From Galaxy S4 to G3? - AT&T LG G3

Hey all, I currently have the Galaxy S4 and I was wondering if upgrading to the G3 was a decent move or would it be better to wait for a phone down the road with more differences? I like what I have read about the G3 and it certainly would be an upgrade but I am just not sure if it is enough of one.
My Galaxy S4 had tons of issues after the upgrade to Kit Kat back in January. I reset the device which helped but I still lose WiFi randomly. Thanks for your feedback.

I came from Note 3 to g3. G3 is far superior in everyway ...This phone is great... You won't regret it...Dump that S4

I have to agree. I came from an S4 Int, and an AT&T S4 before that, and I have to say, the G3 totally smokes both of them.

Thank you both for the feedback. I am picking up a G3 tomorrow. I checked one out in a store and it looks really amazing. Definitely looking forward to it. Now to find a nice protective case.
Thanks again!

I had an S4 at one point and every other phone that has come out with the S5 being the exception. The G3 or M8 are the best devices going right now. If you like to tinker with roms, kernels, and aosp; then get the M8. If a smooth stock experience or root / xposed is all you need then get the G3. However, if the G3 ever gets the bootloader unlocked it will be a beast of a deal.

I too just upgraded from an S4 this week. The G3 is absolutely amazing. While at ATT just to see what was out there, G3 won hands down for me. The M8 was initially y the top contender for me but I hated the build. Wasted real estate whereas the G3 clean lines and virtually invisible bezels won me over. The screen is amazing and after slimming things down with root/xposed this thing is beasty!! Good luck. My biased vote is for the G3

Completely agree. I upgraded and the G3 is amazing. I ended up getting a Spigen Ultra Hybrid Case and I am very happy with everything.

I upgraded from the S4 to the G3 a month ago
The only things the S4 did better were
Get a data connection / signal
And noise suppression on phone calls
Other than those two things I do not miss my S4 at all

Coming from an HTC ONE, worth it?

I've had the HTC One since launch and have loved it so far...but when I heard about the Nexus 5, I ordered one. But now I'm having second thoughts, You guys think it's worth upgrading?

Bro im on your boat, im receiving my nexus 11/06, im sure its worth it 100%, the only thing that worries me are the speakers. other than that better screen better cpu.
I actually went from the HTC One to the Moto X, and now my Nexus 5 is coming on Thursday. For me, I never really used the speakers on the One, so personally that point (and really one of the only ones that the HTC One has on the N5, outside the aluminum chassis) doesn't matter too much for me.
For me, the Moto X was actually a more enjoyable phone to use than the One. I think it's the whole stock android experience that just makes me happier to use my phone. I did put AOSP on my One, but I did go back to Sense just because I wanted the IR to work at the time. I just sold my One the other day to fund my N5 purchase.
I ordered the Nexus 5 because of it being future-proof and it gets the Android updates first. I absolutely love my One and I will probably miss the speakers more than anything. Besides the speakers on the One, I have no regrets in ordering the Nexus 5.

What makes you think better screen? Theres so many people on craigslist dumping there nexus phones. The phones are purely designed for flashoholics. When samsung made the nexus they always made sure it was a step below the galaxy line. LG will always make sure its a step below the G series. The phone dosent compare to an S4, G2, Note 3, HTC ONE and from what ive been reading the moto x just blows it out the water.
My co-worker recieved his today so i had a hands on experience and i wouldnt take a nexus + cash for my htc one. I have 2 upgrades i can use and wouldnt dare use them on the nexus. Its the same thing every year. Alot of hype, google store sells out bc people wanna try to flip em like there an iphone. Then they hit stores and the value drops significantly. Nexus phones never hold value.

Also in the same boat and think it will be worth it. Went from a Nexus 4 to the HTC One and currently awaiting for my Nexus 5 to arrive tomorrow. Definitely going to miss the One's speakers. I just hope the camera quality is roughly the same or better on the Nexus. Judging from reviews, it's hit or miss. Hopefully they come out with software updates.
Ordered a One when they first came out, switched back to a Nexus 4 a couple months ago, and now I've moved onto the Nexus 5 and just sold my One yesterday. The One is still a fantastic phone, but like most of us, nothing beats vanilla Android. You won't regret it one bit.
I currently have the One and the Nexus 5. Camera experience is way better on the One. Screen is more vibrant on the One, but the n5 is equally as sharp. The sound on the One is awesome, but the n5 isn't as bad as some say. It's louder, but didn't have the refined sound. But not too bad. N5 seems faster, but could be negligible. Vanilla android is awesome, but sense has some cool features, like the camera software and IR Blaster. They both feel great on your hand. Battery, it's too soon to tell, but I think the One is slightly better, but it makes sense, same size battery, smaller screen, lesser processor. Again, negligible.
If camera is truly important, the One is better, otherwise the N5 is amazing and you won't be disappointed.
Also, unless you NEED vanilla android on a nexus, then you don't need the phone. Don't forget plain KK is coming to the One within the first 15 days, so soon.

