot pic here is the link for that too.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777223
Follow instructions and also when entering the custom hboot use entire path to where its located on your computer

Tried it on hboot 2.16. Doesn't work for removing the red text. Changing the splash screen does work.
