[Q] Nexus S not recognising charger? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus S was recently upgraded to 4.0.4 stock a month ago, and has been running perfectly without any problems. However tonight I've noticed that when I plug it in, it doesn't recognise that it's being charged (when the phone is on or off), whether this is on the lock screen, or how it used to display the lightning bolt over the battery. It just keeps telling me to connect my charger.
I have no idea why this has suddenly happened and am wondering if anyone else has had any similar issues, and how I could fix this?
Thanks

Clean the USB port?

Either the USB port has some dirt in it preventing the charger to make proper contact or you have faulty hardware. Doesn't seem anything related to the software since it doesn't recognize the charger when it's off.

stupid question.. have you tried a different charger?

Thanks for the quick replies. So last night I left it on charge and the battery fully charged however it still isn't telling me that it's actually charging unless I go to Settings>Battery to check there.
I tried using a different charger but no luck, and also using a USB cable to my laptop. Also it isn't showing me that I am able to transfer files via USB connection anymore.
I did clean the USB slot using compressed air and still no luck after that.
What I'll try now is a factory reset to see if that remotely helps anything.
Cheers

So I tried resetting the data etc. through the bootloader but still no luck Any ideas?
Thanks again,

Ok so it's gotten worse. When I power down, the phone hangs at the Power Off part, it vibrates to shut down then the phone freezes at that screen.

Ok I fixed it. It turns out that the micro usb tab inside of the phone tends to drop on the Nexus S, so I took a knife to gently lift up the tab and secure a better connection and every single problem has been solved.
Thanks to everyone for your quick responses, it's greatly appreciated.

Good to hear you got it sorted. I'll keep that trick in mind.

I've been trying to find the solution for this very problem for the past couple days.. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Worked perfectly.

Mine is doing the exact thing. Still charges though

Hi, I am having this exact problem, but before I do your trick, I just want to clarify:
by micro usb tab you mean the tiny tab inside the usb port of the Nexus S? Basically the tiny tab that goes inside the usb cable when you connect it?
Thanks!

What shal I doo?
I assume you tried another charger with a different USB cable?

Iv tried 4 different chargers. I can get it to charge I just have to wrap the cord around the phone and its unusable while charging.

Try that, seems to be a common issue with Nexus
NOPE
yeah i got it to start going on and off the entire time but thats annoying. So that doesnt work.
Seems to me that the USB port is faulty, and if you can't fix it with a little bit of push up with a knife, you probably need to send it for repair, or if you have any DIY know-how, open it, and see if you can fix it.
I tried
I tried taking it apart but i couldnt get the back plate off and i dont want to break it because if i take it in and they see if tried to mess with it they may not help me out.

[Q] USB charging port

First, I bought this device the day it came out on ATT. I love it, but I do not know if is a malfunction of my phone or all of them are the same. When I try to connect the USB cable it gives me a really hard time cause is like if something is blocking the port. I have tried with different cables, but all of them give me the same result. I have to push really hard to get it connected and I think is something that should not happen, I want to know if you guys have the same problem or if this is something happening just to me. Thanks. :fingers-crossed:
When inserting your cord tilt it down after you first insert it. Takes a bit getting used too, but it's smoother that way. Mine does that as well.

I'm glad you posted this as I picked my last Wednesday from T-Mobile store. Everything works great on the phone , the only issue is plugging the charging cable in. I tried my other chargers as well but same with all of.them. trick is to tilt downward and it goes in. I don't know if I should exchange for a new one?
Same here. I don't think it's a big deal. Just gotta angle it a bit

It's that way for everyone. Once you've done it a couple times, you'll start doing it without thinking.

Yeah, same here. Though I have noticed that the micro USB connector on the stock cable features a couple of extra "hooks" that my other chargers don't have.
My old charger connector goes into the G3 a lot more effortlessly. However, when using that non-LG charger, the phone buzzes randomly for the first few minutes after being plugged in. Sounds like I'm getting a notification, but there's nothing showing. Bugged me to no end, so now I'm back to the new LG charger. I may try to just swap out the cable and see what happens.

Yeah there's something up with other Micro USB cables.. My car charger causes the phone to do this exact same thing.
Mine does the exact same thing. One thing I did notice is the charger seems to fit better and be more snug, making it less likely for charging issues to occur like the cord coming out. Im still getting used to the way to plug it in, but i like it a lot more. I constantly had the cord being loose or having to be in a certain position on my HTC One X+. Glad to know mine isnt the only one that way. :good:
Any new updates on this? My still needs to be tilted in order to get in. I don't think this will change?

Both of my G3s do this. I had a F400S (Korean model) and it was the same way. Its most likely how it was designed.

Even i had the same problem. First i thought i got a phone with malfunctioned usb port, then i found that i have to use a different angle to push the cable in.
it makes it more secure, you're less likely to break it this way... it's not a bad thing
my new tMobile G3 is doing the same freak'n thing.
the phone itself is [email protected]$$ but the port is def. a manufacturer defect.
I don't know where every one is getting this, "more secure" b.s.
It's not more secure and it may very well snap that small extension in half after some time if we're not careful enough.

