[Q] I can receive MMS, but can't send, when on Wifi - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi all,
My S3 is running Bonestock 3.4 (Android 4.1.2) and I've noticed that, if I am running on wifi (4G data is still on), I can receive MMS messages (e.g., group messages, pictures, videos are sometimes sketchy), but I cannot send any type of MMS message, whether it is a response to a group message or photos/videos. If I turn off wifi and re-send the message, it will go through fine.
FYI - I am using the stock Samsung messaging app, but I had the same issue w/ Hangouts.
It's my understanding that MMS requires mobile data. For what it's worth, when I am on wifi, my mobile data is still turned on. I was wondering if there is some sort of workaround for this, or if it will be necessary for me to disable wifi any time I want to send an MMS message.
As far as workarounds go (and as weird as this may sound), I would prefer not installing a 3rd party messaging app.
Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

sending text to email?

hi, i have a us cellular gs3 (no section for us cellular gs3) running aokp_dcusc_jb-mr2_milestone-2 and i'm having trouble sending texts to an email, i've never had this problem in the past with any phone or any other rom on this phone. what its doing is trying to send it as a mms instead of a text. i'm not sending a pic just a few words. i'm using the default message app "com.android.mms version 4.3.1-eng.sethyx.20131218.013055". i've tried other messaging apps and they're all doing the same thing. i'm on page plus and my data is in and out so i have my data turn off all the time, even still i've been able to sent texts to an email without data as a text not a sms. any help (besides suggesting to switch roms) would be greatly appreciated.

T-mobile, z3, group texts...

I just got the xperia z3 and am having an issue with group texting, i.e. mms group texts.
It seems as though the z3 will allow outgoing group texts, but incoming group texts come in as individual messages (not part of the conversation). This seems to be an issue with the native texting app. From what i have found online, that is the way the native texting app is. Really sucks for a $630 phone.
So Textra seems to be a good option to help with this. This app does seems to allow group mms messages in normal format. YEA! However, this seem to only work well over the cellular system. Tmobile seems to not allow MMS messages over WIFI. Textra has a specific T-mobile workaround that claims to turn off wifi when sending or receiving MMS messages. This seems to mostly work, however this has intermittently turned off my wifi, and also generates warnings that my calls won't work over wifi.
At work, my cell cell phone signal is poor, but wifi is good. I would like to be able to use wifi for calls as well as group messages.
Any suggestions?

In Textra settings what has worked for me the best is to select the option that says about T-mobile wifi calling fix, not the one that says that will disable the wifi temporarily. I have a d6603 (Unlocked) but it's the same way I have it on my T-Mobile Galaxy S5.
A lot of people at the iPhone forums are having this issue with T-Mobile...yes I have an iPhone don't judge...so yes I think this issue is more of a T-Mobile related issue then a z3 issue
The group mms is a Sony issue. The wifi calling/txting is the Tmobile issue. To get texts they modify the stock msg app, so if youre using another msg app you aren't going to get txt over wifi.

New Android Messenger App - Can't receive MMS

Hi there,
I recently got the new Android messenger app after upgrading my phone to L
I prefer it to hangouts, but I can't receive MMS.
The important thing is - if I use hangouts, I can receive them without issue on hangouts. So I don't think it's my APN settings that are the issue (I'm on Straight Talk)
Is anyone else having this problem?
Tried unchecking auto retrieve MMS, but it just freezes on 'downloading' and the MMS never shows up.
Thanks for any help you can offer

