Pro2 questions and observations - Microsoft Surface

Hello i have a few questions and observations:
1.) Arc touch Mouse surface edition: is it using more battery since it is running via bluetooth? Anyone with experiencs? Or is a USB Mouse better?
2.) USB adapter hub recommendations? Any good experiences?
3.) Shutting down: I noticed when I choose shut down the pro2 actually doesn't shut down but goes in a kind of hibernation state, I used speedfan, which showed the up time. However when I perform a windows update and then choose shut down it actually shuts down, again I checked this with speedfan. Question can I somehow change the settings that the pro2 actually shuts down instead of hibernating.
4.) One drive and Skype WiFi: like all of you I got the free subscription card for one drive and Skype WiFi. I am not using a hotmail or the sorts but a local logon and only use my hotmail for certain apps., the one drive require that I sign my whole account into hotmail. I don't want that, anyway around that except via desktop? Skype app requires me to sign in as well, but I have an existing not hotmail linked account, but still I can not login...and how does Skype WiFi work?
5.) What's the best way to create a d: partition on the pro2?
For your info I bought the incipio self healing screen protector and I am very happy with it. Also I made my self a matching skin for my cover on decalgirl.
Thanks for your constructive feedback

Fuze & ActiveSync 4.5

I just bought an AT&T Fuze today. I'm ready to take it back to the AT&T store, throw it at them, and buy a Tilt. I've used an 8525 for the last two years, and it works well. However, the Fuze looked like a great improvement. . .until I tried to sync. Here's my system:
XP Professional
Fuze
Lotus Notes email client
Small consulting shop: two workstations, one server
I'm just trying to get AS 4.5 working so I can load some third-party software (Commontime's mNotes5), sync my Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, etc., and be done. The first time I tethered the Fuze to my workstation, ActiveSync kicked right up and ran Connecting for > 30 minutes before I gave up, turned it off, downloaded ActiveSync again from the Macroshaft website, and reinstalled it (because I thought the version I had might be out of date - it wasn't - it was EXACTLY the same Build [5096] as what I had before).
Well now, my workstation thinks the Fuze is a USB Storage Device, responds accordingly, and NEVER launches ActiveSync. When I launch it, it just sits there showing Not Connected.
Folks, I'm no technogenius. I'm just a self-employed financial guy trying to get a piece of new equipment to work. I have no idea why this thing isn't working, but I'm about at my wits' end.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate hearing them. Again, I'm no tech guy, so please assume I know nothing (you'd be right) and try to lead me accordingly. Thanks in advance for your help.

Go to Start->Settings->Connections->USB to PC.
What's selected there? If you want the option between ActiveSync and Mass Storage every time you connect, check the box on the bottom. Otherwise, make sure ActiveSync is selected. Also, try turning off Advanced Network Functionality if you are having problems with it turned on.
I'm assuming the Fuze is set up the same way in this area as the Sprint Touch Pro, I apologize if it isn't. When I had my Mogul, it would never connect through ActiveSync for me if I had the advanced network functionality turned on.
Banzaiwolfe, all I can say is thank you, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, a million times over. You're an absolute genius. I did exactly as you suggested, and my Fuze is now synching my Notes emails, Contacts, Calendar, and Tasks. I can't thank you enough. But I will definitely make a donation to this Forum immediately, and if there's a place where I can mention you, you can be sure that I will.
I'm so grateful. So grateful. Thanks a million.