I think the idea is to give the port a little more flex. there are a lot of returns on phones is the usb port coming loose, and causing improper charging, i think it was an attempt to fix a problem... and your right only time will tell if its worthy fix or just BS... lol
Glad that I found this dedicated thread
I think the fix is way worse than the problem? Now I have to teach my wife.
thank you sharing your experiences
I got a D851 (G3 T-Mobile model) from ebay. I kept thinking it's the cable I used. I don't have this issue on other devices.
I am so glad you sharing all the info here. I was thinking about exchanging it after trying different cables and all does the same.
Thank you guys sharing your experiences here. :good: :highfive: :victory:

No.1 M2

testing this device :
http://en.001phone.cn/product-no-1-m2-rugged-phone-98.html
MTK6582,1.3GHz,android 4.4.4 (update to lollipop will come), ROM 8GB, RAM 1GB, Screen 4.5" qHD 960*540, declared as IP68, support 3G not lte, street price more o less 100 $.
Some issues with storage : only 1 gb disposable for apps. It can easily be rooted with iroot (success at first attempt). Then you can use link2sd.
For the moment very satisfied by the device,of course evaluating performances you should always consider that this is a rugged phone, at the same price it is possible to buy an octa core with 2 gb of ram not ip 68.
cannot confirm,,,,
Bought the phone...looks nice....very fluid.....for 100 euros looks great....oh well only one GB for apps...fixed it with link2sd.....
yet.....disassembled it .....to give a look....it may be "rugged"...but it is poorly built....component are not properly fixe and one cable just detached from some jumper....still have to re-weld it....
by the way.....anybody would help me with a pic ...to understand where to fix the cable..!?
thanks a lot!
Maybe if you take a picture I can download the picture, mark the spot and send it back to you? Also looks legit for the price tho, ( 93,99$ ) Could be sold for more I guess....
take a look...
here it is, hope is clear.
There is this short red cable....don't know where it was fixed....be careful if u ì're going to open!

Oh well...another issue....the usb plug is longer than usual , in order to make it fit the rugged case........was it that difficult to adapt a standard one..1?!?!?! so you will have to adapt your old usb cables by sharpening the plug......mmmm...it was not such a deal......
Bye...
lollipop
Found on this site the link for a lollipop rom :
http://chinagadgetsreviews.com/download-android-lollipop-5-0-firmware-for-no-1-m2-smartphone.html
still have not tested it, but in the rar file I've found the driver, flashing tool and new firmware, so it looks affordable. I would like to know where the linked site found it in order to find some information before flashing.
Where does that cable belong?
My phone will only boot to logo when charging and says minimal battery, when it was around 70% last time it functioned. I found someone said they flicked the switch that this short cable is attached to and it solved it. Would be very appreciative of a reply, I've only had it two weeks.

It happened the same to me, then I disassembled the phone and realized the short red cable was detached.

CWM?
Hey guys! I also got one of those. Managed to root it easily, but I can't seem to find a CWM recovery that would fit/work. Do you guys have any clue where I could find one?

[Q] black screen after battery replacement

Hi folks,
i am struggling with the following issue and hopefully I find somebody who could help !
After I got a new battery for my nexus, it didn't boot or charge, so I thought the battery is broken. I contacted the seller and he sent me new one. For the time in between I just had my nexus running with my old battery.
So I got the second battery for replacement from the same seller, tried it and nope - didn't boot. I figured this one would be broken again and I tried to put my originally battery back into the phone but it would not run normally now either .
It only booted up a few rare times but the touch didnt work. Since then it only vibrates shortly when I try to turn it on. Afterwards there is nothing more though. Sometimes I can see the backlight bleeding but nothing more...
I changed my screen twice before and I didn't have any problems. So technically speaking I think I knew what I had to do.
Really frustrating. If you could share your ideas with me, that would be fantastic!
Thanks!
I just checked the connection with my computer and that seems to work. I know its not the displays fault so I reckon the USB connector???
Thanks again for your help!
Cheers
Edit: flashed the factory image now and that appeared to work...
I just ordered a New USB connector and see if that'll help.

OK, i think I found what is causing the trouble for me.
I have a loose contact at the connection between the mainboard and the USB connector...
Does someone know if that can be fixed?
Do you think Google will recognise I opened the phone a couple of times?

This is a problem encountered by some others. The connection between the USB/Lcd ribbon and the motherboard has been know to have problems. so first check to make sure it is connected correctly.
I had it happen with one of my Nexus 5 phones. I sloved the problem by using tiny strip of 3M double stickover the top of the USB connector before positioning and screwing on the Motherboard cover . Be careful to ensure that each antannae wire is correctly connected too. You can test everything is working before replacing the rear cover. When you attach the rear cover be aware that it must be able to make a good connection so that NFC is enabled. Just be patient and take your time.
I hope thia helps.
Thanks! That actually helped a lot!
A piece of cardboard on top of the usb ribbon connector actually did it for me!
In fact it's back alive and now I am wondering if I keep my 5' or stick to my new moto x 2014
Thanks again for your help!
cheers

Device turns off while connected to a power source (PLEASE HELP)

Hello!
Out of the blue a couple months back my 7 pro turned off while charging. I have read multiple posts of other people with a similar issue but mine seems to be different.
I also experienced my battery wasnt doing too good after a few years so I decided to change my battery and my usb c port in case that was causing the issue but even with the new port it keeps happening.
What could it be? is there any way to fix it? I just did a factory reset using the system assistant but if there is any other way that cleaner deeper I would. I just dont think my device will be recognized by adb so if anything it would be via wifi.
Please I would love any insight to keep my phone alive a bit longer, other than that its in a pretty good shape with a new working battery!
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
