Well, my wife went and dropped her Nexus 5 today. Screen is a total mess. Seems appropriate that Google has a free replacement policy for Nexus 5 phones (special terms apply - and luckily are met in this case). Her phone is rooted and TWRP is installed.
Here is my question: Can I simply do a full image backup and store to external SD storage (may I take the time to recommend the Meenova card reader?), and after receiving, rooting, and installing TWRP on the refurbished replacement phone, restore the image backup?
It would seem like the easiest way to go about things, but because it seems so easy, I'm naturally sceptical there is some hidden "gotcha" that prevents this option (Phone serial numbers, or some other device specific data that won't translate well).
Any thoughts would be helpful, as we will need to get the wheels rolling on the replacement quickly.
Thank you in advance,

Yes, it'll work. But do not backup or restore the efs partition

Yesterday I noticed the signs of screen burn in. Too many football games and poker games watched on mobile. I think the culprit is the video control bar in the jplayer app.
Now i need to unroot my device and visit the Verizon store.
1. where can I download the stock ROM for FP1 to replace eclipse ROM?
2. Can i flash stock ROM without loosing customer data?
3. I have titanium backup and would like to know what I need to backup so when i get a replacement device I dont have to spend forever reseting home screens and other settings. I'd like to duplicate the old palm days where i could plug in the device and sync it back To the way it iS Now.
4. Is screen burn in prevelant on smart phones and how do i prevent it from happening with a new device?

I remember someone else posting about screen burn recently. I believe they fixed it by displaying a pure white screen (via an image?) for a period of time.
Did some searching. Here's the thread about it.
Thanks for the advice. I'll see what i can do and post after lunch.

Screen burn is only prevalent on OLED screens...the price we pay for the picture quality. Even then, it's not extremely common. The white screen can work, but you can't "loosen" the pixels the way you could on old displays. OLED pixels literally just wear out over time and with use and the only thing you can do to alleviate burn in that has already happened is wear out the pixels around it so it isn't as obvious.
There isn't a stock restore available yet. I was going to try to dump it this weekend, but I never got time. If there was one available, I'd be wary of coming from a custom rom without wiping data...there are too many changes that could cause issues.
So then what's the best way to get back to stock so I can visit Verizon? I don't have to keep data...but won't be able to use titanium to restore. Right?

Well titanium backup and then either pull the sd or copy the contents to your pc. Odin ep4d and take the ota. IF YOU DECIDE TO LEAVE THE SD IN THEN FORMAT IT because CWM and some root apps leave stuff on there.

Ok. I'll flash EP4D and get the OTA upgrade. Then it's off to Verizon.
Hopefully they won't give me any trouble and a new phone.
Since the phone will be stock until I get to the store, is there any way to restore apps and settings without downloading and reentering info? I don't want the phone to look too stock. I want it to be gently used and worthy of a swap. are there any non root backup programs to help with this that would not tip them off to the fact that the phone had been rooted?

You worry too much, just download Go launcher Ex from the market and change your wall settings and drop a few icons on the home page. That's it.
Are you telling me to unroot and then add go launcher and customize it a bit to not make it ootb stock? that i can do. Thx.
I do tend to over think things. I just want things to go smoothly.

Im getting a new phone. Should be here today.
Rather simple really:
Unroot phone
visit store
Store confirms defective device
Store sets up warranty swap from warehouse
Wait for phone to arrive
Root new phone and setup device
Wipe old phone & send back to vzw.
The worst part of the process was talking to the customer service rep on the phone setting up the swap and her telling me that it sounds like screen bleed and that i should file an insurance claim or will pay 199 for claiming damage as defective device. No way am i paying cuz i keep my phone fom getting damaged...
Over all: very easy

Hello, I was switching from my old Nexus5 to another N5 of the same color and storage capacity, I flashed an entire Nandroid backup to the phone and now its not displaying any Meid or imei, and my service which was activated before the backup is gone. I thought it was a problem with the backup, so I flashed stock using the tool on the android developers website And it still disappeared, but was at least able to recognize sprint service and my phone number, but I couldn't even get a signal.
What did I do wrong? Is there any solution? Because I have work in a few hours and I wanted to Get my phone working before then, thanks.
"Entire nandroid backup" - did you backup/restore the EFS partition too? If so, ouch..
The Nexus 5 has no built in EFS backup partitions. EFS contains things like your MEID or IMEI... your data profiles.. radio settings. The EFS cannot be replaced... it is unique to your phone only...
Never flash another phones EFS to your phone.

