Hello,
I am a big noob - when that has been said - I am happy about my Nexus S.
I own the EU model, I9023. I have downloaded and manually installed ICS (incremental), but it seems like it uses as much power as GB.
I consider myself as a heavy user of my phone - I text a lot - 100, maybe more, pr day. I read news, emails and so on from my cellphone. My battery will last for maybe 12 hours before I start to conserve the battery.
I have tweaked, deactivated all sync except Google, optimized within the stock rom (without root).
I have read that you can do a lot of things to your phone to help this. I have looked at ebay and amazon for a replacement battery, but all of them fits 9020 and not the 9023 (expect those costing way beyond 70-80$ + shipping)
I have read that there is some kernels for android which is using more features to help improving the battery life. So, I have tried to get an overview, but the lists of kernels and roms are very extensive and I cannot tell difference as I am not expert in android roms and kernels.
I weight stability and usability - therefore, I have no needs for fancy features - stock rom is fine or something like that, if needed. I have read about the deep idle feature which sounds like a very big issue that stock android does not have implemented. So I am looking for a kernel which is stable and can help me improve my battery life (if possibly).
As I have not rooted my Nexus S or anything before, I would also ask if someone could make/link to a step by step guide to rooting and installing it. I can see a lot of methods for rooting nexus s in this forum, but I would prefer one which is fairly simple and is confirmed working with android 4.0.3
Thank you for your help
Turn off auto sync on apps like Facebook and Widgets. Calibrate your batt every once in a while. Get a kick ass kernel like speedy or matr1x.
Would matrix kernel work with ICS 4.0.3 stock, but rooted?
Hi,
You really should root your Nexus. I was on stock ICS before and had barely a day of battery. Now I'm on Petes Buggless Beast with steven garons kernel. I Love it, everything runs flawless, stable, smooth(better than stock) and with medium usage i have 2 days with my nexus. Even more when i only do some calls and some pulse reading and some maps usage.
Youll find all the guides you need in the general section.
Here are some pics of my battery with little usage.
Hello,
I have now rooted and installed Matr1x kernel.
Then I am running stock 4.0.3 with Matr1x kernel. I downloaded NStools and activated Deep Idle. Lets see if that will improve my battery time
Hi All,
When I recently got a P500 I installed GingerBlurb V5 as that seemed to me the most complete ROM. Basically I need everything working (my network is 3G only, no 2G, need bluetooth working for car). With this ROM everything worked. Have made some enhancements to it to update where it didn't include the latest, and installed the v2.5.8-ta-vsyncOff-20121129 kernel (as this had the latest long term kenel compiled in 2.6.35.14). Everything works very smoothly.
But I wonder if I should move on from Gingerbread. I've read some opinions here that people believe the P500 is really a gingerbread device, and going beyond that isn't conducive for functionality and battery life.
So what do you guys think? If there is no Android 4.x ROM that has basically everything working the point is moot obviously. If there is, is there still any advantage on staying with Gingerbread?
ICS is about as stable as GB these days, the main difference being the battery life. ICS drains the battery faster than GB, especially with wifi or mobile data on. JB and higher, the battery life drops even further -- an hour with mobile data on, and I lose 10-15% or more battery. JB also has the occasional bug. The latest KitKat test builds seem more stable than JB, imho, but again, battery (though it seems to do better than JB).

Depends what you use your phone for. If you use it for calls & messaging, and not to much for games and media, KitKat is not that bad. I leave my phone to charge every night although the batter drops to about 40% during the day. So 60% lasts about 15 hours for me in normal usage.
It depends on you, sometimes you may want the feel of GB much than after when you flash new roms. As the above person says.. some rom may be as stable as that of GB and can be used as daily driver. But in the end of the day you will still be the one to decide on whether you'll move on or not. If you really are satisfied with GB then stay at it.. Cheers.
The best thing you can do is try to find the most stable and smooth ROM for each of GB, ICS, JB and KK and test them all. Keep the one that best suits your needs. Good luck!
After more than a year trying every ROM released on XDA for my P500, I've found that P500 native ROM are in GB, and in GB the device will show it's full potential, but beside that, I've also found that the second most stable ROM are ICS. For JB and KK I thinks it's still in test and development phaze.
The ICS ROM I used:

Hi all!
I want to change the ROM of my HTC One Mini (currently 4.4.2 Stock, Bootloader unlocked, rooted) for install something more light and fast.
In my HTC sometimes i can see lags even in the home screen, moving from a page to another.
And i also have a big battery drain, even without 3rd party apps that consume battery. Currently i'm using only 2G (i locked 3G) and i turned off the backlights of buttons to save some energy, disabled apps like facebook etc, low brightness...but if i disconnect it from the current at 8 am he will have 50-40% at 4pm with a medium/low usage.
So, returning to my question, which is the better ROM for me?
No one?

No one can help me?
I've only used the stock based roms on here, not cm11 or other. But from my experience I found stock 4.3 to be the best in speed and battery. The main thing to do if your rooted is to delete system apps you don't use. Do some research on what's good or not to remove. Apps like Greenify can help. Personally I don't think you battery results are that bad. As long as you can reach the end of the day without charging your doing ok. Can't see another Rom giving you double battery life.

Ok
I will try stock 4.3 so!
thanks
I've got one mini for 5 months now and belive me i tried a bunch of roms. Right now i am on 4.4.2 sense 6 rom, which works perfect except whatsapp issue (you need exactly 2.11.226 version to work) and there is no "show recent apps" when you double tap home button, but that can also be solved with app called "swipe home button''. That is if you want to stick with stock based roms and sense, but get something new.
You could also try cyanogenmod, but as its still nightly i've expirienced some bugs, and found the "Codename Lungo" better working, which is also based on cm11.
In my opinion these cm based roms could help with your battery drain but they certainly have more bugs that stock based ones.
If you feel like experimenting, you could try this new pacman rom, i havent tried it yet. Anyway here are the links to threads:

Hi all
i had my OPO for 2 months now
and i decided to root my phone and try some custom ROMs and kernels since they're so popular , so last month i rooted my phone and take a spin on those famous ROMs and kernels ( partly is also the touchscreen issue and random reboots are driving me nuts ) i won't specify what ROM or kernel i am using though
first impressions when i had a new ROMs is that , there's nothing much that is different i though things would be faster snappier with a new kernel built in but ...my OPO did not , my phone did get more stable but it did suffer from multigesture issue once and force rebooted 3 times in the span of 1 month , but the biggest issue is that my phone keeps getting systemui has stopped working , multitasking button gets bugged one too many times , wallpapers constantly missing when i unlock my phone and animations are very clunky
so yesterday i decided to go back to stock just to remind myself how stock feels , using NANdroid backup i restored everything and...
stock 44s feels so much better compared to custom ROMs which begs the question
why do people deviate from stock ROM on OPO ? stock cm is pretty sweet , I understand rooting the phone to get xposed etc but custom ROMs just don't feel right on the OPO ...so is it just me ?
still props to all the devs out there , no offense just my 2 cents
I think if varies for the phones and locations, but I was getting some pretty beastly battery life, smooth/fast experience with vanir and Franco. For some reason I just didn't like stock and was not getting as great battery life. I've tried many things and some are good, but there are better (to me at least). I'm just running Lollipop now and can't seem to go back to kk.
It all comes down to ones preference really...
Sent from my A0001 using XDA Free mobile app
wait , isn't cm12 for OPO currently a little unstable? i really wanted to give it a shot but i fear that it is too unstable for a daily driver
Working fine for me; I don't think it is to the point where it can't be a daily driver. I'm really liking it so far, the Lollipop experience feels really nice and smooth.
Check comments from others on the threads to see the kind of issues they're having. Devs are doing daily builds so as days pass it gets better and better.

