I don't think Sprint has the backend to support VoIP and LTE at the same time. So that's probably just a network limitation.
Sprint has one antenna so there's.o voice and data at the same time like GSM. Sprint is CDMA been like that since 2014

Hello. I have a Google store bought Pixel 2. I just placed a call to my voicemail and was able to surf the web on my browser at the same time. It works both on WiFi and with WiFi switched off.

It is on, but it also seemed to stop having the issue on it's own. I wonder if it was a carrier issue?

Does anyone know how to activate wi-fi calling on the Z5? I figured it'd be a menu setting, but I can't find it. I'm using the Taiwan version of the Compact and am using MetroPCS here in the States.

To answer my own question. It appears that wi-fi calling is only available with some carrier phones. So for instance, EE in England says on their setup page,
"WiFi Calling is only available on the EE version of the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact, bought directly from us in one of our stores, online at EE.co.uk, through our telesales team, or through corporate sales if you are a corporate customer."
So, I guess my question now is, is there a way to flash the phone so that I can get this feature on my non-EE phone? My carrier, MetroPCS, does allow wi-fi calling, but they don't sell the Z5 (and likely won't ever sell it).
You can try flashing the EE ROM with flashtool and see if you have that option. You will get carrier specific bloatware as well.
Would I be able to delete the bloatware? And I'm new to Android. When I flash, does it delete all of my settings and downloads and whatnot? I'm assuming I can back them up someplace in case it does, but like I say, I'm new to this. Also, where would I get the EE Rom from?
Look for Xperifirm. Download and install. You can get the firmware there. Next download flashtool version 0.9.19.10. You can bundle the firmware files into a ftf and flash, both with flashtool. Read the respective guides. To keep data, look at options when flashing and choose not to wipe user data. I would type it up but the instructions are on XDA, just search.
Neither WiFi calling or VoLTE will not work on the Sony Z5 unless your carrier/network offers the Sony Z5 for sale directly.
Note, WiFi Calling and VoLTE are two separate features but similar network functions on the operators side.
Note, MetroPCS is a sub-brand of the T-Mobile USA network so Metro is pretty much TMo USA.
Since T-Mobile USA does not offer the Z5 you will not be able to get WiFi calling working. In order for WiFi Calling or VoLTE to be supported the network operator must customize the ROM to include the WiFi calling and/or VoLTE network configurations. Unlike the typical SIM card and APN settings which are industry standard and can be adjusted manually. WiFi calling and VoLTE are somewhat more complex and include carrier/network specific security certificates to work. Apple can get away with supporting WiFi calling and VoLTE simply by swapping SIMs because the T-Mobile configs are loaded into their core iOS software which goes out to everyone around the world. (Probaly one of the reasons the iOS eats up so much storage...but i digress) Android runs much leaner and does not carry all the extra configs for all global networks...hence a carrier (i.e. T-Mo US) tweaked version of the Z5 ROM would be required for this all to work.
If T-Mobile USA offers the Z5 in the future you may be able to unlock the boot-loader and flash the T-Mobile specific ROM onto your phone and get WiFi Calling and VoLTE to work. But if T-Mo USA never offers the Z5 then you will never have WiFi calling supported.

WiFi calling and VoLTE are pretty much the same thing...just VoIP. And in most operators case WiFi Calling and VoLTE are the same back end network call processing systems. VoLTE is easier for the operator to secure as the customer is using the operators LTE and IP network. WiFi calling is seen on fewer operators as it requires more security since you can access the operators network from any public or private IP network.

and in theory you could extract the WiFi calling stack form the EE network's Z5 ROM and load it into a custom ROM. That would give you the software capability to support WiFi calling....But you will still need the T-Mobile USA WiFi calling fqdn for the WiFi border controller and their security certificates which are typically specific to a handset model. And again since TMo does not offer the Z5 there are no Z5 certificates.

All hope isn't lost - Android M is supposed to have a provision for wifi calling. I've read posts of people with Nexus 6's on M (google play editions, so no carrier specific models) that have been able to use wifi calling. The current loss of band 12 (hoping this will change too) as well as the loss of wifi calling as a fallback has been the only drawback to this otherwise excellent handset. I absolutely love the thing. It just works, no fuss.
I know this isn't helpful, especially for those outside of the US, but this is why I ported my number to google voice a long time ago. VOIP works great over Wifi for me most of the time and when I have LTE reception, I can still use Voip albeit with increased data consumption.

