Hi guys
Due to unforeseen consequences during a holiday, a beer bottle got dropped on my phone and it cracked the screen. Now I want to take a backup of my photos before I send for repairs and I will appreciate any help I can get! Here are the details:
Phone: Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
Firmware: Stock Sony Kitkat, non rooted
Screen: Cracked, funny colours cannot see anything on the screen and touch does not work
USB Debugging Mode: Off
Wifi: On
Resources Available: OTG cable, AndroidLost is installed (its for finding your lost phone with a multitude of other useful features as well - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidlost), MHL cable ordered online and on the way...
So firstly, I plugged in the phone to my laptop and could not open the Internal Storage as I had a pattern lock set up. But thankfully, using Androidlost I could unlock the phone remotely (it resets and disables the lock). Once it opened I could see that my internal storage was full (around 11 gigs) and I could browse all my files. I didn't have the time to transfer my files at the time so I thought I will do it later and switched everything off. This happened once more when I accessed it from another laptop but again got interrupted and decided to back it up later.
Now strangely, the third time I tried this (and on multiple laptops now), the Internal Storage is only showing 7.5gb of 11gb used, and when I open it most folders are missing and most files are missing from the folders which are present. It may be some weird issue of MTP or MSC mode or something, not sure.
I've ordered an MHL cable so I can plug in to my TV and see if the files are present if I browse through the phone. Its really weird though, wonder how the files disappeared if they have.
I also tried to access my phone through an Ubuntu machine but was not successful in mounting it.
And I also tried to put in an SD card and browse that through a laptop, and I could do that but the internal storage remained the same.
One path I was following - using Android Lost I can open any app on my phone remotely. I can install any app using Google Play store on a browser. I can figure out the LAN IP address through my router/netscan. Is there any app you think I can install to remotely make my phone an FTP server or something so I can browse my files that way? The only problem is I cannot click 'Start' or anything which most such apps require so once the app is launched everything else must be remote-doable.
Thanks for taking out the time to read this!

Very lengthy question.
So you want to make your phone an FTP server. I have a great solution for that
Install the legendary ES File Explorer from the Play Store
Select Remote Manager from the option, it will turn on WIFI hotspot and also give a FTP address. Just connect your PC with wifi and enter the addresss in any web browser you want
That's all
Hit thanks if helped

Hi Sushant,
thanks for reading the whole thing and for your suggestion.
I can install ES File Explorer. I can start the app remotely using Android Lost. Problem is, I cannot use my screen so I cannot go to the options and select remote manager.

i really really want to help OP but i cant think of the name of the app. its something like vlc, vhc, vcl, the point is. you can control the screen remotly over the same wifi network. i think if you could install the app remotly and install it on your computer, you would be able to unclock it remotly because you can see the screen on your computer.
if i remember the name i will post it for you. good luck OP!
Thank you Phurkus! I think you may be referring to VNC.
I found an app called 'VNC Server' that you can connect to using Real VNC on your computer. But after launching this app, it needs me to tap 'On' before it starts so again, no-go.
I'll search around for an app that uses VNC that doesn't require any set up on the android side besides just being installed and launched. Thanks again!