Sounds like you didn't do any kernel configurations at all to experience changes.
On AK, with Synapse and UKM, you can change numerical values to configure how the phone handles processes. Default kernel settings aren't optimum for every phone.
My settings consist of: slim (300-2457), CPU boost driver (10ms, 1574MHz, 30ms, 1190MHz), CPU Volt (-35mV), I/O sio @ 1536KB read ahead, drop caches, laptop mode, Vibrator at 25, Fast Charge at 1500mA, C1 (Retention) disabled, 120 second Wifi Scan interval.
With those settings, it makes a HUGE difference compared to stock, as well as fix bugs (screen artifact/tearing) before they were fixed on the latest firmware, and increases battery life by 1.5 times stock.

I have the same questioning but without any problems that you had/have/ My phone works perfectly ( crossing fingers ) and i've had it since July. I always used to ROM my S3-S4-S5 to get a new feel of the phone, but with the Oppo i don't see the reason to. Maybe it's because CM is pretty near pure stock Android, and that's what we get when we switch ROMs on big brands.

OP, it is not just you. Folks who mess about with custom ROMS, as the other posts here share, do so because they can customize the total phone experience, leaving things off, and putting other items on, to their liking. Giving that the background OS is stable, and the apps a person selects are stable, there should be little to no difference in 'performance', overall, due to the apps. However, you may get performance differences because there are less TSR's currently running in your system, so more memory is available, etc, which can make mainline apps run faster.
So many reasons to do custom apps.
As you said, and I agree, CM is a nice, generally smooth OS/ROM. I am coming from an LG G3, which I like very much, but to customize (remove all the junk), and fine tune (remove Google calling home = less battery live, etc), it take's some time to setup those conditions. With CM, most of the junk is not present at the onset (AT&T largely). Much more clean. I would like Google to be disassociated from CM completely, so that it is an add on only, providing better control of the base CM. I would like this in an official CM ROM/official variation.
That is the reason I have/am switching over to the OnePlus. I have tried a few custom ROMs as well, and the stock CM seems to have the best stability, reliability and consistency, to date. I suspect that will change when a large update comes out, such as L, and a great amount of energy goes into that development. I just changed from 38 to 44 last night on three OPO's. It took 5 minutes, or so, a piece, and all of the data/previous apps, setup etc, stayed with the updates, making for an all too easy update.
Awesome. Next will be "L". I will wait for the CM official, as that will likely be the most stable, as I suspect it is getting the most attention from the CM team, at this time. CM is a pretty nice OS.
Ok so before the 4.4.4 OTA update my phone ran amazingly well, and even after updating hboot with the OTA Roms with a 4.4.3 base work fine and AOSP is not an issue. Now whenever i try to use a rom with 4.4.4 base sense/GPE roms, my battery life goes to complete crap. Until now i didnt really care, i just stayed on 4.4.3 roms and AOSP roms, but with the minor quirks with those roms im just looking for something more solid., and im starting to want to try out the EYE experience. I've tried multiple roms, even a new Lollipop rom based on the GPE rom by digital high and the battery life is still crap, i just cant get it to work right
RKDN ROM is amazing battery life.
Give Santod's UnSense a shot. It's based off Sense 6 on 4.4.4 but is skinned to look like stock Android which is plus if you're a little tired of Sense. It still comes with all the Sense goodies (camera, gallery, etc.) and I've been able to get 4 hours SOT with horrible signal so if you have better signal, you could probably stretch it some more.
I think the real problem is media server. Ive always downloaded a ton of music off of play music right after installing a new rom. Though for this rom i only have a few songs downloaded and my battery life if fine. I would think to just kill media server but then my music stops playing and it doesnt fix the problem, my battery life is still crap
I have not experienced this. I am currently running DigitalHigh's L rom, but when I was on carbonrom(4.4.4) I was getting around 6 hours of on screen time on a bad day, and almost 8.5 hours on a really good day. Could it be an issue is your settings? I'm currently flashing a rom so I can't post a pic of my screen on time on carbonrom, but I will as soon as I'm done.
Ok so im on stock 4.4.4 now. im using trickster kernel mod to monitor my cpu usage and its constantly maxed, i installed CodeCraft kernel and its the same deal.........Why is it maxing out my cpu? It also refuses to go into deep sleep
