I've bought used Nexus 5 in great condition with discount with only one issue-it can not be connected to PC.
Let me explain more detailed: I connect the device to PC and I see it started charging and that is all. No windows' 'device connected' sound, no Android's 'Chose connection mode' dialog. No new device in device manager.
This is not another 'help to install drivers' thread .
I assume it is hardware issue. I disassembled the phone and checked by multimeter data data paths(I hope I translated this correctly) on pcb where micro usb is installed. They are looks good until they comes to some chip. After it I can't track them.
I also tried to boot the phone in recovery and connect it to PC. Nothing changes, It is still invisible for pc like it is not connected at all.
I have tried that on 4 different PCs, 3 cables, windows and ubuntu
So, could someone plese suggest me what it could be? Can this be used to try to fix the issue?
Did you check in device manager on the PC?

I found the thread about the similar issue with nexus 7 but whole thread gone to 'right click-removedrivers-enjoy'...but I have nothing to rightclicking on:laugh:
I have a very similar issue. It used to work but suddenly stopped recognizing on W8.1. Works for W7 so not too bad for me as i can multiboot.
So, when i plug in my phone this is what i get..
Then i right click and select "Update Driver Software..."
And get this result.....
I right click and click "uninstall".......
Plug the Phone back in and it begins Downloading the drivers.....
Then back to square 1....
Sorry for bad images.

Your issue is driver related and doesn't looks like mine. You just need to install drivers properly. I would be happy if I had this issue in my case:laugh::laugh:
What about windows event logs? Does any new event get created when connecting?

How are you testing with a multi-meter? Are you getting voltage from pins 1 and 4? Sounds like a bad USB port.

I didn't checked windows events log since my experience told me that in any case device manager should show something, like "Unknown device", "Nexus 5", "ADB interface" or something else but it didn't, so that's why I didn't checked logs. I will check just to verify.

I connected USB cable to disassembled module(this is it) and go through data pins on pcb(actually it is not pcb but I do not know what it is).
One multi-meter wite I attached to "data-" terminal(pin 2 here) and another wire I checked pata path on pcb. Then I attached first multi-meter wire to "data+" and checked its path. All looks OK until thse paths meets micro chip with 4 pints. I think 2 in and 2 out. Paths connected to "in" pins and I can not check If signal goes through that chip since multimeter doestn signals. I suppose that this micro chip is damaged or smth like this, but I'm not sure. Another opinion that USB controller is dead, but I'm not sure if it is possible since I think USB controller is integrated into SoC.
nother assumption that data paths are damaged after they go out from micro-chip I wrote above. There are a lot of resistors, capacitors and other stuff there, so something could be potentially broken.
Firstly I thought micro-usb has been desoldered from pcb due to some damage or anything, but it is ok and signal goes through it.
Are you getting voltage from pins 1 and 4?
Yep, sure. My phone amazingly charges from PC and wall charger.
The sad thing is that the phone is not even rooted. So I cant use terminal to check if it see USB controller device...
P.S. sorry for my horrible english, I hope you can understand that I wrote=)
For root you could try an apk like towel root (or others).
Sorry, can't really help you with the detection problem, I have no idea what is going on there.

Is it OK to use it with 4.4.4? I can easily root with cable? but withoutit it is little bit risky for me
There is some discussion about it in the stickies in general. Go to the roll up sticky (by rootSU) and then look at the thread about unlocking rooting etc. Search for towel root and there are several posts about it. If you can't connect to your pc it is really your only option to root the phone.
Anyway I'm going to take it to service center, it will cosn about $30 as they say by phone. I'll let you now what was wrong with the phone.

