Just picked one up and... - HTC One M8 for Windows

I love it so far. Thinner and taller than my M7 and I forgot how much I liked WP8 when I had my 828.
DotView case is "ok" but annoying to type with since you have to fold it back. Makes me doubt its durability, but we'll see.

did i make a bad decision?

On Tuesday right before the galaxy nexus ban I ordered one and it will be here tomorrow. I am more than likely going to sell my one x. Although this phone has been very good to me I really love the idea of vanilla android. The only thing I will really miss is the camera app. I'm not a big gamer and I mostly use phone for music and cycling (GPS). This is my first android phone coming from an iPhone and I'm never going back. Do you see any reasons why I would regret this decision?

It's all opinion really, font sell your hox until your happy with another phone. Try out both, but the hox is generally considered better than gnex.

You'll miss the screen on the HOX, possibly big time. You'll also miss maybe a little speed, and if you're in an LTE area you'll miss that. Other than that the Nexus is a great device - and there are many pros vs. the HOX. But you didn't ask about those
I'm the crazy guy that likes sense. I've always flashed phones to AOSP or CM but I just like some of the sense apps too much. The email app and dropbox integration being 2 of the "biggies".
Good luck, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
That's another thing I'm wondering about. Would it.be as easy as taking the sim out of the one x and throwing it in the nexus? I already made one of those sim adapters.
i had the gnex, and well battery on a custom rom with custom kernel for best support i barely made it over 2 hours of on screen time, and the camera in my opinion is horrible...i play golf outside quite a bit and with full brighness it was still hard to see the screen.

Yep. The One X at 50% brightness (275 nits) is brighter than the GN at max (247 nits). There's tons of discussion about the GN's display in their forum. While you're over there, check out the discussions about the camera too. At this stage in its life its only stand out feature is being a pure Google device. It's still a fantastic deal at $349 outright though.

I am not sure if the screen on the HOX is that much better. I am coming from GNex, and I have to say HOX's screen is gorgeous, but I don't think it's a quantum leap from that of the GNex.
The biggest advantage is the S4 (this thing is a beast!) and the LTE speed. The only problem I have with the phone is Sense. I have the CleanROM DE just to get some of the AOSP experience back, and I'll be jumping to CM or AOKP as soon as either one is usable as a daily driver.

they both have their merits and shorcomings. as others have stated it's a matter of personal choice. i have both and will keep both for the foreseeable future. i wanted to sell my GNex after i got the HOX, but couldn't do it. i use the HOX as a daily work phone and the GNex (w/Jelly Bean) when not working.
If the Google nexus had. Better screen an HTC like camera I'd be all over it (can live without lte).
Would love having stock android and tons of developers

One X: the healthy medium between iPhone 5 and SGS3

I recently wrote about the battle between Apple and Samsung, and how their recent products compare to what I think is the superior One XL.
You can check out the blog post here.
Considering the shortfalls of the iPhone 5 and the SGS3, do you think the One X remains the best phone out right now?
And if you do, does it upset you that the other two are getting so much hype? Or is it nice knowing you got the best while everyone else is getting something not as good?
Just wanted to start a discussion on the emotional aspect with our devices. It may sound crazy, but we all know we're all somewhat emotionally attached to our choices.
Good article. I had the Note, switched to the One X, switched the GS3. I'm currently back with the One X. There is just something about this phone.

Yes, I love the screen and i think it's the best screen. I thought the size would be too big but i really like how it's designed.
I still think this is the best phone out of the three. Everyone is saying "iPhone 5! Galaxy SIII!" But in all honesty, people overlook the One X, which is better than both in my opinion. Best screen of the three and looks damn good (though I'll admit, the iPhone 5 is sleek). Running CM10, this is, in my opinion, the best android phone in the US.
Should have went into more detail on what makes it better or else it just sounds like words from a fanboy.
Best phone running stock? For sure
Best phone for customizations? in the current state, nope. Even iOS 6 can already be jailbroken
Screen? In my opinion
Design? The camera sticks out a little too much if you have no case, but other than that, yes.
One XL > iPhone 5 > GS3.
I never was a fan of samsung phones, and I never hated apple products, but I certainly won't fanboy and say one thing is better than the other because it just 'is'
I am loving all the attention android is getting. People are finally starting to take notice of our amazing platform, and I don't care which device is leading the way. We all will gradually benefit

The one x is definitely the underdog phone. HTC is just not marketing the one x like Samsung and apple are.