Cool! I am not the only one
Had One since launch, N5 got here today. Definitely much better software, don't even mind the finish. Expecting camera/speakers to be worse but I knew that when I ordered and had already dealt with that loss
I like sense too, but if you want stock android then the GE roms/CM etc still don't stack up to a Nexus (actually recently getting the N7 and seeing how good it was just on stock rom really made my decision for me).
M.
Hearing early reviews saying the speaker sucks has got me worried, the camera too. The screen quality seems to be about equal, specially since it is bigger. Build wise the HTC ONE looks amazing and feels amazing in my hand. I think I will know if it was worth it when I feel it in my hand.

Thats good to know! I got the Moto X as a work phone, so that's really the only reason I have one. I wouldn't have spent my own money on it to be honest, here in Canada it's too expensive and we don't get the customization options like the US. I'm stoked to get the N5, and so is my girlfriend. She's coming from a Galaxy S3, and I finally convinced her to go stock android!

I work for AT&T and I happen to own all the phones you listed. I swap between all of them, running 3 at a time (work phone, personal phone, and one on a spare line that I got before getting the job). My current lineup is the Galaxy S4, note 3, and LG G2 I literally just gave my wife my HTC one last week. With the exception of the S4 and Moto X, all these phones are great in theiir own right . You could make an argument for any of of them. But I have to say, it makes me laugh to see the S4 and Moto X in the same sentence as the other phones you listed. The Note 3, HTC One, and Nexus 5 are in their own class. The LG G2 is alright, but you have to change some settings to subdue that horrible UI lag. Moto X and S4 are more hype and marketing than deliverance. Actually, I was extremely excited for the Moto X and begged my boss to let me have one of the stores 2 models. Unfortunately the battery life killed the experience for me. I had higher expectations for a device low on specs but was supposed to be "refined". Honestly, I'm feel like the Nexus 5 is almost like the Moto X rehashed and done better.
To anyone having second thoughts, coming from the one, don't. The one may be the best phone I ever owned. The fact that it's still amount the best almost 8 months later and after the fall lineup release is proof of that. But I went With the Nexus because it has a longer end of life, lighter, and just a hair faster. (Though my Note 3 and Galaxy gears watch is fun too, but I only have it for another 2 weeks until I have to give it back). Don't pay too much attention to people freaking out. It's all in what we want out of our phones.
It's 100% completely worth it. This phone is amazing and I don't thing anybody coming from any phone will be disappointed. Now with that begin said I do miss 2 things which are the HTC One speakers and the IR blaster. But there is so many better aspects to this phone that I'm willing to overlook those two things happily.

No because the HTC two is probably around the corner and if you love your boom sound, you will be very disappointed.

NEXUS 5 is a steal.....

Anyone thinking of jumping ship?

So this phone was supposed to be the greatest thing since white bread, so I sold my beloved Moto X for this puppy and am regretting it. The only things this has better than the X are the camera and the screen. Other than that it is buggy, lags and has all sorts of issues. I am rooted and have tried everything but I'm at wits end. I think I'm jumping ship anyone else at this point ?
I'm the complete opposite. I am genuinely happy with this device, and i haven't be able to say that in a wile. I was on the Samsung train and had all the Galaxys from the skyrocket-S5, so maybe bc its "different" is why im so happy with it. The data drops and headphone jack issue are the only 2 downers for me right now. On the flip side, the battery is beast and screen size to form factor is perfect for me.
Yes I can agree with the Samsung mess. Only those with the moto can get it , hard to explain how a phone which should be sub par actually makes these other phones seem like poo
I came from a note 3 and i wouldn't jump back......i have no issue with the phone at all.....no lag....no issue with aux....the only minor thing is that it gets warm during heavy gaming.....(but that happens to every phone that i own...)....the other issue is that i can't use ART as my car's bluetooth doesn't like it....but dalvik is fine for me...
took a bit of time debloating all the ATT stuff from the phone....but...there isn't that much to debloat compare to sammy's TW.....
Well I won't go to Samsung its either Motorola or nexus that's it

I've had no issues with this phone. I'm very happy with it. Been trying to find something I don't like but so far nothing. It's fast and my phone is totally lag free. I'm rooted and running ART. Loving this phone.
I'm happy you all are having such a great time but it seems that a majority are not if you just browse this forum
Oook. Mine runs flawlessly....not rooted on ART to boot. Considering complaints tend to be more vocal than kudos, I'd take the "majority" metric with a grain of salt.
Just look at other phones and there threads. I've been a member here for a long time. This phone has issues

