Flashing w/o the use of a PC

Is it possible with the Epic? My MicroUSB port is broken and I don't know how to flash the phone back to stock (removing root, restoring stock apps) and I've got limited time to do this before I can take the phone back to the Sprint store for replacement. I'm searching feverantly, but everything takes me to flashing using Odin, via USB to PC, etc. I just need to know if I can get a DG27 (that's what I'm still running) update.zip file put onto my SD card and let the phone flash itself via the stock recovery console. Can it be done?

Found this, but it's for the Moment and I'm running an Epic.

I have returned my phones to stock as well when dealing with warranty/insurance, but does it matter if you are having a hardware issue like that? Would they consider it a breach of contract or something?
Of course, if my phone sustained minimal damage and I needed to replace it, there's always totally breaking it...

Unfortunately, it sounds like you're sol... you could remove all the root stuff like superuser.apk, but you'd still have the recovery to deal with

Replacement
You should call your local rep and ask about the terms of exchange. I had a moment and exchanged for the epic and my rep said that software didn't matter. Basically, if it still looks new, they should take it. This is for the 30 day exchange. Are you getting it replaced or exchanging it?

I've tried to make "friends" with the people at the local Sprint stores for issues like this. Since I was about 2 weeks past my 30 exhange window, I got sent from the store that I purchased it from to another store that does more warranty work. Ends up the guy there is someone I had met before at a completely different store back when I had my Moment...nice guy, roots his phones, gave me tons of free paid apps, etc. In the end, apparently Sprint changed their warranty replacement program (again) and he was forced to charge me $35 I won't get the phone till midweek, but I'm justifying the costs in my head by talking with him since he's going to allow me to use some website he's payed onto to be able to download basically any paid app that I want when I return. That means no more Gameloft demos, backup apps, etc...now I get the best of the best.
For those wondering what happened to my phone, I did the Touchstone mod, and while it was working great for a while, apparently too much tension was on the + connection, so it broke right at the joint where the USB connector meets the board...no chance of me fixing that myself. Now my biggest problems are
1) That I'm still rooted, I did a factory wipe on the phone and completely forgot that I deleted a TON of stock apps, including the TW launcher. Once the phone finished it's own wiping, I now have no launcher, so unless someone calls/texts me, I have no phone usage.
2) Since the USB is broken, I don't have a way to charge the phone anymore...and these phones are battery hogs. I've replied on the Touchstone thread to see if I could still use the Touchstone and the battery cover, remove the battery from the phone and charge the battery directly. I know the inherent dangers of over charging, so my only goal is too keep enough of a random charge (maybe a few hours at a time) until the replacement phone arrives.
In the meantime though, I'd still like to see if there is a way to either flash the phone back to stock and/or get a launcher running on the phone again. I have NO launcher now, so hitting the home, menu, etc buttons does absolutely nothing.

I don't use my PC when I flash my phone. I use the "ClockWork Mod" and its "ROM Manager" interface (from the market) and the XDA app from the market. Download the ROM's, kernels, and other tweaks through the xda app and flash them in clockwork mod.

I never installed the Clockwork Mod since it was still having issues with using QuickBoot and not going to recoverry like it was supposed to. I've been in no rush to custom ROM/Kernal this phone, so all I did was root it so I could delete a bunch of the stock apps.
I'm getting a replacement sent to me, should be here mid week. Once 2.2 comes, I'll be waiting for custom things then, but in the meantime, I'm far happier with this phone vs the Moment.

The only reason why I didn't is because it doesn't work 100% with QuickBoot, but I guess in this situation I still could have manually gotten to recovery so I could have put a launcher back onto the phone and it wouldn't be a brick sitting on my desk right now. In an effort to preserve battery life, I only turn it on for about 5 minutes, a couple of times a day, to see what calls and texts I miss and then I return them all via my other phone.
My list of to-do's once I get my next phone:
Root (I just need to decide which version again, seems like there are a bunch and I don't know which is best/safest), not delete any apps until I know what I'm doing w/ this phone vs the Moment
Clockwork Revocery
Wifi tether
Launcher Pro
...and I'll probably leave it at that. Download any rom of your choice place to rom on your sd card. Flash the rom threw CWM.
To put a rom on your sd card since you can't connect your phone to the computer you remove the micro sd card. Your phone should have came with an adapter. Place the adapter with the micro sd card I'm any thing that can read the card if you don't have a card reader on your pc. Place the rom on your sd card install back in your phone the flash

The only problem with that is I've already said more than once that I don't have CWM installed, I've only got the stock recovery. I explained in the post above when I never got around to installing CWM. My phone is only rooted and running one of Noobnl's kernals, deleted a bunch of stock apps (including TW, hence my problem) and nothing more.

