HTC one m8 or Galaxy s5 - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I'm thinking about switching to the s5 but I love this phone. I get a new phone every so often though outta habit. Would you guys think it'll be a beneficial switch? Or should I stay on the HTC team?
HTC ONE M8?

Two words. Locked bootloader.

It depends what you like, two totally different phones

Confused by the wording but as of now and for the foreseeable future the s5 has a locked and non unlockable boot loader. It does have safe strap, however, which allows it to only install touchwiz roms (kernel restrictions). The m8 on the other hand can flash any ROM any kernel anything it desires because it is unlocked and s off.
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk

I know this is awful late but to be strictly clear with no confusion, you CANNOT flash any kernels, ROMs or scripts (some scripts work but most likely not fully functional due to LOCKED bootloader) on the Samsung Galaxy S5. Now with this 'Safestrap' option you can backup/restore your ROM yeah but any ROM which isn't made and digitally signed by Samsung/your carrier will NOT work. There is currently no way to bypass this and if you want to flash anything your best and only option between the two is the M8.
On the other hand if you don't care about flashing that much then the M8 is still tons snappier and faster than the S5, even beats iPhones in their snappiness where as the S5 loses to the iPhone in speed tests between switching apps. & it's not benchmarks i'm talking about, strictly the speed of when you open apps and navigate through them. Real usage.
Loads more stuff but if you want the good things about the S5 look elsewhere from my post as I've never had one and I myself love the M8.
#M8

Additionally, the m8 wins in every head to head review I've seen. Nearly everyone prefers it.
I've had both Samsung and htc phones, you can't go wrong with either. But after using the m8 I wouldn't even consider switching to the s5. It's way faster in nearly everything it does. Plus you'll get updates much more quickly with htc, which is a huge plus for this phone holding its value in the future.

Why am I... oh well.
M8 wins in everything but camera. 4MP just can't compete. It's good enough for some but it's just not a great camera.
Samsung is like... It's just cheap parts all the way down. A Samsung phone and nearly any other manufacturer's phone (Apple, HTC, Motorola, etc) walk away from the farthest tower in any one direction, and they walk away from all the towers. They're all in active calls. The Samsung will drop first every time. They skimped on the radio like HTC skimped on the camera. What's more important? Your camera? Or your connectivity? Remember, we're talking about your phone here.
Also, the S5 may have a locked bootloader (I didn't know this) but for the M8, all you have is Sense ROMs for the time being. Everything else there's some deal breaker or another. But the phone's only a few months old. I imagine the bugs will all get ironed out by the end of the summer or so.
There's no phone out or on the horizon I'd rather have. I'm curious as to what Motorola and Apple do next, but I do believe I got the best smartphone on the market with my One M8.

Thanks for the replies guys..I think I'm just gonna stick with my M8 ?

Good choice imho.

After all, it is an M8 section. Everyone will be biased just like if you were to ask the same thing in the S5 section.
Each phone has their differences. For example, the S5 has a removable battery, touchwiz, and a few other things I'm sure. But one thing is that it does not feel cheap, I am not sure what started this famous "cheap" talk about phones because nobody ever complained when the first droids were the same materials...
The M8 does have amazing speakers if you value that. The "premium" metal chassis makes the phone very heavy compared to other smartphones like the S5. Sense has also come a long way from froyo days.

Everything feels cheap compared to this phone. It's kind of a ridiculous and negligent point, but metal does feel more premium than plastic. Doesn't mean the internals are cheap, but you can argue that plastic is cheaper than metal.
Anyone who actually purchased an s5 and not this phone who actually use XDA simply didn't do enough research first. No question that this phone is the clear winner, at least on Verizon's and AT&T's network. If I was using t-mobile or sprint, I probably would've been much more torn on what to pick.
Maybe it's bias, maybe it isn't, but I used to be a Samsung fanboy until I tried the m8 out. I loved my S3, great phone for a long time. Can't say I'd ever regret not getting an S5.

Plastic makes the phone very light. If you use a case, your argument becomes invalid. I use a case with all my phones including the M8 so I don't feel ever the aluminum, just the heaviness of it.
If you value kernels and aosp/CM based roms, then M8 is the way to go. If your into stockish experience, then either one is a winner.
Don't get me wrong, I love my M8. But I feel I should shed some unbiased opinion on which phone fits you. The LG G3 is also another great phone you might want to check out.