Not saying that they don't they're are just a lot of issues on here some which shouldn't be with the big processor
Last year, just about this time, I was using the Optimus G Pro and getting ready for the Note 3 release. The G Pro was in the same boat... root but no boot loader unlock so ROMs, and more importantly, modified kernels, were non-existant.
Seems as soon as the Note 3 released, and I bought one, the bootloader was cracked on the G Pro and the goodies flowed like candy.. :fingers-crossed:
I'll definitely still get the Note 4, but I'll keep my G3 this time.
Its crazy because the only phone I didn't really I want to mess with and get rid of was my moto x everything else even the nexus 5 I wanted out. The only and I mean only reason I switched was better screen. Although now that seems stupid

Well then the X+1 sounds like it just might be the perfect phone for you. Of course we will have to wait and see if the software is as good as the X. If it is, then the larger screen might appeal to you.
Personally I love the G3. I'd love it even more if someone would crack the bootloader, but I'm quite content with it right now.
The X+1 is like Obi wan ....my only hope
Im going to agree, i dont know if its the phone or at&t but its slow. Every time i use data i have to toggle wifi or 4glte to get to wake it seems like. My m8 was great.....
It's a pain really. I mean there are some really great things on this phone while others just make it feel crappy
I came from a Note 3 and I haven't looked back. I have used the Moto X and honestly its terrible in comparison. The screen is awful and its so tiny it hurts my eyes. I have nothing against Motorola, I just don't like the moto x. My G3 isn't laggy at all and overall its much more smooth than my old Note 3 or my wife's S5. The moto I used was smooth, but nowhere near as smooth as my nexus 7. I guess it all comes down to preference and for me I love Mt G3, in fact I've now had the F400S, D850 and my F460 is coming in a few days. It just took a while for me to find the one I wanted and still have qi.

S6 is sooooooo much better

hate to be "that guy", but I had the g3 before and recently bought a flex 2. I tried rooted and stock, factory reset, 2 different phones (I bricked the first one). I finally gave up and bought the galaxy s6. Wow.. HUGE difference! The s6 is nearly perfect. I really wanted to like the flex as much, I loved the curve and the size and the way it fit in my hand. But I LOVE the performance on the s6. Love it. Anyway, just sharing. Lg dropped the ball on this one...

We have seen S6, and it is far from perfect!
I do not believe you could possibly have held and used the s6 and say it isn't closer to perfect that any other phone to date. I'm not a fanboy, I was over Samsung and their lookalike products... But they did anAMAZING job with the s6. You have to accept when a company makes a superior product and this is it.Maybt the g4 will be even better, I would love more competition, but for right now Samsung is doing the damn thing.
Yes. I had flex 2,while waiting for firmware to be fixed, I bought a s6. I will aggressively chase LG to fix my flex2 since I have another phone now.

Flex 2 could have been great lg dropped the ball. For the people that kept the phone i think if you didn't have problems like most of us its perfectly fine to keep it. I almost loved the phone until all the issues i had. S6 Is nice and the g flex2 . I went the other route and got a note 4 and couldn't be happier.

I totally disagree. I was at the Sprint store and three people returned the S6. The reason bee a lot of "lag" so were people with HTC one 9.
The reason is 5.0, not the hardware, it's draining the battery and causing lag. We are all in the same boat. It's the Qualcom CPU, it heats up, slows the system down.
Some device already has 5.1 and the problems have gone away.

Oh Please
The Lg Flex2 is a classy phone period. The way it feels in your hand and the way it looks, it's beautiful. The S6 is the same old thing, without ingenuity.
Once the Flex2 gets lollipop 5.1, you will back to the Flex2. This a fast, amazing phone, don't even have to root it since it can clear cache and back up to the LG cloud. No need to root.

I will agree with everything else though.
As for everyone else, I don't have lag issues. And it might be the 3GB of RAM that apparently a lot of other phones don't have. The only issues I REALLY have with this device is battery life. It's about half or less than the first gen. I could play games on the flex for like 10 minutes and still be at 100%. I open my email for 2 minutes on flex 2 and I'm already down to 95%.

Totally agree with you. Beautiful piece of kit, everyone is impressed with the funky display too.. Loving it
Love the Flex2. no chance of damaging phone screen or camera when putting on surface. almost seems like a logical design for me.
easily fits into shirt pocket or back and from jeans pockets.
had note2 and note 1 and just got tired of touchwhiz; could not stomach another samsung although they were very good devices.
I had a v10 G Flex 2. It sucked. I rightly panned it in a magazine review. I had a S6, great camera, overall nice but terrible lag and stalling. Now back on a v15 GF2 and the difference from the original is night and day.
It's quick, smooth, camera is good and while it still gets warm and battery is just average, it's a very likeable phone.
I've spent my own money on a GF2 - they are incredibly good value - and I love the fact it's a bit different.
To caveat all that, the S6 with 5.1 might be a big improvement too...