Is there going to be any xda support on this? It's still trickling into Kmart stores right now. but if we are able to OC this, that would be great
Doubt it...
its a great little device for little cash. i bought one today after i heard. glad i did. was this or the bb chumby. this blows it away
Hey Pen --
Have you tried the Kindle app on it? I want an ereader that is bigger than my MT3G and I think one of these would foot the bill if I can find one. My local store only had one and it was on hold for somebody.
I am going to get a rain check today.
until they release the patch which allows the market to work i havent tried it. they should have the patch released by tomorrow
How is the screen?
How do you like the screen and how is its performance in general.
over all i like the device. im used to a resistive screen so thats not a problem. doesnt appear to have the auto rotate screen but waiting to hear back from them to find out what the deal is. the manual talks about auto rotating the screen so it should have it. lack of bluetooth is another draw back but i really dont need it. they also have a 2.5mm headphone jack on them instead of a 3.5 like normal but they are addressing that with an adapter i do believe.
power consumption wasnt too bad. i was using the device for 5 hours yesterday and only used a 1/4 reserve from what it said. so i was only down to around 72% charge after playing with it for 5 hours. was reasonably bright enough in a brightly lit room. the angle one can see is pretty good as well.
the microsd card slot isnt in line properly. so if you insert a card you will want to put a price of tape on the end of it so when you release it you can pull it out. i played hell getting the thing to pull out and it was dragging the top of the card so had to use a pair of tweezers to pull it out.
cant access the market yet so havent tried the nook or kindle apps but that will be my next thing. looking at pictures was good. just as good as my digi pic frame.
over all for what i bought it for i do believe it will work a treat. i was going to buy a chumby either the bb or the sony branded chumby and this will work so much better then either of those two devices.
Augen Tablet
Thanks for the info pen.
It surprises me that that it has a 2.5mm jack. I wonder how it ended up with that. You can get an adapter on Amazon or ebay for a buck or two. That would be important for me because I'd like to be able to watch movies on it when I am on the train to work. That is also why I am interested in the Kindle app.
Everything that I have read seems to indicate that it has an accelerometer to rotate the screen.
I get the feeling that Augen underestimated the interest this device was going to generate and put it on the market when it wasn't completely ready, thinking they could dabble a little and fix problems on the fly with the couple of people that bought them. oops.
My Augen Gentouch78 experience
I just picked up my Augen yesterday at the KMart here in Phoenix (KMart actually called me on my raincheck I had made over the phone! Kudos to them). I like the form factor but am quite disappointed overall. While I don't think it is sluggish in general, the resistive touch screen makes it seem that way. Using your fingernail or an old pda stylus helps considerably in that regard.
Couple of negatives:
1. Market download does not work, as others have pointed out (it just stays in the "Starting Download" phase.
2. Micro SD card is hard to insert/remove (you need to use your fingernail in both cases, and to remove you need to also flick it down a bit to slide out as it seems to catch on the lip of the slot).
3. The device could not "Mount" when connected to my PC via USB. I had better luck when the SD card was not in the device, as I was able to Mount it once then, and saw that I had 1.3GB of free space... even though the device SD card info showed only 246ishMB free... what's up with that? (documentation did say there was 2GB available, so the Mounted drive size was closer).
4. I lost sound twice.. had to power off to get it back (all sounds started coming out as loud white noise). Seems to occur when pressing the top front part of the frame... yup, near where the menu/home/back buttons are.
5. Percentage battery use shows that monitoring cellular network was using 57% of the battery, and suggested turning it off. However, you can't... network settings only have WiFi (I curiously did find a place where it prompted me to turn on Bluetooth, but I don't think it did anything).
6. I wanted to return the unit due to the sound problem, but wanted to clear out my google account info... the factory reset does nothing other than power off the unit, even though that is how they say to clear out all data including the google account data.
7. No auto-rotate. No rotate at all that I can see. Nothing in the setup relating to that, even though the manual says it should be there.
8. Non-US Standard earphone jack
9. No mic or web cam
10. Resistive touch screen makes typing on the on-screen keyboard a PITA. I did get somewhat use to it after a while, but still don't like having to press firmly.
On the positive side:
After manually copying a ripped DVD movie in mp4 format onto my SD card and inserting it into the unit, it played great.
So, first impressions are basically way down there for me.
Some other specs:
- Telechips TCC8900 ARM CPU (on an eval board no-less!)
- Android 2.1 - Update 1
- Build 2010-07-21 (boy did they push these out the door... likely with no testing!!)

