[GUIDE][root+s-off]$10/month phone with GV, native dialer and sms support - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Hey everyone, this is my first tutorial, and I'm going to show you how I get free calling and texting through Google Voice as well as a data plan for only $10 a month. Yup, that's correct, my phone bill is only $10 a month now. However, to do this, I ended up dropping Verizon and buying a T-Mobile tablet sim, which is data only. They said it wouldn't work, but I am going to show you that it does.

i. Introduction
This all started out since I traveled to Spain for over a month and had to get a prepaid data plan. While I was there, I wanted a data only plan so that I could still get calls and texts from Spain numbers as well as wanted to call and text with my U.S. Google Voice number. After much research, I finally figured out how I can do it. This took a ton of research, but my phone is proof that it works. I hope to be able to help you all achieve what I have from the method below. Thanks for reading!
ii. Disclaimer
Like any other tutorial, by following these directions, you claim sole responsibility for whatever happens to your device. If for whatever reason your device doesn't work, I will not be held responsible for your, or anyone else's actions. This tutorial is my gift to the community and may not be subject to work in all cases.
iii. Limitations
By using this method, there are some limitations.
The first limitation is when switching from network to wifi and vice versa. If you are in a call while using the mobile network and your wifi connects, your phone call will be lost.
Since you will be using multiple services to make it all work, there will be some lag with the voice
Adding to above, since you will be using VoIP, calls may appear to "stutter" based on how good of signal you have in the area. (It doesn't stuter the majority of the time)
With google voice changing throughout this year, this method may not work in the coming months
iv. Prerequisites
root and s-off for custom roms
Any custom rom, my preference is ViperOneM8 1.8.0 (2.1.0 didn't work correctly with it). Main thread here. Download 1.7.1 full and 1.8.0 OTA since there isn't a 1.8.0 full
The 0.89.20.0321 radios. The reason for this is the network wouldn't switch cell towers correctly. Radios available here. Support thread here.
xposed XVoicePlus 2.4.2 available here. This handles sms+mms (provided GV supports the MMS). Main thread here.
You are also going to need a tablet data plan. Below are some options I have researched:
T-Mobile prepaid data. You can buy a sim card online, or in store. $10/1gb*, $20/3gb** Allows roaming to Canada and I think domestic roaming. At least, I was able to use Rogers HSPA+ in Canada
Redpocket (Tmobile 4g, AT&T 3g, Sprint 4g, Verizon 3g) $10/1gb, ***$30/3gb available online. I don't believe they allow roaming.
StraightTalk (Tmobile, AT&T, and possibly Verizon) $15/1gb, $25/2gb. I put this last in the list since there are lots of complaints of customer service and the network not working properly.
*This promotion goes until 2015. Once the promotion is over, it's $20/1gb and $30/3gb
**$20 plan is unlimited in the sense that you get bumped down to 2g speeds after you hit your limit. The 1gb plan doesn't offer "unlimited"
***Only this plan allows "unlimited" where you get throttled after your limit.
v. SIM Card and Phone Setup
The first step is to flash the .0321 firmware which is the one that will properly hand-off between 2g/3g/4g connections. Otherwise it will get stuck on 4g and when you switch towers it won't reconnect unless you toggle airplane mode.
Insert your SIM Card
Install ViperOne and in the aroma settings, select your preferences, then choose Tmobile as your carrier (If you chose an mvno on a different networt, select the option accordingly).
Update ViperOne immediately to 1.8.0. It will automatically restart the installer, so hold power+VolUp for 15 seconds, then power+VolDown to boot into bootloader, then recovery.
If you are on wifi or have data, sign into your google account, otherwise skip it.
Go to settings, and click mobile data. You may have to wait until the sim card is detected until you see that setting. If it show up, go to the alternative settings below, then when done go to the next step.
