Guys, let's also not forget that XDA has new rules.
I have no idea who this guy is and absolutely DO NOT support kanging, but I certainly do support Open Source and Sharing.
XDA rules used to be straight forward as this - A DEV posts say.. a ROM, a tweak, MOD, etc..
No one is able to use it UNLESS the DEV gives that person 100% permission.
NOW.. since the Team Venom/Sergio and what happened was this.
Was a bit ago so stay with me.
Team Venom was Team PKMN, if anyone remembers..
Anyway, what happened, was their ROM/Tweaks app, hub, all that was kanged to the fullest degree of kanging.
If you know smali, for a tweak, you need say a "Method" you can name this whatever you want so when you go back into that app you can easily find your new method for the tweak, so let's suse the Tweak: Wake on Volume..
for example here was Team Venoms code:
Code:
.method private [COLOR="Red"]TeamVenom[/COLOR]WakeOnVolTweak(Landroid/view/MotionEvent;)V
and then in Sergios Tweak app he would change to:
Code:
.method private [COLOR="Red"]Sergio[/COLOR]WakeOnVolTweak(Landroid/view/MotionEvent;)V
this is one small example of kanging, cos after the method comes the coding.. and for certain MODs their are different ways to accomplish the same thing. But when sh*t hit the fan XDA reviewed the app and from my memory, it wasa 99% kang... the only thing that he did was simple change TeamVenom strings (a string is just a line of code) to Sergio.
Not only did he do this, Team Venom provides their ROMs for free (except for their new donation for the tweaks app - just to stop the 5 seconds when entering the app, you still get all the goodies without paying) anyway, Sergio added his kanged tweaks app to the Market making it possible for basically ALL ROM DEVs to download this Tweaks app BUT HE ALSO MADE A LOT OF MONEY OFF THEIR WORK!!! and then smali code all the tweaks into their ROM, which would be SO easy because since it's Team Venoms tweaks app you simply compare the applications and the exact code will work because all the code is the same only the method name is changed and that is just for convince to find what you're looking for.
Ok, so after a very long time (XDA had to go through EVERYTHING, threads from multiple phones and phones carriers, then all the posts within, and then all the PM on XDA!, it took some time..), XDA decided that Sergio was a complete kang, and not only banned him, his Tweaks kang app, gave any ROM Dev a chance to remove it from their ROMs or it would be deleted, and possible infractions.
Then, XDA had to do something/
So rant over, here is the point - skip to here if you don't care to read the above.
So, now, if you post a ROM, MOD, Tweak, etc.. to XDA, and you allow JUST 1 person to use it, it is FREE game for ALL to use without asking permission (although that is kinda d*ck move, you should still ask, even if they say no you can still use it..).
For example:
old XDA rules: ROM gets posted, no one can take a thing from it. The ROM Dev allows a buddy to use a tweak from his ROM, but NO ONE else - this was 100% within the rules and fine..
NEW rules: ROM gets posted, no one can take a thing from it - UNTIL the Dev allows someone to use a tweak from it or literally anything. (I may have to double check this part..) but if ANYTHING is shared from the ROM to someone else, it's free game for the rest, very tough, as now no one shares really anything because if they share, then someone they don't like will be able to use it..
I have to double check, to find out if say, if ANYTHING is shared from the ROM, ANYTHING else can be used from it, or just that specific thing that was shared.
The rules are a bit tough now, and I do agree with allowing EVERYONE to use the fix if it's shared publicly, otherwise it's just playing games and Devs fighting, we have enough of that!
The XDA user in question, had been ban some time ago.
We'll leave it at that as we do not discuss ban users, out of respect for their privacy
Thread closed,
Thank you

I think that's why too. I don't think XDA wants to link to other devs. That's what that ROM looked like. However I'm flashing to it right now, and after browsing their website for a while it looks pretty safe. They seem more experienced than most devs on XDA and this ROM is available for many devices so it should be pretty stable.
Its Becquerel they include warez in the ROM which are a know issue with UD rom's. These types are prohibited in XDA. Got this info from option94 in the other thread.

