This forum seems to be really negative. And it scares people away. I don't want to start a thread that says "OMG, I love this phone so much" because nobody wants to read that and, well I don't love a phone that much. So I figure why not have a thread that has all the known issues? So people can have a better idea of what to expect.
Well, to start off, I want to say there is no perfect phone in this market. Every phone has issues. Anyway, you will use it for only 18 months and then throw it away. So don't act like you are making a life decision.
1. hardware related
(1) Random shut down.
Possibility: 1/5. Reported by some users. I personally never have this issue.
Solution: exchange for a new one.
(2) Poor battery life.
Possibility: 5/5. Don't have high hopes on battery because it is a huge smart phone. But don't freak out if it only lasts for 5 hours in the first day. It will get better (much better) after several cycles.
Solution: There are tricks all over the internet.
(3) Soft key backlighting isn’t tied to screen timeout
Possibility: 5/5. Soft key backlight time is about 2s. It can't be changed, no matter what the screen timeout is.
Solution: none.
2. software related
(1) Performance Lag.
Possibility: 4/5. As powerful as this phone is, you will feel sluggish once in a while. For example, transition delay, touch response delay. Most annoying: phone freezes when installing apps from the market.
Solution: by using Launch Pro or ADW, you can have a better and smoother experience. But the phone still freezes when installing apps. All you can do is to wait for the installation to finish. Things might get better after the 2.2 update. But there is no official date for Froyo in the US market yet, so I can't say that's a solution.
(2) GPS
Possibility: 4.5/5. Seems like lot of users have this problem. Few users claim theirs are fine.
Solution: None. Samsung promises a fix by the end of Sept.
(3) Sideload apps
Possibility: 5/5. You can't install out-of-market apps.
Solution: You can root. If you don't want to ruin your warranty (I don't), you can use Sideload Wonder Machine. I used it for Genie Widget and Angry Bird. Both worked fine.
(4) Calendar
Possibility: 5/5. When adding an event, the default calendar is the locally "My calendar". And it won't get synced to your online calendar. You have to manually change it to your gmail calendar EVERY TIME.
Solution: none.
(5) Browser brightness setting
Possibility: 5/5. There is a separate brightness setting for browser. It could be annoying when the screen has different level of brightness.
Solution: none.
(6) Music player
Possibility: 4/5. Stock music player doesn't recognize playlist. You might be frustrated to find an alternative one. you may have to pay for a music player.
Solution: I want to say none. You can always find one in the market. But it was not a pleasant experience for me.
(7) status bar trick
Possibility: 2.5/5. You can slide on your status bar to change the brightness. It could be a welcome trick or annoying feature. Screen brightness is so important to your precious battery life, sometimes you don't want to accidentally slide on your status bar.
Solution: none. You can love it or hate it.
I just want to list all the issues that you'll have. Potential buyers can make their own judgement. Please reply if you can think of any other problems. But please don't say things like "you can always root" or "flash your rom", or "there is an fix coming soon".
[update] A lot of the items I listed were not defective issues. But they could be complaints. They could be something you don't like and you can't find a way to change. And i don't care if it's from AT&T or from Samsung or from Google. As long as it might be a problem, I am listing it here.
Calendar:
Does not recognize phone numbers or URLs in any part of calendar event (no click to call or launch web page)
Contacts:
Looking up GAL contact (global address list) only available from compose email screen, and only returns email, not phone number.
Email:
No control over which folders sync (Exchange); No select all option; other minor issues