Click network operators and select search automatically, or search for your own if it doesn't register.
Click access point names and select T-Mobile US LTE. If that isn't there, click options, and reset to default. If it still doesn't work, keep resetting to default until it appears. Otherwise, create your own with APN="fast.t-mobile.com" and APN type="default, supl, admin, hipri" and name it whatever you want and save.
For network mode, choose "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto"
Restart your phone again and you should be connected to the 4g network provided you are in an area that receives it.
Alternative Settings (If above doesn't work)
Go to settings, click venom tweaks, go to misc, click phone info.
For preferred network type, choose "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto"
Open the menu, select radio band, USA Band (If this option isn't listed or says unsuccessful, let me know.)
Restart your phone and go back up to the directions and finish the rest.
vi. Calling Setup
Login to google voice, click the settings icon in the top right corner, and check google chat for you forwarded calls.
Download SIPdroid from the market (free). We will not be using this application as your dialer, you can use any dialer you want after the tutorial is over.
In SIPdroid click New PBX linked to my Google Voice which should be at the bottom when you install it. If it isn't, then clear the data in app settings and try it again.
Verify the username and email is correct (they should be the same as the google voice account you are using) and make your password the same as your google voice account. The password needs to be the same so that the service can login to your gv account for calls. Now you can uninstall SIPdroid
On your phone, or computer, go to http://pbxes.org and login with your username and password (which is the same as your gv account).
This next part is very important. Click personal and fill in personal data. I was told you are required to enter this information, otherwise your account will be deleted after 30 days. For server, select the timezone with the www3(Nernburg) server. Originally when I used this method, I was having problems connecting, this seems to be the only server that works for this method. Don't forget to save
After saving, click extensions on the left. After it loads, you'll notice under extensions it says sipdroid <200>. Click on that and it will bring up a list of settings. You'll notice that your username is your gv account + "-200" (ex. gvaccount-200).
Get back on your phone and open the dialer (I'm using the htc dialer that came with the one for this tutorial), and open settings.
Under internet call settings, click accounts, then add account
Code:
Username: gvAccountName-200 (don't put @gmail.com or anything after)
Password: gvAccountPassword
Server: pbxes.org
check "Set as primary account"
Click Optional settings and change transport type to TCP, then options > save. Don't click the back button because it may not save it
You'll notice that now your SIP Accounts will show "[email protected]" and it should register and say receiving calls.
Click back and under internet call settings, click use internet calling for all calls.
Congratulations, incoming and outgoing calls now work provided you have a data connection.
vii. SMS/MMS Setup for Native Messaging
Install Xposed framework and XVoicePlus 2.4.2, activate XVoicePlus, then reboot
Install google voice from the market and sign in.
In the gv app, click sync and notifications, uncheck text notifications, and receive text messages from gv app (So you don't get duplicate notifications)
Open XVoicePlus and enable it. Select your GV account, and keep polling frequency to whatever you want. I keep mine on never since they are push notifications from the GV app.
Congratulations now you can send and receive SMS from any messaging app as well as MMS provided GV supports it, which currently, doesn't handle it well. Hide google voice from your app drawer and you are set.
To disable gv sending/receiving whenever needed, uncheck the option in the XVoicePlus app.

