So two days ago Apple finally did it, they released their smartwatch that has been rumored for the last year and a half now, if not longer. The good news for Android.. I'd like to say we still win. Especially in terms of design (Moto 360). What do you guys think, are you still pro Android Wear or now on Apples side? Or do you not feel like smartwatches aren't even worth it right now?
To be honest, I feel like this entire subsection of products is still in its infancy stages. I feel like this could be a viable technology outlet but no one's really sure what to do with it yet. We're on the road there, but it isn't perfected and no ones cracked the case of what would make these things MUST-HAVE.
It really depends what other devices you have. If you have Android devices, an Android Wear device will work with them. If you have iOS devices, you get an Apple Watch.

Agreed. The Moto 360 is definitely the best looking, but it's freaking thick. The iWatch isn't bad looking, but is only compatible with the most recent of iPhones, which is effing stupid. I've never seen anybody wearing a smartwatch, but then I don't live in NYC or LA, so I don't know if it's really trendy yet or not. Frankly, I think the smartwatch is either, as you said, in its infancy, or an attempted fad that'll never become popular. They're big, heavy, thick, and require daily (if not more) charging. I'd wager that many people that buy a smartwatch will use it for a few days, maybe even a few weeks, but give up on it because it's just not worth bothering with.
this whole trend of smart watches is just ridiculous , seriously i had big hopes with apple of innovating the smart watch (and wasnt expecting anything from motorola and LG , samsung is out of equation) but they did nothing , ugly over priced full of gimmicks with one day battery ( LOL ) , funny and sad how corporates are looking for pathetic ways to milk people as if planned obsolescence wasnt enough with their flagships problem is people who dont even *need* them will end up buying them only to realize after playing it for a week that they dont really *need* it.

I agree to an extent but this is the state of technology these days. Instead of holding onto a product and really delving into how to make it unique and innovative, there's a need to just get on the market quickly. From there they can update, hear complaints, see results and whatnot. It makes sense to see how people respond and what uses they find for it, so it's hard to say that it's a completely bad idea IMO.

I feel like Android phone manufacturers are making so many new phones no one can even keep up anymore. (Unless you have thousands of dollars to invest into phones). I just bought a droid Charge in August 2011 and pretty much there are 3-4 phones out or that will be out that are better in the next 2 weeks.
Personally I think they are making to many phones to fast and they are not giving the older phones the updates they need. This could turn in to a major fail. Just wanted to hear some other peoples thoughts on this issue.

get used to it br0. It's the cycle of technology. You can NEVER keep up. Just love what you have.
I do love what I had. That is why I just sold it on ebay. LOL I want the latest and greatest, but this is getting ridiculous. Who in the heck wants to hang with their old droid when there are 20 better phones out there within a year. Either Apple is on something or they are on to something. 1 new phone ever 6 months to a year and people go nutz for the fricking thing.
My advice evaluate the phone technology and its likelihood to be supported. These are the 2 most critical items to consider.
I have had a Galaxy phone since its release and I waited for it for 5 months before getting it............ because I knew it was going to have tech that would endure for a while. Now, we have the dual cores everywhere. Beware, just because it is dual core does not make it a great phone. Make sure to check everything out, and make sure it will be supported. Finally, As soon as you get a dual core in ........2012 there will be quad cores..........and so it goes...........

Well, yeah. Then commercial groups offering spaceship travels for big money definietly shouldn't do it, but wait until everyone can afford it.

Then the problem is clearly you and not the manufacturers. Ask yourself why you always want the latest and greatest. What significant and meaningful difference does it make in your day-to-day life.