If your still rooted, you can try downloading rom manager and using it to download and install clockwork.

Fortunately I was able to get a new phone from Sprint. It cost me $35, which ironically is the same price as the Media Dock I should have just gotten instead of trying to do the Touchstone, which is what broke my phone in the first place.

how do you do that? clockworkmod only updates from .zip, and there of no .zip got dg27. How can I upgrade to dg27 without a pc cuz my pc will not recognize my phone.

I have not tried this, but I downloaded it a while back as a emergancy measure if I ever needed to.
You should be able to download that zip on your epic and flash it in clockwork no problem.

Returning rooted phone, steps to return to stock.

So I am seriously considering returning my phone due to the battery issues. I have rooted my phone and installed CWR & ROM Manager. I did not remove any pre-installed bloat-ware or files. Are there any additional steps I need to take, in addition to un-rooting?

yes, you need to get rid of cwr. search. there is a method posted. and you'll need to get rid of rom manager

use superoneclick to unroot and then do a factory reset through privacy settings. I just unrooted mine cause I get 7-10 hours and thats with 5 hours of data turned off.

It's funny there's at least 8 different threads of at least 10 pages each about battery issues. I don't think I need to expand upon them anymore here! !! I just asked how to restore to stock!!

I dropped my Infuse and something inside the screen cracked but not the actual glass and now the screen doesn't power on. I have a squaretrade warranty so I filled a claim today. Not sure if they have refurbs already or if they'll attempt to replace the screen. I would like to wipe my phone clean before I send it back because I've received iPhones under warranty from them and sometimes the last owners info is still on there like email accounts and data from apps they had that I reinstall. I know iPhone is different but still would like to wipe this thing clean if possible.

You should be able to use gtg's unbrick without any issues. Download it from the dev forum

ive got a similar situation. The display but not the glass is busted and being warrantied. It was running serendipity . Should I take it back to stock before sending it in? And what would be the method of doing this with no help from the display?

YES
Clear it out first. Format the internal SD too, not just restoring stock. Too many data privacy issues these days that it better to be safe than sorry.
Plus, there is a remote chance of Samsung billing AT&T full price if they happen to inspect ur device n find u have a custom ROM since it would void all warranties. There is a thread on Captivate forums where a few users got billed by AT&T a couple months down the line.
1. Connect to computer, and use adb to delete all data from internal SD. Not sure if u can format too, but if u can, great!
2. Use GTG's unlock to restore to stock.
Once u restore to stock, u won't be able to access adb (this is cos u won't be able to go to settings due to broken screen). So try to do this first before restoring stock.

Considering getting Skyrocket Replaced..

First off, I am not unhappy with my Skyrocket in general. To be fair I only purchased it because my Nexus One broke and needed a new phone, but it's been exhibiting some very annoying things that I can't tell are "common" with this phone or if they're specific to my own model. Full disclosure, I have rooted and installed different ROMS on my phone, but many of these issues have existed since before I made all the modifications. I don't know if they're because of a bad battery, bad phone, or a bit of both.
1. Battery life is ATROCIOUS. Yes I know this is not that uncommon, but considering I'm not using LTE (because AT&T thinks Puerto Rico is more important than providing service to an actual STATE that is one of the most prolific in the nation) and I don't have a lot of background processes grabbing data. I mainly use my phone during the week to check facebook and twitter and such, but in about 8 hours I can be down to 20% power. I don't recall my battery life being that bad with my N1.
2. Sometimes I'll turn on my phone and it can't contact the AT&T network. I'll have to reboot, sometimes requiring that I do a battery pull. Speaking of battery pulls..
3. Sometimes when I leave my phone to charge overnight and then disconnect the charger, the 100% message does not come up, nor does the phone turn on. Once again, another battery pull. Also, more often than not the phone isn't actually fully charged.
Anyone else experiencing this? What would you all suggest? Should I go to AT&T and demand a replacement (obviously after I restore back to stock features and possibly run the counter wipe) or just get a new battery (which I think that AT&T should pay for) or just suck it up and deal with it?

Actually talk to at&t they might send a replacement battery for free

Yeah, sounds like a defective battery or device. Might as well go for the new device.
Go back to stock. Reset flash counter. Get real pissy at the store and demand a replacement. Get a replacement phone.

Stupid question: How do i reset the flash counter? I mean I know there's a file out there that does it, but do I go into recovery and just do "install from Zip file?" Also, will doing the return to Stock also remove my CWM recovery?