im all about CM7 right now, but listening to you im gonna try this Kanged out ROM.. if your lying to me your FIRED!!!! lol
you got me running a nandroid backup of my CM7 just to try this out.
Honestly after trying to ROM for about 20 mins, i can only say not bad at all.
I'm sure a lot of ppl here would really like the ROM. i say they should let him post the ROM, its no different from what Jaywan was doing. But its a better Kang job than what Jay would do.
He is giving proper credit now. or atleast i did see Cyanogens name there.
went back to CM7 myself, but its a pretty fast stable ROM. Great Bootanimation also

yea i went back to CM7 im on the Current Nightly and its running really smooth. Battery Life is Great!
Try it out, i haven't tried RoyalThunder yet, because i personally thing Vanilla Android always gives u better battery life than Sence based ROM, but thats just my personal opinion.
So who are the developers that are going to be developing for the Samsung Nexus S 4G (D720)? I figured this is a question everyone has been wondering. Im very excited to get started with my Nexus S 4G! (Previously came from the HTC Evo and there were alot of dedicated dev., Hope to see the same here)
P.S I didnt put this in the Q&A Because this is a direct question to the developers in this section about the current ROM's Available. Please don't be upset : )
I hope netarchy puts up a rom with his liquid smooth touches. His evo rom + kernel was ILL.
The thing is, the nexus s and ns4g are dev phones, bare bone AOSP, so a custom rom is just gunna be "themed" a bit and/or the real "improvements" are in the Kernel or any additional apps the dev has created.
I would love to see a bunch of ports make their way over. I would imagine that a dev phone would be one of the easiest to port/build for (easy for a dev, not the average human )
in a way, we all are.. who is to say that someone has to be a "dev" to make something, or find out what may fix something? on the heroc we had hundreds of users sitting in an irc room helping each other trying to figure out why things didnt work and what would happen if we pressed this button 7 times instead of 4..
so in short grab some code and lets start working my repo is synced and already compiled im working with the rest of the ACS team to see if we cant bring some lovins on over from the epic/evo
trying to come up with a good name for the rom >.>
Well, its very time consuming. I did alot of theming in the past, then wrote a few apps for WebOS, but just don't seem to have the time anymore with fulltime work, college, etc.
You are right tho, anyone can learn and the nexus line are a great place to start, simple and not complicated. Come on young high-school minds with oodles of time! Make ur name known! Lol
Really tho, I wish I could contribute more

This number one thing to do is get ur pc ready with the right software and drivers (there are a couple applications for compiling/decompiling and signing, not just what u use for root)
There's a thread around here about theming for the epic. It has a nice intro to the basic setup ull need, just be sure to replace anything epic with sns, u can then move on to ROMs once u understand what composes a ROM. When I'm back at my PC I could probably hook u up w a good place to start, but right now I'm out and about after this heathen Bulls game! Woot woot!

If I may suggest, Epic 4G is just about the same as the NS4G. From what I hear they got our stock to work on Epic just after I posted this.
I know they have the CM7 half way ported on Epic as well as the obvious stock with the TouchWiz interface for whoever likes that stuff I figured this would be the easiest place to start.
stop spamming this, its not going to work, for the same reasons why i explained in your thread about it
It probably will work as much as flashing a Droid ROM onto a Milestone...same hardware...epic fail.
more so then that all they currently have is a .32 cm7 kernel a semi working .35 cm7 kernel and their stock .32 touchwiz kernel.. we only have .35 stock kernel, even if you could get past the bootloops good luck trying to make a phone call or get crap to stop force closing
Spamming? Chill out man. I'm just trying to help.

What is the best vanilla rom and what is the best modified sense rom?
I want it to be light (uses a low amount of ram) and more stable/fast than the stock rom that gets shipped with your AT&T HTC One X... with better battery life.
Thanks,

This post is not going to be received well, FYI, but before they lock you down : I'm really enjoying CleanRom Lite. It's definitely more responsive than stock. It's Sense-based. Very stable (based on my experience, more stable than stock even).
I don't think any of them right now are going to affect battery life in any appreciable way.
There is no "best" ROM. The best one, is the one that fit your wants and needs, and those are not the same from person to person.
Also, just browse the forum or do a search. There are already lots of other threads like this.

There's no one answer because roms perform differently on different phones depending on usage and individual configurations. 500 people may love one rom to death, but you may find it doesn't work so hot on your phone. You have to test them out and see what's best for you.
Read the ROM threads, find one that you think looks good to you, flash it. Only way to find out.

