Doesn't look like I've scratched it. Looks like I've ruined whatever coating that originally came on it. Wondering if it's something that can be fixed. I can still take pictures, but they come out a bit soft.
I looked around online and found this to be a somewhat common issue. I followed the instructions in an article I read to use a drop of water and credit card to remove the film/coating. This worked great for me and my pictures stew now crystal clear

I'll looking into doing that. I just hope the glass underneath that coating isn't as easily scratched. I haven't had this issue with any of my previous HTC devices.

It's a wide known issue that a bunch of people have tried. I myself did it with alcohol a qtip to get the coating off and microfiber cloth to wipe. Takes time but it works.

I actually did this with a qtip and toothpaste. Cleared the foggy pictures right up!
Qtip and toothpaste is what I did and it worked great!
Thanks for the info. I did do a little bit of the lens with a credit card earlier. Did seem to make a good improvement. I'll try the q-tip thing next to finish it.
After you get it clean, get the lens protectors from SlickWraps or make your own.

They distort pictures, if you ever use flash they will make a ghosting effect on the pictures, but it shouldn't affect daytime shots as much as night shots.
I wouldn't use anything, I scratched my coating off a couple months ago and don't have any other scratches yet. I have the phone in my pocket all the time.

If I remember correctly, it isn't a protective coating, it's an anti-reflective coating. Could serve dual purpose but not positive

I put that slickwrap thing on perfectly and never touched the underside during application. They definitely distort photos just as any kind of protector or film would do on any lens. The first one is actually with only the smaller lens covered, but you can clearly see if the light reflects it at the correct angle it'll definitely mess up the picture.

I've been reading a couple threads on this, and apparently that coating is supposed to be a UV coating. Also seems the lens in only plastic.
The lens is glass. The coating scratches. You can just alcohol or toothpaste apparently to remove it. I tried toothpaste and a q-tip myself and managed to clean up the center enough to get me clear photos again.
What makes me mad is I've had this thing in a case almost since day one and the few times I've used a cloth or q-tip to clean the lens.. it seems scratched to hell and back... I only just noticed it.. and I'm beside myself.. My images are fuzzy and seem a strange tint ... almost a yellowish tone when taking a picture of something white.. I've used alcohol.. no go.. am I left with a phone now? LoL.. Sucks this happened because I take very good care of my phones.. my DNA just has 1 scratch on its lens and has never been in a case..

magic eraser or toothpaste with a qtip will work very easily, I kept mine in a case since day 1 also.
Don't sweat too much about it, it's only a film layer. Mine looks brand new and I repaired it about 3 months ago. It's a manufacturing defect, no rhyme or reason for it. My sister doesn't use a case and hers still has no scratches, mine was scratched to hell within 2 months and mine was in a good case.

I hope so.. I'll give it a shot.. I just couldn't figure out how this one got so messed up when my old HTC DNA still has the SINGLE scratch on it that I remember putting there.. And it's never been in a case and my nieces/nephew use it a lot for games and taking pictures..

It's just luck of the draw.
Toothpaste and a magic eraser are both softer than the glass and harder than the film. It'll scratch the film right off and won't damage the glass at all. Just keep working it until it comes off completely.

I used isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip to clean the rest of the film off of the lens. Took about 5 minutes. I don't know what HTC did differently, because my M7 or any of my previous HTC phones haven't had this issue.

I'll try the toothpaste route.. Alcohol hasn't worked.. But I know I haven't scratched this lens at all.. I'm careful, and it being in a case all the time? It's never flush with whatever surface I have it on.. So.. Who knows.. I'll hit HTC up if I can't figure it out...

My phone's screen already has a scratch on it. I took off the 2nd screen protector thinking things would be rainbows and unicorns because GORILLA GLASS, that magical protection against all things sharp and pointy.
Not so apparently. The funniest part? My phone is rarely outside of my pocket, and it's always in its own pocket. There was a single incident in which it was in a pocket with other things, but the sharpest object in there was maybe a pencil. The screen also gives some pretty heavy flex with I push down it.
Hmm, thanks for sharing. I was actually just about to take the protector off for a clean feel sake. Guess now I won't.
Yeah, I hate to have to be "that guy", but I guess the uncertainty about the screen can finally be laid to rest. It's not GG.