I've tried using Resco Explorer 7.05/Total Commander 2.5.1/HTC's Network Plugin
For some reason i can't seem to map network drives.
In resco when i try to connect to a drive it tells me it's not accessible
In Total Commander it just doesn't connect
In HTC's Network plugin it writes: "Map Drive Failed"
-I'm using Vista on the comp i want to share folders in.
-Sharing works fine on all comps other than in my PPC (not password protected)
-It seems as not only it doesn't map the drive but doesn't acknowledge as anything but the computers on the network exist. no folders inside those computers. Thought about changing my ppc's domain but i don't know how to do that.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks
Yeah, VISTA FILE SHARING is a bit tricky! You not only have to share that particular drive / folder; you also have to check the settings in the SHARING CENTER - in addition you might have to adjust the file permissions as well.
Everything is perfect on file settings. i have a network running 3 computers and 2 laptops all sharing folders no passwords all permissions set. only thing not able to read the folders is the PPC. It finds the comps on the network but doesn't show the folders.
Did you MOUNT the drives in RESCO? You can't just click on it in the FILE EXPLORER - tap and hold, then select MOUNT DRIVE or FOLDER (depending on what you're sharing).
What RESCO VERSION did you use?
dude... i can't see drives nor folders.
i'm using 7.05
for the record, i tried looking at a winxp comp instead of a vista one.. can't see anything.
tried accessing through ip and name.. both come out with nothing..
I wish someone would help with this also. I have two computers and 1 ppc on my home network. My ppc(HTC Titan) used to be able to access both computers. Then all of a sudden it stopped working for my main computer(bedroom) with all MY files on it, but it still accesses files on my second computer(upstairs). On the main computer(bedroom) I can access the shared folders of the second computer(upstairs), but the second computer can't access the files from the main computer.I dont know whats wrong, but it seems more like a computer issue. I operate Windows XP on a Dell. The network folder used to work perfectly for me and I can't put my fiinger on what's blocking it.
This might be the wrong thread to post this issue(maybe the wrong website) but I thought I would ask since the issues are similar. If it's a ppc program for accessing the shared folders on a computer, then someone should have a How-To or a check list of how to set both up for the program to work fluently. Can somebody please post what you need to do on the computers to ensure sharability of the file systems.
The reason why this is so important to me is because I have been hooking-up my Titan since may 2008 and I am near completion. I'm totally done adding app's and the functionality of the device is superb except for this issue. Just bought a 16gb micro sdhc card and that works great. My girlfriend just ordered a seido 3500mah extended battery with the door to fit and a rubberized hard case for extended battery fit. I'm so excited about have the best phone setup of my life but I everytime I go back to this issue I get pissed off. It was all good til about 4 months ago and I don't know why it suddenly stopped working. Please HELP!!!
If the HTC Network plugin is not locating your shared files on your network, this likely suggest that it is an issue with your network settings. I suggest playing around with your security settings; however, I just recently had a problem accessing any of my shared files over any of my computers between each other and between my HTC Device. It just suddenly stopped working. I knew that I didn't change any settings myself and had tried many things to try to resolve the problem without success. I then decided to run my anti-spyware programs and Anti-Virus programs and let them run overnight. In the morning, the Anti-spyware removed several things - One was labeled as high risk and the others were low and the Anti-Virus found two high risk viruses. Everything was taken care of automatically and voila - I had no problems connecting to my shared files with my computers or my HTC Device. I ran the spyware and virus check programs again and everyting was clean.
the problem is that i can't even map the drives. i can see the comps on the network using the HTC Network Plugin but can't do anything other than that. when i try mapping a drive it tells me that i can't.. for some reason.
i removed password protection...shared the drive... nothing works.
I am assuming you are trying to connect through WIFI -
Make sure that you are actually connected to your network. My device has on several occasions connected to my neighbours wifi rather then my own - results in not being able to access shared folders
Through HTC NEtwork plugin you are exploring the computer for the shared folders right? You say you can see the computers - when you click the plus next to the specified computer in the network plugin are you getting any results at all there.
Make sure you don't have (I don't know if this is what it is called) MAC address filter or password. One of my friends has an open WIFI Network but has MAC Address filter which stops you from actually being able to use the network. You can connect but that is it. You wouldn't be able to surf the internet at all through WIFI either if this was the problem.
If it is none of these, Maybe it is a Windows VIsta problem - I don't know, I have XP
Do you have trouble connecting to other shared folders on other peoples WIFI networks also? (people who have XP)
-XP doesn't work either.
-i can see the comps, so i'm obviously connected to the network.
-i have mac filtering - see previous statement
-wifi works - see previous previous statement
dunno what to do.
Maybe something with your WIFI Settings on your device then?
Maybe you can review your settings on your device - Anythign that you think might be causing the problem - Describe it here, I will check my device settings (even though different devices - should still be the same - and will let you know if there are any differences. I must go eat dinner right now, but will check back after supper and bathing my daughter and putting her to bed. in a hour and a half two hours from now...
Set your desktop to support NTLM instead of just NTLMv2.
That way I got shared folders working with the HTC Network Plugin and my Vista desktop. Unfortunately some HTC apps (like HTC Camera) only expect your device to have two drives (internal ROM and flash card) so when you mount a network drive, they can't access your flash card.
Well, i can start searching, but if you don't mind, could you tell me how to do that?