I was given a Captivate today that has been dropped. The screen is shattered and the screen doesn't turn on. I am wondering if there are any kind of tests I can do without seeing the screen to see if its worth replacing the screen to use. I tried playing with it, the four buttons on the bottom flash when you touch them, it did make the AT&T sound when it first booted up... are there any other things I can try before I through down a good chunk of change on a screen? Also, has anyone had good luck with/recommend a certain place to buy a replacement screen? Thanks!
If the splash screen sound happened and the buttons come on that means i is booted up all the way.
UART. by putting a 619kohm resistor to USB pins 4 and 5, then monitoring the D+ and D- lines with UART, you will be able to watch the boot sequence.
You can even stop the boot sequence by pressing enter, go to the SBL prompt, change an environmental variable to 6543 and then reboot. Upon reboot you will be presented a shell prompt. From the shell prompt you can recover files

Thanks, I had been wondering about something like this.
If the phone had usb debugging enabled, you can try turning it on, waiting a few minutes for it to boot, then access the phone with adb or see if you can take a screenshot of the desktop using ddms. If ddms shows the regular android desktop when you take a screenshot, the phone should be in proper order (unless, of course, other components got damaged in the fall that you can't easily detect without using the phone).
Edit: just a thought, you could also access logcat from adb. Might be useful to watch for a bit while the phone idles to see if any error messages are logged that might hint at malfunctioning hardware.

Why not get a micro HDMI to HDMI cable and connect it to a television?

The only reliable way is UART.
My Nexus S was recently upgraded to 4.0.4 stock a month ago, and has been running perfectly without any problems. However tonight I've noticed that when I plug it in, it doesn't recognise that it's being charged (when the phone is on or off), whether this is on the lock screen, or how it used to display the lightning bolt over the battery. It just keeps telling me to connect my charger.
I have no idea why this has suddenly happened and am wondering if anyone else has had any similar issues, and how I could fix this?
Thanks
Clean the USB port?
Either the USB port has some dirt in it preventing the charger to make proper contact or you have faulty hardware. Doesn't seem anything related to the software since it doesn't recognize the charger when it's off.
stupid question.. have you tried a different charger?
Thanks for the quick replies. So last night I left it on charge and the battery fully charged however it still isn't telling me that it's actually charging unless I go to Settings>Battery to check there.
I tried using a different charger but no luck, and also using a USB cable to my laptop. Also it isn't showing me that I am able to transfer files via USB connection anymore.
I did clean the USB slot using compressed air and still no luck after that.
What I'll try now is a factory reset to see if that remotely helps anything.
Cheers
So I tried resetting the data etc. through the bootloader but still no luck Any ideas?
Thanks again,
Ok so it's gotten worse. When I power down, the phone hangs at the Power Off part, it vibrates to shut down then the phone freezes at that screen.
Ok I fixed it. It turns out that the micro usb tab inside of the phone tends to drop on the Nexus S, so I took a knife to gently lift up the tab and secure a better connection and every single problem has been solved.
Thanks to everyone for your quick responses, it's greatly appreciated.
Good to hear you got it sorted. I'll keep that trick in mind.

by micro usb tab you mean the tiny tab inside the usb port of the Nexus S? Basically the tiny tab that goes inside the usb cable when you connect it?

Hello All,
Happy to say this is my first time posting on this forum, and here's my issue:
A few weeks ago my Motorola Droid Razr was stepped on and the screen was cracked. It worked for a few days after it happened but it finally decided to completely stop working. The actual display is cracked underneath the glass, so I'm pretty sure it is also not responsive to touches either. I have many pictures on it (on the internal memory) that I am hoping to recover, but I haven't been able to figure out how. When I plug it into my laptop (Windows 7 but also have access to Mac with 10.5 Leopard), three devices show up in My Computer: 'CD Drive (G) MotoCast' and two Removable Disks (H and I). When I click on either of the two Removable Disks, I get the message "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (x)" I'm not quite sure what exactly this means for my chances of recovering the data, but if anyone could steer me in the right direction on how I might go about recovering the pictures and such it would be great
Are there any Software from Motorola that you coud download to your PC so you could ask it to sync all your data from your phone? Could be worth checking out their website or even sending them an e-mail!
EDIT: I haven't tried it myself, but I've read on the web that www.moborobo.com might have what you need. Could be with checking this out. Now I am in no way advertising for them, I don't know anything about these developers, I'm only tying to help if there's anything that can be done. Hope this help!

Thanks for your reply, Yes I should sent them an email just to see what they say about it. The only thing I'm worried about is if any software will detect the device as an actual phone; only wondering this because it tells me to insert a disk whenever I try to click on either of them, and it's showing up as disk rather than a device (still doesn't allow me to open them up).
Just had a thought; when I transfer files from my laptop to my cellphone, for like 10-15 seconds after plugging it to my laptop it shows up as a CD, but after waiting a little while it changes to external device and it works as it should... Have you tried waiting a few minutes after plugging your cellphone to see if it changes? Figured it didn't hurt to ask

Have you tried to do it via ADB? If you have enabled usb debugging before, you could try this.

