No signal at all - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 4 day old Nexus 5, not had any problems until 2 hours ago, the phone has dropped all signal on Three (UK, Leeds), thought it might be my local mast, I've just arrived at work, 5 miles away and it's still the same, no one else I know on Three is having the same issue in these areas.
I've restarted my phone around 10 times now, I've taken the SIM out a few times, the phone doesn't even moan that the SIM has been taken out or put back in which seems odd. I cannot manually select a network as when I search I get this message: "Error while searching for networks"
can anyone offer advise?
this is a replacement N5 from Google, my 10 month old one went back on Friday. I've been away all weekend and not had a single problem with the signal until 10 minutes after arriving back home
stock ROM, rooted, 4.4.4

not sure I understand the question?
I don't know anyone else with an N5 and I stated no one else I know on Three near home or work has this issue.

Looks like you'll need another replacement. If it's that new, I wouldn't bother worrying about it.

I'm having issues with 3 UK signal in 3 different areas albeit they are all 10 minutes drive from each other.

No signal - Reflashed 3 times

Today my phone has been switching from no signal to signal
and now it refuses to get any signal
i have tried changing the radio
reflashed stock rom
then reflashed a modded rom
and each one has the same result ...
any other ideas what could be wrong?
i get signal if i put the sim in another phone
so its definately phone related
make sure the radio matches the rilphone.dll?
yep
same .dll from the radio package
have a feeling its some internal problem
cuz the sim is fine otherwise
grr
What about Edge?
I had a LOT of frustrations with mine a couple of weeks ago, then, just to play a hunch, I disabled 3G, and went back to edge and it worked perfectly. Sent an email to the deathstar, and they sent back saying they were having 3G problems. Reading over on boygeniusreport.com, a LOT of people are having trouble with 3G. At&t doesn't have the bandwith to support all the apple iPhone fanboys I guess.
Probably not what's causing your issue, but might be worth a try...save you from pulling your hair out.

If this doesn't help, disabling 3G, you may have to do a warranty exchange.
left battery out all night (last night)
then i reconneced it this morning
and everything seems to working fine
must have been some internal static

Infuse does not connect to the data network

My infuse does not connect / detect ATT's data network since yesterday. It was working fine till day before yesterday on my way home. Once i reached home I switched to my home wireless. Then yesterday morning when i left for work my phone did not connect to the data network. I no see the HSPA / data network icon on the bar at the top. I called ATT this morning and they could not figure out any problem. They said they have opened a ticket and will get back to me by tomorrow. Wanted to see if anyone else has the same problem? Should i try a factory reset? If so can someone tell me a safe way to do it so that i do not loose any data from my phone? I am currently not rooted and have only installed apps from the android marketplace and I did install the upgrade from ATT that has been pushed out since last week. Thank you for reading my post.
I have data issues with the Infuse as well. At&t had me get new sim cards, factory reset and finally switch the phone....on my second Infuse, same issue. At&t told me it might be a bad batch of phones because the network is fine and there doesn't seem to be any known issues with the Infuse phones.
My data issues occur randomly. It shows me having 3-5 bars, but the browser won't load any sites and some apps give me network connection errors.
thanks for the reply lost2030. I did a factory reset on my phone and the data network is working atleast as of now, will have to wait and watch. Also I just have a feeling my GPS may be working better too..but too early to say i guess.

The GPS on my second Infuse is not as great as my previous and I've had 2 random freezes that only get fixed by removing the battery I'm just gonna return this phone before my 30 days and probably get it again in the future.

if the phone freezes hold the 3 button combo for 5-10 seconds. it should reset.
I cant connect to the att servers as well. it says im up to date and to check in 24 hours and 24 minutes. (still not updated). the power button on my phone sometimes feels sticky when i press it in which kinda feels annoying. would this be worth the 60$ exchange fee?
FYI ATT is doing a major systems upgrade June 8-12 so there may be regional data outages, call, and SMS issues during this time.

Cool. Just curious.
cipher20, I too had the missing "H" data symbol a couple days ago. I called customer service, and she had me power down my phone. After a minute, she said power it back up and there it was. i asked her what she did and all she said was "magic". i know i'm a complete noob, but, really ?!?!? anyways, it's back, and i did NOT pull the battery, factory reset or 3 button combo. sorry, not very helpful but that's what happened to me. oh, and i have not been able to connect to at&ts servers for that little software upgrade thats been out for a week. ever. not once.