Great news! I'm personally going to jump ship to this phone. Why not?? It's getting mad amounts of hype, which is never a bad thing. After hearing someone reviewing it saying it feels like the first 100% android phone they've ever used, I think that says something about it. I'm just scared that this phone is going to be about the same build quality of Yugo, as are all of Samsung's phones
If it has 4G hell yes. I wonder if we can just swap sim cards between 4G phones just fine

be happy with the phone you have, for tomorrow, there will always be something better.
just reminded me of:

No way. After my adventure with the Captivate, I'll never have another Samsung phone.
Nice hardware. Unless it is pure Android with no Samsung software, open, and on anything but AT&T, it might not suck.
However, I'm on the TBolt, now, so no need to change.
There's a lot to like about the Galaxy S and S II phones. I was pretty happy with my Captivate, but hated AT&T's coverage. Sure the stock phones were terribly slow with the pre-installed carrier junk and RFS file system, but the developers took care of that. I believe they've had GB available for a while now since Samsung released it for the Galaxy S phones in Europe. Then you get the absurdly thin and light phones and the beautiful amoled screens.
Any Galaxy S II variants over here will likely be crudded up just as badly as the original Galaxy S phones but that's nothing the developers can't fix. You can always wait for the Galaxy S III as well.
I'm not wiling to pay full retail for any phone much less a Samsung. Seems like a sweet device internally but no thanks. I'm quite happy with the TBolt!

I know a lot of people feel that way. I don't know I actually like what Samsung is doing lately. I'm also one of the few that really like that plastic feel on the phone, makes for a much lighter phone. To tell you the truth I wish I would have kept the droid charge instead of going back to the thunderbolt.
I guess everyone has their own taste.
Leo Laporte mentioned the G2S on This Week in Google podcast. He said it's a pretty sweet phone.
I am now one of the lucky Tbolt owners that now has a perfect phone. Not one issue. Even the battery life is at 16 hours with heavy use and screen at 75% all the time. Nothing will separate me from my Tbolt....unless they make a tbolt with a 4.5-5 inch screen as thin as the G2S. Thickness and weight are the only things I would change.
Crazy to think I'm to a point that a screen smaller than 4.3 is to small.

Anybody gonna return their HOX for a Galaxy s 3?

Looks like preorder for GS3 on June 6.
Anybody jumping ship.?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
I am going to, if I can. The multitasking problems, the locked bootloader/s-on stuff, the 2GB RAM on the GS3 are the main reasons. I looked at some very close-up pictures of the GS3's screen compared to the HOX and Captivate (the two phones I've owned), and I think I can live with pentile at that resolution, although I'd still prefer the HOX screen.
Oh well, there's never one phone that gets everything right. If I end up stuck with the HOX I won't really be upset...it's a great phone. I just think there are enough small factors adding up to convince me to switch if Wal-Mart/ATT will let me. I'll find out tomorrow.
Not in the slightest. As an owner of the HOX and also the Note, the difference between Sammy's Pentile and the HOX is astounding. Take a look at the SGS3 and HOX in direct sunlight before making a decision. Also, angled viewing is bothersome at best.
The only solid leg-up that the SGS3 retains over the HOX(L) is the MicroSD slot. Is it worth jumping ship to get an extra GB of RAM (which I highly doubt anyone will use), a MicroSD slot and a second-rate display? That's a personal question, I suppose. Personally, for me, I would say no.
Also, with regard to S-OFF: Why do you need S-OFF so badly? We can write kernel images without s-off and it appears we may be able to write to the radio block device as well.
I've thought about it, being as I've always had a Sammy. Buy I'm loving this phone and wanna give HTC an honest chance. The phones are near identical internally. Sammy has more ram and possibly a bigger battery depending on the carrier variations, but I'm effin loving this screen. Coming from a gnex this screen easily destroys all. Dev is popping up very quick. Bootloader is unlocked. We have workarounds for s-off and kernel flashes. The only irk I have is the radio blackouts that I gotta airplane mode to fix, which will be fixed. Plus having owned many Sammy I know how awful and slow there software support and version upgrades have been in the past.