So is it reasonable to expect a sea of nails to not scratch the almighty Gorilla Glass, yet have to whip the old "-resistant, not -proof argument" out when extremely light contact with something as comparatively dull as a standard #2 pencil brings it to its knees? I don't wear tight pants either, so don't even bother.
Please, people. Take the wool from over your eyes. I'm seriously starting to doubt if this thing is even glass.

Source? I've had 3 other devices with GG, no scratches on any of them, and they've had long lives that went through the wringer from drops to keys in the same pocket. This thing has 2-3 noticable scratches on it already. I plan to keep the screen protector off since I hate them and the damage to others $20-40 resale (at the time of sale, probably more as of today) has been done, while I can live with them.

When I first got this phone one of the big questions was did it have gorrilla glass or not. Some people said yes and some said no. So I went on Gorrilla Glass's website and sure enough the Triumph is listed as having their product. Apparently some people still choose not to believe but I don't know why Gorrilla Glass would list the Triumph as having their product on their website if it didn't have gorrilla glass. When I first saw a video showing the removal of the second screen protector and how by removing it made it more responsive and took away the bluish tint I was still reluctant in doing so. After getting a scratch on the screen protector I decided to remove it. Best thing I ever did. I've had no problems personally but remember highly scratch resistant not scratch proof.

What I don't buy is all these whiners complaining about their scratched screen but yet NONE of them ever fess up to having done something to have caused it.

Funny, because this is my sixth Triumph. Saying that I got a "lemon" would imply that this is an isolated incident of poor construction. This clearly isn't the case. The Triumph is a shoddy phone.

Sounds like you wouldn't be happy with any phone.
I ordered this protector off Amazon at the same time I ordered my Otterbox Commuter case. Got it yesterday and applied it tonight. This protector is kind that is applied with a soapy water solution, similar to that of a full body skin like InvisibleShield. This protector was $2 on Amazon so I figured why not give it a shot. I have installed IS protectors before so I knew what I was getting myself in to and was up to the challenge.
First and foremost, the seller (Prestige Solutions) processed and shipped my order as fast as could be expected. Order was placed on the 24th, shipped on the 25th, I received it on the 27th. It arrived in a regular envelope and included the protector itself, a cleaning cloth and a squeegee as well as very clear and easy to follow instructions for application. It took all of 5 minutes to do the install, and only took that long because I had a couple problem spots along the edge of the screen that I had to give a little extra attention to in order to make sure it adhered properly. Installation goes something like this: Remove the battery. Get a bowl of water and add a couple drops of dish soap or baby shampoo to it. Clean the screen and then wet your fingers and with your wet fingers, peel the backing off the protector. Wet the back of the protector completely and place it on the screen. I just used my fingers to get the protector wet, making sure to moisten the whole back side and allowing the excess to drip off before setting on the phone. I then got my microfiber towel and while sliding the protector into place, absorbed any excess water that got near the speaker or began to ooze out from under the protector. Once in place I used the squeegee and started "brushing" it over the protector to get as much of the water and bubbles out as possible, dabbing the phone with the microfiber to absorb the excess. Once I got as much of the moisture out as possible, and once the protector felt it was sticking nicely, I used the micofiber one last time to make sure the edges were stuck down firmly and cleaned the protector as well.
The key is using just enough water, it sounds hard and maybe dangerous, but it's very easy and as long as you don't get carried away with the water you should be fine. It will take a few days for the protector to fully cure and the remaining moisture to evaporate so don't fret if you notice some under there the next day. Once it's completely cured and dried you shouldn't even be able to tell it's there, aside from the slight edges you can see around the ear speaker and camera. This protector is cut very precisely and fits like a glove. It's pretty thin and has a rubbery kind of feel to it once wet. Compared to the Gorilla Glass, it doesn't feel quite as slick, but then again I've only had it on for 3hrs now and haven't gotten a real feel for it yet since i'm just letting it cure. Speaking of which, it says you should leave the battery out for 24hrs as a safety precaution to allow any water to dry up, although generally 8hrs is plenty. It also states that it will take 1-2 days for any haziness and bubbles to go away. Having done this before, I assure you that's exactly what happens and once fully cured it looks lovely.
I will post an update in the second post here in a couple days with my review of the look and feel of it.

