Should I or shouldn't I? - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I love my OnePlus One and find CM11s to be very good, but I am thinking about flashing other ROMs on it to try them out. What do you guys think and what ROM would you recommend? I am thinking about Slimrom as my first ROM to flash.

I tried other roms, but keep going back to CM11S, just like it better. Battery life seems to be better too on CM11S, but I haven't taken the time to go back and flash kernels on other roms and what not.

I'm holding off.. I know I can't stop romhopping if I start flashing

I honestly am quite satisfied with the stock rom. With root, and a few mods, I'm all set!

Well I'm not flashing other roms, just kernels, and the result still stock kernel is best for me.
When I tried other kernels, my device got the ghost touch, and when I switched back to stock kernel, the ghost is gone.

I got ghost with stock..:/

Try AK kernel with UKM and synapse.

Regards!

I'm not sure if you guys are aware, but these kind of 'which ROM/kernel is best/recommended' threads aren't allowed on XDA.

It's been decided recently that best rom and best kernel threads will be allowed however, we will have one large, roll up thread for this topic. Similar idea to the roll up invite thread. Here's the link to the new thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/general/best-favorite-rom-kernel-roll-thread-t2886021
With that, this thread is closed. Please continue this best rom discussion in the new thread.

Kernel compatibility with CM-based ROMs?

I have come to the N5 from a Samsung device, where if you flashed a kernel meant for a (Samsung) stock ROM onto a CM/AOSP/AOKP ROM, you would stand a good chance of bricking your phone.
Are there any similar incompatibilities between stock-based and CM-based ROMs which apply with the N5? Or can I flash any of the kernels which are available onto the CM-based (DroidKang v5) ROM I'm running?
If not, please can you explain why not and what I should be looking for in the kernel thread OP to indicate this.
Having briefly looked at a few kernel dev threads, there seems to be nothing to indicate a problem with flashing on either CM or stock.
Thanks in advance!

Bumping to try and get a reply from some kind, knowledgeable soul!
Since I originally posted I have tried flashing Bricked-Kernel, which failed. So am I stuck with using the current kernel that came with my CM-based ROM, unless I flash a new stock-based ROM?
Still not got a full answer to my question, but am now using Bricked-Kernel, which so far I'm very happy with

I come from a samsung phone and there was no chance of bricking my device by flashing the wrong type of kernel, so long as its from the same phone. Bricks come from flashing roms,.kernels, radios, bootloaders and recoveries from other phones

[Q] 4G Which Rom?

So I'm going to acquire my own Peregrine in a few days, just getting stuff ready.
If I were to scout for a rom right now, which one would be best for a daily driver?
I've been lurking around the Official CM11 thread for the Peregrine but it seems that it's having Wifi troubles and whatnot, and is still in Nightly.
Now, the question remains, which of the already available ROMs aside from CM11 would be nice? Like it wouldn't have major issues and all?
Also, does Root come by default upon flashing a ROM or does SuperSu(or whatever's available) have to be flashed thereafter?
Thanks,
Zyquil
Indeed, yes.
Seems like CarbonRom is working well for people, and is feature-rich too.
But I am yet to try it myself.
Just hope that the PA development for Peregrine won't die out.
There is no such thing as a "best ROM/kernel/mod/whatever", which is why we do not allow such threads out of respect for the developers.
Just head over to the dev section and try a few yourself, then you can decide which ROM suits you the best.

Looking for a ROM with some mods but close to stock

I am new to this device and slightly overwhelmed by how many ROMs there are to choose from. I love the stock software on the phone (i believe its cm11s?) but want some of the flexibility that comes with a custom ROM. im already unlocked and rooted but just looking for the right ROM.
Yes I know I can try to flash and just backup but hoping for direction on a good place to start.
These questions don't really offer much assistance very often, you're just gonna get a bunch of different opinions. Like you said yourself, flashing is the only real way to find out what's going to be best for you. Just have a look through the ROMs, they list their features in the first post of the ROM thread, so it should be easy for you to figure out which ROM(s) has the features you're looking for.
For what it's worth though I run Nameless ROM, it's close to stock but has a killer kernel and good ROM features. Fantastic battery life too. There's no thread for it on XDA though, they have a Google+ community here:

Does that ROM have the camera with 4k and slomo?
No custom ROM does. Only CM11S has it. But you can install it manually.

Having some trouble finding a ROM

I am still on the stock 5.0 ROM and was looking to change it up. I have not been on Android since the original EVO 4G so I am a bit lost. I already have root and TWRP recovery on. I am looking for an optimized ROM that is close to stock. I have looked at LiquidSmooth but it looks like that is only 4.4 and I saw xtrasmooth but could not find the download link. Could someone provide a link to good stable ROM that is easy to flash? Also should gapps be flashed immediately after flashing the rom? Thanks in advance.

Every ROM is easy to flash. Just look in the Development or Original Development section, there's plenty to choose from. Also, the first posts usually state whether you need to flash Gapps or not.

I know how to flash, but I am just not sure which ROM to use. So many of them have a bunch of different acronyms in the title that I have absolutely no idea what they mean. Also some of them require you to also flash a kernel or a radio which would complicate things a bit further. Just looking for something that contains everything I need. Also for gapps, my question was if I should be flashing it immediately after flashing the ROM while still in recovery or if I should reboot first then go back into recovery?

Kernel or radio shouldn't be needed anywhere, maybe just in case of F2FS. There are many great ROMs to choose from, just pick one and try it out. Just be sure to read the OP. Also, you won't be able to boot into the system properly if Gapps are missing. Some ROMs have them included, others don't.

Thanks for your help. I have been looking at this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...v3-0-hammerhead-t2616300/page713#post58172446
In the title it states 4.4.4/5.0.2. What is meant by that? Which one is it? Is it as simple as booting into recovery, wiping all, flashing the ROM, flash gapps, and rebooting?

It's best if you read descriptions of roms at their thread. Also is good to read some feedback and reports by people who allready flash it. But the best way to figure it out, which rom is best for you, is to flash it by yourself.

I do read the descriptions, but there are some things that I don't understand being new. A lot of those threads already assume that you should know what these things mean. I couldn't figure out the liquidsmooth rom since it looks like they stopped development in December and the only gapps I found is for a different version. So I got kind of confused as to what I needed.

Understand that. But if you ask something like you, you will get a lot a different answers which can just confused you a little more. Also, you will get the answers by people who do not have same taste/expectations like you. So, best way is to figure it out by yourself.

I would suggest Cyanogenmod. Its very easy to install and very customizable, its close to stock as you wanted, there are stable versions and nightlies(can be unstable/bring small updates/improvements), cyanogenmod version 11 is based on kitkat, however cyanogenmod 12 stable version is in the works and it is based on lollipop, but there are nightlies out now.

Most stable lollipop rom

Hey guys I've had my g3 rooted for a couple months now and I have yet to find a really good ROM to use cm12 was to buggy and grew tired of nightlies. Liquidsmooth was really good only issue I had was Skype and hangouts. I'm on candy5 latest build now and I'm getting a lot of glitches, force closes, etc. I've clean installed the last 2 roms and experience problems. If Liquidsmooth didn't have that Skype issue I would probably stuck to it. Any ROM suggestions?

For the most part, all the AOSP Roms like the ones you received will have similar bugs until they are ironed out over time. The least buggy Roms are those based of the lg ROM. Right now there are only 2 stock lg lollipop Roms. Both of them are very stable however they're basically just rooted versions of the stock lollipop ROM.
I see thanks for the reply can you link me 2 the 2.

[ROM][STOCK][BUMP'd] LG D850 20F Lollipop 5.0.1 (+ extras)
TekROM - D850 - Stock 20f - Lollipop - Deodex/Root/Busybox
Keep in mind both still have all that carrier bloat we love to hate. I use the first rom without issue and debloated it myself using titanium backup.
I'm surprised we don't have more roms. It's a great phone but I feel that support is lacking.

It's because the development took and still takes lots of work. The devs had a lot of work just to root Lollipop, then to flash twrp. But I also do think that between all roms available (including KK roms and LP roms) we don't have as many as other devices from the same gen have. Heck, I had my Galaxy S3 and there were ports for everything. Can't complain though, between the stock ones and illusion (talking my preferences), I feel complete.

For KitKat, there's plenty of ROMs available, partially due to the fact that porting D855 ROMs was cake (swap out kernel and modules, and you're golden). That's why there weren't too many D850-specific ROMs.
On LP, there's a new handshake process between ROM and kernel, so we can't do that...yet. I feel like "development" on ROMs as a result is going to be hindered, since there's hope that the process will get cracked, then we can just port straight from D855 with little effort. Otherwise, if we have to mess about with the D85020f base, it'll take much more time.

Gotcha, I wonder if this is being worked on. If so do you know of a thread where progress could be tracked?

@Spz0 has been talking about this as of late in his OA855-5 ROM thread, as he is readying to move the ROM to Lollipop.
The defacto LG standard ROM of many, CloudyG3 by @Cloudyfa, also will inevitably jump on this bandwagon, but he hasn't been spotted in a while. He's probably just busy or something.
Not sure why this thread even exists.. this subject has been discussed ad nauseam in the Lounge.
@Nexus.S the question you've asked is one that will never offer ONE end all solid answer. It is truly a case of "to each his own". You need to continue doing what you were doing and try obe that fits all of your needs.
There are literally hundreds of users that have commented on every rom available for this device. Asking there will get you quicker answers, rather then waiting for people to find your thread and post something witty.
Threads of this type end up being nothing more then, OT threads.
Please check the index (found HERE) which lists all the roms for this device.

I can also vouch for the first one. In fact, I was far less aggressive with debloating and have skipped xposed for now... and it's more stable, better battery life and (IMO) a better UI.

True. For some it's more the 'personal process' of discussion with others that seems important, and less the strict data/direct content of the discussion.
resurrection remix 5.0.2 is a really great rom i had doubts because it was based off of cm but i was impressed
