Updating to new 4.4 bootloader? - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

I'm beginning to notice thaton some of the newest nightly ROMS arent allowing my Photon Q to be flashed with some of the newer versions. I just tried flashing the newest CM11 nightly for the Photon Q and it wouldn't allow me(July 1). This also happened when I tried to use Kitstalk and the newest Liquid Smooth nightly(July 1). I tried using CWM 6.0.4.4 and TWRP 2.7.1.0, but I kept the getting same error message saying I need to have a 4.4 bootloader. Is there any way to update the bootloader or get around this?

Thanks for the reply guys. These pieces of information are really hidden, I think other than Carbon, all other ROMS aren't even letting people know the XT897 is no longer supported for the newer versions of their releases.

Assuming you only use CM11, sure maybe. Their wiki pays no mention to it when this was implemented. The unified build wiki article is one of the first hits you get when a newbie is searching to root and flash custom roms. But what about other ROMs out there? This forum seems to be the main hub for everything Photon Q, but yet i've found numerous ROMs that aren't advertised here.

Custom ROMs for Photon Q

So, thanks to Shabby and others, I've got this rooted...the question now is, are there custom ROMs for it? I don't want to risk flashing an ordinary Photon 4G ROM into it, as given how fragmented the Android landscape is that could well brick it.
I'm thinking an AOSP type, similar to the old Blandroid, as I intend to use mine for long-range SSH and Unix sysadmin stuff...so, something stable and fairly vanilla.

I'm posting after I don't even know how long just to remind you that that is the stupidest thing to do. Anyone with the brains to realize that they can do custom stuff to their phone and set off to find ways to do it (Example, stumbling upon XDA) should also have the brains to know that doing that won't work.
Edit: Don't think I'm being an a hole or anything towards you, I'm just making sure nobody stumbles upon this thread and gets the idea to do that.

I found a sight that showed some experimental roms for the photon q. Any idea if there is anything on the horizon for the photon q. I would love to have the jelly bean on it. I did download and flash the asanti build and also arrrrgh kernel so it's running at 1.89mhz. But I really don't see much on the difference in the rom from stock. Just wishin.
Roms
I flashed Asanti mostly works fine. Only thing that bugs me is I can't get my antivirus to work.
If I brick it I will just have to either fix it or buy a new one, no big deal.

CM10 has been informally released - but it's for GSM only right now.
Edit - now that I check the rest of the forums, it's formal.

[Q] 2 roms questions

Hi, sorry if this thread is short, but i have two question blowing my mind.
1: Why don't whe have a 4.0.4 Cyanogenmod Rom?
2: And can we have a stock 4.1.2 rom? I mean, with motoblur, not cyanogenmod or that kinda variants
I know that motorola isn't collaborating with its upgrades. But, there is any chance?
First of all the boot loader is locked that means no custom kernel that means no proper CM builds, still there is an unofficial CM ROM in the development section take a look at it. And don't forget the funda "search before you post"..

You don't get me at all. I know that there's 3 roms of 4.1.2 CM.
And this was my comment about that, but no ones answers me:
I know that is hard, and i really really really apreciate the work that they're doing.
But, we have 3 roms of cyanogenmod, and the 3 roms have the same bugs.
I repeat. I know, they can't spend the whole free-time that you have working in the creation of the rom. But, why don't you team up and make a unique functional rom.
Or, am i missing something, and for the moment we can't have a functional rom because of motorola or whatever?
I repeat again, sorry if i'm bothering someone, but i ask this from my ignorance.

Then learn how to build your own freaking ROM, and why even start a NEW thread with this junk, it all fits in the CM Q&A thread.
These types of threads are not cool to your dev team. We all work very hard to bring the stuff that we do, to you guys, for free.
If you do not like the bugs in the CM based roms that we have then do not use them and stick to stock and stop basically complaining about it, or do some reading and learn about the process and see why we have these issues, we have all posted about it so many times now it is not even funny.
I saw your post before and chose to ignore it, but now that you have posted a new thread like this, I just had to reply.
--EDIT--
And to answer the questions you put in the first post here:
1) because the source for CM10 with 4.0.4 is not out anymore
2) because motorola will not release a 4.1 or 4.2 stock ROM and kernel, so we can not port that, even our 4.1 and 4.2 CM based roms are still really 4.0.4 because we still have the 4.0.4 version of the kernel underneath.
Again all this has been spelled out too many times now and some reading and searching could have gotten your answers.

I am not mad BTW, I am just tired of people not doing their own research. You are more than welcome to do some reading on compiling Cyanogenmod, so that you understand what we are up against. Also try searching for compiling cyanogenmod on locked bootloaders.
We (all the A2 devs), have answered these same questions so many times now, it is not even funny. It seems that as of late people have gotten more and more lazy in here, and we just keep hashing the same crap over and over again.
You say it is from your own ignorance, but you do not have to be ignorant, just use the search function or do some reading on your own and find what you need. And I do not want to hear excuses or complaints about the search function, I use it all the time, all you have to do is play with the wording until you find what you want. Also note other devs did not answer your original query either, for probably the same reason, not to put words in their mouth's either.

Also I hate to tell you but most of your devs do "team up" and we work together on our IRC chat room to do dev work, but again reading around the forms would have also told you that as well, as we talk about it quite often.