The carriers will never update their phones as quickly as we would like, but we have CM7, Miui and other distributions to fix that.
Do you upgrade a laptop every 3-4 months? Likely not.
'phones' are becoming similar.
Also, Android being a powerful free OS allows many phone makers to get in on making a smartphone quite quickly. This is a good thing, not a bad one.
I dont go to the food store and complain there are too many different types of bread. Choice is a luxury.
/firstworldproblems
There is a problem.
The problem isnt choice or speed of new handsets. Its the fact these handset makers seem to be going out of there way to hold back features just to create more options.
Nearly every choice you make you sacrifice something that shouldnt be. This last year Samsung was incredibly guilty of that.
We shouldnt have to pick between the phone with the best camera or the best screen 3g or 4g when theyre released with identical specs within a few weeks/months of each other.
You end up with a situation where IMO since 3GS/NexusOne were both available at same time theres basically no best handset to get. They all have some glaring downside that often seems intentional. Nexus Galaxy having weak gpu/pentile screen/5mp camera for a flasgship phone is the calling card of this awful trend.
Hopefully Google buying Moto means a true flagship android phone will be out in the future. HTCs lousy digitizer selection , and Samsungs half assed approach really are getting on my nerves.
Win7 just needs more options PERIOD.
Actually I'm happy I'm a reviewer and I get all the newest models for a week only. I never have to regret my choice and invest in next generations and upgrades.
That's why I chose a mid-tier device - If review phones must be wiped, I can still keep my data on my Ace and customize how I want.
It's good that technology is moving so fast. You buy a thing, but there are many others that haven't bought this thing. If they were iPhoners, they would have to wait until June (or October in 4s case) till the next model.
But Androiders and WP7ists just go in the store and buy tech that is up to date, because it is released just weeks ago and so specs are always at its zenith.
Phone manufacturers are really going out of control. They produce phones with specs that are missing, then include them in their next offerings. but then they produce phones which are pretty much the same as the ones before except for 1 or 2 upgrades to increase sales.
They like to make their products 'diverse' but if you look on the bird's eye view of it. It becomes clear that they are just going for quantity without quality products.
Why don't they just drop down a killer phone whose specs will stay for at most 2 years?
Better buy a product which suits you for the next year or two
I think it's great, actually. People only THINK they need the latest and greatest device, when they don't. I rather have 5 new phones come out in a 2 week period than having to wait for something for a year or so. With android, there's little chance of you not finding the PERFECT phone for you. (Mines is the SK4G, I can care less about any other phone now)
The only problem I see with rapid phone releases is updates. I highly doubt the Sidekick 4G, even with it coming out earlier this year, will see ICS... let alone Gingerbread, because they're forgotten about/ not important enough.
Honestly, if you have a rooted GB device, and it runs how you like it, do you need to worry about the newer phones?

Because, short of Apple and their ability as a small company producing both hardware and software, there is not profit in that. Companies are out to make money, it is not their fault that the wealthy people of the world have decided that they must have the latest phone no matter what, that's on the consumer.
I bought a Nexus One in April 2010 and I've not felt tempted to replace it before now because it runs Gingerbread and newer phones didn't seem to offer that much more.
However, the release of the Galaxy Note with the stylus for accurate screen pointing and screen large enough and with sufficient resolution to display entire Web page makes an upgrade now worthwhile to me. Zooming and panning a small phone screen across a Web page to find specific points of interest is a pain and I look forward to leaving that experience behind.

Because if they play apple's game, they will lose horribly. Apple is apple, and apple is the standard whether you like it or not. When a average person compares a phone, what does he compare it to? The iPhone of course. So a manufacturer will not survive if they only release a oh so powerful phone every year or two, simply because they do not have nearly as much of a fan base apple has.
it's really awesome imo
always something to be excited about
I love waiting for a phone I've been wanting to drop in price, and while I wait, an even better phone gets released lmao

I have seen first hand proof of this working. I had an evo 3d. Htc decided all futre devices would have locked bootliaders well that made alot of people angry. Someone posted a thread on xda suggesting we let htc know that is not gna fly. So it turnd out thousands of people got on there facebook wall and twitter. Guess what the next day htc released a statement saying that they wanted too keep there coustamers happy and that the bootloader would be unlocked. They were. Id like to be able too have a device and not have too get a new one juzt because moto or htc or sammy wants too put them out constantly get people too buy them and then ditch them and out out another. The atrix is 100 percent capable of runing ics and theres no excuae for it l not too recieve it just because moto wants people too buy new devices every couple months. I know many many people feel the same way well as i said we have the power too change that if people would stop bickering and take it seriously. And also if moto started supporting devices longer not just bug fixes but the new android flavors. Id definately make my next device a moto it would do nothing but benefit them