Agreed. Most new phones especially complicated ones have issues. But it would be nice for it to work as advertised.
We don't really know yet if some of these are software or hardware. The GPS issue for one looks like software but may turn out to be hardware. Too soon to tell. Let's hope they have a real fix for it because even though it is not critical, it is a useful multi-purpose tool that many of us rely on daily. I expect it to work. I am patiently waiting for the promised fix but if it doesn't prove reliable, I have to find a different phone.
Random shut downs. I returned one Captivate because of this. Again, hard to tell if its hardware or software but I am assuming hardware and returned mine.
Poor battery life. Not as much an issue as it is a relative expectation. Seems a lot of the faster Android devices and even the IP4 run out of juice pretty quickly. My BB 9700 will last twice as long but maybe that's because the screen is half the size, half the resolution and half the brightness.
Also, a handful of Captivates have a problem getting into recovery/download via the three button method. Only a handful as of now.
As for the software issues... well, let's hope we get plenty of good ROMs from Samsung and plenty of modded ROMs from the smart folks around here!

ok well I want to address these one at a time
1) random shutdowns - true, seems very hit or miss on who it affects and how often.
2) poor battery life - I have to strongly disagree with this. almost everyone seems capable of eeking at least a day out of their battery even with heavy usage. if you aren't getting at least a day, either the battery or unit is defective in some astounding way or you're using GPS while streaming videos for 7 hours a day.
3) soft key timeout - this isn't an "issue." if the iPhone 4's antenna thing is a "total non-issue," so is this. it may not be the most sensible decision to have them on different timers (it would be preferred that we could manually set this), but this isn't an "issue," this is just personal preference. I personally don't mind it at all since I rarely press them when I'm using my screen, and if you truly use this phone, it isn't hard to remember where they are
1) performance lag - true, but I'm kind of willing to believe a lot of this will be fixed when froyo is released. to me, it's pretty obvious samsung is working on this since the JH2/JH3 builds are way faster than JF6 without any modifications.
2) GPS - definitely an issue I can agree with. Samsung should have been on this faster (even the Fascinate users are claiming issues already). they should have rolled out of a fix by now considering how many phones they have out there in the world.
3) sideloading apps - seriously? this isn't Samsung, this is AT&T. If you've got an android phone on AT&T, this is what you're going to have to live with without personal modification. don't like it? stop being on AT&T
4) Calendar - can't comment, don't use
5) Browser Brightness - again, a non-issue. you can use the slider bar to change it on the fly (which is a massive improvement over other android phones IMO) or set it to whatever you'd like
6) Music Player - can't comment, replaced with stock 2.1-update1 music player for personal preference
7) status bar trick - I don't see how this is even considered an issue. if you're manually setting your brightness, does it make more sense to do this or go into settings, sounds and display, brightness, and adjusting it there to change it right back moments later? no. I personally think this was a brilliant move on samsung's part. I keep my screen on the lowest brightness almost always, and then I realize I need to turn it up because the sun is too bright, so I can just fix it instantly by pulling it down, turning it up, and then turn it down when I'm done. if you're doing automatic brightness, this "trick" doesn't even work
edit: I'm just saying that if you're going to bash the phone for these issues, let's agree what is actually an issue and what is just user-preference related

I agree - separate bugs that affect 90% of the phones from other variables.
My phone has never rebooted or shutdown on its own, and it is not something 90% of the people are complaining about - unlike GPS.
Battery life is subjective and based on usage. Compared to my iPhone it is about the same. BB - definitely better, but as mentioned the screen is smaller, and BB controls the sync settings - so not a fair compare.
Music player has a workaround for playlists - move music to phone, go to recently added playlist, select all, create new playlist. Not ideal, but a different way to do things. There are free music players too.
Some things - like the soft key lights - are sort of a gray area - is this a feature implementation or a bug? Probably a feature issue. It is easy for one person's feature request to be another person's bug report.

What I am trying to do, is to list the issues (or complaints if you will) that have been posted. The issues I listed might not necessarily be defective of the phone. They were the things that may raise your eyebrow. I tried my best to be objective.
In terms of user-preference, I won't post it if it is really user-preference. The issues I listed, e.g., status-bar trick, brightness setting, they are NOT configurable. If you like them, great. But if not, sorry there is NO way to change them. That's why I list them as issues. I want to list all the potential issues/complaints so that potential buyers have a better idea what to expect.