This all comes down to personal preference so you'll have to go through and see what works for you, each ROM has pros/cons. I've tried 3 myself and I found that the Nocturnal SE 1.7 gives me a good speed boost and battery life, I'm getting about 22-28hrs total with ~3hrs screen time at 50% brightness.
Thanks guys, I know the rules of the forum very well.. the point of it was to see which one uses the least amount of ram and get some feedback at the same time. I was a HD2 owner for 2 years and was involved in the HD2 forums for as long as I have owned the phone.I just got the the HOX and wanted to get something on it quick..
I don't see a point of injecting every single rom into my phone just to find out which one uses the least amount of ram when I can start a thread and and find out that way and at the same time get some feedback..that is the whole point of a forum like this..to communicate with others that have similar devices and can help you out.. I've checked out the pages for almost every rom but I haven't seen one that clearly states how much ram it uses for example 341 MB/1000MB...

I didn't really mean it like that, not trying to detract from the hard work that Wildchild puts in. I'm sure it's an awesome ROM and I'm sure he works very hard on it. I just can't find any information on it, even on his own site. After a fair amount of searching, I have no clue what features it has, what kind of tweaks have been made, if it's been themed at all, or just how it differs from the stock ROM. I have seen lots of people mention his ROMs and how awesome they are, so I'm quite curious and would love to check it out but no way am I flashing a ROM that I know quite literally nothing about.

Basically his regular ROM is a tweaked stock ROM and retains all of the stock look with a nice increase in speed. The modded ROMs he releases are more themed and stuff. And it will have a tweaks app built for his ROM that will allow all kinds of customizations. Kind of similar to what's in the xi40 ROM. I used his modded ROM on my Vivid and it was rock solid. I would definitely give it a try, they are very solid ROMs. I saw you posting over there earlier.
On recent HTC phones, the /system partition is read only. Write protection is in effect and any changes made will not stick after reboot.
UPDATE: system write protection is now seen on ICS as well (one VX, solved with module)
UPDATE 2: Wow, this has been going on for a while and affects many devices. Now solved on the Desire X: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136815
UPDATE 3: if you try to load wp_mod.ko on a custom kernel that doesn't have write protection, it may crash immediately. This is because the module is trying to change something in kernel memory that doesn't exist. This is fixed on my kernels, if you use someone else's kernels and this is a problem, ask the dev to contact me.
UPDATE 4: Had to take a slightly different approach with the new HTC One, the original module didn't work.
The stock kernel is configured with this new option:
CONFIG_MMC_MUST_PREVENT_WP_VIOLATION
This is the problem, and it's in the kernel. It affects new HTC phones (currently Droid DNA, EVO 4G LTE, One XL, One S, Desire X, One VX, One and others)
Once the kernel source code is released, it is a simple matter of unsetting this option in a custom kernel (confirmed on the Droid DNA)
In the meantime, I've created a kernel module that disables /system write protection. This is confirmed working on the One XL, One S, and EVO LTE with kernel version 3.4.10. The module also works for the One VX, but required porting to work with kernel version 3.0.21.
Download the module: http://goo.gl/tzzoA
Notes and Instructions:
The module requires no parameters, it just needs to be inserted when the system boots.
This can be done using an init script or added to init.rc in the boot.img
For example, if the module is located in /system/lib/modules, it can be inserted with the following command (as root):
insmod /system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko
Devs are free to include this in their ROMs, please credit me and link here.
Maybe even hit the Thanks button if you benefit from this...
If you really like it, buy me a beer

I'm going to say this is due to the 3.4.x kernel that shipped with our JB ROM. They probably all use the same bit of code for the wp, we don't have source for ours yet

That's what I'm saying
Look in /proc/config.gz while running in stock kernel
We need to find how/where partitions are designated wp so this kernel function doesn't prevent write access.
When we get the kernel source, it might be ad easy as unchecking the config option before compile. The DNA devs can test this theory now.

I was looking around this site https://www.codeaurora.org/gitweb/quic/le/?p=kernel/lk.git;a=log;h=refs/tags/M8660AAABQNLYA1075 for any info. I saw the log about them adding write protection to eMMC partitions, but other than that, I don't think it's much help

I'm not sure if this affects the X+
The Droid DNA probably has this problem, since I found this in the DNA kernel source. Maybe somebody with the DNA could fill us in?