**Follow up**
Well, the protector is fully cured so here's my take.
The main thing, it did not negatively effect the quality of the display, you cant even tell its there aside from the slight edge around the camera. But other than that its invisible. It is perfectly cut, is very thin and even when u tilt the screen at an angle to catch the reflection you dont see any texture at all, its like nothing is there. Its optically clear and allows the display to shine. The only thing I dont like about it is that it does not shed fingerprints effortlessly like the bare screen does. But I like that it also makes the screen more grippy. The glass was very slick, almost too slick for my liking, its not slick anymore but allows ur fingers to glide across it but without letting them get away from you. I actually enjoy typing much more on it now as my thumbs arent sliding on to neighboring letters anymore, improving my accuracy tremendously. Aside from the fingerprint issue, I love this protector and highly suggest it to anyone looking for one. Its the best $2 you're gonna spend on ur phone!
**Update**
I was able to compare this $2 screen protector to the much more popular and widely available InvisibleShield screen protector, which is virtually the same thing, a wet applied protector. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.....Keep in mind the InvisibleShield protector is about $20 in stores.
My phone, in Otterbox Commuter w/XtremeGuard screen protector
Random phone w/InvisibleShield screen protector
I have two friends at work, both with Samsung Galaxy S phones, one has the SGSII, and both of them have the InvisibleShield protector installed and they look even worse than the one pictured above....it looks like an orange peel on steroids, I kid you not. After seeing my protector, they both want XtremeGuards now! Which would you prefer?
good review! just out of curiosity, why did you get a screen protector for your phone if we have gorilla glass? i am trying to figure out if i want one or not.
also is your screen smooth like glass or is it kind of sticky? i ask because i don't like dragging my finger on the screen and the screen protector kind of makes it tacky. from what i remember, the invisible shield does that.
Gorilla glass still scratches.I know for a fact since I have a 1cm scratch I acquired before ordering the xtreme guard.

No worries. You'll be happy with it, just don't use too much soap and follow the direction to the T. I have no bubbles, no dust, no streaks and best of all, no orange peel!
I just ordered it and hopefully it comes just as quickly as yours did. I didn't get an otterbox though. I got the tpu one just because I like the feeling alittle better. I will try to post result asap.

If you bought it from the same seller, bank on it! They did not mess around, it actually came earlier than expected. Alot of people swear by the TPU cases, I may just get one to see what it's all about.
I personally like them. I had on for my last phone and it did a good job. It isn't an extremely snug fit but it wrapped around the phone just right so it didn't need to be snug.

Just a question, please :
Is this screen protector hard or soft ?
I did use a complete Invisible Skin on my HD, but I removed the screen part, as it made it rubbery, so the stylus was sinking inside the material, and the fingers disn't slip well (it was really rubbery, then )
Plus it rendered like orange skin, just like your second picture, so the readability was decreased.
I was glad with the all the other parts (complete protection) however, as the rubbery aspect was desirable there : it added increased anti-slip effect, plus it's a very good protection - it made the HD almost as bumpy as a rubber ball.
But you have to know that it did't last much more than two years.
The material became yellowish, then became very fragile and tore apart even under slight nail pressure.
Finally, the material unstuck itself, leaving the glue-like part on the phone !
Of course, it's important to know we have a temperate to hot tropical climate here (never cold, then), and most glue or synthetic material don't last very long (for instance, all fabric fall off from car's roofs after a few years, because the glue and/or the foam lining underneath can't stand the temperature for too long).
also, i was wondering, did they give you a tracking number? i ordered if from the same person but i checked on amazon and there is no tracking number or anything. it just says it has been shipped.