OK, i got you. But some of these issue/complaints are from a vocal minority and I would say they unfairly describe the captivate - especially things like battery life and random shutdowns. Battery life depends on what you do and where you are located. Reboots are probably a hardware issue involving a small group.
IMHO if you are going to mention hardware issues that affect an uncounted minority, then you have to add all the weird stuff people have returned phones for - speaker not working, screen pixel out, volume switch, etc.

Well, if there was a loooong thread about screen pixel or speaker, I would have listed them already. Unfortunately, I only see several threads about random shutdown. I did list it as low possibility though, meaning it only happens for a very small percentage of users.
Would there be any merit to posting some of the individual issues as their own thread with a yes/no poll, so that we can see relative numbers about how many people are being affected by a particular problem. Granted, it wouldn't be "scientific data" as the typical poster to those threads would probably be users looking for the info or having the problem, but still...
FWIW, I have a Captivate that is going back today due to the randon shut down problem. Funny enough, the GPS works perfectly.
Sony xperia Z3 Dual D6633 Android 5.0.2 Build 23.1.1.E.0.1
Hi there,
Upgraded my Z3 to lollipop last week and, despite the fact that the upgrade itself was flawless, I think I went from a device that used to work like a charm to one full of annoyances.
On day #1, noticed the batt drain skyrocket. 3h after disconnecting it, it was at 68%, half way through the morning. WTF? was my first thought. On a typical day on kitkat, I was able to end the day at 40% at least.
The second thing I´ve noticed was the phone app. It starts giving me errors, saying that the "network could not be reached" when I try to dial a number. If I insist for 4, 5 more times, it crashes. Dialing is only possible again if I reset the phone.
The third thing is the lock screen. It seems that lollipop has a drop down menu that makes it possible to enable/disable lots of things, like communications and even setting the phone in airplane mode. Imho that´s a huge liability / security risk and it appears that there is no way around that.
Still about the lock screen, it seems to have a bug: if you have any activesync account setup, not notifications will show up, no matter how you configure it (to show all or hide sensitive content).
So, I had only one thing to do, after reading forums etc... factory reseting it.
Surprise! All problems are still there.
Does any1 have any tips on those?
Thanks in advance.
There will be a widget on one of the screens which keeps refreshing itself and I found that to be the battery killer on my 6603.
Did you use any specific app to pinpoint the culprit?
1. It is possible that the battery levels are calibrating and will be imprecise for a while after the update, using the device normally for a couple of days will fix it, or at least this is what I observed in many phones I owned.
2. This is very weird and I can't help you with. If not even factory reset did help you may have some corrupted data on one of your contacts maybe? Try to make a thread about this issue on the Sony forum.
3. I noticed that as well, but even on pervious versions you could turn off the phone so I don't think it changes anything. Make sure to disable the multi user options that would allowanyone to add a new user from the lock screen.
4. Another weird thing, I use exchange accounts on my phone and I don't have any problem on mine. See point 2.
Under
settings>sound and notifications>when device is locked
Set to hide sensitive notification content or don't show notification content at all.
This should fix lock screen displaying email notifications from your exchange account.
Also, unlock phone, pull down notifications, pull down again to reveal quick settings, hit the edit button (pencil) and remove icons but clicking and holding and drawing them to the top. Unfortunately this removes them even when phone is unlocked but of your worried about unauthorised toggling of things on off its the best you can do I think.
As for battery drain, check the battery usage in
Settings>power management
Make sure stamina mode is on, toggle it off then on to make sure.
Select battery usage and check to see if any apps are using more than they should. Make sure brightness is set low but enable adaptive brightness under display settings.