Hmm, does over clocking an using a custom.Rom on the V, make it grow into the flagship size 4.7, give it LTE,
NFC and make it look like not a disposable phone?
I guess it must out run the dual core LTE phone even if it's clocked at 2ghz..it's the V afterall!
If so Kool, I can throw a 100 out for one now!

GS3 feels like one of those play phones I had as a child, and iPhone 5 doesn't bring any new innovations to the table. This phone has a great sturdy feel like the iPhone but this amazing open source OS. Now if I could install android on an iPhone 5 I would probably buy it immediately. Not sure why that project stopped, it was around during the iPhone 3G.
I totally agree with the OP - I came from the iPhone world, and I expected to feel some regret when the iPhone 5 was announced but...nope. The One X is already better in most ways I care about, with the possible exception of the camera. I've handled the hardware of the S3 and don't like it nearly as much...I've come to be a huge fan of unibody polycarbonate designs, and the screen on the One X is still unmatched. To Samsung's credit, though, you can get the S3 on pretty much every carrier ever, while the One X is more difficult to track down, especially in the US.
I really hope Google taps HTC or Sony for the next Nexus, instead of going to Samsung again. The One X running stock would be damn near perfect, especially if it got a slight spec bump (slightly better camera, maybe more RAM). That said, I'm pretty damn happy running CM10 on my One X right now, and I can easily see it carrying me through until my next upgrade.
I also wouldn't mind a Lumia 920 running Stock Jelly Bean, but I may as well ask for a damn unicorn.

got an iphone 5 on launch day, coming from a HTC one x unlocked running team venom rom 1.23 with black out kernel. i can compare screens because my htc one x screen is cracked (getting it fixed) but they are both awesome! iphone is now long enough but still to narrow (should of been 4.3 inch). I get bored with phones quickly my ios past has been a 3g, 3gs, and iphone 4 before and i left it for android simple fact that IOS still looks the same as it did 5 years ago, seriously apple not revamping the UI blows my mind.
now that i have had break for 2 years its a nice change up but i know in a month i will be bored. that being said the iphone 5 hardware wise is better then the htc i feel, the build quality is same but the thinness and the way it looks the 5 looks in black really gets me. I always liked the one x and when ever i handed people the one x they always looked at the back and seemed impressed, so its no slouch. while my htc one x was as fast in a short browser test, maybe lost 2 mobile pages to the 5 by a one-two finish, but thats with a rom and a 2.1 OC. im sure if we went full website and less mobile websites where IOS has the edge it may have been different. i feel impressed that the iphone 5 can do this, The S4 krait is a hell of a cpu and has nearly 100% clock on the 5 and can still load pages faster, on the flip side a 5 month old HTC can still perform just as good as apple's brand new phone.
I liked my htc alot but i will be parting ways with it but i will not be leaving android, i plan on getting the note 2 next month and will be possibly switching the two phones out.
While I'm waiting for my One X replacement to come I have used my mom's Galaxy S3 and I do like the One X better. I thought that sense was snappier than Touchwiz. Plus while the screen on the Galaxy S3 isn't bad at all, the One X's is better and also has more color warmth.
Also, I had the liberty of using my brothers new iPhone 5. Performance on it is zippy, but even with the increased screen size it still is puny next to the One X. One X just has more features than the 5 and a way better interface. It also didn't feel much different from the 4s that I'm temporarily using.
Such a shame the One X/XL doesn't get a mention at all in the race between iPhone 5 and the GS3.

Black HTC One mini Leaked Images

Hey Everyone!
I couldn't fund any better place than to share it here, please point me out to another section if this isn't the right one. I was reading gadget news when i came across this news about the Leaked Images of the Black HTC One mini. I myself haven't still got my hands onto the HTC One so i thought maybe i should ask in this forum that how has your experience with the HTC One been? Do you like it? How many of you want a smaller HTC One like the HTC One Mini? Thanks for all your help. Looking forward to a constructive discussion.
Update 18/7/13: Just in case you guys missed it, HTC One mini has been officially launched by HTC
The One is a great phone. The only advantage of a smaller one could be better battery life? Not sure what battery is going into the mini?

That looks a better idea to me, having it recessed.
Noticed that it also has the flash on top of the lens, is that a new placement?
My One has the flash to the side of the lens. Might be because mine is the silver model or because it's the UK model?