So Am i completely SOL? and yes, i did restore everything using the Nexus5 Toolkit.
I've already contacted sprint, they cant do anything, and i contacted google via email and told them but haven't yet received a reply.
What should i do? Start Another RMA? Send them the replacement they sent me back? If they put the MEID and IMEI on it i'm sure someone between google and LG could fix it, they're the ones who put it on it.

You're sol. As you now know you can't restore an efs partition from another phone

Do an RMA, that's your best bet. They'll probably give it a new EFS or give you a new device entirely.

i restored to stock, locked the bootloader, and removed the tampering files so there's no evidence of rooting, i'm just going to tell them it bottomed out when sprint was updating it, and try not to sound like i'm too technical so they just let me send the replacement back instead of my old phone, because everything except the speakers are working on my old phone, and i'll take that over no phone at all. i know it's not the most honest move, but this is the fifth nexus device i've bought, so i think my loyalty and my problem with my OG Nexus makes it at least a little better, not to mention that they could probably fix something like this in 5 minutes with $5 of labor, i'm not about to pay $400 for another device that bottomed out on me.
I'll make sure to let you guys know how everything goes, in case any of you have the same problem.
PS: google's customer service is pretty awesome now, literally as good if not better than apple's from personal experience.
On the face of it this may not seem like much but WTH had it come from? It's causing grief. I can't make a back up. 16 gig phone You are taking about one backup of about 5gigs thx to the "data", plus it's still on the phone so that's over half my space taken! Now you see the issue. I've no laptop to store a backup on. This never used to be an issue. I've a superb cleaner for obsolete files that others leave. I tried saving the data and wiping it and starting the phone. Would not work so put it back.
Is this a crazy amount to have? It seems recent.

Sure mate, its the complete OS and your apps and its data. 4-5 gigs for a complete nandroid backup is pretty normal.
seems to of grown a lot. Music is going to an mp3 then
From my mobile telephony device.
You could get a pendrive and transfer the backups over there via OTG cable...
However, If you want to keep a backup on your phone itself and also want smaller nandrioids... Then transfer your media somewhere else as they can easily be transferred back to your device.. Take a nandrioid backup.. And then transfer all the media back to your device...
You could save a few GBs this way...

Depends how advanced the recovery is I suppose. My full Nandroid backup is 2.4 GB. Set to highest compression setting
I use slimkat which may be slightly smaller than stock though. 161 user apps.

For other phones I've had, when I rooted, everything on the SD card remained intact. For the N5, that's not the case. Lesson learned, no need to yell please.
Luckily I back up all my pictures to Dropbox but I do it periodically. The last time I did it was a month ago.
Is there any way to see those pictures via some Android data recovery method?
You lost them when you unlocked the bootloader, not when you rooted. There's no practical way to get them back.

Is there an impractical way to get them back? It's not a huge deal to lose the last month's worth of pictures, but I figured I would ask.

there are ways to recover data that has been wiped. wiped, but not overwritten. there are ways to do it with the desktop, and there are apps for that as well. search the play store and google.
There are some recovery methods in the nexus 5 data info thread, which you can find via teh sticky roll-up link in my signature.
Google Hangouts to the rescue! I can re-download the pictures I've sent to friends/family over Hangouts. God I love Google
Not getting into the dynamics but the 5 year old was upset at the 6 year and chucked his phone against the wall (prepaid Motorola from BB I picked up for $15 on sale)
I have one game I need to backup data on (hungry shark evolution) the dev have Google play games sync option but has not worked in several revisions.
I am used to root using TB
Any way to backup data without root to reinstall on another phone?
Thank you

Helium in play store works perfectly
Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I do not see the point of raising another when this one almost perfectly answers my question.
I am in a similar situation, albeit hill climb racing
I want to wipe my phone and put a custom rom on it, so I don't have an old and new phone, just 1 phone that will be backed up, wiped, new rom installed, restore backup.
I have a question about Helium. The guides I have seen indicate that you need to pair both the old and new phone prior to starting the backup and restore process. Is this correct? If that is the case, then Helium would not be a solution in my case.
Could you please advise?
Guide I refer to for information:

I also looked at this thread, but it does not go into sufficient detail:
