Having some trouble finding a ROM - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am still on the stock 5.0 ROM and was looking to change it up. I have not been on Android since the original EVO 4G so I am a bit lost. I already have root and TWRP recovery on. I am looking for an optimized ROM that is close to stock. I have looked at LiquidSmooth but it looks like that is only 4.4 and I saw xtrasmooth but could not find the download link. Could someone provide a link to good stable ROM that is easy to flash? Also should gapps be flashed immediately after flashing the rom? Thanks in advance.

Every ROM is easy to flash. Just look in the Development or Original Development section, there's plenty to choose from. Also, the first posts usually state whether you need to flash Gapps or not.

I know how to flash, but I am just not sure which ROM to use. So many of them have a bunch of different acronyms in the title that I have absolutely no idea what they mean. Also some of them require you to also flash a kernel or a radio which would complicate things a bit further. Just looking for something that contains everything I need. Also for gapps, my question was if I should be flashing it immediately after flashing the ROM while still in recovery or if I should reboot first then go back into recovery?

Kernel or radio shouldn't be needed anywhere, maybe just in case of F2FS. There are many great ROMs to choose from, just pick one and try it out. Just be sure to read the OP. Also, you won't be able to boot into the system properly if Gapps are missing. Some ROMs have them included, others don't.

Thanks for your help. I have been looking at this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...v3-0-hammerhead-t2616300/page713#post58172446
In the title it states 4.4.4/5.0.2. What is meant by that? Which one is it? Is it as simple as booting into recovery, wiping all, flashing the ROM, flash gapps, and rebooting?

It's best if you read descriptions of roms at their thread. Also is good to read some feedback and reports by people who allready flash it. But the best way to figure it out, which rom is best for you, is to flash it by yourself.

I do read the descriptions, but there are some things that I don't understand being new. A lot of those threads already assume that you should know what these things mean. I couldn't figure out the liquidsmooth rom since it looks like they stopped development in December and the only gapps I found is for a different version. So I got kind of confused as to what I needed.

Understand that. But if you ask something like you, you will get a lot a different answers which can just confused you a little more. Also, you will get the answers by people who do not have same taste/expectations like you. So, best way is to figure it out by yourself.

I would suggest Cyanogenmod. Its very easy to install and very customizable, its close to stock as you wanted, there are stable versions and nightlies(can be unstable/bring small updates/improvements), cyanogenmod version 11 is based on kitkat, however cyanogenmod 12 stable version is in the works and it is based on lollipop, but there are nightlies out now.

ROM, Kernel, Radio - BUT HOW?

OK, I finally got BakedSnack running on my device, and I love it. I know how to update it and everything so I'm good on that, what I can't find anywhere is an explenation on how to install a different Kernel or how to install "the latest Wimax and Radio"
What does that mean?? Why would I want to install a different Kernel? doesn't the ROM come with the Kernel? what's the difference between the two? And how do I update the radio or wimax? and what does that mean??
This FAQ should be a sticky!

First let me tell you that your FAQ is really a question, and belongs in the Q&A section.
Second, this question is already answered. If you check the stickies here in the dev section there are guides to this.
Try digging through these two.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Supersonic&useskin=vector
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701245
The second one at least definitely has instructions on how to update your radio. Though I'm not sure the radio image in that thread is current. So you could use the first link to find a current radio image, and the second to flash it.
Good luck
Everything that you want are flashable, just like the way you flashed your Rom. Download and flash, unless their are additional instructions, like wiping. Most roms come with custom kernels, but if you want another one then find and flash.
I Think this should be in the q&a section..
Sent from my Money Printing Machine.
Good answer Brown. Really and truly this info should be in the Wiki ( I did not find information about radios in the wiki in a quick scan-maybe I missed it). There are lots of stickies and posts and sure the information is out there but it is very fragmented and peppered with alot of 'noise' from the various threads. Thanks for helping out the OP.
Read, read oh and most important READ.

[Q] SGS4G

Okay, Let me start by saying two things. Yes I'm new to this. And yes I looked in the forums for something similar.
Now, basically I just recently rooted my Samsung Galaxy S 4G. It is Model SGH-T959V, Firmware 2.2.1, Baseband T959VUVKB5, Build FROYO.VUVKB5. There are a few things I was wanting to ask the community.
Is it possible or a good idea to update it to JB, ICS, GB. And if so what are the benefits and procedures to do so?
Secondly, I've been looking into getting some custom roms. So far the only things I have found haven't been comprehensible. They either require a higher firmware version, have no explanation as to what the rom does, or have highly technical steps which are way beyond me. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what would be some good roms? What they do? And the benefits of using them?
If this has all been discussed somewhere else and have just missed it, please feel free to link to the thread and close this one.
ok i see you are new to the concept of flashing and rooting ....etc) you should try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1001759

First, you should start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470716 Second here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V now you have all the source of instructions and guides to follow all you have to do is take some time to read and search. and now good luck to you and your phone..
Well, as for the Odin thing a lot of people have said it can brick your device, and that's not something wanna do.
As for the other guides, I started it, I got to the point where I'm updated to GB 2.3.6. The rest of the stuff didnt say what it was for, so I was unsure as whether or not to proceed. Are they required for flashing ROMs? Or just extra stuff?
The last one didn't seem to have anything really useful, but I didnt look at every last thing.
And what about useful ROMs? I've looked around online and a lot people recommend Cyanogenmod, although no one has said what it does. I looked at the steps and it seemed over complicated to install for someone new to this stuff.