+1 to this.
It also astounds me how many people are so wishy-washy and can't make their own decisions about what device to keep. So many threads about "should I buy this phone" or "should I return it" on here and other device forums. It feels like the OP want someone to hold their hand, and make decisions for them. Just do the research, compare the phones in person, and make your own decision. Its not rocket science.
And every device has flaws. I don't care if its made by HTC, Samsung, Apple or whatever. No electronic device is ever perfect. Are you going to get the GS3 and start threads on whether you should return that too? I bet there will be plenty of those types of threads, too.

I know what you mean, but I can understand the other side, too. Many (most?) people don't have the spare cash to buy a phone off-contract, ever. They have to make a decision, soon, and then live with the consequences for two years. Coming from two years with a Captivate, which was a nice device with some nasty flaws, I can relate to the anxiety.
BTW, thanks again for taking the time to write a long and helpful answer to my root/unlocking question!
I'd keep my one X if I didn't have my data drop every few minutes, if my wifi didn't do the same, that's is just unacceptable from anything you buy. Imagine buying a car that would turn off every 5 minutes, and you have to wait for the dealer to say 'Ok, we got a solution, now you can fix it'. I can't wait forever for a software update, and that's HOPING that's the problem. I use my phone for business and it's costing me money.

Hahahahahahahahahahahhahahaha
no.
I like the HOX but I'm probably off this ship. HTC needs to stand up for itself in the American market, but the locked bootloader feels like ATT was throwing its weight around a bit here. Yes, the android dev community finds ways around 99% of things, but I'm still waiting for either an official bootloader unlock from ATT or a new 1.85 root exploit so I can run SuperCID and get in on some of these ROMs that are cookings. Unfortunately for me, I was having huge data drop issues on 1.82 and I went to 1.85 hoping it would be the fixer. It's not bad but...I have a feeling some of the roms (Nocturnal and CleanRom look amazing) fix this issue. While I don't mind using ADB to push things to my phone...and I can follow directions pretty easily, there are just some things I didn't feel confident doing, like using a Hex Editor to spoof my CID that way....so if you're on the Locked, Stock 1.85 ship, it's a pretty awful ship to be on. The HOX is a great phone, but the lack of stock to get a new unit (perhaps it was a hardware defect) to get to rooted, unlocked 1.85 had me going back to an iPhone in an instant. Hopefully either HTC or ATT has an actual solution which makes getting to ROM land even better, because it's a damn shame to see this phone in such a precarious situation.
The SGS3 seems like where I'm headed because on the whole, I've just had much more pleasant experiences with Sammie devices. With a few minute differences (slightly different low-light camera performance, and minutely visibility differences in super-direct sunlight), they're the same phone, one just has a larger battery and expandable storage.
If I was a mod, you guys would be in trouble.

No. The HTC One X is superior. It's faster in almost all benchmarks, I think on the review from engadget it lost in one benchmark to the SIII and it was barely. The screen is, in my opinion, way better. The physical phone itself is way nicer looking and I like the fact that it's constructed from poly.

Some gs2 had the same issue, I know the sprint variation has signal issues requiring a reboot. So Sammy isn't absolved of this either. And I'm on your amside at work my signal is always requiring a airplane mode reboot.. but it'll get fixed. I'll rage until then, but hey it happens.

Trading my HOXL for Nexus

To make this simple, I've always wanted a nexus phone. I came from having an iPhone, where everything was uniform, same hardware, and consistent updates were expected. The only time you didn't get an update the day it came out was if your phone was at it's end of life update cycle. But this is the reason I've always wanted a nexus phone. There's something about having a pure google experience that can't be mucked around by manufacturers.
However I am at a dilemma. When the Galaxy Nexus was first announced I was immediately sold. I wanted that phone. Then the sad news came that AT&T was not getting a subsidized version. I could not afford to drop $500 (At the time, yes I know it has droppped) on a phone, especially one without LTE.
But now I have my HOXL and I do love it, I just wish this amazing hardware could actually be put to good use. Probably my number one issue is the fact that there is no google wallet, which I have been dying for. What's the point of AT&T not allowing it when the reason for it (ISIS) has not even been released? And the other huge problem I have is Android Updates, who knows how quickly this phone will get updated. Most phones don't even have ICS yet, and before someone claims to just use a ROM like AOKP or CM9, I would, gladly, but because the kernel is not released, those ROMS don't work with 100% functionality like I need.
This all being said,
tl;dr
I want a Nexus phone. Probably wont trade for Galaxy Nexus because the hardware is already outdated, but maybe one of the 5 nexus' phones in November. Do you guys think someone will trade after the phone is 6 months old?

Android phones are hard to predict.
6 Months is half a product cycle of an iPhone.
The HTC One X(L) is a fantastic device. We don't even have Kernel Source yet and look at the development we've seen so far. Sit tight.
I think ISIS will be a huge fail and Google Wallet will be allowed eventually.

Probably not only because those phones will be unsubsidized, meaning that they will be dropping the money on those phones, going out of their way to buy one off-contract, rather than simply paying less for a subsidized one. I feel like whoever is going to buy those phones will actually really want them. If they wanted the One X, they would have dropped the money on that (and probably for a cheaper price)
And I agree with you that you never know when you will get an official update for Androids, however I honestly couldn't care less if our phone never gets an official update again, so long as we have the source code.... Once we have that we will ALWAYS be on the cutting edge of the Android platform...(and yes...it will be stable as well...like the previous poster said...our phone is only a month an a half old and we do not have the source yet...once we get that you will see much much much improvement.)
It does concern me that the fact that the SGSIII is now out and uniform amongst all US carriers AND they have the source....I just hope that some good devs still decide to get the One X
And HTC really ought to open their eyes to the fact that they are going to have to release the source eventually, and they are only shooting themselves in the foot by not releasing the source now, now that SGSIII is out WITH source...
People have mentioned all kinds of crazy trades, so anything is possible, I guess. But as mentioned in above responses, I wouldn't bet on a straight out one-for-one trade. Trading what is probably going to be a flagship phone, for a phone that is 5-6 months old is probably not going to be considered a fair trade by most people. You may have to sweeten the deal by throwing in something extra, or extra cash to make it a fair trade. Or sell the One X for whatever you can get for it, then buy the Nexus of your choice.
Yeah it bugs me too that Samsung has a better rep with developers than HTC does. Of course with past phones they had to. Imagine the Captivate with locked bootloader and no source (shudder)
I miss my Galaxy Nexus. I didn't think it'd take so long for us to get the kernel source code and that's holding back development. No CM9 = no care.
This is an awesome phone stock and with the mods and customizations it's a lot better, but I can't even get full contact pictures without a ton of pixelization and that's annoying. Can't undervolt or use any of the fantastic kernels that devs release, because they can't work on this damn phone. HTC are being assholes to their loyal devotees so it's pretty disappointing.
Awesome phone, but no where near the level of homebrew/hobby development because of HTC. I want to love this phone but when I see what the HTC One X guys have with their Tegra 3 chip I get so jelly

Funny, I left my GN to get the HOX because of the terrible radio. Although the software was great, I got really slow data speeds on the GN no matter what radio I flashed. My HOX gets fantastic speeds now.
Whether the radio is good or not is never one of the specs reviewers talk about but without a good radio, the phone is not much use. Do a few searches on Samsung radios and you will see that they have a poor reputation.
And as far as development is concerned, ask SG2 owners how long it took to get CM to work because of the weird blue tooth drivers Samsung used....

Im using jelly bean on my old deactivated nexus, and Im dying to have Google now on the one x. It blows all the voice assistants we currently have out of the water.

I can only dream of this happening. Stock nexus with inferior hardware is smoother than our one x. Sense uses way too much RAM.

Samsung is a bigger company. They have leverage against carriers. HTC is desperate.
Another reason is, samsung is the biggest electronics manufacturing company in the world. This is why the nexus is able to sell at $350. There is no other company that can provide such cost efficiency. Only samsung has the infrastructure.

I don't think we're gonna see anymore developers then what we currently have. They're gonna flock to the sgs3 and the nexus phones. Also, with another better One X supposedly rumored, why would they get this phone? We haven't reached the most roms well get but we've most likely seen which developers will work on them. This phone was doomed one the sgs3 and jelly bean came out. Source or no source.