I just got my One yesterday and I was initially unsure whether I would like the size. After having hands-on time with it I actually really like the size. I'm coming from an original HTC EVO 4G and what I find amazing is that even though the One is larger it feels like it weighs slightly less. The only real dislike I have is the placement of the power button... kind of wish it was on one of the sides as it takes some finger stretching to get to when holding in one hand.
BTW, I should mention that my wife also got an iPhone 5 yesterday as well and the One just totally puts it to shame IMO. Somehow the screen on the iPhone 5 seems smaller than my old HTC EVO 4G and it definitely doesn't "pop" as much to the eye as the One. I was honestly kind of surprised in the disparity. And for the record I own a Mac Mini, iPad, and MacBook Pro so it's not like I'm anti-Apple or anything, but when it comes to phones I think Android, in particular the One, just eat the iPhone for lunch.

Lol what makes you say that? HTC One Mini if it is just a smaller HTC One has the potential to be just as successful. That size market is quite large and I imagine would appeal to a lot of people.
My only concern is if they changed the Mini to a plastic body. Hopefully they keep the metal unibody.

My sister loves the one except she thinks it is too big. Her husband has a one so she has played with it for a while. She was thrilled when I told her a mini was coming out. She is also coming from an iPhone 4s so that could be apart of the size issue.
So the mini has its place but just not for me.

Phone won't be useless, I want to upgrade my old Desire and this is probably what I'm looking for! I like design, I like it being small (although it's not too "mini", better than big brother). Rumoured specs are fine (especially for Desire owner, I won't play demanding 3D games anyway and it has smaller resolution than One to compensate). Hope to see the price soon.

All i can say is WOW...

long time htc user here (eris, rezound, dna, etc) and wow... this phone is by far the best htc much less phone ive ever had in my hand.. with xposed no need to even rom.. (though still love our devs!) lightning fast stock (doesn't even need to be debloated but of course did)
i know this has been stated many times, but i just wanna say it again, this device is beast!

I got the HTC Incredible 2 as my first phone and since I didn't know anything about Android at the time I got it based on reviews not knowing each manufacturer was different. Then I got the DNA because it was the best Verizon phone at the time. (Not a fan of Samsung's cheap feel and hate Touch wiz) Then I got the M8 for close to same reason.
HTC just keeps finding new ways to reel me back in. Loving this phone so much. In my opinion Sense is the best version of Android aside from fully working Cyanogenmod.

Great thread. Glad to see people showing some love for this phone. I've had this since launch day. I looked at the S5 when it launched a couple of weeks later. While the screen looks amazing and there are some improvements to Touchwiz, it doesn't compare to the M8.
First time HTC owner here too. Coming from the Galaxy Nexus which i liked but was getting long in the tooth. Learning curve with the HTC to pick up how to do a lot of things but wow, i really am enjoying the smoothness and functionality of this phone!
this phone is amazing in my eyes i have 2 of em one to test roms and one as personal and its fin awesome way better then the S5 i mean really S5 is what its all cracked up to be all we need now is a lifeproof case for our m8s and we'd be golden
HTC will now be the smartphone I've owned the most. I have had the iPhone and the Galaxy but they both fail in comparison next to HTC's M8. Not only is the phone built like a tank its onboard software has been the most aesthetically pleasing out of all the android phones i have used topping stock android. They have managed to tone down the user interface and created a software that in my opinion should be what google strives to be more like. My only wish is that google and HTC would partner up to make the best smartphone together.

True, but you never know what other defects a refurb will have.
That said, I've never understood why people go for giant cases. The shock absorption and protection of a slim TPU case is all you really need to prevent shattering your screen. I've yet to break one.

That said, I've never understood why people go for giant cases. The shock absorption and protection of a slim TPU case is all you really need to prevent shattering your screen. I've yet to break one. One even had the incipio dual
*knock on wood*

The slim cases do not offer as much protection. I have a few family members that have cracked their screen with various slim cases.

Diehard Otterbox fan here. I don't mind a little extra bulk, fits better in my hand.
I've gone naked on every smartphone I've owned. They have all been in great condition.

I cannot imagine what sort of drops you'd have to perform to break a screen through a typical lipped TPU case. My GS3 withstood *many* drops on concrete (sidewalk, street, basement) while outfitted with a diztronic TPU case while receiving absolutely no damage. The case got a little dinged up though.
Who knows maybe I'm just lucky!

