[Q] Droid Razr Screen Cracked and Unusable, Need To Retrieve Information - General Questions and Answers

Hello All,
Happy to say this is my first time posting on this forum, and here's my issue:
A few weeks ago my Motorola Droid Razr was stepped on and the screen was cracked. It worked for a few days after it happened but it finally decided to completely stop working. The actual display is cracked underneath the glass, so I'm pretty sure it is also not responsive to touches either. I have many pictures on it (on the internal memory) that I am hoping to recover, but I haven't been able to figure out how. When I plug it into my laptop (Windows 7 but also have access to Mac with 10.5 Leopard), three devices show up in My Computer: 'CD Drive (G) MotoCast' and two Removable Disks (H and I). When I click on either of the two Removable Disks, I get the message "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (x)" I'm not quite sure what exactly this means for my chances of recovering the data, but if anyone could steer me in the right direction on how I might go about recovering the pictures and such it would be great

Are there any Software from Motorola that you coud download to your PC so you could ask it to sync all your data from your phone? Could be worth checking out their website or even sending them an e-mail!
EDIT: I haven't tried it myself, but I've read on the web that www.moborobo.com might have what you need. Could be with checking this out. Now I am in no way advertising for them, I don't know anything about these developers, I'm only tying to help if there's anything that can be done. Hope this help!

Thanks for your reply, Yes I should sent them an email just to see what they say about it. The only thing I'm worried about is if any software will detect the device as an actual phone; only wondering this because it tells me to insert a disk whenever I try to click on either of them, and it's showing up as disk rather than a device (still doesn't allow me to open them up).

Just had a thought; when I transfer files from my laptop to my cellphone, for like 10-15 seconds after plugging it to my laptop it shows up as a CD, but after waiting a little while it changes to external device and it works as it should... Have you tried waiting a few minutes after plugging your cellphone to see if it changes? Figured it didn't hurt to ask

Have you tried to do it via ADB? If you have enabled usb debugging before, you could try this.

Yes Pupsterface unfortunately I have tried before I've left it plugged in for long periods of time but they all show up at once and all stay there permanently. Thank you though I appreciate it

You know I've read about ADB, how would I get it and use it for this purpose?

I would try using a cord to display your phone onto your television and from there backup the files via the internet. Hope this helps!

Similar Problem
Hey everyone, I have essentially the same problem. My phone is neither rooted nor is debugging mode on, I have a lock on the screen and the screen is completely unusable, cracked on multiple levels. I have not used a bootloader on it yet, because I don't want to void the warranty. I have received my replacement phone through the warranty, but I want to recover the files from my phone's internal memory before I ship it back to the warranty company.
I have not tried a micro HDMI cable because I don't have one, and because the screen is broken on both layers I figured it wouldn't do much good. If anyone insists, though, I'd be willing to give it a try. I'm fairly tech-savvy, so I'm open to any recommendations, no matter how complex. In particular, I'm talking about breaking into the phone through my computer rather than physically taking my phone apart (which I have neither the experience or tools to do). Anything helps, thank you!

Go buy a micro hdmi cable. Having a broken screen shouldn't affect your micro-hdmi port at all.

Thanks, I went to a Best Buy where they hooked it up to a screen and unfortunately the digitizer is completely out of commission. Do you think it would be possible to just copy the encrypted hard drive? Theoretically, if I opened the replacement to rooting and changed the name of the top folder and copied in that of the encrypted hard drive, it would boot from the encrypted one, allowing me to collect all my files. Is that possible/do you know of any programs that would allow me to do that?

The battery is fine. I had one more Tornado device the same happened with it stopped working the same way i replaced its battery but it didn't worked.
Oops - I hope there is no sudden death disease for the Tornado?! The only part that is usually mechanically stressed is the USB socket. If you dare to disassemble the device and you get through until you have the PBA in your hand, then you may check for the soldering around the USB. It is a plain normal mini-USB with only 5 connections, so re-soldering is not that difficult for a skilled person. It is worth a try - as it seems dead anyway.
Take care about the keyboard connector - of all the Tornado patients I had on my table most had their keyboard flex cable ripped - this cannot be repaired and you need a new keyboard PBA.

The USB looks fine, but i'll get it re-soldered from the market tomorrow. I hope it works Thanks for your help tobbie =)
That's strange - if it looks ok there. Maybe the battery connectors then? Usually these are not much stressed - so I have no other idea. Good luck!

