So I've tried reading through some of the introduction threads, but there's so many jargon terms thrown out casually that I have no idea what half the posts are talking about.
I just "exchanged" my old AT&T Tilt for the AT&T Fuze, and I'm loving it. However, I want to update my ROM to windows mobile 6.5, and get into customizing it a bit. I know the first part is the hardest, because you run the risk of bricking the phone.
Since I have no experience doing this, could someone help walk me through the process?
I know I most likely want a 'cooked' ROM, and I've read the tutorial a few times, I'm just not sure I'm understanding it correctly due to some of the terminology. I'm also not entirely sure what ROM I want yet, and was hoping someone might be able to point me towards one that fits my needs.
Again, sorry if I'm asking when I just just be leaping. Will someone please hold my hand and give me some chocolate milk and talk me through changing the ROM? >.<

Thanx for your reply, it proves you didn't read my post at all.
well if you had clicked his link you would realize that post is exactly what you were asking for.
also. No one can pick out a ROM for you. Browse through them and test a few out. it only takes a few moments to flash a new ROM to your phone.
What terminology are you having trouble with? if you search for it in the wiki or in the post that was linked above then you will undoubtedly find an explanation.
A good site for general overview, if you can handle the writing style, is blown fuze. I gained a lot of info reading this, even though I don't have a Fuze yet (but would like to get one).

take the time to click the link and it will provide you all the instructions needed. Everything is explained in full detail even providing the program you need to flash a new rom, so you should really really click before you complain.
trust me, that link on flashing your first gsm rom is as complete as you get, unless you want big pretty pictures or a video.

Having looked at all the stickies first rom flashing looks easier on this than on my old wizard. I found the sim unlocking, cid and super cid unlocking at first but I read everything twice and it worked okay for me
And if it doesnt then there are plenty of people here who can help

Thank you for actually reading my post, I greatly appreciate it.
To everyone else, I DID click the link, and read it several times before even posting. If you had bothered to read my post, you would have noticed I referenced it several times. I took the time to read before posting, you could at least have the civil decency to do the same.
@ Theoneeye, thank you for the assurance, I tracked down someone who was able to answer some ROM questions for me and help me find a good starting ROM and assist me with the process to make sure I don't brick my phone on my first go at it.
Normally I just try things like this, and if it fails, try again until it works. However, since I read up on this first (even though everyone here seems to think I didn't) I know I run the risk of bricking my phone. Since I've gone through several exchanges already to get this phone for free (long story) I don't wanna be swapping another phone so soon.
To those who still bother to read posts, any input you can provide on your ROM choices, or the other half of my post regarding some things I should look into installing, I would appreciate it.
To anyone else who's going to continue to refer me to that sticky instead of reading, please **** off.
wow. I'm surprised. If you actually read through the link several times and you still did not get it, you were skimming it or you really really do not have a strong grasp on the english language.
Hell, it's even numbered. How much easier would you prefer. If you want suggestions for ROM choices, it is entirely up to you. Every rom has their own unique "style" that they offer and they describe it all in the first post. Energy, NATF, etc all explain their roms in great details and some even provide extra steps.
My blunt suggestion here is that before you tell others to **** off for referring you to where everyone else has use as reference and successfully performed a flash, you should save your rudeness for yourself. Also, if you have any questions on terminology, ask which jargon is throwing you a wrench in your direction following process. That would make it much easier to explain.
P.S: seriously read through that damn sticky, it is as clear as a swarovski crystal. Follow it step by step and don't "do your thing" and you'll have a successful flash.
btw. way to be a jackass to those who have already given you the answers you asked for.
EDIT: TLDR version. Be polite, and follow the directions to the letter. and ROMs are your personal choice since they're all unique and they come in full explanations as to their purpose.