Oh ok, just wondering. Somebody asked me to take mine off and make a video of the installation so I was just wondering what you were up to and if you'd be able to handle that. But no worries. I personally don't think a video of how to install it is necessary but sometimes people just need to visual to get them to do it, or not.
Ya I agree with you. The directions are pretty self explanatory for installing any screen protector. Just don't get soapy water all of the place.

just got my protector in the mail.
So today I had something unfortunate happen.
I was running late for work and jammed my keys into the same pocket as my phone. I never do that, ever. I always have my right pocket dedicated solely to my phone. Immediately, I thought "well.. so much for having a flawless phone. I guess it's about time, I've had it for over a month. After all, it is just a phone."
After work I drove to the local mall and bought an Oakley eye glass cleaning kit to use with my phone, something that I've been meaning to do for a while. I really only needed the microfiber cloth, as I don't wear glasses but the kit looked too good to pass up.
After carefully wiping down the screen I began to notice something, the screen is fine! I spent a good 15 minutes checking the phone in various lights, eventually going outside to confirm what I was seeing. There isn't a single hairline scratch anywhere on the screen. :victory:
I've had the phone since launch day and I gotta say, I was shocked. I don't use a screen protector, and just sort of accepted the fact that the screen would scratch, but it never happened. Big shout out to HTC and Corning Gorilla Glass for making a screen that (in my mind) doesn't need a screen protector. I'd take pictures of it but the best camera I have right now is my HOX.
Are you guys getting similar results? Or are you all using screen protectors. For those of you who scratched your phone, how did it happen? Do you normally keep keys/change in the same pocket?

So today I had something unfortunate happen.
I was running late for work and jammed my keys into the same pocket as my phone. I never do that, ever. I always have my right pocket dedicated solely to my phone. Immediately, I thought "well.. so much for having a flawless phone. I guess it's about time, I've had it for over a month. After all, it is just a phone."

I had something similar happen to me today. I have this two pocket canvas pouch that I wear sometimes when I'm working. One pocket is filled with screws, and the other is just for my phone. You already know where this is going. I didn't put the phone in the screw pocket, but I did toss a handfull of wall dogs into my phone pocket, while the phone was still in it. Wall dogs are some seriously nasty screws with massive, razor sharp threads. I realized what I did instantly, and very carefully extracted the screws one by one out of the pocket. Happy to say, there wasn't a scratch on my beloved HOX. I use a Diztronic TPU case and no screen protector. Scary sh*t man.

I've been using a screen protector since I got the phone. I had a Samsung note for a week that had a pretty long scratch on it and don't want the same thing to happen to this phone!
I never do anything risky like this with my phone.. But the lint always seems to get me

Must be the week lol yesterday I took my kids to a water park so I had my phone in the side pocket of my back pack and was sitting on one of those lounge chairs went to take it out and dropped on the cement it was like slow motion I was like noooooooo!!!!! The phone hit face down. But I was amazed I only had one small I mean small scratch near the bottom corner. I've had the phone since may 4th pre order and never had a case or screen protector on it. But that little scare seeing my hox hit that cement did it I went today and had a zag full body put on it.

GG2 is generally tougher than metal screws, so it won't scratch.
Sand is a completely different story and if you let it near the screen you will probably get scratches.
gg2 isnt in this phone

I put the HOXL to the test and decided to scratch it on purpose using a sharp knife, you will be amazed by the results. check out the video review i did.

Incorrect. The HOX definitely has GG2. Aside from the fact that every single article about the HOX on the net says it's GG2, here is a little confirmation from HTC themselves-
This isn't me btw, I just found it in another thread.

I'm not sure. Before I replaced my last one x for bad pixels I was without a screen protector for a bit. With very light use I noticed very fine micro scratches that you could see in direct light. Not deep or anything but they were still noticeable and very annoying.

Put my phone in pocket accidentally with my keys and scratched the screen...not impressed with its durability at all. This is the FIRST phone I have EVER scratched in my life and I have had a ton. Luckily I put on a zagg HD protector after and you can't tell. Pissed me off, but looks fine now. I would be careful going naked with this phone.