I think only PA is 4.1.2 so far.. the others are 4.1.1, I think
And Jim's right, I also saw your post in the PA thread and started to reply, but discarded it because I felt I was sounding too mean.. let me try again:
I can say from my personal experience and (relatively low) skill level - it's a mess trying to get all the pieces in place to compile a working ROM from source code for our phone - specifically, the vendor and device files..
I know at least a few A2 devs are working to straighten things out for Edison directly - and a few others working on other Motos with similar hardware and locked bootloaders, which benefits us all.
It's probably safe to say that our phone is in the early stages of true ROM development (as opposed to derivative pseudo-roms and ports) - there is still a lot of work to be done to get something truly stable.
Again, please be patient, or learn and contribute... don't stir the pot.

[Q] Locked bootloader looking for roms.

Yes I have looked everywhere. I got my phone and after the security update. Well it's rooted wooh! But no unlocked bootloader and honestly not looking like it/kinda nor do I want to unlock it. So does anyone have any safestrap ROMS I could look at? I really like PAC-man but does not load... so yeah any suggestions? Even cm10.1 or cm10.2

You'll need to use SafeStrap to run a ROM. With that being said, you're going to run into very few ROMs that are SS compatible. CM10.1 supposedly is comptible with SS, but I haven't found proof of that anywhere. 10.2 won't work with SS. There is a way to make ROMs work with SS, but I haven't seen anyone do it yet, atleast they haven't posted it anyway. There are a couple of stock based ROMs that have been posted lately that are reported to boot on SS. For others, you'll need to search for ROMs that were built prior to our bootloader being unlocked in April. However, if you run one of these versions, know that they are based off of 4.1.1 or the previous 4.1.2 and you might run into kernel issues.
Thank you
Thank you for the information. I'm hoping at some point there is a way to make a ROM SS compatible. Anyways if you run across any please if you wouldn't mind sending me the link to any of the SS roms you find. I'm sorry i've looked all day just haven't seemed to have found one sadly... And i'm primarily looking for 4.2+. Thanks in advance!

I can almost guarantee you won't find 4.2 or 4.3. Supposedly, to get ROM to boot on SS, it's just as simple as unpacking it and removing the boot.img then re-packing it, but I'm not really sure. For current comptible ROMs, you'll have to dig around on here and Droidrzr.com.

It does work. Please go read the linked thread.
The link is for the method to only go back to stock. Creating a Rom and flashing it like that will not work. Sorry.
Also, for future reference, this section is for development not requests. That is what the general and Q&A sections are for.

Glad you are excited but word on the street is alot of the roms for our phones are 99% complete. As soon as we get an unlock/exploite for our phone you will probably see most of your main stream builds pop up. IE. Slim rom, Cyanogen, Carbon, AOKP, etc. I am in no means trying to discourage you but in all due time I am sure you will have a choice of roms to pick from. The source for most of those roms listed above are on github you could start building and forking for our device and I am not sure our device files are available yet.

I have been holding off on rooting my D850 until Slim is available. Ran it on my Sensation, and HTC One M7. I know one can do all sorts of tweaks with some add-ons, but Slim was just the complete package. Can't wait....
I have SlimKat on 2 S3s in the house. I would love to get it on my G3 and G Pad 7
Yes slim will be coming to the g3 as soon as the bootloader is unlocked. I am the slim maintainer for the optimus g and g2. I have a g3 sitting in a drawer at home. Unfortunately, until the bootloader is unlocked (and im very confident it will happen. Thecubed unlocked it on the lgog), it is not possible to have any roms yet.

Having some trouble finding a ROM

I am still on the stock 5.0 ROM and was looking to change it up. I have not been on Android since the original EVO 4G so I am a bit lost. I already have root and TWRP recovery on. I am looking for an optimized ROM that is close to stock. I have looked at LiquidSmooth but it looks like that is only 4.4 and I saw xtrasmooth but could not find the download link. Could someone provide a link to good stable ROM that is easy to flash? Also should gapps be flashed immediately after flashing the rom? Thanks in advance.

Every ROM is easy to flash. Just look in the Development or Original Development section, there's plenty to choose from. Also, the first posts usually state whether you need to flash Gapps or not.

I know how to flash, but I am just not sure which ROM to use. So many of them have a bunch of different acronyms in the title that I have absolutely no idea what they mean. Also some of them require you to also flash a kernel or a radio which would complicate things a bit further. Just looking for something that contains everything I need. Also for gapps, my question was if I should be flashing it immediately after flashing the ROM while still in recovery or if I should reboot first then go back into recovery?

Kernel or radio shouldn't be needed anywhere, maybe just in case of F2FS. There are many great ROMs to choose from, just pick one and try it out. Just be sure to read the OP. Also, you won't be able to boot into the system properly if Gapps are missing. Some ROMs have them included, others don't.

It's best if you read descriptions of roms at their thread. Also is good to read some feedback and reports by people who allready flash it. But the best way to figure it out, which rom is best for you, is to flash it by yourself.

I do read the descriptions, but there are some things that I don't understand being new. A lot of those threads already assume that you should know what these things mean. I couldn't figure out the liquidsmooth rom since it looks like they stopped development in December and the only gapps I found is for a different version. So I got kind of confused as to what I needed.

I would suggest Cyanogenmod. Its very easy to install and very customizable, its close to stock as you wanted, there are stable versions and nightlies(can be unstable/bring small updates/improvements), cyanogenmod version 11 is based on kitkat, however cyanogenmod 12 stable version is in the works and it is based on lollipop, but there are nightlies out now.