Ah right - I tried doing that but it didn't work. Thanks for the suggestions though.
I think part of the issue is Messaging has no options for MMS, whereas in Hangouts you can select a different APN.
I can't see any option for this in the messaging app.
I'm having the same issue. I've got android L on the lg g3
MMS works perfectly fine for me in the Messenger app. Both sending and recieving.
I'm also on straight talk and MMS worked fine in hangouts. Since installing messenger it won't receive. Just sits hanging on the downloading screen.
I would love to start using messenger as I feel it handles SMS just slightly better, but can't do without the MMS and group texting features. Will wait for update.
No problems here either, and I'm in an edge area.
I've encountered the same problem. Tried multiple ROMs to be sure; same problem existed. Messaging lets me receive them, but not Messenger. I have to change my default SMS app every time I want to download a MMS message. Sending MMS works, strangely enough.
Same here....when I receive a MMS , the app seems to freeze , I can't send any sms during the "downloading" time
Doesn't work
I always hated Hangouts so i downloaded SMS app now i tried downloading messenger and it will not download MMS messages. I am on Straight Talk and have a Nexus 5.
Thanks
Pic shows my issue and when i hit "Tap" it said download but will not. HELP!!!!!
What I did (I found this somewhere online), go and delete all the APN settings except the one you use. Reboot and viola. MMS on AT&T Straight Talk worked for me in Google Messenger!

MMS problems

Hi folks !
I have a problem sending and receiving MMS in Android Lollipop. On KitKat, everything was ok. Now, on Android Lollipop, I can't send or recieve MMS. I had Blisspop ROM and Temasek's ROM for OnePlus One installed and no go. I configured my APN' manually from my current providers configuration and still nothing. But what I did manage to find out is that if I put on APN Type: Internet instead of default, my MMS goes through and I can receive MMS. But when I leave it like this, I don't have internet. When I change the APN type to default, I have internet, but cannot send MMS. Any ideas on what is going on ? I am using the same configurations as I did in KitKat, so I am clueless. Any help ? Ideas ? Advice ?
You need data on to send/receive mms.
Hi !
Same bug here ! I've tried before cm 12 nightlies and see this issue. Reverted back to 4.4.4 and all was fine. Now with the cm12s ota, this issue is back. When i send and mms (ie photo with some text), it says "sending" and when i receive, i see a blank message notification (with smitten sms). I've tried many apps and issue remain (hangouts, default sms, go sms pro, smitten). For received mms, restarting the phone seems to "unlock" the reception.

[Q] MMS & other questions

Greetings,
My son has a Nexus 5 that I recently rooted for him. He is running the stock 6.0 rom. He is having times when he can not receive MMS messages. It will just sit there downloading. This was a problem before he was rooted. I had him try messenger instead of hangouts & that worked for a while but started again yesterday. After I rebooted, it seemed to work for now. Any thoughts? He also has a similar problem downloading torrents. Sometimes it works & sometimes nothing will work. Would going to a different rom help? Maybe Pure Nexus or CM13. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The obvious thing would be the settings. Have you checked the MMS settings with your carrier's website? And (unless I'm badly mistaken) MMS works on data (in the UK at least), so it needs to be switched on to allow the phone to receive MMS messages.
Or do you mean that it's intermittent ("He is having times when he can not receive MMS messages"), in which case it may just be the signal?

I checked the setting to make sure he can receive MMS. Also, data is on & working. As far as the signal strength, if it was low would not all SMS & MMS not be received?
Pat
Pat, I'm an end-user as I guess you are, so I can't talk sensibly about the technicalities. I do know from experience that SMS and MMS are separate functions - you can receive SMSs any time that you have a signal, but if your MMS settings aren't perfectly configured you don't get the messages. On a number of occasions I've had a pop-up saying "You have an MMS message" but it wasn't downloaded until I specifically enabled data (even though wifi was already enabled).
Actually, that last sentence raises a question in my own head. If both wifi and data are on, Android will prefer wifi - I wonder if it actually disables data, or would an MMS still arrive even though wifi is overriding data? Maybe somebody who knows what they're talking about can help us both...
You didn't answer my question about whether it's intermittent. Has the phone ever received MMS? If so, when did it stop? If it has never received them, I would really double-check your carrier website and look particularly for different advice - my own UK provider's forum has a number of pages, and there are several different MMS configurations, all of them claiming to be the definitive settings...