Cannot say I've been as fortunate. I have never dropped the phone and mistakenly placed it in the same pocket as my keys 2-3 times and there are MULTIPLE micro scratches that can be seen in the sun and even in normal lighting conditions.
Beautiful screen and phone however but I am quite disappointed.
So had the M8 for about a month wrapped it i a slick skin and has a case on it. Yesterday i noticed the camera lens has a ton of fine scratches.
Has anyone else notice this?
You would think that the camera glass would have been made out of gorilla glass also.
Ugh HTC now i know why i have avoided you.
would post a pick but cannot get the camera to focus on the scratches.
I have mine in a UAG case so the camera is recessed. I'm quite rough with my phone and no scratches on the camera lens so far. One of the reasons I don't like skins. They sit almost flush with the camera so laying it on its back on a concrete surface would most certainly scratch the lens. If you got any sand on it and laid it down might cause scratches too. I see you say you had it in a case as well. Odd that it would get scratched.
Sorry to hear of your issues but I don't think it's really HTC's fault because you managed to get your camera lens scratched. I assume you verified it was perfect when purchased? I have seen scratched camera on almost every brand of phone. Even if it was Gorilla Glass, that does not make it scratch proof, just more scratch resistant. Nothing will protect it from sand.
I'm always extremely careful with my rear camera lens. On all my devices. I don't know why manufacturer manufacturers don't design their phones so that when you set the phone down on its back without a case it doesn't sit right on the lens. But alas, they do. On Samsung devices the lens even bulges out some so your for sure setting it right on the lens when you set it down.
I haven't experienced any scratches on my rear lens, but the front lens is another story. I usually use hand sanitizer and a micro fiber cloth to clean my screen (with a screen protector on of course) have done it since I had the s3 a couple years ago. It does a great job and does no damage. But for some reason on the m8 after a couple weeks of having it the front lens became super foggy. So I couldn't even use the front camera. And no amount of rubbing or lens cleaning kits could solve. This never happened on my s4 or s3. The front lens on the m8 must just be made of a different material.
So yeah be careful with the front lens. The back lens is harder to scratch as long as you use a case and don't put your phone in the same pocket as your keys and coins.
Both back lenses and the front one use some sort of coating on top of the actual glass. Its a very good possibility that what you're seeing is the scratches on the coating and not the actual glass.

Thanks :good:
It is a known issue. Huge thread (http://goo.gl/Ll7b49). I spoke with HTC and they wanted me to send my device or use the HTC Advantage. I chose send it in but then I read the thread in AndroidCentral and used toothpaste with a Q tip and that has fixed my issue.
noticed this on my daughter's m8 today when I went to take a pic for her. Luckily had a moist paper towel in my hand and that was enough to rub off enough of the scratches bear the actual lense. Not sure if I'm gonna even bother to remove the rest now. The difference was instantly night and day.

Exactly! People complaining must be their first HTC device here. This has been an issue for like 4yrs now on HTC devices and since the simple trick is toothpaste and a Q tip. Rub it in, clean it off, simple. Like waxing a car almost. Even my old iPhone 4 has this issue so I'd say it's almost an issue with any phone over time. Obviously this coating HTC used makes the issue happen sooner than later as this phone hasn't been out long.
Common sense though for me if I'm going to take an important picture I first wipe the lens with my shirt to be sure. Or maybe it's the OCD? Haha.
Just get a magic eraser and wet it with windex.. Rub the lens for a minute or so and it's clear!
Glad I found this. The camera is better but not very good for taking pictures if like let's say the moon or lights. Very blurry and glarry. The camera is definitely the biggest and only downfall in my opinion.

No case, no scratches either.
When I put the phone down on an unknown surface, I swipe away any dust first.

Wanted to verify that the original Mr clean magic eraser with water (not windex) worked fantastic. Used it on every lens, even the front one, even though my main lens was the only scratched one. Made all the blurring in my photos go away completely and didn't harm the glass at all.
I'd pick this over using toothpaste, works faster, has no abrasive material, and no chemicals. I put a camera protector on it immediately after cleaning it. Very pleased with the results.
Not the same time of day, but you can notice the edges of the photograph aren't blurry at all in the night photo. I think the flash makes imperfections more obvious anyway. My front facing camera was way worse than that, but now it's crystal clear.

I don't want to be pedantic however a "Magic Eraser" is nothing but an abrasive material. It's melamine foam which when solidified in to the sponge like form because nearly as hard as glass. The micro-structure is so fine that it acts like an incredibly high grit sandpaper. When you rub the camera lens you are simply polishing the scratches away (removing a thin layer of the lens thickness).
The front glass of the phone is harder than the melamine so you won't remove any scratches from that surface (but you may remove any coatings).