Any review of the voice quality?
Any idea what the data rate is?

Voice quality is better than phone. 10Kb/s up and down. The quality will be better or worse based on the connection

GSM Data & Phone Settings - Overseas

I am visiting Australia for 3 months this summer and was hoping to use my TP2 with a Virgin Mobile Australia SIM card for voice and data. From searching the forum it looks as if I am going to need some setting for data access, and possible to disable CMGuardian.
When I have used my UK Orange or Italian TIM SIM in my Motorola Razr under Tools I see some SIM specific menu items for checking credit, recharging etc. Will I see the same things in the TP2 once it make a connection?
I would appreciate any suggestions for anybody who has used a GSM SIM for data access.
Thanks
No you need to contact the provider and find out the settings for data
GSM Overseas settings
Now in Australia, I have had to adjust several settings and I want to pass on what I learned. After inserting the Virgin Mobile SIM, don't forget to switch to GSM only. There are some CDMA services in Australia and you don't want to roam onto them or you will be paying the Sprint Roaming rates. The Virgin SIM did not show up as an icon under settings and tools the way that other SIM cards have.
I found my phone worked as a phone, GPS worked and it would go on the internet thru Opera. However, at first it would not access my email and required me to dial local calls in Australia as if they were long distance.
I found I needed to change the Global Smart Dialing settings which can be found under Phone, Menu, Global Smart Dialing (need to scroll down to see this option on the Menu). Change the "dialing from" to the correct number required before country code. So for Australia, where you dial 00 before the country code when dialing out internationally, selecting Australia will change the 011 (used when dialing from the USA) to 00.
Next I needed to change the dialing rules. Go to Start, Settings, Menu, All Settings, Connections, Connections, Advanced Tab, Dialing Rules. I ticked the box for "use dialing rules", and edited the rules for Mobile, Work and Home to use the Australia country code of 61 and blanked the area code. I think I could have got the same result by editing the dialing pattern for local calls to remove the E and the F so that local calls did not have the country code or area code prefixed to them.
To fix the Email issue, I had to go to my email accounts by going to the Inbox, Menu, Tools, Options and tapping on each email setup in turn. Once in an email setup, select "Edit Account Settings" and tap Next 4 times to get to Advanced Server Settings. Here there is a drop down list of Network connections. I had to change mine from "The Internet" to VirginGPRS.
NOTE: Have not had a chance to try this, but probably the easier way to fix the email issue is to go to Start, Settings, Connections, Connections, Advanced tab and under Programs that automatically......should connect using "VirginGPRS" or whatever service you are using.
At this point I have phone calls, local SMS, internet and email working. I still have a problem with international SMS.
I am sure somebody understands this better than me and perhaps their is a more elegant way of doing this, but at least it worked.

How do you activate wi-fi calling?

Does anyone know how to activate wi-fi calling on the Z5? I figured it'd be a menu setting, but I can't find it. I'm using the Taiwan version of the Compact and am using MetroPCS here in the States.
Thanks.
To answer my own question. It appears that wi-fi calling is only available with some carrier phones. So for instance, EE in England says on their setup page,
"WiFi Calling is only available on the EE version of the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact, bought directly from us in one of our stores, online at EE.co.uk, through our telesales team, or through corporate sales if you are a corporate customer."
So, I guess my question now is, is there a way to flash the phone so that I can get this feature on my non-EE phone? My carrier, MetroPCS, does allow wi-fi calling, but they don't sell the Z5 (and likely won't ever sell it).
You can try flashing the EE ROM with flashtool and see if you have that option. You will get carrier specific bloatware as well.
Would I be able to delete the bloatware? And I'm new to Android. When I flash, does it delete all of my settings and downloads and whatnot? I'm assuming I can back them up someplace in case it does, but like I say, I'm new to this. Also, where would I get the EE Rom from?
Look for Xperifirm. Download and install. You can get the firmware there. Next download flashtool version 0.9.19.10. You can bundle the firmware files into a ftf and flash, both with flashtool. Read the respective guides. To keep data, look at options when flashing and choose not to wipe user data. I would type it up but the instructions are on XDA, just search.
Neither WiFi calling or VoLTE will not work on the Sony Z5 unless your carrier/network offers the Sony Z5 for sale directly.
Note, WiFi Calling and VoLTE are two separate features but similar network functions on the operators side.
Note, MetroPCS is a sub-brand of the T-Mobile USA network so Metro is pretty much TMo USA.
Since T-Mobile USA does not offer the Z5 you will not be able to get WiFi calling working. In order for WiFi Calling or VoLTE to be supported the network operator must customize the ROM to include the WiFi calling and/or VoLTE network configurations. Unlike the typical SIM card and APN settings which are industry standard and can be adjusted manually. WiFi calling and VoLTE are somewhat more complex and include carrier/network specific security certificates to work. Apple can get away with supporting WiFi calling and VoLTE simply by swapping SIMs because the T-Mobile configs are loaded into their core iOS software which goes out to everyone around the world. (Probaly one of the reasons the iOS eats up so much storage...but i digress) Android runs much leaner and does not carry all the extra configs for all global networks...hence a carrier (i.e. T-Mo US) tweaked version of the Z5 ROM would be required for this all to work.
If T-Mobile USA offers the Z5 in the future you may be able to unlock the boot-loader and flash the T-Mobile specific ROM onto your phone and get WiFi Calling and VoLTE to work. But if T-Mo USA never offers the Z5 then you will never have WiFi calling supported.
Hope that helps....
WiFi calling and VoLTE are pretty much the same thing...just VoIP. And in most operators case WiFi Calling and VoLTE are the same back end network call processing systems. VoLTE is easier for the operator to secure as the customer is using the operators LTE and IP network. WiFi calling is seen on fewer operators as it requires more security since you can access the operators network from any public or private IP network.
---------- Post added at 10:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:20 PM ----------
and in theory you could extract the WiFi calling stack form the EE network's Z5 ROM and load it into a custom ROM. That would give you the software capability to support WiFi calling....But you will still need the T-Mobile USA WiFi calling fqdn for the WiFi border controller and their security certificates which are typically specific to a handset model. And again since TMo does not offer the Z5 there are no Z5 certificates.
Ah, well that sucks.
Yeah I feel ya, I love WiFi calling too
Some network providers have their own apps to allow it. Like in the UK, O2 network has an app called TU go
All hope isn't lost - Android M is supposed to have a provision for wifi calling. I've read posts of people with Nexus 6's on M (google play editions, so no carrier specific models) that have been able to use wifi calling. The current loss of band 12 (hoping this will change too) as well as the loss of wifi calling as a fallback has been the only drawback to this otherwise excellent handset. I absolutely love the thing. It just works, no fuss.
I know this isn't helpful, especially for those outside of the US, but this is why I ported my number to google voice a long time ago. VOIP works great over Wifi for me most of the time and when I have LTE reception, I can still use Voip albeit with increased data consumption.