[Q] Upgrade this month? What to do

I have an upgrade this month on AT&T. Its actually on my granpas phone number because we added him to ours and I could use that upgrade.
What should I do? I almost thought about getting the s3 just to try out and see what its like, but I just hate the look of it and haven't had good service with samsung before.
Also thought about getting iphone 5. I know a good bit about iPhones like jailbreaking and all that good stuff. But I am really an android guy. I could get it for my girlfriend which currently has iphone 4 and sell her iphone 4 possibly.
I would be the one jailbreaking it and all the fun stuff with it lol.
Or should I just wait? Is anything good coming out soon?

HTC One X+ is coming out (One X with a quad core, 2100mAh battery, 64GB storage). That would be a good choice.
Galaxy Note 2 is supposedly coming to AT&T if you like big displays. (Quad core, 2GB of Ram, sd slot)
And then there is a lot of Nexus rumors flying about.
Personally, I would wait and get one of those.
Have you seen the iPhone 5 in person? Its pretty underwhelming. Disappointing, really. It looks almost exactly like the iPhone 4. Just the screen is 1/2 inch longer in portrait orientation, which makes it 16:9 in landscape (for watching HD television programs). It also gives it a goofy long "candy bar" shape compared to most every other smartphone out there. Slightly faster CPU, a bit thinner, and aluminum back (instead of glass). But otherwise its the same old same old. It really brings nothing new to the series. Also, the screen is still so small, it seems like a joke now that I'm accustomed to the One X.
GS3 is not a bad phone, and great dev activity. I might consider it. But we're already a few month along into that phone's cycle. So I wouldn't be surprised if an incremental update is not released on AT&T. Or the Note 2 may be an option for you.
I might consider the One X+, given its an incremental improvement on an already stellar phone. And its coming out on AT&T with 64 GB of storage. But given the bootloader unlock ituation on 2.20, I might wait and see how locked down any future HTC device on AT&T is before a purchase. Or wait for a dev community root/unlock solution before buying.
I haven't seen Iphone 5 in person. I have heard rumors bout the one x. Didn't know it would be worth the upgrade. It would have a lot of the same roms as this wouldn't it? Any info on a date on it?

The One X+ would be worth the upgrade (not the One X which has been out for 4 months now). It should be shipping this month.
And no it will have different ROMs and you will not be able to use the ROMs for the current AT&T version. Different chipset. You will brick your phone.

Man that sucks. The white version is my favorite. Looks better than grey to me.
Looked up some pics of the phone and not a big fan of that red ring on the back camera. Everything else can be covered with a case. But that is just tacky to me lol.
Windows phones are useless. Apple devices make no sense whatsoever. Android is so much easier.
Ever since growing up with Macintosh computers in 80s and 90s and the desire to napalm the original iMac my mother purchased. I find Apple appalling in every way fathomable.
I would atleast wait to see how the Jellybean rom is for the hoxl.

Red is pretty signature for Verizon Droid phones. I'm guessing it will be removed on the AT&T version.
I would wait. There are a lot of phones rumored to come. Like the Samsung s3 but with a smaller screen, HTC one x+, lumia 920(with amazing camera), a new nexus, and the note 2, as well as LG G phone with the new built in LCD screen. A lot of choices.

HTC one vs Samsung Galaxy S4

If you had an upgrade what would you choose.........
My choice would be the one. I like the LCD screen found on the DNA. I have alot of faith in the 4 Ultra pixel camera. I want a phone that doesn't feel like a child's toy. The quadrant scores on the One were amazing, although I'm sure the S4 will come close. What would you choose?
FYI: all phones have ultra pixels, however there 1.1. The ones found on the One are 2.0. Just saying

HTC uses perfect materials, it feels great when you hold it in your hand
Currently on an htc phone and with HTCs inability to update software in a timely fashion that makes me question them all together.
I have a samsung tablet but I am leaning towards the S4 due to samsung overall being the better product and updating things in a timely manner.
It took htc nearly a year to get ics on this and it's horrible for everything.
Go with Samsung. Overall it's just better supported and more highly recognized