Hey everyone, I have essentially the same problem. My phone is neither rooted nor is debugging mode on, I have a lock on the screen and the screen is completely unusable, cracked on multiple levels. I have not used a bootloader on it yet, because I don't want to void the warranty. I have received my replacement phone through the warranty, but I want to recover the files from my phone's internal memory before I ship it back to the warranty company.
I have not tried a micro HDMI cable because I don't have one, and because the screen is broken on both layers I figured it wouldn't do much good. If anyone insists, though, I'd be willing to give it a try. I'm fairly tech-savvy, so I'm open to any recommendations, no matter how complex. In particular, I'm talking about breaking into the phone through my computer rather than physically taking my phone apart (which I have neither the experience or tools to do). Anything helps, thank you!

Thanks, I went to a Best Buy where they hooked it up to a screen and unfortunately the digitizer is completely out of commission. Do you think it would be possible to just copy the encrypted hard drive? Theoretically, if I opened the replacement to rooting and changed the name of the top folder and copied in that of the encrypted hard drive, it would boot from the encrypted one, allowing me to collect all my files. Is that possible/do you know of any programs that would allow me to do that?

So here's the problem,I've soft bricked my Nexus by messing with the build.prop (like an idiot) and so i thought i could just flash my ROM again and all would be well. Well, i don't have a copy on my internal storage, and for some reason, when i connect my phone to any of my PC's it doesnt do anything. When i say anything, I mean it doesn't look for drivers it doesnt appear in device manager it doesnt come up on explorer, its invisible to my computer and id like to know how to fix it because i dont fancy a 250£ paperweight, all because i didnt like how my proximity sensor worked.

I would say, in last case, try to get (or install a small partition) a PC with linux installed and try with it. You don't need to install any additional drivers and it´s very easy to use android tools (adb and fastboot).

I've tried on three different computers, one windows 7 one windows 8 and one widnows 8.1 all of them dont detect the device. What did you use to edit the build.prop? If you used root explorer or something similar, a backup of the original build.prop was likely made. It's in /system, and will be called build.prop.bak. Use the file manager in TWRP to find it, rename it to build.prop (and add .bak to the original one you edited), reboot and you should be up and running again.
Edit: Make sure you mount /system in TWRP first otherwise you won't see any files.

Yeah wiping the OS was a bad move, especially since you had no way of loading a new one. Sorry I didn't chime in earlier, I'm 99% sure my idea would have at least gotten you running again, save for the USB issues. Good luck with the repair, and enjoy that 4s in the meantime

Weird question, but I royally goofed. I was trying to flash a new ROM to my Nexus 7 2012 and ended up deleting everything besides the bootloader.
To add to this mess, my Nexus 7 cannot be accessed through a PC. The port can charge, but no PC can recognize it. I have gone through every option imaginable, but no PC even acknowledges that a device is connected, even through device manager.
So now I'm stuck looking for a way to upload some sort .img or .zip file to the storage drive of my Nexus 7 when I can't connect to a computer and there's no OS to boot from.
Between the command line, and a possible microUSB adapter, is this a possibility, or is this going to be my new, fancy paper weight?
I've had dabbled a bit with the command prompt, but it seems very bare bones. No wget commands, apt-get, etc.
Still nada. I think I got myself a nice paper weight that says google on the screen!

Sucks to see that you're having no luck so far bud! :/
If it gives you hope, I messed up the same way before with my Nexus 5 and all I could do was go to the bootloader and the PC would also not detect my device. I can't remember what i exactly did to fix this but I know its possible!
I think what I may have done and what you should try is using different usb cables and even a different PC if possible. You may be able to use the bootloader cmds from cmd prompt and see if the device is in the list of attached devices.
Really not sure what else I may have done but I'm pretty sure it detected with different cables on another PC. May be worth looking into to get your device back!
Good luck man. Keep trying, I'm sure you'll get it sooner or later!