they are pushing an update out should be out tonight or tomorrow to fix a couple of the things. i believe the eval board is not correct as someone has found the chinese version of this and it has been out for a while. i just think the cooking of this device wasnt the best. i am just hoping they push 2.2 out on it pretty quickly.
I also got one today
I can confirm the market is not working for me either.. Yes build date is really new. haha.. I'm trying to get apps installed by emailing myself APK's to Gmail but I need something like APKatcher to do it. So so far I've not installed anything, but going into settings, aplications and manage I was able to kill the running apps and speed it up.
So far it's a cool little device. I also lost sound once and a reboot fixed it. haha (interesting) I watched 20 minutes of avatar and it looks incredible and gets much louder than a cell phone.. My 16GB MicroSD card went in fine.
There's a Stylus if you guys didn't figure that out yet. Makes typing extremely easy.
Anyone know how I can install some APK's?
ES File Manager comes Pre Loaded.. you can add any app APK to the SD card. and use ES File Manager to install
Installing Quadrant, and some games right now.. I'll post back
Rainchecks
I got two rain checks tonight. I want to get one for myself and I know my wife will want one if it is cool.
If anybody really wants one and lives in Eastern PA, they have 4 of them in the Reading PA store. That is a little far for me to drive and I like getting a rain check because I can make sure they are going to put out an update to make the market work.
It seems like the early reviews are mixed at best but c'mon...they are $150. I mean, if I can get my 6 year old to watch a thomas the tank engine video on it for a few minutes of peace each day, I have gotten my money's worth.
Dev thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7409528#post7409528
Well I got one yesterday and it is horrible.
I am hoping their support can help me get the screen a bit more responsive.
I mean I have to press on it like I'm trying to push through it.
The manual says there supposed to be a calibrations but there isn't.
The manual says there is an option to allow this to orientate according tot he direction held but theres not.
The manual says that when you charge the device the light should be red in color turning green when fully charged well I charged over night and its still red.
When I turn it on it says 100% battery...
Also I went into market which is like that on my Droid1, Incredible, Droidx... and chose to install a app like dropbox, weatherbug, MyMemo, SlingPlayer and it sis there saying downloading but its not.
I have my wifi connected to the device...
Anyone else with ideas???
I so wanted this to be a iPad alternative!!!
Thanks
I got one last night... I side loaded a bunch of apps from my Incredible... LauncherPro, Pandora, Quick Settings, Android System Info... Awesome Drop...they all work... The weird thing is some of the apps force the screen to Portrait, but i haven't found an app yet to turn it back.. (aside from rebooting)
I noticed the sound is wonky... sometimes it works...
I also noticed something installed called Dev Tools... It has a terminal, a bunch of dev settings, a package browser, sync tester, and some google tools..
I got one today as well. So far, all is not well.
Wifi seems to be an issue. I can connect to my network if I turn off security, but when I enable WEP, this thing just sits here and says 'Obtaining IP Address' and then shows 'Unsuccessful'. I have tons of other devices connected. The problem is not the network.
So, with security off, I played with it a bit. The browser seems to work fine. It defaults to mobile pages and I'd love to turn that off. No Flash as expected.
I also have a problem with sound. When anything produces sound (mp3, video, youtube, even clicking on something) all I get is horrible white noise.
I get constant alerts that things have failed to download. I assume that this is due to the Marketplace issue.
I threw in a micro SD that I had. I have no problems with it sticking as others have reported.
I will admit that this is my first taste of Android. I am a professional developer for other platforms though so I'm not a total knucklehead - just partial.
I hear that an update is imminent. Anyone have any info about this? Will it be done via the SD card? USB?
I REALLY want this to work
Greg
Update:
Looks like a reboot fixed a few things now. I am now connected to my secured network and sound is ok. So now I have a more or less functioning tablet.
You guys aren't having screen issues?
This is posted on the Augen website:
Patch for GENTOUCH78 Tablet (available 1700EST)
Dear Augen Customers (GEN Nation),
Thank you for showing your support and interest in our GENTOUCH78 Tablet. We became aware of the technical difficulties over the past 24 hours, and we will be posting an update for a patch to the software at the following link: http://augen.helpserve.com/ under latest download files within the next 48 hours.
Just to mention a few technical difficulties we have found and are patching are:
the memory size of 284mb not being shown as 2GB will be corrected as this is a glitch in the software.
Android Market place not being able to download apps will be fixed in this patch, as this is a glitch in the software. As of right now the operating system and pre-loaded applications are using .5 Gb so the available space displayed should be approximately 1.5GB.
To solve the issue with the headphone jack being too small for a 3.5 mm headphone connection, we ask you to send us an email to [email protected] with your Name, Adress, eMail Adress along with a proof of purchase. We will be sending you at our expense the 2.5 mm headphones to go along with the unit within 15-20 days. All future products that will be manufactured will have the new patch and a 2.5mm earbud to go along with the unit.
We want to make it a great experience for our customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to make it a great experience at Augen.
Thank you for your support,