Do you know of any guides for how this is supposed to work? I have Google Voice, and I have Hangouts, but I'm not sure how they're supposed to work in tandem for wi-fi calling. Would I be forced to actually open up the Google Voice app in order to make wi-fi calls? How is that any different from something like Talkatone?

Yeah, that's a bit of a pain in the ar$3. I install google voice and hangouts on any phone/tablet I get, Google voice is necessary to route all outgoing calls through GV so that my GV number shows up on my call partner's caller ID. (even though you can dial directly from the native phone dialer) I install Hangouts to manage sms and google talk (now just google hangouts but specified to avoid... or contribute to, (as the case may be) confusion) messages. You can also dial directly from Google Hangouts (this is the only option when you're only using Wifi, without cellular signal) So my thought flow kinda goes like this.
To make a call:
1)check for cell signal, if there is signal, use the native dialer to place a call
2) if there is only WiFi, use hangouts (or hangouts dialer) to place a call
Receiving calls: (If you need help I can tell you the specific settings)
1)when the phone rings, determine if it's ringing via Hangouts or the native phone app
2) check for cellular signal and wifi signal
3) if cell signal is 2g only, only answer with the native phone app (sometimes hangouts will ring first) and I have to wait for the native phone app to realize there is a call coming in (forwarded of course to my cellular provider number from GV)
4)if connected to WiFi, or I have LTE coverage (sometimes even on 3g) pick up the hangouts ring.
Sometimes I do miss calls because I'm waiting for the native phone app to ring when I'm on 2g, but hangouts rings first and the native phone app doesn't ring, but those instances are fairly infrequent and I can just call them back.

Also, sorry I've never used Talkatone, so I don't know if it works any differently. You don't have to have google voice installed to make / receive wifi calls via hangouts. you just have to have opted in to hangouts on your google voice account. The ONLY reason I still install GV is to make sure that when I make outgoing calls from the native phone app, my GV number shows up on the recipient's caller ID. They should really just bake this into hangouts and completely depreciate the GV app.
You could port the t-mobile wifi calling apps from the z3. I ported wifi calling to my att g2 from the t-mobile rom. It's not really that hard if you know how to read logcats
Many retail mobiles have "Wifi Calling" function but not any menu entry to enable , The APP can check the hidden function and enable it if can use.