I see your arrogance is getting you far
Just getting into this meself and so far it looks like...
- sort out the hardSPL update first to let you do the ROM and other upgrades...
- once it says 1.90.OliNex on the bootloader fetch the new ROM
- reading around and going by most references the Energy 6.5 ROM seems to be worth a shot, think that's what I'll be installing on my TP
- while you're at it search for aerial upgrades and put a newer version on at the same time to sort out GPS and phone performance.
Just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter, don't run anything else on the PC while updates are being done and check, check and triple check the ROMS to make sure they're correct before doing anything

It's helpful knowing there's some decent people on these forums who are willing to help out. I was able to get the few basic questions I had regarding installation and some pointers to help me find a ROM that fits my needs. Since then I've done a few flashes and all have gone off without a hitch.
To those of you who continue to think I'm being rude, you seem to fail to realize the ignorance and blatant 'ass hattery' in repeatedly referring someone to read something they already read without providing any additional information. It comes across as very condescending, and isn't helpful at all.
Speaking of "It comes across as very condescending, and isn't helpful at all."
If you want help here this is NOT the way to get it.
This is a community of great minds and mutual respect, not somewhere for someone to start making demands and throwing out general negativity.
No one here thinks you continue to be rude, THEY CAN READ IT FOR THEMSELVES.
Everyone here is willing to help, but you need to help yourself first. You're off to a really great start....

Sorry Dracius, i'm with the majority of people here who think you're rude and havent understood the idea of this site - its a community developement site, not a one-stop download & personal tech support center.
The instructions in the flashing guide are exactly what you need to start you off in the world of flashing roms. It has a "before you start" backup part - with a link to free backup software.
It then goes on to explain exactly and in detail how to flash (GSM) hard spl - including a link and instructions to ensure you have a GSM phone. It also tells you to ensure you dont have any other programs running / screen saver etc which might throw a spanner in the works.
Following that, it says - if you want to - how to sim & security unlock the phone, including the required link.
Next it details how to flash a rom, including a very helpful line
1. Download your prefered Rom from the Raphael Rom Develpoment Page and unzip/unrar it to your computer
Click to collapse
Your prefered rom - remember this is a guide on how to flash - not what to flash. To decide that, read the details in the rom forum, read other users feedback - and then when it doesnt help, do what everyone else does and try half a dozen to see what it is you want your phone to be like.
Finally, the guide tells you how to flash a different radio - and again says this is optional. It then links to a radio thread which explains what the radio does and why you might want to flash it.
If you have a problem with any part of the process (or pretty much anything related to your phone) then (after searching & reading) make a post explaining what your problem is - and what you have done to help yourself (say exactly which threads you have read, and why they dont help you / what you dont understand) - people will generally help.
This isnt what you did.

Hello Everyone I'm really needing some help I have a fully stock AT&T 4G INSPIRE and hate the stock rom it freezes alot and etc. Ive flashed my old htc tilt 2 before so I have a lil expiernce on flashing.
Ive looked through the forums for detailed instructions on flashing a inspire and am a lil confused, I just want to find something step by step Its just i dont wanna brick my phone. I believe I need to root the phone 1st??? also my important question is do I need to back up my contracts and all that before I start the process??? THANK YOU
oooh man I foresee this getting bad quickly.
Yes, in short (short because you WILL need to read and educate yourself on your own. No one is gonna hold your hand through this process, this is a development site and not a help me please site) you will need to root first then you can flash a new rom and all that other stuff.
I see your next question is, how do I root. easy answer: Hack Kit which is found in the dev forum. Read the entire OP and effen manual that comes with the hack kit and then re-read it again and again until it makes sense. While you're at it, take a good look at the stickies in the development thread as they give you the step by step you want for pretty much everything. If you're still a little lost or need more information the search function will be able to help you as many of the question you probably will have already have been answered. If at this point you're still confused, re-consider rooting your phone because everyone around here will give you the same advice, if you don't know what you're doing, don't do it.
So basic overview of the process is:
1. Root with ace hack kit.
2. once rooted find a ROM you like (don't ask which is best, if you want to know the answer search the forums for "best rom" and you'll see why I say don't ask.)
3. put rom on sdcard and flash in recovery
It's a fairly straight forward process once you've gained the knowledge. Good luck man!
and I think at this point, mods should consider closing this thread before it turns into a crap storm. I think I got the OP in the right direction.