Do you know of any guides for how this is supposed to work? I have Google Voice, and I have Hangouts, but I'm not sure how they're supposed to work in tandem for wi-fi calling. Would I be forced to actually open up the Google Voice app in order to make wi-fi calls? How is that any different from something like Talkatone?

Yeah, that's a bit of a pain in the ar$3. I install google voice and hangouts on any phone/tablet I get, Google voice is necessary to route all outgoing calls through GV so that my GV number shows up on my call partner's caller ID. (even though you can dial directly from the native phone dialer) I install Hangouts to manage sms and google talk (now just google hangouts but specified to avoid... or contribute to, (as the case may be) confusion) messages. You can also dial directly from Google Hangouts (this is the only option when you're only using Wifi, without cellular signal) So my thought flow kinda goes like this.
To make a call:
1)check for cell signal, if there is signal, use the native dialer to place a call
2) if there is only WiFi, use hangouts (or hangouts dialer) to place a call
Receiving calls: (If you need help I can tell you the specific settings)
1)when the phone rings, determine if it's ringing via Hangouts or the native phone app
2) check for cellular signal and wifi signal
3) if cell signal is 2g only, only answer with the native phone app (sometimes hangouts will ring first) and I have to wait for the native phone app to realize there is a call coming in (forwarded of course to my cellular provider number from GV)
4)if connected to WiFi, or I have LTE coverage (sometimes even on 3g) pick up the hangouts ring.
Sometimes I do miss calls because I'm waiting for the native phone app to ring when I'm on 2g, but hangouts rings first and the native phone app doesn't ring, but those instances are fairly infrequent and I can just call them back.

Also, sorry I've never used Talkatone, so I don't know if it works any differently. You don't have to have google voice installed to make / receive wifi calls via hangouts. you just have to have opted in to hangouts on your google voice account. The ONLY reason I still install GV is to make sure that when I make outgoing calls from the native phone app, my GV number shows up on the recipient's caller ID. They should really just bake this into hangouts and completely depreciate the GV app.
You could port the t-mobile wifi calling apps from the z3. I ported wifi calling to my att g2 from the t-mobile rom. It's not really that hard if you know how to read logcats

i am honestly not sure, as i've never tried wifi calling on this phone.
if you dont get it working, i can tell you that if you have tmobile service you can visit tmobile store and ask for a "cellspot". it will use your home internet to produce a usable LTE/cellular signal that acts just like a normal tower. if i remember correctly it was a $25 deposit on the device and that was it.

You, I, and a whole lot of other people have this issue with the Moto-g. There are a bunch of threads around the web about this. I used wifi calling with my old phone (LG Optimus) on T-Mobile / MetroPCS and I loved it, especially when I'm out of the country, but the (hidden) WiFi calling setting on the g3 won't stay enabled, even though MetroPCS says I still have the service enabled. The consensus seems to be that only phones purchased thru them are allowed to use WiFi calling. I haven't been told this by the company myself, but a lot of folks say they have.
For now, I switch back to my old phone every time I leave the country. I get a foreign SIM for my Moto, and I use my old phone for sending and receiving US calls via WiFi.

I have a google Pixel on Android 7.1.2 on Verizon. I've had wifi calling activated the whole time that I've had the Pixel, on various cell providers, until yesterday. Decided to root my phone to be able to use "Radio Control", an app that will put the phone into Airplane mode when connected to wifi. Did that yesterday, and since then I've not been able to activate wifi calling. My phone is stock other than being rooted...I tried the Radio Control app, and it worked as it should. I've just removed it again, until I can get wifi calling activated. Oh, by the way, rooted by unlocking the bootloader, putting TWRP recovery on the phone, and then installing SuperSu via TWRP.
I've tried:
-Flushing app caches in "Storage", and flushing the phone app cache.
-Having "My Verizon" app on the phone.
-Resetting network settings.
-Activating with and without being in Airplane mode, always with wifi connected, though.
-Removing and restoring "Advanced Calling" setting.
The only thing I haven't tried is that one with the live chicken, a pentagram, and incense. That's my next thing to try.
Any suggestions? I'm really amazed that I can't activate wifi, since Verizon suggests this to stabilize wifi calling for their customers. I guess that they've never actually tried it themselves. Does anyone have wifi calling activated on a rooted Pixel? Do you remember doing anything in particular to get wifi activated, other than trying repeatedly to turn it on in the phone's settings?
By the way, the reason that wifi calling doesn't seem to work well on Verizon isn't wifi calling functionality, wifi calling itself works fine. It's because Verizon only allows the setting "Cellular preferred" for wifi calling. You cannot set "Wifi preferred" for wifi calling. This means that the cell radio is busy nearly all the time in a low cell signal area (like my house), working to make the cell signal usable. I noticed that there was much less battery drain while I was testing "Radio Control" since the phone was in Airplane mode, but I didn't have wifi calling activated at that point. Wifi was connected (of course), but wifi calling was not activated.
I hope that this is all clear, and that someone out there might remember something helpful for me. Or at least be able to tell me that wifi calling can or can't be activated on a rooted phone. If I can't root and get wifi calling activated, I'm going to sell the Pixel, as it doesn't meet my needs. I also have an iPhone that works perfectly with wifi calling on Verizon, but I'd much rather be using the Pixel.