Lineage OS 7.1.1: Unable to send SMS messages

Hello all,
I flashed my girlfriend's Sprint S5 with Lineage OS recently without a hitch, all services working perfectly. We ended up traveling, so she went to Sprint to set up a temporary international roaming plan. Everything was completely as expected abroad. When we got back, her phone would not send SMS messages.
We tried the usual airplane mode and such, and to no avail. Assuming something was wrong with the network configuration from travelling, we reset network settings. Didn't work. I then decided to just do a full wipe and re-flash of Lineage OS. Still doesn't work. I then resorted to going back to the stock TouchWiz ROM from Sprint. At that point, under the stock ROM, SMS were sending. Out of curiosity, we flashed back Lineage OS, and SMS will again not send. We noticed that if the SIM card is removed, SMS will send, but the phone would not be able to access 4G LTE. We also confirmed with Sprint that there are no restrictions on the account.
What could be causing this to occur only on custom Roms? Do we need to do a PRL update? If so, how does that work on stock Android?
Thanks in advance!
S5 sprint No outbound sms
I've had this problem for weeks....So far the only solution is using Google voice app....
I'm using LOS 7.1.1 20170207 kltespr nightly, LTE SMS can only receive, sending doesn't work. Only 3G SMS works.
Things I noticed:
Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> IMEI Information. When on 3G, all information is displayed here, when on LTE, only IMEI and IMEI SV is displayed, there's no PRL/MIN/MEID/ICCID anywhere, not even disabled or greyed out, just hidden completely.
ICCID also shows DUMMY_NV_ICC_SERIAL instead of the actual ICCID.
Same experience for me, I've been trying to find a workaround for over a month with no success. Alternative text messaging apps seem to work, but I don't trust 3rd parties with my SMS.
Unable to send SMS
Mike.
Which third party SMS app are you getting to work? Besides Google voice I have had no luck with any third party app?
I'm having the same issue. I'm on Resurrection ROM which is based on Lineage. Since update I can't send SMS at all other than via Google Voice. I can receive SMS and I can send/receive MMS.
I did find that if I change to 3g only for my network settings, I can send SMS. But then of course I don't get LTE data speeds for everything else. So the issue for me at least is tied specifically to LTE. Wondering if there is an APN or other setting I can change that would fix this but so far no luck finding anything.
Bug reported since 01/28
https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/BUGBASH-37
I've run into the same problem or similar. If I set my preferred network type to GLOBAL then I can send and receive SMS/MMS messages but I'm forced to either Roaming LTE or 3G. It's often stuck in 3G after a drive for any distance. If I force it to LTE, then SMS/MMS stops working and I can't place or receive calls either but the network will show up as LTE and Sprint.
To get there from Settings Home -> More (under Wireless and Networks) -> Cellular networks -> Preferred network type -> Choose Global.
Sometimes I can force it back to LTE but roaming if I switch temporarily to LTE then once it connects switch back to Global. Occasionally I have to put it in airplane mode to get the radios to reset and connect but some combo of switching network type and ending up in global and switching into and back from airplane will do the trick.
YMMV of course.
one way I fix it temporarily is to:
cell networks - carrier settings, let it crash
go in again and let it find your carrier
once connected, make a phone call at least to get it ringing
I can then make sms mms.
it's a rediculous work around but it works for me every time
SMS Sending Problem with Lineage 14.1 (31.07.2017)
Heyy
I'm not able to send sms from SIM 1 but can send sms from SIM 2 in Lenovo A6020a46 (2GB) on Lineage 14.1 (31.07.2017).
The same SIM is working good in another roms and Calling + Internet are working properly.
After dialing *#*#4636#*#* in Phone Information - SMSC Refresh then it appeared "Phone no.", 456 and I pressed Update.
But there was no process for saving or updating. Then I reentered in Phone Information but SMSC Shows blank.
What to do??? anybody help in this matter will be immensely appreciated.

I made this file using Odin with the steps from here. I flashed the file, set the connection to LTE aand it worked. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71582847&postcount=5908
To fix this issue with having LTE signal and sending SMS at the same time you have to open EnginneringMode app (or *#*#3646663#*#*) and check 'Sms over Sgs support' in Misc Feature Config tab.
Doesn't work because nothing comes up entering the code. Any idea?