Thank you!! I was up late last night and found the Hack Kit and reading up on it and it made sense I just didnt know at what point you were supposed todo it, but from what your saying is the 1st step thanks! One last question please will i lose my contacts if I flash my phone?
Yes this will wipe your phone. How are your contacts setup? If they are "Google" contacts then they will resync when you sign back in with the same gmail address on the new ROM. If they are "Phone" contacts I suggest you export the "Phone" contacts to your memory card. Delete all your "Phone" contacts on the phone. Then import your contacts back from the card and choose "Google" contacts. You will never lose them again as long as you keep the same Gmail address.

I know a lot of people put a lot of faith in google... However, here is the 'sure' way.
Contacts ("People") > Menu Button > Import/Export > Export to storage
after you flash, if you have an issue with google's managing your contacts, you can import this vcf file
Ok so I'm looking to root my HTC M7, I've been told the obvious problem already, I dont know enough yet to be rooting. Sorry, still want to try. That being said, I'm looking for some direction. A good site, a good video, anything or recommendations that will help me out. Yes I have gone to You Tube step by step videos but I always seem to run into a problem. For example, the person in the video says to follow a link below in description, I go and the link is no longer there. Or, maybe its there but takes me somewhere different than described. One of them even changed my browser to AVG (I know, I'm retarded).
Does anyone have any ideas on where to go, where to learn and where it will literally be a step by step?
By the way, the unlocking part seems easy enough. I think its from that point I run into trouble. Also, why? Everyone seems to want to know why. Simple, I would really like to learn for one. Second, I hate the garbage att lays in on me. Id like to mess with the speed (I've heard this is possible) and Id like more choices. I just want to keep the phone interesting. The last reason, I saw yesterday. If its not BS, Id like to get function from my HTC logo.
So I hope this is not to silly for all of you. If so, I do apologize.
Thanks, Chris

have you tried this?
http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...one-m7-and-install-recovery-xda-developer-tv/
Yes, it may sound repetitive but read, read and read it again. There is an incredible amount of knowledge contained throughout this site. Sometimes the smallest mistake/oversight can lead to a huge headache, that's why its so important to have a basic understanding of any modifications you are about to make. Start with the dedicated forum for ur service provider/phone. All the info your going to need will be included in the forum and subsequent sub-forums. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions, we've all been in the same spot before. Use the tools that the site provides, search for your answers and read thru the forums.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2222
Thanks.
Thanks for the help. I did end up finding more help in the dedicated area, especially when I went to my phones forums. Huge thanks for the encouragement. I will deff. read a little more before jumping off the cliff. Looks like the process has become much easier and people are developing all in one tools. Cool stuff, thanks again!
I have had a few people get down on me because i feel if someone has a answer, and they put more time and energy into telling you all the reasons why they shouldn't/can't help. It just seems down right mean. I thought these forums were a place of sharing and learning to help one and another. It just seems like it is becoming less of that as time progresses. not everyone here is a "Phone wiz" and that's why they come, seeking knowledge. So what if the question has been answered already? XDA is not a small web site in its infancy anymore. It has a lot of information to surf thru. All I am saying is you know the answer is a simple do this, or see this post would be great, instead of google it, or you need to look harder. Are people that full of themselves that they are to above everyone to help some noob out? Everyone was a noob at some point. My point is lets try to help each other instead of help ourselves only. There is a good saying I once heard, "watch who you step on , on your way to the top, because they won't be there to catch you when you fall". :highfive:
Many people help on this site.... All the time and everywhere. But the ones who find help easy are the ones who also try to to help themselves first. They research, search and do their best to find answers...and then they ask for help when they're stumped.
The ones that have trouble getting help, are the ones who log in...find a thread or make one, reading nothing, searching for nothing and ask for help.
XDA is about learning, and sharing work... It's not a quick stop tech support help desk. If someone can't put in an effort to read, read... And read some more before they decide to start messing with their expensive device... Then this is not the hobby for them.
Most experienced members can spot the difference quickly between the types I've mentioned, and they interact accordingly.
Also, the site has rules... And one particular rule is not followed as often as it should be unfortunately...... That would be rule number 1: Search before posting.
And so... I'm going to close this thread now, because I can guarantee this will not be a constructive discussion. :good:

Darth

I believe a relative attempted to install via oden, A Verizon based module on this phone using odin. I am so unlearned about the android os that I do not know the terminology even to use here. Not complaints but just info, I am now victim to two arsons and thus homeless and rebuilding and so little time this is first chance I have had to post about this in some time.
I am not very adept at finding articles here so would appreciate any help any can provide.
I wish to and will learn all there is to know about Android some time in future and will master most of it except programing.
For now any help with any post or articles or what have you would be appreciated as well as any live help should someone so care to provide
You are welcome to PM or email me as well. [email protected].
If I am allowed to post this, I would consider paid help as well. If not allowed to post any part of this or if in wrong area, please help me correct my actions.
Thank you all in advance.

Hi,
Here is a thread on returning your device to stock with Odin, http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...mware-firmware-kernel-modem-recovery-t2942937
And as far as wanting to learn about Android and the things found on XDA, my only advice is to read read read. There is a lot of info out there, just search on terms or procedures you are curious about and read through the search results.
For your device, you can start with this thread to learn more about it... http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/guide-to-note-4-wip-t2939288
You can ask questions there as well!
Good luck!
Ty, Darth. Sorry for my noobness. I cannot seem to locate in the reccomended thereds, any thing about USCelluar phones or any link to any Rom, Kernal or what ever it is called. I do now know odin was improperly used and possibly a verizon upload was made to the phone and then on panic odin was ran and all possible options tried like flash tlock partition and any other options except pit.
I have not a clue where to start to fix it. I have been reading but if I seen any possible solutions, I missed them. Can someone please point me to some factory iriginal files for the USC NOTE 4 and some knowledge of how to use them? If some other files would work, where verizon or what have you, glad to try that to. The phone in question has never been on line or assigned any phone number since new. Not sure that matters. I do not mind messing it up further or experimenting to learn or help devs if any needed.
Thanks
Gh
I suggest then asking about your device here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/help/noob-friendly-question-t2866810
But I will tell you... Reading and research is a part of this hobby. Without doing a lot of that, people end up with big problems usually.
Here is the main note 4 section, I recommend reading through some of the sticky threads in the general and Q&A sections. Those are the threads at the top with a thumb tack symbol beside them. :good:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4
After you've read up and know a little more, then I'd worry about roms and whatnot. And any further questions can be asked in the first thread I linked in this post.
Good luck again!
I am confident in only big solutions. I thank you for your kindness and patience. I am only sorry that I do not know a rom from a kernal or a brick for now. I regret, I am not smart enough as well to follow the links so well or derive from then when I can. I do have unbreakable tenacity however and never lose a war due to it. The outcome for me is obvious but the time frame not so nice to me as I will not have time to read much for some months and now seek a quuick fix for a quick fix of feeling human again, for now. Any advise for a direct link to some adb and fast boot drivers? Seems this may be the sutipn and not odin for now. Seems I need to get what ever the file is called into the phone or files to recover to as mine goes to recovery every time but then losds the bum files it has stired. Would be nice to know how to idenify the files but all in good time.
You will need to ask in the threads provided. Xda Assist is here to help navigate the site, not for support.
If you have no time to read, and want things done quick, then I suggest to you that your heading down a risky path... And your device could suffer.
Also, XDA is a place to learn and share... Without doing your part here, meaning reading, you will have trouble getting people to help.
Thanks, and thread closed.