Thanks for the info SkySoldier. I had tried some similar rebooting etc before calling them and it did not work. Then I was with the tech support over the phone for about 1 hour and they too tried several things but nothing worked, asked me to remove the battery and sim card while they try to flush the network, they also reregistered my data plan but it did not work and they just opened a ticket for it. So i finally decided to do a reset. I am glad it works now.
For the ATT update i had received an error the first time round but the second time i tried (the next day) it connected and I was able to update. This was last saturday.
BTW i was supposed to receive a call back by now from ATT regarding a resolution for this but have not yet heard back.

Yesterday on the phone the tech support person told me since I am the only 1 yet with this problem in my area they will not consider it a data outage issue but an isolated issue. If they receive more complains from my region they will consider it a data outage issue. So seems there is a disconnect among the ATT staff

So frustrated, about to return One X but seeking advice

All,
I have had the One X for just over a week now. Three times, I have had to hard reset the phone because it stops receiving / making calls, and data stops.
I tried searching the forums but it seems like issues are all over the board and couldn't really find something that was exactly my issue. If there is one, I apologize for the duplicate post.
Regardless, when the phone is in this state, it appears like everything is working. It shows I have great signal, the little 4G icon is there, indicating that everything is working.
Anyone else have this problem or could I possibly just have a bad unit? AT&T already swapped out the SIM card thinking that might fix it, but no luck.

I think you should swap out the phone as bad before returning it if that's the only issue you're having. mine seems flawless in that regard. I haven't missed or dropped a single call.

I don't recall ever having that problem. Mine was pretty random too, in fact it got so bad yesterday that I missed several important calls.
If I would restart the phone, I would get all my missed text messages and the voicemail (google voice) would tell me I have messages waiting..
Very frustrating.

My X started out ok, but these last couple of days I have NO signal anywhere. Also SMS/MMS is barely working. (and when it does, people are getting multiples) And its dropping pretty much every single call.
I just called my corp store, they have plenty in stock. I'm going to go exchange it. Should I ask for a new SIM also?
And my screen is perfect, here's hoping I get another good one...

However, AT&T's LTE phones are notorious for connection problems on non-LTE market. These LTE phones use a new APN called pta. I just had the same problem while traveling through PA yesterday. Lost data connections many times and had to reboot the phone at the end of the day to regain data connection of any kind.
So, it is AT&T's service and also the phone firmware that can't properly handle the fact that it can't receive any LTE signal in certain areas.

return it and get another phone, besides the One X, it's all hype anyway. The HTC vivid is a much more solid phone.
I had almost the same issue. My device was on wifi and would at random times just stop pulling data. Or at time just not make calls. I tried trouble shooting it but I was basically told since I didn't have it long I should get it replaced. I replaced it and the new device is perfect. I have not once had that issue again.

Who said I'm going to reture it. OneX, regardless all its problems is still way better than any alternatives AT&T have. There is no such thing as problem free Android phones. I've being many of them. They all have problems one way or another. Vivid with its ancient S3 CPU and SD screen just plain sucked. My SGS2 can kick its butt.
For me the form factor of One X, LTE speed, S4 processor and HD screen are the main things I pick One X over any other phones available on AT&T. These software bugs will be corrected overtime.
I just came back from my store. They had plenty in stock but said when that runs out, they have no idea when they will see anymore.
I have a brand new 1X, and a new SIM card. Hopefully this one works.
I stopped by a vzw store to look at the gnex and my hox side by side. I've decided to keep the HOX. Screen on the gnex was way too bright and I ran quadrant side by side on both phones. The hox blew the gnex out of the water.

Bought mine yesterday and this same issue happened to me today. Had full reception on 4G but could not send a text or place a call. Happened twice today, and I dont know if I want to return it ASAP or if its software related and may be fixed.
I had that problem 3 days after buying the phone. Data, calls, texts..tons of problems. Phone was unusable half the time. I went and exchanged it for another one. I am now at 6 days with the new phone. No problems. I hope it lasts.

potential signal problem

Hey everyone, i'm a new coming from the OG razr and while i heard the radio on the s3 isn't as good as the razr i think my phone might have a problem. It seems to get stuck on 1x a lot and the only way to get back to 4g is to restart the phone. my phone is rooted but stock rom. Is this a common problem? Also under under APN LTE verizon internet is checked not EHRPD. Is this correct?