If that code doesn't work for you, try to find an app called Engineering Mode MTK. Unfortunately I cannot attach any screenshots yet (I got less than 10 posts).
fix
there is an option in network settings (enhanced 4G LTE mode for comunications etc) i disabled that option and messaging works fine now. before unchecking this option i could only send sms only with phone on 3g mode, now it works fine. i think this option is for hd voice calls via 4g lte.
I see this is an old problem and I´m having the same problem. I can receive SMS, but I can´t send.
But to add to that, I couldn´t connect at all with my previous carrier and changed carrier after which I can use data, call and send SMS. I still can´t receive SMS.

Pixel 2 XL shows internet disconnected when making voice calls on Sprint

Pretty much what it says on the can. If I'm in a voice call and flip over to email, or a browser, all I get is "ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED" and even apps like third party file browsers(Astro) that assume network connectivity to load ads or the like hang up because there's no data network available during voice calls. Once I end the voice call the internet connectivity comes right back and works fine to load the same sites or use the same apps that I wasn't able to use before.
This is a black Pixel 2 XL, unlocked, ordered directly through Google, with a Sprint SIM that I double-checked against the online discussions for compatibility. The device works fine in most other ways. The activation was clean and everything else seems to work.
When I'm at home and on my Wi-Fi I can use both voice and data to multitask, so this is something in how it's working with the carrier. I've tried the LTE(Preferred), 3G, and Global network types in the "Preferred Network Type" section of the "Mobile Network" options for my carrier.
I've looked through all the settings and can't see anything like "enhanced calling" which was the solution with the single-radio Samsung devices. Any ideas how to get the Pixel 2 to share the radio during voice calls?
Thanks,
Steven
I don't think Sprint has the backend to support VoIP and LTE at the same time. So that's probably just a network limitation.
Sprint has one antenna so there's.o voice and data at the same time like GSM. Sprint is CDMA been like that since 2014

I actually have this issue on VZW! Has anyone seen this on VZW? Also, is there a setting to VoLTE? This is stock Android on a VZW Pixel.
Thanks!

Hello. I have a Google store bought Pixel 2. I just placed a call to my voicemail and was able to surf the web on my browser at the same time. It works both on WiFi and with WiFi switched off.

It is on, but it also seemed to stop having the issue on it's own. I wonder if it was a carrier issue?