The event for the unpacking of the GS4 was ridiculous! Seriously I watched the hole "show" and I was awaiting for the new killer feature that would erase the concurrents.
First of all, the design. Some of you may say "don't change the lineup of a working team" but personally I'm tired of the same designs with Samsung devices lately. It's the same on the GS3, on the note 2 and now on the GS4 ? Show some innovation Samsung!
I love Android, I never had an iPhone and never wanted one, but from the design, iPhone 5 is way better built.
HTC really got that and the amazing device that is the ONE is the proof.
You can't say "yeah I choose my device because it'll have more updates!". Wrong!
Every high marketed device comes with killer features ! 2gb of RAM? That's normal now. 32 or 64 gb of storage / 5 inch screen? Normal too...
The thing is they all look alike in a hardware point of view, that's why nowadays the design is very important.
A good design means a device built with beautiful and premium materials and that the device's design changes from the device that came out before.
Samsung didn't get that. Although the S series of Samsung is gonna sell at uncomputable numbers every one knows that, I don't think it's a major need to upgrade from the s3 to S4 because I just don't see the point except waisting money.
I think it may attract some of those who will walk in a store and see the device (thanks to the amazing job of marketing that Samsung always does) but for those who were waiting it to be a great and revolutionary device, the disappointment is the real feeling.
HTC ONE is the killer smartphone of 2013's beginning, sorry Samsung you'll do better next time. Or not ^^

Me getting S4. Although HTC One has better build quality but for everything else, HTC is not the company I would bet on. It will probably never get updates after one or two.
On the other side Samsung is adding more and more features in each update and from last year when I purchased S3, I already got 3-4 updates. Plus they already working on another one with all these latest features.
On hardware side, I think S4 has upper hand on HTC One. Battery is larger, processor is faster, S4 Screen is bigger but phone is little smaller. S4 Screen is better. Not to mention expendable microSD slot and replaceable battery.
So I would not want a phone with better built quality but strong specs and better features.
I think that's the main reason why I switched from iPhone to S3 in the first place. I know a lots of people might hate me for saying this but iPhone has best build quality among all phones out there.
So definitely Galaxy S4.
I said " I love Android, I never had an iPhone and never wanted one, but from the design, iPhone 5 is way better built."

I'll say again maybe in other words this time, when you grab an iPhone 5 and when you grab a S3, don't tell me that the S3 has a more premium look and feel... And that's not a question of opinion, that's a fact.
I never mentioned the prices of the devices but if you want to, we'll see the price of the S4, when they'll show it at 699$ then you'll tell me the difference with the iPhone. The only device that is worth talking on a price basis is the Nexus 4. The rest of'em are just a scam

Well it's probably true for new buyers. But for a experienced users, it matters.
When I switched S3 from iPhone, I didn't actually know about all this. I had option to choose S3 or HTC One X and I went with S3 because it's more popular and had better support.
From what I learn in last year, I could never buy HTC or Motorola phones.
These companies never support their devices. They even lock bootloaders so we cannot update our devices ourself or install updated custom roms.
I am also a little disappointed with S4 release but I would pick S4 over HTC one any day.

This was exactly like last year for me.
I wanted a phone with huge storage capacity/microSD capacity and long battery life/removable battery with decent specs. And QWERTY but I have given up on the last thing.
The HTC One X was released and as pretty as the White one was, it definitely was not a purchase I was willing to make and I waited for the Samsung Galaxy S3 announcement. The announcement came and Samsung gave me what I wanted. I bought the S3.
Fast forward this year. HTC One announced. Still no microSD slot but looks like decent battery life. Looks very pretty too (I still think the white One X is the best looking HTC phone though). Not bad this time around HTC but let's wait to hear from Samsung. S4 gets announced and again, they have what I want from last year.
If I was choosing again between HTC or Samsung this year: Samsung Galaxy S4 because it has what I want from last year.
Luckily I want more stuff this year which is why I'm not going to buy a S4. My S3 is lovely and I don't need to buy an S4. However, I now really want a bigger screen. This year, I'll be looking to buy a Note 3 or competitor version as long as it has a huge screen, huge capacity/microSD, huge battery.
Honestly, I don't care what company you are or even what your phone looks like (I bought the S3 for god sakes). Just give me what I want and I'd buy it. I'm also eyeing the Blackberry Q10 simply because of the QWERTY but I think my lust for a bigger screen will win out. Plus the stylus is alright...right?