In this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V it will guide you to rest of Custom rom's and kernel's that you must need to use in order to
start flashing custom rom and kernels. the rest is a guide which you can use and it will save you'r time from looking around.. The only rom which is very much stable to our phone are
GB and ICS while Cyanogenmod 10/10.1 are still in Alpha and beta stage..
Yeah, I saw that as I looked through it more. Just a lot of it is way over my head so it's gonna take me a while to get to it
That's right, you will never get lost by following that guide because everything you need to know are already in there.. just take some time to read and you
will be enlightened as you go on the process..
Well, my biggest problem is I keep looking for useful and cool ROMs, but haven't found any so far. So at the moment I can justify to myself to go through all those things just to not have anything to put on it. So far I like the GB look and feel much better than FROYO. I've found a few minor apps here and there, but so far nothing that has required flashing.
Or you can check some of the great ICS rom's we have, here i am going to provide some links of it for you.

This are just few of the rom's we have that i personally try and use it by myself, but you can have as much as you like and you can take a look at the development section and hand pick some
of the great rom's courtesy of our great dev's..
Cool, I'll check out those GB ones. Thanx
Good luck and make sure to follow as per OP's instruction of flashing the respective rom's to avoid further problem, u won't get lost as every instructions are provided
for the ease of use and flashing.. and take some time to each and every rom you flash so that you can personally experience the goodness and you can make a choice which rom you think it's best for you..

[Q] Locked bootloader looking for roms.

Yes I have looked everywhere. I got my phone and after the security update. Well it's rooted wooh! But no unlocked bootloader and honestly not looking like it/kinda nor do I want to unlock it. So does anyone have any safestrap ROMS I could look at? I really like PAC-man but does not load... so yeah any suggestions? Even cm10.1 or cm10.2

You'll need to use SafeStrap to run a ROM. With that being said, you're going to run into very few ROMs that are SS compatible. CM10.1 supposedly is comptible with SS, but I haven't found proof of that anywhere. 10.2 won't work with SS. There is a way to make ROMs work with SS, but I haven't seen anyone do it yet, atleast they haven't posted it anyway. There are a couple of stock based ROMs that have been posted lately that are reported to boot on SS. For others, you'll need to search for ROMs that were built prior to our bootloader being unlocked in April. However, if you run one of these versions, know that they are based off of 4.1.1 or the previous 4.1.2 and you might run into kernel issues.
Thank you
Thank you for the information. I'm hoping at some point there is a way to make a ROM SS compatible. Anyways if you run across any please if you wouldn't mind sending me the link to any of the SS roms you find. I'm sorry i've looked all day just haven't seemed to have found one sadly... And i'm primarily looking for 4.2+. Thanks in advance!

I can almost guarantee you won't find 4.2 or 4.3. Supposedly, to get ROM to boot on SS, it's just as simple as unpacking it and removing the boot.img then re-packing it, but I'm not really sure. For current comptible ROMs, you'll have to dig around on here and Droidrzr.com.

give me some ideas

hey ive got a mf3 s4 that i have rooted but have not yet put any roms on. ive read about as much as i can on here about roms and such. i know that i have to flash the mf3 zip after i flash the rom in safestrap on rom slot 1 and never to touch the stock rom slot. i just need some imput of which rom to use, they all sound great. so if u have used the roms could u give me some ideas of which to use. i like shostock but there are 3 versions and im still not sure which one to use, and gravitiron is also a posibilty. ive read where the WIFI sometimes wont work after flashing and that there is something u have to flash to get it to working. so if it doesent work and i go back to stock will the WIFI start working again.. sorry for the long post,.
Everyone has their own flavor here. What may be good for one may be utter crap to another. We all took roms out for a test drive till we found the one we were most comfortable with. Unfortunately no one will hold you hand on here and asking for what rom is best for you is frowned upon here. Thats why we never compare roms to one another.
As I said you have to take a few out for a test run and see which you like best. There all AWESOME in my opinion. Go to each rom and read the last few post and you will get an idea as to what issues people are running into is all I can advise. Plenty of reading ahead of you, we all did it.
Enjoy the learning.

okay, thanks for the video.
help me understand this. So this is like you got 2 roms in your phone at the same time. and we can flash the custom rom in slot1 2 3. and keep the stock rom right in the phone. that means we can always switch from the original stock rom and the custom rom that we install at slot 1. is that right??
As stated members are expected to do the research and decide for themself which ROM to try. The only thing you will get with a thread like this is what everyone's favorite ROM is and those threads are not allowed on XDA. Please read thoroughly all the ROM threads you are interested in before drastically altering your $700 device.

Updating to new 4.4 bootloader?

I'm beginning to notice thaton some of the newest nightly ROMS arent allowing my Photon Q to be flashed with some of the newer versions. I just tried flashing the newest CM11 nightly for the Photon Q and it wouldn't allow me(July 1). This also happened when I tried to use Kitstalk and the newest Liquid Smooth nightly(July 1). I tried using CWM 6.0.4.4 and TWRP 2.7.1.0, but I kept the getting same error message saying I need to have a 4.4 bootloader. Is there any way to update the bootloader or get around this?

Thanks for the reply guys. These pieces of information are really hidden, I think other than Carbon, all other ROMS aren't even letting people know the XT897 is no longer supported for the newer versions of their releases.

Assuming you only use CM11, sure maybe. Their wiki pays no mention to it when this was implemented. The unified build wiki article is one of the first hits you get when a newbie is searching to root and flash custom roms. But what about other ROMs out there? This forum seems to be the main hub for everything Photon Q, but yet i've found numerous ROMs that aren't advertised here.