HTC one m8 or Galaxy s5

I'm thinking about switching to the s5 but I love this phone. I get a new phone every so often though outta habit. Would you guys think it'll be a beneficial switch? Or should I stay on the HTC team?
HTC ONE M8?
Two words. Locked bootloader.
It depends what you like, two totally different phones

Confused by the wording but as of now and for the foreseeable future the s5 has a locked and non unlockable boot loader. It does have safe strap, however, which allows it to only install touchwiz roms (kernel restrictions). The m8 on the other hand can flash any ROM any kernel anything it desires because it is unlocked and s off.

I know this is awful late but to be strictly clear with no confusion, you CANNOT flash any kernels, ROMs or scripts (some scripts work but most likely not fully functional due to LOCKED bootloader) on the Samsung Galaxy S5. Now with this 'Safestrap' option you can backup/restore your ROM yeah but any ROM which isn't made and digitally signed by Samsung/your carrier will NOT work. There is currently no way to bypass this and if you want to flash anything your best and only option between the two is the M8.
On the other hand if you don't care about flashing that much then the M8 is still tons snappier and faster than the S5, even beats iPhones in their snappiness where as the S5 loses to the iPhone in speed tests between switching apps. & it's not benchmarks i'm talking about, strictly the speed of when you open apps and navigate through them. Real usage.
Loads more stuff but if you want the good things about the S5 look elsewhere from my post as I've never had one and I myself love the M8.
#M8
Additionally, the m8 wins in every head to head review I've seen. Nearly everyone prefers it.
I've had both Samsung and htc phones, you can't go wrong with either. But after using the m8 I wouldn't even consider switching to the s5. It's way faster in nearly everything it does. Plus you'll get updates much more quickly with htc, which is a huge plus for this phone holding its value in the future.
Why am I... oh well.
M8 wins in everything but camera. 4MP just can't compete. It's good enough for some but it's just not a great camera.
Samsung is like... It's just cheap parts all the way down. A Samsung phone and nearly any other manufacturer's phone (Apple, HTC, Motorola, etc) walk away from the farthest tower in any one direction, and they walk away from all the towers. They're all in active calls. The Samsung will drop first every time. They skimped on the radio like HTC skimped on the camera. What's more important? Your camera? Or your connectivity? Remember, we're talking about your phone here.
Also, the S5 may have a locked bootloader (I didn't know this) but for the M8, all you have is Sense ROMs for the time being. Everything else there's some deal breaker or another. But the phone's only a few months old. I imagine the bugs will all get ironed out by the end of the summer or so.
There's no phone out or on the horizon I'd rather have. I'm curious as to what Motorola and Apple do next, but I do believe I got the best smartphone on the market with my One M8.
Thanks for the replies guys..I think I'm just gonna stick with my M8 ?

Good choice imho.
After all, it is an M8 section. Everyone will be biased just like if you were to ask the same thing in the S5 section.
Each phone has their differences. For example, the S5 has a removable battery, touchwiz, and a few other things I'm sure. But one thing is that it does not feel cheap, I am not sure what started this famous "cheap" talk about phones because nobody ever complained when the first droids were the same materials...
The M8 does have amazing speakers if you value that. The "premium" metal chassis makes the phone very heavy compared to other smartphones like the S5. Sense has also come a long way from froyo days.

Everything feels cheap compared to this phone. It's kind of a ridiculous and negligent point, but metal does feel more premium than plastic. Doesn't mean the internals are cheap, but you can argue that plastic is cheaper than metal.
Anyone who actually purchased an s5 and not this phone who actually use XDA simply didn't do enough research first. No question that this phone is the clear winner, at least on Verizon's and AT&T's network. If I was using t-mobile or sprint, I probably would've been much more torn on what to pick.
Maybe it's bias, maybe it isn't, but I used to be a Samsung fanboy until I tried the m8 out. I loved my S3, great phone for a long time. Can't say I'd ever regret not getting an S5.

Plastic makes the phone very light. If you use a case, your argument becomes invalid. I use a case with all my phones including the M8 so I don't feel ever the aluminum, just the heaviness of it.
If you value kernels and aosp/CM based roms, then M8 is the way to go. If your into stockish experience, then either one is a winner.
Don't get me wrong, I love my M8. But I feel I should shed some unbiased opinion on which phone fits you. The LG G3 is also another great phone you might want to check out.
