Phone doesn't turn on unless it's plugged in and then it keeps rebooting every 2 seco - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone has been acting weird the past couple days. It would randomly reboot but when it rebooted, I would have to hard reset it for it to completely boot up. For the past couple days it would happen a couple times a day. Today it was doing it almost every hour. I was just waiting to get home from work so I could back up the phone and wipe and then it just turned off. I couldn't get it turned back on. When I plugged it into the charger it turns on the Google logo and then reboots over and over again. When I unplug it, it shuts off. I can't even get it to boot into recovery or bootloader because it keeps rebooting every couple seconds.

Just a guess, but I think you're power button is shorting out. See what others think.

Yea I've seen it in another post. That doesn't explain why the phone keeps rebooting as soon as I plug it in. But I have noticed that for the past couple days, the power button was becoming really sensitive as in I would hit the power button to turn the screen off and then it would immediately turn the screen back on. But if its a hardware issue then there's nothing I can do but contact Google to send me a replacement.

I think as soon as you plug it in the battery gets enough charge that it boots but then the power button shorts out and it reboots

I tried tapping on the phone by the button and it turns on the phone for a little bit. Same thing if I wiggle the power button. I'm convinced that's the issue.

TF700 Won't Turn Back On

I've had mine about 6-8 weeks. Is unlocked and has TWRP and Zeus 3.0. Used it this morning with no issues and it was about 90% charged. Took it on the road with me and I wanted to make sure it was fully charged so I plugged it into a power inverter car charger with a USB slot. After about 1 hour, I unplugged it and turned it back on. It powered up and the first Asus screen popped up. At that point it appeared to go black and I waited a few minutes. Nothing happened. I then tried turning it back and it will not turn back on or power up into TWRP. After holding the power button, the tablet has a small vibrate after 10 seconds. Upon plugging it back into the car charger, I noticed that the light is not working. This happens on and off the dock. I won't be able to plug it into a real power outlet until I get back home, so I'm posting to get a jump start on what to do if it still doesn't work at home.
Any advice?

Well I got home, plugged it in and the charge light came on. It still wouldn't turn on though. At that point, I figured I'd try a paper clip in the factory reset pin hole even though I read that it doesn't or shouldn't work when you're not stock. Well doing that powered the tablet back up and everything is the way I left it this morning.
Very interesting. Hope this may help others....or maybe I'm just lucky.

So the reset button works also with custom rom. Shouldn't be a normal thing? I didn't know that with custom rom it doesn't work.

Sounds somewhat similar to my tablet, had it connect to HDMI with dock it was just finished running video the low battery status prompt popped up, folded the tablet and connected with charger without disconnecting HDMI.
A few hours later unfolded the tablet and found a blank screen, first thought it had shutdown by itself, then by pressing power button it gave a short vibration feedback. With the display still blank kept on pressing power button each time it responded with feedback by vibrating and thought it is bricked.
Was wondering wildly what has happened to it, so kept on pressing and holding power button it finally reboots and vibrated long to indicate it is booting.
So it was strange why such error has occurred, and it happens it could have registered as turned ON but display ON and in reality display is really OFF.

Phone won't boot

Hey guys,
My phone shut off unexpectedly today and now won't turn back on. When I try to power it on I see the Google logo for a couple seconds and then it'll just shut off again. I tried holding the volume up/down buttons to access the bootloader, but right after I get to the screen it just restarts itself again.
Connecting to power (AC or USB) causes it to constantly reboot over and over, it just shows the Google logo for a couple seconds and then restarts again.
Any ideas on what I can do?

Provide more information for a starter - stock? unlocked bootloader? rooted? third party recovery? rom and if yes which?
If it's stock I'd RMA it.
If not what did you do immediately before the problem started?
try holding the power button for > 2 seconds which should turn it off completely, leave it on a wall charger for at least a couple of hours then turn it back on - I doubt it'll fix the problem but it's a simple thing to try...

Everything on it is stock, no ROM, not rooted. I had just taken it out of my pocket to check the time, put it back in my pocket and then felt it vibrate, took it back out to see it at the Google logo and haven't been able to get it started since. There was one or two times when it got past the Google logo and started to show the start up animation (the four colours bouncing around or whatever it is) but then it shut off again.
I tried holding the power button to completely turn it off, but plugging it into the wall charger just causes it to repeatedly attempt to boot like I mentioned earlier. I'll leave it for a while and hope for the best
Sounds like the mobo is bad. Most likely will have to rma it.

Maybe not. Sounds like a stuck power button to me.
OP does the phone just endlessly repeat this cycle? If so it's rebooting itself do to a stuck power button. One other users already reported similar issues and his power button was indeed stuck. Mash the power button hard for a minute to see if you can unstick it.