Just flash the zip in cwm. You'll still have cwm after but your count will be NO.
Then Odin back to stock using the Samsung UCKJ2 tar (not the one in the soft brick thread). For me, sometimes going into download mode using the two button combo trips the counter again, sometimes not. Using a jig to get into dl mode will prevent tripping it (Google how to make your own--its really easy)

i went from the Nexus One as well. As for the general Android experience i really miss my Nexus One, but over all the dual-core cpu, expanded memory and bigger screen is enough of a reason to stick with it. I'm just patiently waiting for CM9 to come out. I'm not a big fan of Manufacturer's bloated UI's.

Fellow nexus users have you installed texasice just to taste aosp ics it's built from evervolv and runs great on the n1..... I kinda miss my track ball too but i do love the screen and speed of the lte network and the processor

Where can I get that? I looked around and it seems to be at SamMobile.com, but it says I need to register to get the file. Is it somewhere else on here? Why shouldn't I use the one from the softbrick thread?

The one in the soft brick thread doesn't flash the modem (not sure about the kernel, but maybe not). I'll post a link in a few when I get back to my desk

Yes, first do the counter reset, then Odin back to stock. After you flash back to stock you can check the flash counter by going into download mod. You don't need to have Odin open on your computer, just have the USB plugged in to your pc, and after pulling the battery and reinserting it, hold down the volume up+down keys as you plug in the USB. You'll get the yellow warning but click up. It should say:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-I727
CUSTOM BINARY: NO
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL
Before you send it back you'll want to go into Settings/About Phone and make sure your baseband is UCKJ2, with the original kernel version (2.6.35.11). Lastly, go into Settings/Security and do a Factory Data Reset (check Format USB Storage to wipe out everything you have on there). Reboot and make sure you get the initial setup screen.

I'll try this all soon and head back to the AT&T store this weekend after I take a double shot of tequila so my inhibitions go down so I won't take any guff (but hopefully won't get me to Mel Gibson levels..)
I have a weird question: If I did a Nandroid/CWM backup and then did the Odin thing, what would happen if I rooted then reinstalled CWM and then did a restore? Would my phone go back to what it was or does it not work that way?

Nandroid backups tend to be a little buggy and you might find weird things happening (or you could brick altogether--not likely but possible).
I'd recommend using Titanium Backup to back up all your apps, and then backing up the Titanium folder, along with any pictures, music, etc. you want to keep to a desktop computer.
You're better off getting off to a fresh start with a new device and not introducing any bugs that may have been leftover on your Nandroid backup (including potential bugs that may be related to the problems you're having).

Also, I lol'd at that article man! I don't use the stock email app so I hadn't run into this.
It is a phone worth bragging about having, but imo any signature block with two trademark symbols in it is going a little overboard.

Out of curiosity do you know how long this is supposed to take? It seems like it's been on <ID:0/003> system.img.ext4 for an uncomfortably long amount of time..

What's wrong with puerto pico? My girlfriend is puerto rican and she's gorgeous. hahaha
Anyway this happened with my T989, swap it!!! Or use warranty with Samsung if you must.

I ended up going against all conventional wisdom and turned off the phone. Now it's giving me the Yellow Triangle but I re-started ODIN and re-ran the process and now it's running at a more acceptable pace. I Don't know if it'll work, but now it's on amss.bin as opposed to being stuck on that section for like 30 minutes.
Of course now it's taking an excessive amount of time on the amss.bin step... I knew I should have started this earlier in the night (and with less drinks in my system..) It also says "MODEM" on the top left white box..

I may have to get one and was just wondering if its a decent phone or not.
Things are tough right now and I don't think we are going to be able to pay our Verizon bill and I may have to just go spend the $40 at walmart to pick this up

I have one and root is possible, but the bootloader is locked because virgin mobile is bein stupid so cwm is out of the question so if u get one and root it be careful. I suggest a different carrier like at&t Go Phone