Music to my ears
I think the worst thing about this is how it will affect the everyday Samsung phone user. They've already shown they are willing to even preemptively alter software (local search) in order to avoid lawsuits and after the court loss it's only going to get worse. What updates are on the horizon as Samsung scrambles to avoid more jury "decisions" and patent cases? Sure, maybe it forces them to do something new and imaginative and finally dump the questionable TouchWiz, but the short term could mean bad OTA updates for people who bought an amazing phone. I know I won't be going back to stock.
Some people are wondering why Samsung/Google don't wage war back holding parts or search hostage, but the reality is that they need Apple more than Apple needs them. The gigantic marketshare they hold means Google needs their users eyeballs, and Samsung cannot lose the income from supplying iComponents. They even released a statement during the trial stating they considered the divisions absolutely sealed from one another, signaling loud and clear to Apple it won't even be a bargaining chip.
I hate this. It's all the more sickly ironic when you think back to Apple fighting to survive in Microsoft's shadow, now playing an even worse villain. And Microsoft is probably the one who wins from all this. It seemed like maybe the general tech press was starting to get wise and there was a small voice of outrage beyond just the Android community starting to form in the face of this bulls***, but now that the iPhone and mini-iPad are launching it's just going to be months of the gadget press fellating a minor upgrade in software and form as Apple steamrolls more competitors.
I never understood the Apple vs Microsoft debate, like If you want a PC, just buy one and forget about Mac, who cares it's a computer. But in light of current press, I see the reasoning and I also see why Apple needs to die. Shame on them
ahh thank you. this forum needs heavy moderation!!
I would also guess that the parts Samsung sells for iPhones are under an ironclad contract and would just create another law suit. Maybe when that contract is up Samsung will double the price of those parts to get their money back.
Just be prepared for all the ones who havent purchased the SGS3 yet. Apple is now going after 4 more devices that Samsung has released since the trial to remove them from the market, and the SGS3 is one of them. It was all over Fox News yesterday. Greedy ass Apple cant take the fact that Android is overtaking them by storm, and they cant compete with the technology and speed Android now has over Apple.
What I am going to find interesting is what other technology Apple will try to use(if they try) since Samsung holds a Lte patent
Samsung already said they are ready to file a suit if the next Iphone has Lte
Imagine the Iphone being banned in the US..... heaven....
From what I understand Samsung is going to keep to its promise and take it to an appeals court that deals more directly with patents.
I saw a list of just a few of the phones that were listed that apple wanted to ban from sales, some of which like the droid charge are 1. out of date and not a big seller anyway and 2. look nothing like the iphone. It amazes me to see how low a company will go to corner the market in the smartphone/tablet industry.
I also know that the galaxy s 3 is a target of apples and the court date is sometime in 2014, which doesnt make a bit of sense since by that time the galaxy s 4 will be out or had been out for sometime and a newer phone would be on the horizon. So the lawsuit to ban the product will be irrelevant, but apple will still try to make a profit off it due to patents.

Part of the strategy is to hamper development of the S4, the same as Apple actually had a hand in the S3 (and later versions of the S2) being more round-ish than the original S2. Samsung will probably have to limit certain features of any new phones to avoid the traps Apple has laid (like having the product banned for using unified search, slide to unlock, spelling prediction, and any number of bone-stupid things Apple should have no business dictating to anyone else.) In dodging Apple's bull****, Sammy has more limited design options for the S4 right out of the gate- and like the S3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 that clearly they made look nothing like Apple's stuff... they'll probably STILL get sued.
I like to remind people how Apple blocking sales of the Galaxy Nexus reveals their true motivations. Why? The GNexus doesn't look anything like any of Apple's products, but more importantly, it runs STOCK Android- not Samsung's touchwiz. Apple could basically have sued ANYONE using the same bull**** reasons as they did to block the Nexus, but they once again went after a flagship device that they don't want in the market.
So next time you hear some Apple-apologist say the predictable: "Well if Samsung would just stop copying Apple blah blah blah..." just slap them. It's already public record: Apple sues to block Samsung's most successful designs no-matter-what. Resembles iPhone or not / Touchwiz or completely stock Android. Doesn't matter.