I'm on Verizon and had that happen and found it was because of the theme i was using. Just had to reapply the theme to settings and all fixed. Also, I just checked the settings and you can set it to WiFi preferred.

Sounds good, just a couple of questions. First, which theme? Where do you access the particular theme in settings that you're referring to? The only theme that I've changed from default is the keyboard theme.
The other question is how can you change the wifi calling setting to WiFi preferred? Do you click on the wifi calling setting that has "Cellular preferred", and a menu comes up that includes "WiFi preferred"? I don't get that menu when I click on that setting, all I get is a setting for "roaming", and for 911 address, nothing else.
Also, which Android build are you on? I'm on Android 7.1.2, build NHG47K. Are you on that build? Or maybe N2G47E? I was wondering about that.
I'm on the 7.1.2 K build with a downloaded theme-not in settings. I think you have to set up the emergency address for wifi calling to work. And yes it's roaming preferences where you can change to WiFi preferred.
Just did a factory reset to try removing root and then activating wifi calling unrooted. Then add root again and see if wifi calling sticks or goes away....
So I'm currently unrooted and am not able to activate wifi calling. Sounds like time for a call to Verizon...Should be able to activate wifi calling with stock ROM. Have done this one before *smile*.
Things are not going well...looks like the Pixel may be heading out the door, too much time spent for no results.

Any other tips to get wifi calling enable? Whenever I click enable, it just goes to a generic error message and then nothing. So I can't even get to the screen to enter an emergency address. I have a ticket open with Verizon, but since I have an unlocked bootloader, I don't want to do a warranty exchange.
The rest of the story, used iPhone 6S Plus for a couple of months so that I could use wifi calling at home, and sold the Pixel. I did get very tired of the iPhone, even though wifi calling works perfectly on the iPhone on Verizon. So I got the new Verizon 4G/LTE Network Extender so I wouldn't need wifi calling here at home. That's allowed me to get another Pixel phone and use it at home without relying on wifi calling, now have 4/5 bars of cellular signal strength throughout my house. The Network Extender is a really nice piece of hardware, a great upgrade for the old 3G model that had no way to tell what was going on. The new 4G/LTE model has a web admin GUI page that has all kinds of useful status information on it. As well as a one-line display that shows each step in the startup sequence as it comes up.
The new Pixel works just as the old one with wifi calling on Verizon. "Cellular preferred" is the only setting available for wifi calling. Which means that if there's a low cell signal it will generally be used in preference to a strong wifi signal. Don't know why Verizon insists on this setting, I guess that they really don't want to support reliable wifi calling on the Pixel. I've thought about rooting my phone again to see if can get wifi calling working reliably, but now that the Pixel is able to use wifi calling and I don't need wifi calling at home, I'm inclined to leave it alone. In other words, getting wifi calling working perfectly isn't a good enough reason for me to root my phone *smile*. I can root it in the future if I have a good enough reason.
So the bottom line is that I'm pretty happy with the Pixel now, works as I need it to...just tried the Android O Beta, and liked what I saw there. Really glad that I'm back on Android.
Update: found an article here about how to change calling setting to "Wi-Fi preferred" for Pixel on Verizon...tried it and worked for me:

I've posted about this throughout the board, but I figured it would be better to make a thread since everyone keeps asking about it.
You'll need to install Google Voice and Hangouts Dialer and set them up. That's it. Just use the Hangouts dialer when making a call and it will do it over WiFi. If you wish to have people call you over WiFi, they'll have to call your Google Voice number.
This is a workaround, so you will be dealing with two numbers. Your carrier assigned number and your GV number. In my GV settings I have chosen to use GV for all calls, now I just have to get the number out to people. The other option is to port your current cell number over to GV, and then you won't have to notify anyone.
The VZW signal at my house is terrible, so this is what I do, and I can tell you it works perfectly. Hope this helps some of you with poor wireless reception.