I know Knox doesn't prevent or slow down the device I just didn't like Samsung adding it into their software system. I know I could freeze and delete some Knox crap or whatnot but It shouldn't be force upon us to have it in our devices in the first place.
Every year it's like their always adding something stupid which was one of the reason I switch. I got a nexus 6 which is my first nexus device ever and yea I'm a believer now after experiencing pure vanilla android without the Stutter's and lags and full of bloatwares or useless security apps like Knox.
I have a co worker with the S6 edge and honesty it's ashamed that it's still stutters and lag a bit out the box and it sucks that you have to go through the mission of deleting so much stuff just to get it to run a tad bit smoother. Nexus 6 showed me the real android experience and from now on that's the only devices I'm sticking to.

S6 vs Turbo 2

I'm torn between the Turbo 2 and the S6. My default position is the Turbo 2, 'cause I've been using Motorola since the Droid 1 (D1, Razr and Gen1 Moto X), but the company has changed a lot since then and Lenovo has been less than impressive so far.
I like the look (been messing with motomaker a lot) and feel of the Turbo2, and shatterproof display is very nice since I've been using a Moto X with a cracked screen for a couple months. However, the locked bootloader coupled with Moto's slow rollout of updates in the last couple years is kinda a downside. Granted I've run stock on my Moto X for 2 years, but still, I thought the whole locked down phone things was just a phase. Doesn't seem to be much dev activity in regard to the Turbo 2 so far. I'm also pretty bummed there's no one hand mode like LG and Samsung have.
The S6 is a pretty good phone too, and is nicely open to dev/mod community. I don't like touchwiz, but seems like it can be removed with out too much of a hassle. And my tiny hands really like the idea of one hand mode. I don't like the feel of the S6, it just feels kinda cheap, plus it doesn't have shatterproof glass, and I hate cell phone cases.
Basically, I want the Turbo 2 hardware with some/most of the OS/software of the S6.
With the Turbo 2 community being pretty small, I thought I'd get some input from S6 owners

Please be aware that the S6 has a locked bootloader as well, and no root capability after OE3(?), so unless you get a model that's been sitting on the shelf and stop it from updating, there is no opportunity to root. It is very easy to use another launcher if you don't TW. I don't think that it feels cheap at all, but slippery is another matter. I won't use mine w/o a case.

So all the custom roms and root stuff I see here is for people with older phones and i won't be able to root a new one from the store? Well I guess that tilts things into the Turbos favor.
I'd get a Dev to verify, but from everything I've seen on these forums, that is the case. If it is still on 5.02 out of the box you can root it, but once it gets 5.1 you are done.
My wife has the S6 and is very happy with it. A great display and a petty good camera. She just uses it, and could care less about the specs. I just got the Turbo 2, coming from the Turbo 1. I especially like the Moto apps like Moto Voice, Actions, Display and Assist. I can't imagine owning anything else.

To root the S6 you need to be on build OE3? or earlier. Once you get to OF1 you are screwed. Your best bet at getting an S6 with an old enough build would be a 128gb model. I have a 128gb one myself and it came with OC3 out of the box, so I rooted right away and froze updates so now I'm good.

I did that too. I bought a 128gb verizon s6 on ebay. when it arrived I didn't activate it on verizonwireless and instead hooked it up to wifi and set the phone up including root with pingpongroot. That blocked it from updating and now I'm happily 'stuck' with OC3 until I choose.

keep my note 5 or my rooted lgg4

so i got my lg g4 back for the 3rd time of selling it and customers have sold it back to me.
its rooted and unlocked but no twrp
in the short couple months ive had my crappy old tore up note 5 with no usb port.... i think im in love.
i love so many features from both phones i cant make up my mind which one i will sell... im not hard up for money i dont have to sell either but xmas time one would make a great gift and a little extra cash in my pocket.
what are your guys thoughts
You can fix the usb port quite easily.
I'd stick with a LG G4 over a Verizon Note 5, speaking as somebody who used both when Samsung refused to repair my note 5 on holiday as it wasn't purchased from the States. Sure the LG G4 runs hot and has poor battery, but Android N helps solve this. The Verizon model of the N5 is worthless in my opinion.
I'd stick with the Note 5 personally. Better processor, better camera, more RAM, better battery life, AMOLED screens look nicer than LCD. I have a Verizon Note 5, and if you don't like the software, you can simply replace the Samsung apps with Google's with a bit of work. Also the theming engine on the Note 5 is pretty great. The G4 software is pretty bland, though options with root are pretty cool. The Note 5 can hang with modern high end, the G4 feels very mid range now.