I wish it worked for me too, but when I get to the "Group Policy Object Editor" I'm getting lost. I don't see that anywhere. Is my computer missing important files? I'm using windows xp. I hope I don't have to restore the whole computer to get the file sharing working. But if I gotta do it I will.the phone see's the computer, but no file sharing. It is that important to me to share files between my phone and computer. My home setup is sweet, and my phone is an extension of it.
Any Other Ideas
So, I have gone through and done everything suggested here. Lan Authentication, created private network, reconnect, everything I can think of...nothing seems to work
Does anyone have any further ideas about what could possibly work to create a LAN over WIFI?
Hardware:
Vista Business, Mogul 6.1 stock ROM 5.2.19208 and Folder Plugin build 30468.
DONE SO FAR:
Have created an adhock private network...connected to it on my device no problem. But when i go to search for my computer in network plugin under the browse menu it thinks about it and in the end doesn't see anything...
so, at wits end...I know I am new but most of the info over is fairly beyond my level I am certinaly a lurker and no info over at PPC Geeks with solutions...either way alot of the stuff over there comes from over here so thought I would see if anyone had some suggestions.
thanks for the help,

Not sure if this is the right place for this, however;
My gf's laptop had a virus on it that I didn't know about, I plugged my Samsung Galaxy S in, and suddenly I have a ".scr" clone of pretty much every folder on my phone. I deleted a load of them, plugged it back into the computer and sure enough they came back.
Now there are literally hundreds of the .scr clones on my phone.
Is there a way to delete them all?
Also, if this is not a virus and a bug instead, do let me know ha =]
You should probably try to format it to get rid of anything that may be in there. I wouldn't keep any of the files as they could have been currupted.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Quick update;
This is the virus found on the computer: http://www.virus-encyclopedia.com/virus/Network-Worms/other/worms1626.html
Not sure what relevance it has to the SGS as I don't understand any of it.
Download and install Everything.
Start the computer in safe mode.
Plug in your phone.
Run Everything OR right-click the phone's data drive and run everything.
Type in ".scr" in the search bar.
Delete every instance of this file.
Plug your phone out of the laptop.
Restart the laptop and scan it with a decent anti-virus (MSE).
NEVER PLUG YOUR PHONE BACK IN THAT LAPTOP AGAIN.
For extra security, you can now backup most of your important files, in case it gets corrupted (though I doubt it). And then format the sd card.
Hey Sygeek, about to try this out now, thanks for the help!
Also, this is the only laptop in which I can use my phone with, what are the reasons of not plugging it back in ever? (Except the obvious possible reinfection).

Just do a scan and make sure your laptop's virus-free (with that particular price). You should be fine then.
I very much doubt, that the virus would harm your sgs.
But it could have possibly copied it self over as it recognized your android as mass storage.
Hey guys, sorry I haven't updated in the past couple of days.
I think it was recognized as mass storage device Dark3n, you're right.
I couldn't figure out that search everything program, I did everything I was told but it didn't return any results, so what I did was as follows:
1. scan computer and delete all recorded instances of a virus.
2. restarted computer.
3. plugged phone in as mass storage device.
4. used my antivirus software to scan the phone (as mass storage device).
5. it then went on to delete all 382 instances of the virus.
6. unplugged phone, restarted it (i don't think i needed to, but I did anyway).
7. plugged phone back in and wallah, no more virus.
There was nothing missing, nothing wrong with android or anything, it was just an annoyance I guess.
Thanks for your help everyone.
I searched for this specific problem and couldn't find anything that helped.
1.) Phone Portal: I've used it before and after trying (unsuccessfully) to use it today I keep getting this error message:
"You have received an invalid certificate. Please contact the server administrator or email correspondent and give them the following information:
Your certificate contains the same serial number as another certificate issued by the certificate authority. Please get a new certificate containing a unique serial number.
(Error code: sec_error_reused_issuer_and_serial)"
Any ideas?
2.) USB Mass Storage: I did read a few threads about this issue and I guess it's just something that is a known problem with the Atrix 2??
With the issues with this phone (and it being my first "smart" phone...), I'm contemplating just returning it. There's gotta be something more stable/reliable than this.
Ive run in to issues where my phone just doesnt get recognized by the program. Only way I have fixed it is to do a factory wipe
Trying to not do that. Really shouldn't have to keep "factory resetting" the phone. Kinda irritating...
I use a mac so the connection is flakey at best, but I've found AirDroid to be a great resource for this.

As do I. But everything has previously worked fine. I haven't done anything different to the phone (completely stock, plus a few apps).
EDIT: Ok, so I may have found the solution. I just re-installed the certificates to my computer and it's connecting now.
After connecting your phone to your computer change the usn connection type to charge only and see if you can connect with adb. If so it is a problem with the crappy moto phone portal app
.. I have this issue on my mac book pro often.
You have to uninstall it and make sure it does not leave any thing in your preferences or library directories. Then reinstall the app on the mac.
If you can't connect with adb (make sure debugging is enabled in settings under applications first), return the phone and get an exchange for another atrix 2.