Just bought this phone a few days ago from amazon. I got it to replace a Kyocera Rise that I unceremoniously managed to boot loop when I went NUTS with checking too many options using the Pimp My ROM app. I nearly had that one for a year, so in a way, not a big loss for me, as I paid around $50 for the Event (incl. one day shipping).
I haven't activated the phone yet, but doing everything else on it seems to be all right. I've tested a couple of 3D games on it already: Temple Run 2, and Raging Thunder. Seems to run both fine, with only a tiny bit of lag on TR2. That can be improved once the phone is rooted. For now, I'm using my older, rooted LG Optimus V as my cell phone. I'll probably load a couple of benchmark apps to see how the phone holds up.
I loaded a full MP4 movie (rip from DVD) onto the Event to test 2D video.
The Event has about 1.2 GB of internal storage available, but the more important issue is the system RAM. It has 360 MB available out of 512 MB. That's only 3 MB more than the Rise... aack! But that can be improved upon once the thing's rooted. Ordered a case + screen protector for the Event earlier this morning... as soon as that arrives, I'll have the phone activated. Then I'll root it. I might skip out on doing any big fixes on this one. The main issue I had with the Rise anyway was with the wifi reception. It seems to be much better with the Event, from my own usage. Also, the cell phone signal bars seem to light up higher with the Event, so I shouldn't have too many problems with phone calls and texts. That usually means better 3G reception as well.
When this phone's rooted, these are the only fixes I'd do to it:
1. Editing the /system/lib/egl/egl.cfg file. Back up the original, name it egl.cfg.bak, then edit the original like this:
0 1 adreno200
# 0 0 libEGL
It looks something like that, but basically, put hashtags on the other lines to uncomment, or delete them. That fix enables the Event to use only the hardware drivers for 2D and 3D full time. Makes a huge difference in phone performance. Edit the permissions first, from r-- to rw- before editing the file. Once it's saved, put the permissions back to r--, then reboot. If you don't do this, the phone may boot loop!
2. Titanium Backup. This can backup all the apps on the phone, including some system apps. TB can be used to freeze unwanted apps as well. Some folks suggest uninstalling the bloatware, but I wouldn't do it, in case the phone gets a system update. Freezing should be fine.
3. Link2SD. This is essential if you want to free up space in internal storage. I use this to link any app that can't be installed to the SD card. It requires a second partition; I used FAT32 (2 GB partition) with the Rise, as it didn't have a custom ROM that had the ext4 modules. This will probably be the same for the Event. When formatting the SD card for this, make sure that the main partition that the phone reads upon booting has the boot and lba flags checked. I use gparted in Linux to partition and format SD cards
4. Greenify. This allows apps to hibernate when the phone is idle. It even hibernates some apps while you're using the phone, saving you some memory and CPU cycles. That can help save some battery power.
For now, I'm using Advanced Task Killer to maintain some free memory and help reduce unwanted CPU cycles. Green Power Premium cuts off the 3G/WiFi when the phone is idle. ATK kills apps, but I set it to work every two hours. That lets the phone do its memory tasks, while ATK kills the more stubborn apps (mostly the bloatware I don't use).

I got this phone for $20 at Walmart's Black Friday sale. For that price who could pass up Android 4.0x? Despite its apparent lower quality, I am quite pleased with its overall performance and the virtual keyboard, surprisingly, works better than a many other phones I have tried.

permission question
Hey all,Ive never messed with changing permissions,I have an Event and Im wonder ing when I open the permission page with root explorer it reads like this
READ WRITE EX
OWN X X
GROUP X
GLOBAL
In the post it says "from r-- to rw- before editing the file" Dopes this mean OWN has 1 X,GROUP has 2 X,and GLOBAL is blank correct? Then edit file and change to how it was in the begining? Thanks alot!!!!

Sorry to rehash and old thread but this one seemed to fit the best to what I am experiencing and what I'd like to ask.
I have owned this phone a little over 3 months now, switching from LG Optimus V, I have some grief from the day one.
First and foremost, it is very unstable. On the average, I have to hard reset it once a day, most of the time, more than just once. And when I say Hard Reset, I mean holding the power button down forever for the phone to reboot as the screen doesn't show anything. A few times, I went as far as removing the battery.
Question 1. I looked around hard and I didn't see any custom ROMs or any custom recovery modules, likes of clockwork. Am I missing something ?
My main concern was the ability of running FoxFi and as expected, it did not run on this one. So, I took the advie of some guys over at the android forums and loaded up poot to root it. It seems to have no problems with rooting. But afterwards, I have tried few hotspot apps and never been able to turn on this fjunctionality. I know the apps I chose required root access and I turned it on before starting the app, but nada...
Question 2. How can I get either FoxFi working on this thing ? Or short of it, how can I make any (suggestions welcome) WiFi hotspot app working with it ?

Yes I own a virgin mobile kyocera event and sucessfully rooted device with no problems at all. The process is much more simplified now than it was when I rooted, so lucky you And your going to want TWRP so you can use the recovery stored on SD if you do come across and bootloop or brick issues. Its worth the $30 I spent It's not the best by far, but its really pretty capable once rooted. Much better than I had expected. I hope I was of help to you, and if u decide to buy it and need help rooting I'm down.
