[Q] Format Pendrive via OTG without root - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have moto g 2014 which is on stock with no root.
And thats the only mobile i got with otg support at home, but since its new i cant root it as i dont want to end warranty.
Now the thing is my PC hard drive is busted and i want to install Ubuntu in my spare drive, i downloaded and transfered Ubuntu from phone to otg pendrive, since my pendrive has malicious autorun.inf i cant use autorun of ubuntu, when i try to delete it it regenerate and system cannot detect bootable pendrive. Is there way to remove that autorun.inf or format PD ?

External hard disk, bus powered, possible?

Hello,
just wanted to ask whether one of the Moto G users here could test whether a 2.5" external hard disk without own power supply works with USB OTG on the Moto G. (I can use, for example, my SGS2 with an external disk, but it has to have a power supply because the USB port doesn't deliver enough current.)
Thanks in advance!

I use my WD 1TB hdd with a OTG cable sooo, yeah i guess it works (im on pink kernel)
I have a 2 tb seagate external hard disk(2 TB Seagate EXPANSION 3.5 inch, uses external power source). It doesn't show in the phone. Actually, the device is connecting (a blue notification will light up in the hard disk), but it doesn't work. I have read somewhere that it will not work on NTFS file system, without root . So, I shrunk the hard disk and created a partition with fat32 file system. Still, it doesn't show on the phone. Any ideas?

Thanks. It works. I came to realize that this functionality is available with ES file explorer. Whenever, I try to access the disk, the application is closing unexpectedly. I couldn't make it work in ES. Is there any space limitation for that? I am trying to load a 2tb drive. It works fine with total commander though.

you can only access ntfs with total comander but if you root your phone then there is few apps on google play which will alow any file manager to open ntfs hdd...if not rooted i guess your only choice is total commander for now.
edit if your hdd is fat32 or exfat then es file manager can access it.

I posted this info in a facebook group and a few of the members are claiming that they are able use ES to mount the NTFS drive. Unfortunately, I couldn't do the it. The app is getting stopped and the drive is unmounted while accessing the NTFS partition. Anyway, NTFS file system is supported in ES(I checked their commit messages). I use ES a lot, it will be convenient if I could make it work.
thanks for your help

[Q] Memory expansion question (OTG)

I have got both an otg cable and a pendrive and I've already tried to make this sorage as default by the "adb devices"-command window method but when I installed an app in went to the internal storage. If not necessary I dont want to root my device so is there any no-root way to install apps or at least move their chace to the usb storage?

Not possible w/o root.
the adb parametter you've used supports only internal storage and sdcard and that's only if the device's rom allows it.
So there is no way to send apps chace to usb storage? (Moto g)

[Q] otg flash drive as external storage

cutting to the chase, im looking for a way to install my apps data and if possible apk files to a otg micro usb flashdrive (its a flash drive that has a micros usb conection that plugs directly into our phones micro usb port.) So far im able to read and write data to it in the sense that i can browse movie files music ect from the usb drive.
What i want to do is to be able to download a app from playstore and it installs automatically to the otg drive.
I tried foldermount and thats fairly inconvenient in the sense i have to first download file to phones internal storage THEN link it to my otg drive, this process is time consuming and irritating for my purposes.
Ive looked into link2sd but its telling me i dont have a 2nd partiton on my otg flash drive, but ive used eauseus partition manager and did that (made a ext 4 , also tried ext 3, partition as part of the overal 16gb flash drive) and no go.
i know this is possible on a custom rom as i did this with a micro sd card many android phones ago.
quick specs on my device
completed stock rooted and bootloader unlocked
latest busybox and su binaries.
no exposed modules or custom kernel.
8gig x1032 singe sim version
any suggestions be my guest.

otg usb write access

OK, I've been able to connect my USB drive to my phone and view movies and files, but today I wanted to write to it and it says permission not supported. I use stickmount and ntfs mounter to mount and have tried es file explorer and astro. Neither will let me transfer files to USB... I have had the sdfix installed forever now, and I can write to my SD card, but just won't let me write to USB through org cable... Any help?
The only USB drives I've been able to use OTG with the M8 are flash drives (which don't require external power). Are you using something that needs power?
I've used powered and an unpowered western digital my passport 2tb harddrives and been able to watch movies off them even in ntfs format, but my ntfs USB flash drive will only read, no write at all... I'm going to try formatting it back to fat 32 and see if I can write to it when I get home. I thought i wrote to it before, but i recently formatted it to ntfs to put a movie on it... I'll post back tomorrow.

TWRP can handle OTG if its a flash drive with a single partition
So if I format hard drive on single partition in fat32 then TWRP can handle it?