So far it's working again.
And I'm still on OS 10.4.*...so I can't use the adb commands yet. Working on fixing my optical drive so I can upgrade to 10.5-10.8.
As for the USB Mass Storage Device problems, you CAN NOT have ANY apps on the SD card. Sometimes apps install themselves automatically on the SD card, you just have to go back to Manage Applications->On SD Card->Click on all the ones with a green check mark and select "move to phone."

Just want to make sure on something here. Even if you move apps from the SD card to the phone memory, some app data still remains on the SD card right? And this setup will still have no problems with missing apps?
Hi everyone,
I am trying to transfer over to my new Nexus 5 32GB photos, videos, and music from my Galaxy S3. I have already copied the files from the S3 to my Macbook Air and am using Android File Transfer to deliver them to my Nexus 5. I find I can only manage a few seconds or so of file transfer before an error message pops up on the phone saying either "Unfortunately, the process android.process.media has stopped" or "Unfortunately, Media Storage has stopped". Then Android File Transfer says it can't access device storage and I have to unplug and reinsert the USB cable to try again. Any ideas as to why this keeps happening?
Thank you,
Jason
I got that a couple times as well transferring over some of my wallpapers from my GS3.
What did you do to resolve the problem? Is it an issue with the Nexus 5 or with the file transfer program?
Thanks.
I gave up on the Mac client except for short transfers of a very limited number of files at a time. Same problems you're seeing. Android File Transfer also doesn't always show an accurate picture of what's really on your SD Card.
If you're comfortable in the (OSX) terminal program using adb push and adb pull works flawlessly, and opening a shell on the N5 works just fine for seeing what's there, renaming and moving files, etc. No graphic interface, but it works really well.

I also have this issue. I thought it was an issue with my install and a factory reset didn't help.
Should I RMA this to do we see it as software. I'm also using a mac.

Steve
You could send an email to Google asking them to improve their Android File Transfer program, I guess... As I mentioned, I have switched over to using ADB and the OSX terminal program for any heavy lifting, and use AFT for the little stuff.
You could also run a program on your N5 and transfer files via WiFi. I have used WiFi File Transfer Pro with great success (though on my Galaxy Nexus; I haven't tried it yet on my N5). You run it on your N5 and it sets up a web server which you connect to with a web browser on your Mac (e.g., Safari or Chrome). Full graphic interface on your Mac, works over WiFi rather than USB.
Have you tried airdroid client? Works like a charme, just install on your n5 , you can then navigate in your phone, even root, from their server, used to reinstall all my media and titanium back-up file from N4 to N5

For the last several months, I can download and upload to my shared folders on my Windows 10 Pro PC, with no problems at all using FX Explorer, via SMB2. Never a glitz or slowdown, no problems whatso ever, no matter what ROM I happened to be running at the time.
The problem I am now having started yesterday, when I installed the new Windows 10 Pro x64 Fall Creators Update on my PC. I did a clean install, and set up the system from scratch. I did all my Network settings for sharing, just like before, and I set the Share permissions on 2 folders that I use for my OPO, just like before. Made sure that SMB2 protocol is enabled on the PC also.
I created a new LAN connection in FX Explorer to the new Windows OS, and tried to connect. Well, it sort of does connect, but mostly does not. When I try to access the shared folder on my PC, I can see the 2 folders in the Explorer list-view on my phone, but when I try to enter either one of the folders, all I get is a spinning circle for about a minute, and then get a report in big red letters that there was a "Network Error".
Well, that's a first on the OPO, for sure! To double check that I had set up the new Windows OS correctly, I connected to the shared folders using a laptop via WiFi, and it connects and reads the contents perfectly fine. I then gave it a go with a second PC in the house, and that PC also was able to read/write great to the shared folders.
OK.... so, the folders on the main PC are in fact, being shared, and other PCs can access them, but my OPO cannot, no matter what I try. Like I said, it sees the shared folders, but when I try to enter either one of them, it just craps out. I've tried 3 different file managers, all with the same results. I've tried anonymous connect, and password connect, both with the same result.
I even disabled the firewall on my PC to see if that was the problem (which I did not do for the 2 PCs that did connect) , and tried again with my OPO, but no joy, once again..
I am totally baffled. I have spent probably the better part of 6 hours on the net searching for solutions and answers, including this forum, but again, no joy, and then trying all things I could think of to do. Does anyone have any idea what can be causing this issue all the sudden? Any ideas at all as to why this is happening? You have no idea how much I would appreciate a solution to this problem. I even went so far as to restore a complete backup image I had made just before upgrading the PC, and with the old image installed on the PC, my OPO would once again connect to the shares perfect. So, not a hardware issue with my OPO either..
Thanks for reading this long post!!