That's not a smartphone anymore, with all functions shut down and brightness low.
This phone has the best screen, use it at least 50% brightness.
I have no issues with the brightness down. It bumps up nicely in brighter conditions and will even max out in daylight. If I ever need it brighter then it's easy to boost temporarily. It's a small price to pay for nearly 24 hours of battery with 5 hours screen on time.
I never mentioned shutting down functions. The only thing I mentioned removing was the toggles that concerned the op on the quick settings. Removing mobile data and aeroplane mode from quick settings hardly cripples the device, I never use these anyway.
I don't think it very useful that there's not more customisation available here such as a complete set of separate lockscreen settings. But if all you can do is comprise then what else can you suggest?
I don't think unlocking the bootloader and installing a custom ROM is something the op wants to do.

You said stamina.
Stamina means already some functions off.
Update:
1. Batt drain
Remains without an explanation. My daily use profile is basically the same as before the update. 3PM and I am at 28%, with stamina on. I can´t recall a day, running kitkat, that I would hit the charger at night with 28% of batt remaining (and I still have 4h to go). It was always on 40% ish. GSAM is reporting that 47% of the batt drain is caused by apps and, from that, 30% is represented by android core apps + android system + kernel. I might be wrong, but I think it is related to reindexing, contact + agenda sync etc and it will probably get lower eventually (I hope!)
2. Phone App giving errors
I think I have isolated the problem. It seems to be caused by TrueCaller.
3. Lock screen
Regarding the drop down menu, It is clear now that what I think is a problem is, in fact, by design and there is no way around it without rooting. But regarding the notifications, I just removed both activesync accounts and I started getting notifications in the lock screen again. So, my guess is that there is a policy of some sort that is being interpreted by the phone as it should hide all notifications from the lock screen.
In fact, there are lots of things that got blocked / disabled because of those policies. Here is a list of things that were disabled and now appear to be working again, after the removal of the activesync accounts:
. notifications are showing again in the lock screen;
. smart lock;
. screen lock options (none, swipe, pattern);
note: I thought that I would be able to enable services in Accessibility, like LastPass or App Advisor by Norton, but it still does not work (I try to enable any of them, but pressing "ok" on the warning dialog does nothing and the only option working is "cancel").
Thinking about resetting it again...
Hi, if problems are persistant you can always downgrad software at KitKat by using FlashTool and wait Lollipop 5.1 (5.1 will probably solve many problems).

A new firmware version has dropped for the Z3 which I think fixes your issues with notifications.
I received it OTA yesterday, I'm running the Balkans customisation.
Thank you for the tip! I hope it does! Will keep it posted here just for the reference. I am starting to feel other "symptoms" as well, like bluetooth instability (you pair a device and it stops working, have to pair again).
.
Just hit another weird thing.
I am not being able to create a new vpn connection. I am trying to use the PureVPN and IPVanish client software, but when I try to setup the conection, I receive a disclaimer, saying that my traffic might be monitored, with a "CANCEL" and "OK" options. The OK doesn´t work, only "CANCEL".
My device is encrypted and I have also noticed that I am not able to decrypt it.
Also, If I go to Accessibility and try to enable a service, the same thing happens: a disclaimer appears, saying that the service might observe my actions, with a "CANCEL" and "OK" options. The OK doesn´t work, only "CANCEL".
Any ideas?
Ok, just a quick fup: the ability to create VPNs from apps is disabled if you encrypt the phone. It seems that if you create if before encrypting, it won´t be disabled; but you wont be able to create a new vpn from an app downloaded, after encryption.
Regarding the Accessibility > Services, after a *lot* of research, I have found that Twilight was the culprit. For the reference:

Good morning every1,
I installed NeatRom on my i9100 and worked marvellous for months, now is a living hell! Not blaming the Rom itself but some kind of conflict between hardware and software.
Bug Description: screen strange behavior, in certain conditions won't turn on or will show strange colors, over illuminate or darken display, while at start up it will always work fine.
Trigger: locking the screen normailly causes to blackout but it will not turn on again on most tries, pushing the power buttom or the home buttom is equally uneffective most of the times. However, reseting the phone by removing the battery (since there's no display is the only way) will allow the phone to start normally: normal brightness, normal colors and normal operation everytime.
Fixes tried so far: I've reset the phone to factory, erase all cache, partition and delvik, and reduced the amount of apps to keep ram very low in usage. Also, I've removed the phone cover to check the screen connections, check the cable to see if its not broken and everything its fine. The display is not broken or otherwise damaged.
Opinion: since the display works fine at start up and would be working normally for as long as I don't lock it, I'm discarding all hardware problems of the screen itself; and I've removed all apps to avoid conflct of other software and it still has the same problem. Therefore, I think there's somekind of conflict between NeatRom and the screen (drivers maybe).
PLEASE HELP! :crying:

Hello,
XDA assist is for newbies finding their way around XDA Developers, it isn't a development section.
Please try posting the bug reports in the same thread you found the ROM in order to provide a helping hand to the developers.
-Vatsal
Judging from user complaints all over the various discussion forums, random spontaneous reboots are not a problem of particular types of Android phones. It is an Android problem. It occurs on many, perhaps all different Android phone types at least since Android 6. For example, it happens on Nexus, Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Samsung phones, as you can read here and elsewhere by searching for random reboot and spontaneous reboot.
It does not happen to everybody. It is possibly triggered by some Android setting, some core component like the radio, or by certain apps or certain settings in certain apps. It seems to be more prevalent on busy phones with many apps. We currently don't know for sure. Some reports said that the random reboots continued even directly after a factory reset (which would not be a viable solution anyway, even if it temporarily worked). It is likely that there is more than one cause. It certainly can be caused by pressing and holding the power button, possibly inadvertently in pockets or bags. It can be caused by mechanical shock in phones with removable batteries.
But the main cause is in the software, as I could prove in my case, by moving the entire software installation to another phone, which then exhibited the same random reboots. This was on a OnePlus One.
I am writing about the type of random reboot that only occurs while the phone is sleeping. There may be others.
But I can now report a complete success. I have been experimenting with preventing deep sleep. Since I keep the phone on a PARTIAL_WAKELOCK by means of one of the Wake Lock apps, the phone has never rebooted again on its own, not even once. Other users of entirely different phone types, like Nexus, have reported the same success. So at least in these cases the cause is closely related to deep sleep or perhaps to doze mode.
If you are affected, I urge you to try this. The hope is that a continuous partial wake lock solves the problem for most Android phones.
I use the app Wake Lock - PowerManager by darken. This app requires that I start the wake lock manually after each reboot, but since there are no more spontaneous reboots, this is easy enough. There is another, similar app, Wake Lock - CPU Awake by Innovemind, which can set the wake lock automatically after rebooting, but I have not tested it.
The downside is that the wake lock consumes some power. But on a busy phone it does not make much difference. I greatly prefer a phone that uses a little more power over one that reboots randomly.
There is now also some hope that Google can finally locate and repair this terrible defect, now that they know that it is related to deep sleep, assuming they are sufficiently interested in user reports to pick this up.
with stuff we got
Here are mines, mostly based on personnal/subjective stuff, but I spent quite some time digging this out for me so let's share.
Whats the best custom ROM LOLOLOL ?
AICP might be https://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-p2/development/7-1-1-aicp-12-1-n-7-1-1rxx-lenovo-p2-t3576216
Provided you want those extra shiny custom things built over Lineage.
This is to my knowledge the only custom ROM here receiving OTA updates (correct me if I'm wrong). Nightly updates.
RR feels more polished, but no updates since second release and issues updating Magisk. (Well some had, other didn't, I know I did).