Yes it does! Unfortunately, unlocking the device (X+) also makes a few of the apps go bye bye. Well beyond that, they are not installed/loaded. Calculator, Flashlight & a few other HTC apps/widgets disappear. I think the broken signature kills certain signed system apps. Ran into this before, think I had to mod ext.jar, but that fix will not work any longer. (Then again, I haven't messed with this stuff in awhile & my notes are pretty bad to non-existent).
Until the source is out, I'd say this is a lost cause. Just when HTC starts getting their device crap together, they once again botch everything by locking crap down again. Nice job Petey Chou, ole chap.

until they release kernel source.. but by then everyone will be so angry, they won't be buying HTC phones
HTC added a bunch of source code today, but it's old stuff, some of it's for gingerbread still

No worries, HTC has confirmed that they're abandoning the WP software for their phones. I think they'll just be sticking with Android. However, they need to just let us unlock, have kernel source, all that because eventually we're going to get it. They're just making it more difficult. They need to just let us do it, and have a fee for replacing phones that have been modified.

Yes!! Man that is good news.. and I agree I'd be more then happy to pay a fee for an unlocked phone to be repaired. Motorla was really good about modded phones and warranties.. maybe HTC can get a hint.
Do we have a little confusion here between Write Protect and Windows Phone?
What would be the best ROM for like tweaking / customization (themes skins and all that)
I updated my stock to JB before rooted so i need something to work with that!
Any thoughts would be appreciated

a stupid lazy question...can you not look in the op of each Rom and determine which one is best for you... ? Come on buddy I know you're better than that
Asking which is the best Rom,
or when will an update be ready,
are grounds for getting roughed up in forums as they're against the rules.

Taking the ota then finding a rom is silly. You probably have fewer choices if any now that you have the updated firmware and hboot. Have fun researching with the other OTA ers

Including all of the above answers, personally I think Viper Xl 3.1.0, I mean no offense to other Devs and their roms, really they all do a great work considering it is free. However, Turge's and Viper team roms, rocks like King Kong on a free banana market, I mean dude, this thing is like Pimp my Cell phone, I am glad to donate whenever I can to Devs, and basically it comes down to, you try all the roms available to you, then you choose one, your reasons ( dont forget to check viper xl though), meanwhile you thank all the devs whose roms you tried, maybe a donation would not hurt, but never ever ever, put a rom down, no matter how bad it is. Dude, it is a free gift, so treat it like one. Anyway, i can not wait to fill my quota of 10 posts so I can join the devs forums and share my gratitude there, so whoever does not like what you just read, well guess what, thank you for your time.

It is easier than you think. Ok here is what I do, use the app goomanager to reboot to twrp recovery, back my Rom in case something funky happens, however got to warn you going from ics to jb will change kernel and other settings so personally even when I backed up I could not downgrade from jb to ics, never the less jb rocks big time, so just make sure you use an app to back up your sms prior to twrp recovery, unless you do not want to save your old sms, now once you have backed up all these, you usb mount your phone which. Basically turns your phone into a well usb memory card, then place your chosen already downloaded Rom, dnt forget turge's viper Rom 3.1.0 it is pretty bad ads and it comes with tweaks and what not but you can flash whatver you want as long as it is not international Rom, then you unmount go to install and follow the procedure, this is what people will call dirty flash or install or wtv, it doesn't matter. What this means you might run into a problem called being stuck in bootloop or smth, dnt worry happened to me many times, if you have backed up all your photos and your music you could wipe everything in your system and do factory wipe, personally I wiped even the ad card since I didn't care for back ups and preinstalled apps , but ihad saved music photo and sms, and installed it pure, runs like a charm, it might restart a coupleof times the first time but then booya , let magic happen, ill go find the link for you and you can pm me if you need more help, there is no such a thing as stupid questions, as long as you are carefull you don't offend any of the Experienced users or devs, some people take stuff personally, so good luck, ill post the link next

@op as stated the moderation team generally dislike best rom threads because what may be a great rom for one person may not be the same for others. They're to many variables to say one rom is hands down the BEST rom. Last a lot of times these threads turn into flame wars between fan boys of different devs.