Now it doesn't matter if the phone I buy supports my carriers WiFi calling or vice versa, and I'm only dealing with the one number I've had for years. Couldn't be happier.
Yeah, I just called ATT for help provisioning my daughter in law's replacement iPhone and while I had support on the phone I asked them about Wifi Calling and she said that our phone is not on the BYOD list for wifi calling. She said that very few phones are, it;s pretty much the iPhone 6 and 6s at this time.
Which is weird, because wifi-calling isn't even going through their network. That's the point of wifi calling, that you are using your phone on someone's wifi, so why does AT&T even give a rat's a$$ if you do that? So weird...

If Wifi calling shows up in the settings menu, you should be all set, and won't need this. However, if you're on Verizon, like me, or AT&T like the poster above, chances are it's not showing up in your settings menu. So, if you want to make calls over Wifi, this is the way to go.

I'm on Verizon so I can't speak for AT&T, but in my case I don't have the option in settings.
Frankly, I don't care about Wifi calling except for that once or twice a year I am both out of cell coverage, but somehow manage to have wifi and need to make a call. With unlimited minutes and data, the need for wifi calling is pretty slim, but it would be nice for that once in a blue moon where you do.
I don't see why AT&T has to "support" the one feature that doesn't go through their network anyway...
After using Google Voice for free home service for about eight years now, I've also gone all in with it on my cell phone. I ported my cell number over to Google Voice, so I don't have to alert anyone of a number change, and I love all the features it offers. I can make/receive calls from my cell, computer, or home phone ( my Wifi ONLY tablet, too, if I want). All using my cell number. The lone home phone will receive calls to both our home phone number and my cell number. Texting can be done from my cell or computer. It offers call screening, call recording, conference calling, visual voicemail, and do not disturb. Finally, it makes all my calls as VOIP (internet) calls. So as long as I have a data signal, be it from my carrier or WiFi, it makes crystal clear calls. I absolutely love it. I wish I had made the switch years ago.

This is Voice over IP (VOIP), not WIFI-Calling. WIFI calling is when your phone can seamlessly transition between cell network and WIFI, so you can receive network calls over wifi.

I purchased a Global version 1+7P (GM1917) directly from OnePlus. Then I signed up for T-Mobile service.
I am having problems with calls coming in over Wi-Fi. However, in Settings under Wi-Fi & internet, there is no Wi-Fi calling entry, so I cannot find how to turn off Wi-Fi calling.

I don't have the phone yet but look under mobile network or search in settings. On stock Android pie it's under the mobile network advanced settings

Under Settings -> Wi-Fi & internet -> SIM & network, there is Preferred network type, but that only set 2G/3G/4G. Nothing about Wi-Fi calling. I couldn't find anything called 'Mobile network'.

either install the new onepluslogkit app and *#800# into oneplus logkit/function switch/volte+vowifi switches on
This option will allow you to turn on/off as above. but in sim settings/ Sim1/Enhanced Communications
Or *#*#4636#*#* and turn off provisioning for volte/vowifi.

Phone app - three dots, top right - settings - at the bottom, SIM & network - SIM 1 - WI-FI Calling.

Tried the OnePlusLogKit, but the *#800# didn't bring up anything.
Tried *#*#4636#*#*, but when I toggled 'WiFi Calling Provisioned', it would "stick" - the Update button produced an error, and it reset on reboot.

That did it! I didn't realize there were more settings under SIM 1. The Wi-Fi Calling under it doesn't show up on searching in Settings. Thanks.
I hope one day wifi calling works with Verizon. The settings are greyed out

What kind of problems are you having with calls over wifi? I plan to use the 7pro on tmobile so I'm just curious

This may all be my misconstruing the problem. After turning off wifi call, I tried calling my wife (which was where I notice the problem), and we still couldn't hear each other. Yet when I call voicemail, I can hear it and I can change my announcement which shows that the phone does work both ways. Therefore, now I'm thinking that wifi calling was not the issue, and the fault is somewhere with t-mobile. The mystery continues.
The mystery deepens. Using Google Hangouts Dialer (which goes over wifi), calling my wife fails (nothing heard either way), but calling voicemail, again, works just fine. I just don't get it.

Thanks for this thread. I knew I saw that somewhere but forgot to check the SIM menu.
Why isn't it in settings search when even dev options are?
Why does TMO lie and way it is in the same spot as most phones, in their article specifically about the OP7p?
My issue in on a WiFi call, sometimes I can't hear them (but they can hear me), sometime from the call start other times mid-call, and turning off WiFi fixes it. I have 1000mb fiber and no other network issues. Too bad it doesn't work. Thanks for helping me disable it.