Activate Project Fi account from an unsupported device (Successfully Accomplished)
**Although I accomplished this on a OP5T, there is no reason why the steps below should not work on just about any other Android device that is GSM based and capable accessing T-Mobile towers for cell service. The Fi app controls the whole procedure, it is what activates everything as well as sets the proper settings for MMS and VVM. As long as the Fi app believes the device it's installed on is one of the officially supported Fi devices then it will proceed with the activation of a new sim card**
Project Fi is (in my opinion) the best mobile provider in the US at the moment. It has great service, a radical approach to data costs which no other carrier offers at the moment (you pay exactly for what you use, nothing more nothing less), an unlimited everything plan for $80 but only if you consume 6GB+ of data in a bill cycle. If the next moth you only use 2GB of data then your bill is $40 (so you don't have to pay 80 every month just to have peace of mind. All data is charged at $10 per gig. Anything after 6GB of data in a bill cycle is free. The most you'll ever be charged in a particular month is $80 (20 for unli talk and text, 60 for 6GB of data if youve used that much). You also get access to data only sims which you can use in any other GSM devices and share the data attached to your account. Tethering is free and unlimited as well. I mean you can't beat it. However its only officially supported on 5 devices total and while you can start service and order a sim which can work in other GSM T-Mobile compatible devices, you must first activate the sim card inside an official device in order for your service to begin. Most people don't have one of those devices but they might want to use the service still. Well here's how you can....
I've been experimenting with activating service on a phone that's not officially supported and I am here to tell you that I've successfully managed to do so using a OnePlus 5T which is not an officially supported Fi device. The process was insanely simple and I've actually wondered from day one whether or not the process I accomplished this with would work, but I figured it was too simple for Google to not have considered and so I never attempted it. This was literally the final attempt I was going to make on this and it worked flawlessly.
STEP 1
Root your phone, go /system and edit the build.prop.... (/system means the "system" folder in the root partition, known as "/")
Change the following entries to what I have indicated, (you're only editing the words after the "=" sign)
Each entry below will say something different following the "=" sign depending on which phone you happen to be using... Everything to the left of the "=" sign should be universal across all Android devices...
So if you have a OnePlus 5 for example, then you will initially see "ro.product.model=OnePlus 5" and "ro.product.name=cheeseburger" you'll only change "OnePlus 5" and "cheeseburger" to match what I have written below....
***THESE OPTIONS ARE CASE SENSITIVE!! SO IF YOU WRITE "Taimen" INSTEAD OF "taimen" THEN IT WILL NOT WORK***
ro.product.model=Pixel 2 XL
ro.product.brand=Google
ro.product.name=taimen
ro.product.device=taimen
ro.product.manufacturer=Google
ro.build.product=taimen
ADD THE FOLLOWING ENTRY TO THE BOTTOM OF YOUR BUILD.PROP (the complete line, not just "true")
ro.opa.eligible_device=true
STEP 2
Save the new options added to build.prop and REBOOT YOUR PHONE BEFORE PROCEEDING! If you did everything correctly, then after a reboot when you go to "system" and then "about" you should see the device info reporting that your phone is a "Pixel 2 XL". This is how we are managing the activation, because the Project Fi app will check the device info when you open it the first time and based on the info it sees, it will either treat the phone as an official device, or one that's using a data only sim (which can not activate Project Fi account). Data only devices are restricted in that LTE speeds are reduced substantially, VVM does not work, it's possible to call and text with a few tweaks but MMS will not work outside of the Hangouts app. Official devices have no restrictions. As long as it believes the device is official, it will allow the activation to proceed regardless of the device you're using.
STEP 3
(For the next part:
DO NOT GRANT PERMISSIONS TO PROJECT FI APP UNTIL AFTER YOU'VE OPENED THE APP AND ACTIVATED THE SERVICE!! Upon completing this task you can then grant the necessary permissions to Project Fi app. If you have already granted permissions then clear app data for Project Fi app, uninstall, reinstall and follow my directions)
Download "Project Fi" app and insert the sim you ordered from Google. Open Fi app and choose the correct account (if theres more than one google account signed in on your device) and if you've done everything correctly then the service will activate. I've done this successfully on 3 different devices already.
Once you've completed this you can then revert all changes to the build.prop back to original settings and your account will be activated and the sim can be used in any GSM device compatible with T-Mobile's network from then on.
FYI:
If you want to be able to send mms messages from any text app besides Hangouts and have visual voicemail working as well then you should leave the build.prop the way it is after adding in the Pixel info. All services (except for network transitioning, you'll be limited to T-Mobiles service which is amazing in most areas anyway) will function properly when the device is seen as being a Pixel 2 XL. If you revert the build.prop back to stock following the initial activation of your sim card the you will lose visual vm, mms messaging (except if you don't mind using hangouts for text and mms), you'll have to add the correct apn info, and you'll only get LTE speeds of about 10 Mbps. Leave it the way you changed it to for activation and the phone will function exactly as it does on supported devices with the ability to mms from any text app, working visual vm and the APN will configure itself and your LTE speeds will improve substantially. I hit 60 Mbps consistently. There's an easy way to tell. If your carrier label states "Project Fi" then the build.prop is showing the phone as a device thats not officially supported and you'll have to deal with the extra issues I've stated above. If the carrier label reads "Fi Network" then you phone is seen as a supported device and everything will work perfectly with the exception of seamless network transitioning.
Hope this helps some people out!
not work on op3t. any ideas? i had to add in some of these lines as they didnt exist. project fi app crashes. mms problems
After I completed the above steps, my LG V30 boots to fastboot and won't go any further. Reboot and back to fastboot. Have to restore from backup before I can get back to the OS.
Any ideas why this might be happening?