You got it!
Thanks so much, really wasn't looking forward to waiting for weeks while the RMA went through. The button didn't appear to be stuck - it was still clicky - but after mashing it for a minute it started up normally and appears to be fine now.
Did you flash any ROMs or anything previously?

brother the issue is gone, as mentioned "sticky power button" was causing it. read the thread before posting. btw thanks for effort anyway... haha
:laugh::silly:
Hi all. Sorry to reopen an old thread (but xda suggested I check here before making my own thread).
I think we have the exact same problem with a Nexus 5. Unfortunately, bashing the power button doesn't seem to be helping (and makes me feel slightly silly .
Anyone know how much effort it would be to take it apart to get to the part that's stuck? Any good instructions?
Thanks.
Weird, I have the same issue starting a few hours ago. I updated to the Oct 17 beta of Cataclysm then a hour later it happened. But was told it sounds like the power button issue.
Took it apart, tried to fix it. If plugged in I can get into the bootloader, but then it reboots again. I've tried tapping it on a hard surface, and it gets seems like it almost fixes it because it'll connect to my laptop but then reboots again.
Could it be the battery? It was fully charged but then died as I was deleting hundreds of photo's in Dropbox to move photo's over from my phone because it was full.
I too am running into this same issue. My screen cracked so I replaced the digitizer with some success. In the process I damaged the battery and needed to replace it. When I got the new battery and replaced it my phone is now unusable.
When unplugged: I turn on the phone and it's running the ANDROID animation then turns off.
When plugged in: I turn on the phone, the ANDROID animation runs then the phone restarts and continues the process over and over again.
I then flashed the phone with Marshmallow and the same thing happens. Except now that I flashed it I get the Android icon with the spinning gear. So; I flashed it back to 5.1.1, but the same result.
Could I have physically damaged something inside or is it a battery issue? Thanks for any insight.

[Q] Did my N5 just turn into a paper weight?

There isn't much in the way of details for what just happened to my phone but I'll try my best to be as detailed as possible.
I picked it up and turned the screen on then I hear a "pop" sound. (i don't know if it was a hardware pop or something that came from the speaker)
The screen grayed out a little bit, the system buttons on the bottom of the screen disappeared and horizontal lines appeared on the bottom quarter of the screen. The screen was also completely unresponsive.
I held down the power button to restart the phone, when I did it vibrated and the screen turned off. However, the phone won't turn back on now. Plugging the phone into the wall doesn't make the charging icon appear so I'm assuming that my phone just died.
The phone was bootloader unlocked, rooted, and had Franco kernal r14 on it. No overclocking, under-clocking, or under-volting.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I could try to either bring it back to life or confirm that it is indeed dead?
Hold both volume buttons and the power button and see if it will go into the bootloader.

Power button doesn't work. Volume Up + Power button doesn't work. VolUp/ VolDown + Power button doesn't work.

Try leaving it plugged In for awhile even though it doesn't appear to be charging. You could try to hold town the power button for thirty seconds.
It seems like it COULD be bricked. If it is, I would contract Google for a RMA. Their not going to spend there time fixing it just to see if you were rooted or unlocked.
Good luck.

I kinda figured since it's bricked they wouldn't be able to tell. I'll try leaving it on the charger overnight and see what happens. Thanks for your input.

Phone Won't stay On

My Nexus 5 just crapped out.
Phone constantly reboots every second.
It turns on, shows the Google splash screen, then turns off, then Google Splash screen then turns off.
It happens very quickly stays on the splash screen for about 1 second then turns off.
If I hold down the Volume Down button, it shows the Bootloader for 1 second or less then shuts down.
If I hold the power button long enough it'll turn off. Now ANY power source plugged in or a QI Charger, it'll turn on and keep powering off and on and off and on again.
Now it actually won't turn back on without any power source. Not sure if it's out of battery or not, but it's not helping, since if I plug it in, it turns on then turns off right away, over and over and over and over again. No way to charge it like normal.
Anyone have any ideas? It's running stock with xposed mod.
I've never had this happen of all the Nexus phones I've had and others.
Phone was working fine today then I went to open the camera and it rebooted and then this.
Wow, yup just I suspect, I think power button is messed up.
I have a rubberized case on it, if I tilt it sideways with power button facing down, and just keep banging the side of the Nexus 5 on the table, it will power up and boot up properly.
Once I stop, power menus shows up and or it'll hard reboot.
The power button itself doesn't feel broken, when I press it I can feel it being pressed.
Now I have to figure out how I can wipe and lock the bootloader while doing this....

Phone won't start unless I shake him hard

Yeah so it's kind of a strange title but I'll explain:
My phone dropped from about knee high. It has a great spigen armor case and no damage was done but I added this line just because maybe that's where things went bad.
Also, I changed it's battery a couple weeks ago.
Anyway, I was watching a video when all of the sudden my phone just turned itself off (about a day or two since it's dropped, so I don't think that was the problem because I never had any problems with it). I thought it might have been my battery but I changed it back to my old one and still nothing has changed.
The problem actually is that I hold the power button and it won't turn on. But if I do it while shaking it or hitting it against the palm of my hand, then it turns on, displayed the Google logo and then turns off after about 2 seconds.
I tried holding down the volume key and still nothing, it just won't boot.
When I plug it into a charger, it displays the Google logo and then reboots, and this problem is repeated. Logo, reboot, logo reboot, etc.
I really don't know what to do, please help me guys
Sounds like a stuck power button. It's not that uncommon. You might have to get it replaced at a cell repair store.

I disagree. When the phone turns on, it starts to load the Android logo after the Google logo but for exacly half a second and it always turns off at the same point.
The button clicks, and it is very easily pressed. I also tried to push it back with a small screwdriver after I opened the back cover and still, no change.

When the phone is off plug it to the charger. If it keeps restarting at google logo then I am 90% sure it is a power key problem.
How do you know if your phone is male or female?

Well, looked into it and it was indeed the power key. I started clicking it very rapidly while it was booting and I managed to turn it on.
Now everytime I click it, it either turns the screen on and off as if I pressed it twice, or it just gets stuck and does that thing it did earlier with the bootup.
Is there a way I can fix this myself instead of taking it to a repair shop?