Apple is a lot of things, but one of them is not stupid. There is just no way that they have been this aggressive toward Samsung if Samsung truly does have this supposed hammer in their back pocket. Worst case, Apple has to pay fair licensing fees for standards essential patents--anything beyond that just doesn't pass the smell test IMO.
The latest iPad is 4G LTE, so I'm not quite sure where people get this idea from that Apple has/will have any problem using LTE in the iPhone 5.
Ha
I just came back to the droid universe, after my wife and I went thru seven Droid X2s. Verizon gave me a free move to an iPhone 4s, and I enjoyed it for a time, but I needed the LTE due to my iPhone really not doing well with data at my office. If I ever thought the battery was crap on the iPhone, I was sorely mistaken, it's terribad on this S3, and that's with Mobile Data turned off, using wifi. That being said, I am really enjoying the new hardware, and thank god there is a decent amount of community support for this device. And LTE just blew the socks off my fiber home internet connection, hell, it doubled it!
Side note, why do people compare hardware + software to the android OS? Pick an android phone and compare it to an iPhone. Don't lump every damn manufacturer of an android phone and compare it to an iPhone. The problem, for me, has always been that the iPhone has a bigger selection of apps and a LOT better accessories. Sounds simple, but when you can't find that exact case that suits you, owning an amazing device with little support... it sucks. I would never trade my new iPad for any android based tablet... can't say the same for phones tho. (although my iPhone just sold for $357 on ebay, which would never happen with any one year old android phone) I pray that Samsung sticks with this handset design... that will foster a lot of aftermarket support. Manufacturers don't like change. Make the internals better, make the the software amazing... just keep a form factor around for a bit. THAT'S why apple does so well, they have a ton of aftermarket support for a crap product that's a year or two late.

I'd have to think that you have a defective phone. Battery life on this beast is incredible. I easily get 24 hours and 4-5 hours of screen time on this phone. And that is with a much bigger screen than the iPhone. As far as resale value, that will be determined when the next phone comes out. I got $280 for a refurb rezound. Not bad.

Yesterday was spent just getting situated with the phone and rooting it. Today I am going to read up a ton more and get smarter on it, hopefully, lol.
Regarding cases and such, you misunderstood me. I know we're both S3 owners, and we might even consider ourselves fanboys... but take the time to be honest about everything that goes with a phone, including accessories. We WANT to have the plethora available to us like Apple does, but we're not even close. Samsung finally stopped releasing different types of the same phone to different carriers, which helped a ton. Where you are not looking at is every other flippin Android device out there. I was a very early owner of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Very little community support for that device, even here on xda. Usually "community" turns into iPad or Galaxy Tab bashing... and there's not a ton of residual community. At least, for now, the S3 is sexy and everyone seems to enjoy them. The minute the S4 comes out... next year?, this community will dry up. That's the problem for me... I have seen what a large community can do for a phone, which touches almost every part of my life. Hell, I almost bought a rezound over this phone, because of the screen and the radio... but that community might as well be called a ghost town.
Quick question, are you saying a stock S3 is better than an iPhone with regards to battery life? I just started testing out the stock battery tools... trying to not load up a rom yet, as I seriously have owned the phone for less than 24 hours and want to at least know what I am fixing first, lol.
this flame war is getting annoying
Samsung Galaxy S II plus is probably the worst phone I've ever had. In it's time of course. But certainly and by far the worst of the three smart phones I've had. Or I can't really call it a smart phone because it wasn't exactly smart. I mean the look was fine. But that was about it. Before the S2 I had a SONY Experia Mini Pro which I found rather nice. But after it had died - as a Mac user I thought of iPhone and considered it unjustifiably expensive. Over the top. So I looked around, read all the reviews and bought the S2. That's where the drag started. And it went on for another three months! It never broke down it never froze but it never really worked or delivered results either. There always seemed to be some inexplicable BUT. As someone used to the indulgent efficiency of Apple products I couldn't bear it any longer. Some three day ago a good man replied to my advertisement - with a deep relief I gave him the S2 and 120€ and he gave me a worn-out iPhone 4s. All the problems I'd have with the tiam-tun somehow miraculously evaporated the first night and I woke up into new days without a device that never really works, presumably speaks some outlandish language you just can't understand, which keeps being a nuisance and is not much of use.