On a side note RR can go MicroG way using those scripts for more privacy and battery related interests https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/microg-unofficial-installer-t3432360
Haven't tried with AICP yet.
This is a subject on his own, so tell me if you're interested. Otherwise go OpenGapps ARM64/7.1 http://opengapps.org/ (I suggest Pico then you install everything else you might need from google on the playstore).
Mandatory custom Rom stuff
1- No Volte.
2- No Volte, at least for a long long time.
3- Stop asking.
4- No fingerprint back button. 3rd party app might do the trick, but everyone should use the mighty copied but never surpassed pie https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150 ... And never need anything else again to control their phone.
4- If you experience idle battery drain reported as usb related by good monitor apps like Better Battery Stats, just remember to plug and unplug AC after each reboot. Not too tedious.
5- Use this mehod to get LED notification back https://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-p2/themes/lenovo-p2-rooted-custom-led-t3589859
-This got people confused: LED codes are to be entered in each Notification events, and it doens't matter if the main LED controller indicate it's grey, it wont be cause you're using the other one.
-Light Flow is acually awesome and doesn't drain any noticeable amount of juice contrary to what I red.
-If you want to get rid of the perma notif (works as well for LMT pie), don't use legacy version, just block the notification from android by longpressing on them. I will then work without trouble. Don't battery optimize it though.
6- Fast charge should works as expected, although not notified on lockscreen (but the timer will give you a hint).
7- "Battery life is not as good as it is on stock". I haven't made extensive tests being allergic to stock looks and lack of custom-ability, but I can tell you battery life on Aicp is STELLAR with a few tricks:
- battery optimize google play service. Oh yes ! It will works as usual.
Then choose carefully what apps absolutly needs to be left alone on that matter, they are few.
No need for greenify anything anymore unless you have some really "rogue" app (and in that case they should be disinstalled anyway).
- perma-run on data saving mode even in wifi (add your usual wifi at the bottom of the page).
You don't need anyone phoning home on your back anyway, only authorize the apps that absolutly can't do without internet.
Along those one are google contacts and agenda sync (not the apps themselves, another satellites ones). If you use google sync that is to say.
- Disable this 90% of your apps that don't need to run in background or at boot into the advanced mode of the privacy menu.
- Bonus round: manually sync everything including markets, disable all those apps that want to notify or check about things you don't care, get a nice black substratum theme like Flux, maybe make use of the suspend action function (incuded in Aicp and RR) that switch data and gps when screen is off.
Battery might even looks like it recharges itself now what a phone on that matter.
On the contrary speaking about where it falls short:
Sound sucks
Well, it's not that good, not Audiophile one bit. As a music addict I felt really bothered. Highly subjective matter, but after trying many many things I finally got my butt kicked trough my hear with this combination only: Ahrion Dolby https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/soundmod-axon-7-dolby-atmos-t3412342 + Ainur Audio https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/soundmod-ainur-audio-t3450516
Procedure to install them both was a bit tricky:
-distinstalling Dolby with provided .zip
-installing Sauron (disinstall/install as OP says)
-disinstall Audiomod in Magisk
-re-install Dolby. Wich re-installs Audiomod.
Then sonic bliss !
More to come.

Quick question what's micro g?
MicroG allows you to use Gapps without Playservices, thus gaining more control over your battery and privacy while having a still fully functionning phone.
Btw RR was updated 2 days back.
Thanks for all the detailed info.
On the subject of
Camera sucks
I'd very like to hear if someone has dug the most optimal app and settings for this phone.
I'm not really into photo and the few pic I've taken outside looks perfectly fine to my noob eyes.
But on a few occasion I like to storm photos on something and that's better be ok shots :good:
- perma-run on data saving mode even in wifi (add your usual wifi at the bottom of the page).
-You don't need anyone phoning home on your back anyway, only authorize the apps that absolutly can't do without internet.

Can't find suspended action
I'm not able to understand above mentioned things please explain a those if possible.
I'm in aicp latest build.
Sent from my Lenovo P2 using Tapatalk
Data save mode is an android feature found into the data consumption menu.
Suspend action is a custom rom feature found in the custom rom options of RR and AICP. RR has a tile for it, AICP doesn't.
This Custom Ron is great, way better than i expected.