@tobbbie
Hey, i checked the other Tornado device i have, i think its got the problem you mention that USB one, if i exchange the usb port of one device onto other will it work?
this one can go itno the bootloader screen too, and if i switch it on the T-mobile screen comes and it keeps restarting.
Re-soldering works if the contacts are gone off the PBA. This could be any of the USB contacts (+,-, data-wires - in total 5 connections + metal frame of USB) with different effects (not charging, not syncing). Restart should not be an effect - do a hard reset on that device (l+r softkey method when switching on). If that does not help, then flash a new OS only. Do not deal with flashing the bootloaders (i.e. a standard flash image) - if you mess anything there (because of USB problems) - the device will be dead.
Taking another USB should not be necessary. This can hardly break and removing it from both PBA may ruin the PBA and the USB socket - so permanently killing both.

hmm that means i need to get the USB repaired and flash a new OS.
i've got soldered a new USB onto the PBA from the market not the problem is that The phone restarts after the first bootscreen. and if i connect it with the pc for flashing the terterm pro doest detects it. And if i try the hard reset the reset screen comes but turns off automatically. Now what to do =(
Seems like you need to bury that device - or keep it for spare parts :-(

It's probably ROM problem, if your phone restarts on T-Mobile screen. Try HardReset from bootloader mode, or reflash your phone

Test to use - no screen?

I was given a Captivate today that has been dropped. The screen is shattered and the screen doesn't turn on. I am wondering if there are any kind of tests I can do without seeing the screen to see if its worth replacing the screen to use. I tried playing with it, the four buttons on the bottom flash when you touch them, it did make the AT&T sound when it first booted up... are there any other things I can try before I through down a good chunk of change on a screen? Also, has anyone had good luck with/recommend a certain place to buy a replacement screen? Thanks!
If the splash screen sound happened and the buttons come on that means i is booted up all the way.
UART. by putting a 619kohm resistor to USB pins 4 and 5, then monitoring the D+ and D- lines with UART, you will be able to watch the boot sequence.
You can even stop the boot sequence by pressing enter, go to the SBL prompt, change an environmental variable to 6543 and then reboot. Upon reboot you will be presented a shell prompt. From the shell prompt you can recover files

Thanks, I had been wondering about something like this.
If the phone had usb debugging enabled, you can try turning it on, waiting a few minutes for it to boot, then access the phone with adb or see if you can take a screenshot of the desktop using ddms. If ddms shows the regular android desktop when you take a screenshot, the phone should be in proper order (unless, of course, other components got damaged in the fall that you can't easily detect without using the phone).
Edit: just a thought, you could also access logcat from adb. Might be useful to watch for a bit while the phone idles to see if any error messages are logged that might hint at malfunctioning hardware.

The only reliable way is UART.

TF700T totally dead, but I'm worried about the exchange [privacy]

So, I was watching a video. Battery was sufficiently charged, so I removed the power cord and the device immediately went black. Completely unresponsive after that and all attempts to resuscitate have failed (power button 3-seconds, power and volume-down for 12-seconds, power-button alone for 30-seconds... all of the things). No charge light, nothing. Its dead.
Here's the thing, I realized that I've got some sensitive data on there. Email. Dropbox. WAN access to my NAS, saved PDF's, incriminating pictures (just kidding). Holy crap... I can access my whole life from this thing. Now, if it was alive, I could wipe it. If I'd lost it I could (hopefully) remotely wipe it. With it dead there's nothing I can do... and if [when] I bring it back to the store for an exchange and somewhere down the line someone is able recover it in a way that I wasn't able to - ouch.
What can I do, other than password resets on everything. Am I being too paranoid? I dont know where these things end up!!

Well, if you don't have password protected screen lock, then there is a risk there. Right now you don't have too much of a choice really, either not send it in or buy a new one. If it's me I would send it in, I believe Asus would have some kind of corp policy to prevent their employee from temper with users' data. To have a piece of mind, you could call Asus tech support and ask them about your situation.

A MRI magnet would ensure it never boots up again again though at the very least and while the MRI wouldn't erase the information like it would on a hard drive it would probably damage the internal storage to some extent.
I'm sending mine back to amazon for a similar death, spoke to then and they have a pretty serious security guarantee for any info on returned devices. They assured they will clear any info.

OK, couple of thoughts. Did you try another cable to charge? Have you tried it on your PC? It sounds hardware related, just giving you some long shots to try. Also, do you have Accident insurance? And how long ago did you buy it, what is the return policy where you purchased it? Best Buy is great about returns, and the Geek squad may be able to assist you too.
I predict a debit card transaction from some Taiwanese restaurant appearing in your bank statement. j/k. Like already mentioned. Try a different cable, check for bent pins that are shorting via power connector. Try to plug into computer to have device come up as media storage. Tab the hell out of back and see if you can jar something back in place. Do you feel a vibration when you try and turn it on? If all else fails return it. Tell them its defective. Usually a store will mark it defective and just return it back to Asus, instead of trying to resell it. Or just send it directly back to Asus and have them repair it. GL
Try letting it sit plugged in for about 15 minutes. Then see if it turns on. Sounds like the battery may have come loose, or the software could have glitched and prevented the battery from charging. (second scenario is easily remedied by turning it off and on again if you can manage to get it back on again of course)
Change your google, email, dropbox, etc passwords and you should be fine.
I used to work in a repair center for another company. Although I can't speak for ASUS specifically, if we got a unit in we would plug it in and restore factory settings before even trying to turn it on. If it didn't power up, we started pulling it apart and replacing components. You can change your passwords just incase, but in that environment everyone has a "get it off the bench ASAP " mind frame so I doubt your information will be compromised.
Hope you feel a little better about it anyway.