You're absolutely right - it does not make coffee, it does not help me to shave, neither does it help me to get ready. I don't need, want nor expect it to. Do you? Or do you know a phone that does that? I certainly wouldn't want one. Anyway, there' s only one crucial mistake in what you're saying - I'm not at all unhappy - you see I've sold the Samsung. And bought an iPhone. But I'm actually quite the opposite of what you're suggesting - I don't play games on my iPhone or Macs - not even "social media" games - in fact I use very few apps. I don't even use my iPhone to tell me the time - I use a proper wristwatch. I don't even use my iPhone to wake me up - at night it's switched off and the role of waking me up is left to my alarm clock. But yes - I do expect my phone to phone. And text and direct me to places and remind me things, generate bank codes for internet banking, take and send pictures and that's about it. And I do expect the device to do it in a smooth way. That's why I'm happy with iPhone - there are no other reasons. By the way you're saying that your wife to be is much smarter than me? How do you know? Anyway it's so rare and therefore interesting to hear that from an Indian man.
The problem with nearly all active Apple haters is that they have a very hazy picture of the object they so passionately talk about. They've never used one. They just assume. They see the people queuing up for the latest Apple product in the news and assume that this is the Apple user. Envy flies high. The reason why Apple products keep their value over time so much is that they keep on serving you. I bought my iMac, MacBook and iPhone all second hand.
When a friend of mine years ago bought iPhone and kept telling me how wonderful it was I thought: "What's the deal - it's just a phone" - I didn't understand. It took me years to buy a smart phone - SONY Experia Mini Pro. And I thought: "What a brilliant thing to have". Then I bought the Samsung and the fight started. Had no option. Eventually I bought an iPhone and only then understood that other "smart phones" are just copies of the original. But just like me - you wouldn't believe or understand until you use one yourself. It's the same story you get with Apple computers…
Quite recently a university I know were given some EU grant for which they bought 50 MacBooks for the teachers, most of whom had presumably used Windows computers. Do you know what happened? There were 48 happy teachers. Two got back to Windows. 4%. And that's that. Save up and buy one - there's about 96% chance you'll love it the way Apple users love their device. It's beyond words…
It's not the design, it's not the apple, it's not the numbers. My father - when I showed him the iPhone and said something about the camera - asked me how many pixels it had. I said I had no idea. Then I showed him a picture and he went "Oh yeah." That's the story with Apple products - they are for those who don't care about the numbers and technical stuff - they are for people who are after what it does.
After I started using my iMac I entirely forgot I had a computer. I'm not interested in it the slightest bit. The device itself has ceased to exist. Never lets me know it's there either. No breakdowns, no moans. But what has come is work I'm now able to do. Suddenly I'm able to do much more work, in much better style and much higher quality. The device has completely vanished from sight. Suddenly I happen to have the capacity. Which in part had previously been given to the device. Now it's mine. Long gone are the times when I had to phone someone all the time being unable figure out how it's done. No more Windows, no more Android. No - never again - thanks! I want to use a tool which works for me, not against me.

Dear apple fanboy.
S2 Plus is a BUDGET PHONE. iPhone is a Premium class phone. Do not expect miracle from phone worth 200$

I'm not a blind Apple fan. I don't care what the name is. I don't care about the apple. I'd be perfectly happy with a different brand. In fact I have recently given back an Apple product because it was not doing what it was supposed to. In fact I had bought two other "smart phones" before the Apple. And I quite liked the SONY. It's only thanks to the fact that the SONY died and the Samsung so heavily failed. It's not about the brand. Not at all. And nor about price…
I certainly didn't expect miracles from the Samsung phone. But I didn't expect it to be as bad as it was either. I bought an iPhone 4s for as low as 240€ and can say that compared to the overpriced copy it indeed is a miracle - I certainly never imagined it to be this good. It's like going from a Windows PC to an iMac - first you can't believe it. Pull your socks up and save up for one - you won't be disappointed.
hello everyone, recently i had some connector-related problems with my s7edge so i'm about to buy my next phone.
i think that, in this "hardware overkill era" (personally i think that from circa 2018 the effective changes in speed became very small and unnoticeable in terms of usage; apps open just a tiny little faster ), choosing a good used it's better than ever. since i don't have much to spend (gotta apply for masters ya know) i was thinking about getting a s9plus or a OP6t. that is because i like a lot the design of both the phones and the different functions (from water resistance, qi charge, better photos and nice notch/slide-less design by s9p to the in-display fingerprint sensor and veeeery nice software of the op6t ). I really wish there was something around 250/300€ with the functions of both but couldn't find it, and since i can actually buy a still premium phone like those for just 250, probably i'll just stick with one of them. which one?
i’d really like to get a stock aosp/pixel experience with the samsung but can't find a good rom, should i choose the op6t? what is the actual modding situation from the inside?
Honestly, just as I'm looking around for info about root for Android 10 on the S9+, Its depressing me quite a bit. Seeing that this phone isn't that old, and yet, there's so little activity for it and its non + variant. It's really surprising when In the past I had far less popular and expensive phones, and there were A LOT more people working on custom ROMs and a bunch of other stuff, when they were far older than this phone currently is. Don't get me wrong, there is people working on it, but not many.
I'd definitely look for a different phone at this point if you want a new one.