Wow, great information. That makes really good sense actually.
Learn something new everyday. That would explain how it works, to me I guess it just felt really soft so I didn't really think of it as an abrasive.
I didn't use it on the front glass, just the camera lens. I don't want to lose any coating on the touch screen.
Awesome.. thanks for this fix! I should have searched for this sooner.....
Toothpaste and QTip worked for me.
So, I finally got around to installing my Whitestone Dome tempered glass screen protector.
Initial thoughts...
-The kit is overwhelming when you first open it. Don't be tempted to try and identify every little piece in it. The packaging design is genius, and waste is at an absolute minimum.
-They scienced the **** out of this. The alignment is perfect. Not askew in the slightest.
-It is NOT full-coverage. I'm admittedly disappointed in this aspect. It covers the responsive part of the display, but it does not go edge-to-edge. This gives it a tangible learning curve in terms of hand and finger placement during use.
-If you follow the instructions to the letter, and don't try and cut corners, it will go smoothly.
-There will be a mess to cleanup. Price of admission.
-You never knew you could see dust so small in size, and the OCD in you will not let you even begin until you clear every last speck.
I hope this might help someone on the fence, or at least entertain mildly.

If it were edge to edge, you wouldn't be able to put it in a case without it lifting and essentially depositing the 60 bucks or whatever that 50 cent piece of tempered glass costs for the Note 9 in the trash.
Yeah. The S9+ Whitestone was more 'edge-to-edge' than the one for the Note 9. I don't mind. The S9+'s WSD was somewhat a pain with some cases so I appreciate the not quite edge-to-edge fit of the Note 9 WSD.

True. I hadn't thought about that aspect since I don't use cases anymore. I've got a skin on the back for the sake of scratches, and this is my first tempered glass screen protector. Yeah, it's definitely less noticeable when it's in a case. They should make an edge to edge and case friendly version.
I had an install issue where it looks like a small plastic cutout was left on the screen edge. Not sure how this happened because my screen was clean and I removed the backing and put it down quickly. I noticed the issue during the glue portion and couldn't get the glue to cover the area =/

Well, I guess nothing will stop the determined mote of dust from spoiling the application. I used this product on three S8s (and have it on order for my Note 9), and I did have an pesky bit of black schmutz under the glass. But it was only noticeable when the background was white (which is, like, almost always). I was sloppy, and not taking my time, and didn't really clean my work area as I should have. But the set up came with two vials of adhesive, and I was able to remove the glass and re-apply. The adhesive is more like cured rubber cement than a sticky glue.

In general, nothing. When you're doing the install and get to this point, I'd suggest taking a second to hit the screen with another pass of the dust tape, then resting the glass protector on the speaker pin as you let it spread towards the center (which then acts as a bit of a dust shield).
I would think if you're lucky and don't push down on the glass, as you're not supposed to, that most dust will push out to the sides as the adhesive spreads. Just a thought.
Does anyone else have any sticky residue coming from the sides when you rub the edges? Quite annoying, granted it might be a bit my fault as I immediately picked up the phone after all the glue adhered to the screen and then it started to slide up and down. I should have just let it sit and used the UV light to cure it in place. But wanting to know if anyone else who did it perfectly is getting glue residue along the edges.

Once the screen has cured you should be able to use alcohol to clear out any glue from the edges. I had a Dome on my Note 8, flawless install, the phone literally slid off my lap about 12 inches onto my car console and there was a crack through the length of the Dome glass. It looks beautiful, works great, but it's as hard as a potato chip. There is no way the phone screen would have cracked from that. These types of cracks happen a lot with the WSD protectors.
It was my first time with the WSD as well.
One issue I had was during lifting the top jig frame after laying the glass and curing it for 15secs. The top part of the frame was tight against the glass. So when I tried to lift the frame out, it lifted the glass as well!!
Then I decided to use my fingers to press down the glass before lifting the frame.
Yes,, I had lots of tiny bubbles on the top left. Luckily, after 2 days, almost all bubbles disappeared. Phew!
As for those afraid of dust, make sure you install in a clean environment with no source of wind. I did it after closing my windows, ceiling fan and also breathed softly. And don't forget to use the stickers to lift up the dust EVEN if you don't see any!