>> No, no other cable to try. Doesn't seem likely. Its not short of battery. I was watching video, power was about 50-60%, I unplugged, and the instant the cable was removed, it went dead with no further signs of life after that. Yeah, its hardware related. Bought 3 weeks ago and will return under warranty.

Well Dropbox is easy. Just change the password from computer and it can't be accessed from tablet anymore.
Yet a bit curious that if you are so paranoid why even store some private data on cloud storage which basically is managed by some third party company. I am quite sure that people at dropbox COULD see any data there any time they wanted but I am quite convinced that my home porns don't interest them enough.
I hope..
Probably also if your unit is that much dead they need at least do factory reset before getting back to anywhere. I am assuming your motherboard got dead. You wouldn't be the first one.

No. Your device won't boot, but your data and internal storage will be 100% intact.
There is nothing magnetic in flash memory. In fact, it was originally created to be used in environments with high magnetic interference. Trust me, an MRI magnet will do nothing at all.
But please, continue believing that you will.
LOL, I actually thought that was another microphone hole like the other side (as they look exactly the same). But no, that didn't do anything.

I'm not saying I'm right but MRI magnets are pretty damn strong and they can mess up a lot of stuff that isn't necessarily magnetic itself.

LCD Broken, Need to issue commands to device to access internal memory GN2

Hey guys. SO, I recently dropped my Note II. The screen shattered, but was entirely responsive to touch input and functioned normally (besides shards of glass splintering into my fingers heh) I kept telling myself I would get it fixed "soon" and before I did, it dropped again. This time the screen was not displaying properly and no longer responded to touch except on the notification bar. I pulled the battery and restarted the phone. The screen is no longer lighting up or displaying anything but the phone still boots up as I can hear the startup sounds and flood of incoming text messages.
I previously rooted my phone, left the stock rom on....
Now my intent is to adb into the phone via laptop and usb. and making a "clockwork recovery style image" and then hopefully use an emulator to run the image to extract my data from it. Looking for any guidance or suggestions to get my data back from the device.
If not possible even a backup on the internal drive would be wonderful. Would I be able to make an image of this device and then flash it onto another note 2 to access my saved information?

looks like you broke your digitizer (second time you dropped it), you could just replace the entire lcd and screen instead of a new note, not too hard just be careful you don't break anything in it, that can be big bill thought. did a quick search and on eBay looks around $190 and up... which is redonkulous. i think you could cook your own ROM and get all your data back by doing a adb/system/pull if you wanted a new note 2.

Yes I wanted to replace the broken digitized rather than buy a second note. I was going to use a friends Note II, if I can pull all of the data off. You say adb/system/pull, or do you mean pull the system folder using adb? If you are aware of one would you link me a guide on adb? It's been some while since using the commands. I own a TF 300T wich was bought a year and a half ago. A year ago the display appeared broken and since today I didn't did a further investigation on "what is broken".
I have tried using the search option, didn't find my problem there.
The screen is cracked (or I think), it seems to turn on but I can only see some white light and the crack itself.
The touch screen is in perfect state (or it seems to) but since I can't see anything I don't know how to check if it works, I touch everything and there is no hepatic response.
I tryed to use [email protected] but my device is not recognized but I can acces the internal storage from windows (7), may be usb debugg is not ticked =S
The tablet is not rooted and the bootloader is not unlocked.
All I wan't to know is if the touch is working for only buy the LCD display on ebay, since I can't buy at this moment the touch digitizer (I have to pay 85% of taxes that my country, Argentina, wants to take from me).
I don't know if connectin the mini HDMI to an HDMI capable monitor/tv will help me since I don't own the needed cable (and maybe these is the best way).
Maybe there is a way to cast the tablet screen by some other way.
I just want to know your opinion to avoid throwing money away for something that wont work.
Thanks a lot and kind regards.

You could try a VNC app to view on the computer you srcreen via WiFi, but idk how you will open it and set it up.. The HDMI is a good idea, and the cable is only a few dollars , but I would suggest just replacing the digitizer or buying a new tablet. :crying:

Good luck. There are several guides to dissembling the tf300t around xda and replacing the screen or digitizer.