I remember the days, i have the s10+ unlocked version (U1) and i upgraded to android 10 and honestly not that hyped about it either. I still have my Note 3 and Note 4 and play with them because i miss the rooting and my freedom to do whatever i wanted with MY phone.
This trend where we can root and unlock will come to an end just like Apple killed jailbraking Samsung is slowly following Apple like a little sheep started with phone jack to locking bootloaders for them rooting is cancer that needs to be eradicated asap.
I bought the s9+ from amazon last week the G9650 and plan on rooting it later because i miss it that much but i'm staying on Pie (9) for a while longer
I wondered about this too and the most plausible explanation is that many of the great Devs aren't from 1st world nations and the phones can be pricey for them to get hold of to produce ROMs etc.
This is especially holds true since high end mobile phones are $1000+ now and their monthly pay might be a couple of hundred.
Honestly I think modding is no longer that fun like before with many security updates to android that complicates
and dicourages hobbyist developer..nowadays it will cost a lot of effort and money for developers just to come up with something..
Wanna play with admin rights and do whatever you want with a smartphone like the good old days ?
Buy a OnePlus device and enjoy.
Stay away from Samsung.
If you care about modding go with oneplus or a pixel device. Stay far away from Snapdragon Samsung devices.
How does everyone here feel about phone tech becoming more and more stagnant without any major breakthroughs for probably half a decade now? 2010's were a pretty exciting times with so many valid and unique choices on the market, but lately everything is bland and pretty much the same in terms of features and aesthetics. Differences between major and minor brand flagships is literally just paying for that Crapple logo or not. That excitement of getting a new phone is just about fizzled out these days.
Yeap. All hype up with little to show, like 108mp cam sensors when even top of the line pro cams use under 21mp for their full frame sensors!
Android Google went to Apple hell too with scoped storage.
That's why I bought my second Note 10+ 5 months ago. The first one still looks, feels and runs like new... it's just plain fun to use. Still running on Pie like a bat out of hell.
Unfortunately for Samsung, so far, the N10+ marks their zenith. Try not to try so hard to drop the ball Sammy...
Samsung's new definition of a power user; someone that uses their phone as a right hand, hand warmer
Honestly advertising aside, Sammy wasn't a hot potato since like S5 which is when I dropped my interest in em. And god-awful blueberry aside, no one really bothered with a physical QWERTY that is catastrophically lacking today.
I will say that I am glad to have a slew of "mid-range" priced phones with top specs available like ZTE has been doing.

I lucked out with the N10+ which I bought near it's release date. I'm holding a dual drive, 1+tb PC with a near perfectly factory color calibrated display in my hand. Gene Roddenberry dreamed about having something like this.
Samsung's and Android's progression is not linear or consistent and now backsliding 2 steps with every step forward. They seem to think hype sells like a traveling hawker selling rot gut tonics. Hey it worked for the Covid flu... until the ugly truths started coming out.
Your only as good as your last phone sold, something they should understood by now... not.

Haha, right? And then of course, US is locked out of Huawei because best believe those phones would erase Samsung from the consumer dictionary in an instant here.

The CCP is pervasive and embedded throughout all Chinese manufacturing. This threat is completely underrated. You see the robo dogs with bullhorns that they have policing their locked down cities -now-? Trust them?