[Q] Unlock PC with phone (NFC)

Heya,
So I had this idea where I'd unlock my PC with my phone. Here's how I thought it could work:
I have 2 users on my PC, me and my girl, however, on the same account, so no need to switch accounts. Depending on which phone I use to unlock it (via NFC, no idea how) it should:
For me:
- Unlock screen
- Run certain apps
- Set skype to online from away
- Play music
For girl:
- Unlock screen
- Run certain apps
- Leave skype away
- Play music
Upon removal of the phone from the dock (?) it should lock the pc and kill the apps etc. I know how to task all this but here are the questions:
- How do I lock my PC in such manner that it can't be accessed in any other way other then unlocking it with NFC (screen/keyboard/mouse lock, processes online should still be running)?
- How do I trigger all this with an NFC tag?
Thanks!

I think I looked over all threads that come up when you search for NFC on the forums >.> But sure, I'll look more
I don't believe there's any technology that would allow you to do that, currently. There'd have to be much tighter integration between your phone and desktop OS and I think if anyone is going to do that it's probably going to be Apple and not a random Android phone vendor.
I thought about the experience that you're trying to create and I think one way that could be realized in the future is if your phone IS your whole PC, and docking your phone just connects it to external resources: monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and other peripherals. When you're done, you just undock and someone else can dock their phone in. There could be kiosks for this in internet cafes and at the airport where you can work and charge your phone at the same time. Maybe the dock would connect you to wired internet service too, so while you were docked you didn't need to worry about mobile data coverage and usage. Phones are relatively limited in storage space but with network-attached storage and cloud-hosting you could have access to all the data you need.
Well those are my thoughts. Sorry I couldn't give you a solution but it might be 10 years too early for one.
Damn. It sounded so good locking your pc with something you carry rather then having an usb just to unlock it. Oh well thanks for the reply I hope someone looks into it. Would enhance work security too, even if someone gained access to your work pc they would still need your phone to abuse it.
Thanks again!

The Idea isn't bad at all.
What you would have to do to get it to work is to write your own CSP to allow Windows to use your device as it:s logon credential.
IT's the same framework that smartcard pluggins andd so on uses so it's not impossible. MS built in the capability to extend the login functions but it won't be easy

I'm basically looking to lock screen/keyboard/mouse only, not necessarily log out the user, as I want background programs to keep running. Now I have no idea if a PC can know which phone is tapped into the NFC. Basic idea would be to have sticker/reader on the desk, put the phone there and use PC. Upon removal, the PC would be locked. From what I understand, NFC has 2 modes (like connected and not) so it wouldn't be a battery drain. Or would it

locking/unlocking is handled through the same components as login/logout so it will be the same type of
code/system calls anyway It will be a lot less for only locking so it will be easier though :good:

Aye =) I'm gonna dive into this, my dev is busy with some other work, but I think he can pull this off. Would be interesting to see it anyway, maybe do a GUI with basic functions like login skype to this user, play this music, open up this chrome etc.. Does a dime on effectivness with shared computers @ work or at home.
Next step might be to make user specific files - Sonya/Download for instance - inacessible for anyone but the owner.
If anyone knows an open source project that has some of the lock functions already, but is made for USB locks or anything, do let me know it will speed up the process. I plan on sharing the app here for free anyways ^.^
Cheers

broken android screen, some limited remote access, need data backup

Hi guys
Due to unforeseen consequences during a holiday, a beer bottle got dropped on my phone and it cracked the screen. Now I want to take a backup of my photos before I send for repairs and I will appreciate any help I can get! Here are the details:
Phone: Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
Firmware: Stock Sony Kitkat, non rooted
Screen: Cracked, funny colours cannot see anything on the screen and touch does not work
USB Debugging Mode: Off
Wifi: On
Resources Available: OTG cable, AndroidLost is installed (its for finding your lost phone with a multitude of other useful features as well - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidlost), MHL cable ordered online and on the way...
So firstly, I plugged in the phone to my laptop and could not open the Internal Storage as I had a pattern lock set up. But thankfully, using Androidlost I could unlock the phone remotely (it resets and disables the lock). Once it opened I could see that my internal storage was full (around 11 gigs) and I could browse all my files. I didn't have the time to transfer my files at the time so I thought I will do it later and switched everything off. This happened once more when I accessed it from another laptop but again got interrupted and decided to back it up later.
Now strangely, the third time I tried this (and on multiple laptops now), the Internal Storage is only showing 7.5gb of 11gb used, and when I open it most folders are missing and most files are missing from the folders which are present. It may be some weird issue of MTP or MSC mode or something, not sure.
I've ordered an MHL cable so I can plug in to my TV and see if the files are present if I browse through the phone. Its really weird though, wonder how the files disappeared if they have.
I also tried to access my phone through an Ubuntu machine but was not successful in mounting it.
And I also tried to put in an SD card and browse that through a laptop, and I could do that but the internal storage remained the same.
One path I was following - using Android Lost I can open any app on my phone remotely. I can install any app using Google Play store on a browser. I can figure out the LAN IP address through my router/netscan. Is there any app you think I can install to remotely make my phone an FTP server or something so I can browse my files that way? The only problem is I cannot click 'Start' or anything which most such apps require so once the app is launched everything else must be remote-doable.
Thanks for taking out the time to read this!

Very lengthy question.
So you want to make your phone an FTP server. I have a great solution for that
Install the legendary ES File Explorer from the Play Store
Select Remote Manager from the option, it will turn on WIFI hotspot and also give a FTP address. Just connect your PC with wifi and enter the addresss in any web browser you want
That's all
Hit thanks if helped

So you want to make your phone an FTP server. I have a great solution for that
Install the legendary ES File Explorer from the Play Store
Select Remote Manager from the option, it will turn on WIFI hotspot and also give a FTP address. Just connect your PC with wifi and enter the addresss in any web browser you want
That's all
Hit thanks if helped

Hi Sushant,
thanks for reading the whole thing and for your suggestion.
I can install ES File Explorer. I can start the app remotely using Android Lost. Problem is, I cannot use my screen so I cannot go to the options and select remote manager.

i really really want to help OP but i cant think of the name of the app. its something like vlc, vhc, vcl, the point is. you can control the screen remotly over the same wifi network. i think if you could install the app remotly and install it on your computer, you would be able to unclock it remotly because you can see the screen on your computer.
if i remember the name i will post it for you. good luck OP!
Thank you Phurkus! I think you may be referring to VNC.
I found an app called 'VNC Server' that you can connect to using Real VNC on your computer. But after launching this app, it needs me to tap 'On' before it starts so again, no-go.
I'll search around for an app that uses VNC that doesn't require any set up on the android side besides just being installed and launched. Thanks again!

Question Just being honest.

So here's the deal. I'm very smart.. but this is not my forte.(phones) my daughter has screwed up My wife and I phone. Along with my other kids phones as well. She has a school Chromebook and somehow we started getting games installed on our phones from the playstore and some weird rogue games. Looking at the permissions they have access to everything any anything in our phones. I did a little research after probing through hidden files on her Chromebook she stays on gotcha cc. And all types of http only gaming sites. I we have to constantly turn off our camera and Bluetooth bc it turns on automatically. I found out she can access everyone's phone and has also somehow made like 2 networks on my router when she was grounded and was getting free data while her phone was off?? I can't delete this crap. Anti virus scans are useless. I noticed Android developer in her cookies and also some studio. I have this **** attached to my bootloader and no reset can remove it. We have a moto g stylus 5g (xt2131Dl) and anything I put in to remove via my computer/USB cable it instantly corrupts it. She also had a bunch of wallpaper apps that seem to migrate to our phones.calendars clocks and things have these crazy permissions. I noticed my email now is workspace..? Or work profile. Can somebody hit me up and help me get rid of this ****. Oh by the way. It's on my PC desktop now and laptop. It's like my whole phone is a virtual machine.. everybodys. I can't update past anything released in 2019 and 2020. Help!

Wow....
First I take away her phones and laptops so she couldn't interfere.
Try factory resetting start with a router then the phones,
Motorola does have a recovery program for the phones,
rescue-and-smart-assistant - Motorola
#hellomoto | Discover our new unlocked Android phones from motorola and stay informed about our offers and promotions.
www.motorola.com
Then install an antivirus like Norton or something like that and let it run,
In the case of the laptops I pulled and trashed the hard drives get new ones and default the BIOS before you put it all back together,
If you're using Microsoft get the installation ISO on a thumb drive if the PCS are major manufacturers like Dell, the BIOS contains the licensing key so you won't have to buy it again
Good luck if she's old enough I'd ever arrested.
Just my two cents.....
And change all your passwords once you've got a good clean PC to do it from.
Ps dont connect anything back to the internet to your done sanitizing it all.

Maddog 3030 thanks brother! Yeah it's ridiculous. Like my mind is blown completely.. i definitely confiscated the two phone/laptop. You'll never believe what happened.. she freaking signed in through Roku on her tv.. the only thing I left in her room electronically. Furious. But I'm very grateful for you response I'm definitely doing that step by step. I can't believe we have to run our phones in safe mode in my own house 24/7. I'll see if I can grab some more verbage from some of the things I find. Alot of it is encrypted copy pasted on blank notepad on the laptop. However I did see chrome://sysinternals and flags in the browser history. She had been on. I'm just lost as to how.. is it all the Google cloud developer stuff or Microsoft or azure..what else.. the Roblox/gotcha stuff which the files are being put into.. like everyday our phones have like "software" update at the top of the screen . Like no matter what I turn off it automatically turns it back on I'm thinking through Bluetooth. Hey Ive searched and searched is there any possible way to run the Microsoft tool without a PC? And only on my phone? The laptop I have is a hp and the desktop is the windows all in one 27in. Completely knocked windows defender out. Funny thing is she's never once had possession of or even used our phones before. Hadn't sent anything to us that we've opened to give it access. Sorry to make this so long lol. But I know you guys are the ones to explain this to. I've googled/duckduckgo/chat gpt/YouTube and searched hours and days for an answer. I get anything from the tct malware to the developers of multiple platforms accounts. Each have pieces that are spot on. But nothing exact. Our phones are straight talk. I've even called them. No help. Caught my attention when she was having data somehow at school and her phone wasn't even active. But the data on my wife and I phones were crazy high. The usuage from multiple apps were around 900mb each in the span of a week.. just didn't think there was any way Bluetooth had anything to do with it because of the distance from her school at the time to our home was way too far. But whatever it is it definitely calls for our Bluetooth to be turned on and our hotspot also comes on too. EVERYTIME. It's some feature of it. And also was a dead giveaway after so long of it happening. Everytime our Bluetooth , hotspot and mic access would pop on she would be in the house on her phone being sneaky.. recently when I had enough and took the electronics and discovered all this stuff on it.