Yeah it's true, put simply. You can see if it's the sim. But like I said, if you try to get a replacement after your return period, then you'll just get a refurb. So be quick on the draw if the sim card doesn't fix it.

S3s are known to have a number of data issues. Call technical support and try their ideas. When you can rule everything else out, then you know it's your phone. Basically, if a new sim or a factory reset doesn't fix it, you need a new phone.

I took my phone in the store yesterday and they told me flat out that I sim card won't do anything for your signal. I'm not discounting what you're saying, just telling you guys what they told me.
My signal is garbage at home AND at work. I use wifi at home to play with the phone but actual 3G signal is bad. I am lucky to get 2 bars but its generally 1 with speed tests of about 80kbps.
I don't have WIFI at work, and get no signal at all.
I still have a week to return the phone but I'd like to keep it if I can get a better signal.
I am still within my 14 day, maybe 5 days left

Are you new to VZW or have all of your phones had the same problem?
With the thought of you possibly leaving VZW, you would think the store would have tried a new sim card, if only to pacify you. Or they might have offered to switch out the device.

I have been with Verizon for years. My Droid X didn't have the best signal but it was much better than this.
One problem is, the store is located in a 4G area, it works great there but it doesn't where I live, nor where I work (which is a decent sized city)
It sounds like you have a bad phone. I'd be pushing for a new one before your worry-free period is up.
Okay, I reset my phone this morning and surprisingly, the signal is much better.
I went from 80-100kbps to about 500-600 kbps. Does that even make sense? The phone is only a week old
Now, perhaps I'm getting too hopeful here and the wind is blowing the right way today or something.
Yesterday I checked my signal with 'Open Signal' (I'd love to know of a good tower location app), and my signal was about 20-23%, right now its at 32-37%. I know that isn't a great jump but in the scheme of things, it is. I'm also at -97dBm, I think yesterday and the day before was over 100
I will note however that I'm still at 2 bars of 3G
I think its just chance , but I'll keep an eye on it.
Couple of weeks ago I also contacted VZW about bad signal/slow data speeds with my phone. They also told me a SIM would be the first fix to try. I had them send me one, for free 2nd day.
Before I swapped it out.. I rebooted my phone and put it in a certain spot and observed signal strength. In my house it ranges from -109 to -113. The data speeds, when the test would even finish, were abysmal. Ran 3 tests and in general they were about 500Kb/s down and anywhere from 0 to 300Kb/s Up. And that was on LTE!
Now without wiping my phone or anything I installed the new SIM and called VZW to activate as their website was bombing. Finally got the thing activated then put my phone back in the same exact spot to observe any changes. While signal strength did not get any better my data speeds increased a whole lot! In the same spot I was getting 5 Mb/s Down and 3 Mb/s Up on average.
Ive also noticed a decrease in LTE drops to 3G and 1X like I was getting before.
So while Ill say that it would seem to be impossible for a SIM to make your signal better, it just may help with your connection.
Thanks for that, I'm going to go up there in awhile and at least swap the card
Well this is my side of the story I had the Galaxy Nexus before sometimes in New York I am in spots where I dont have 4G what is weaird when I go into someones house which i've been many times I only get 3G and then when I go outside I get LTE anyways at the same spot I get 1-2 3G bars and my friend gets 3 bars on iPhone 4S but when doing speed test on both it seems about the same.
Also I am running CM10 and when I was on stock I could tell the signal was a little bit better , you guys think it would be worth a try to swap out sim card as well? how do I make them give me a swap for free?

Nexus 5 - Dropping network

My S3 died last week so I purchased a Nexus 5 and I've had nothing but issues with it since.
In 6 days it has dropped network about 10 times and just displays 'Emergency calls only' until I reboot it. It seems to be completely random.
Twice it has done it whilst streaming over 4g from YouTube, but it has also just done it whilst dormant overnight. I woke up the other day to find 'Emergency Calls Only' despite it being fine when I went to sleep.
After searching google I can now see that this seems to be a common issue with Nexus 5.
I'm seriously considering taking it back and getting something else, although I'd love to keep it if it works properly. Does anyone know the cause of the issue or have any workarounds? As I use the phone for out of hours calls for work, I can't afford to have it drop network whilst in my pocket and me not know about it...

I'm seriously considering taking it back and getting something else, although I'd love to keep it if it works properly. Does anyone know the cause of the issue or have any workarounds? As I use the phone for out of hours calls for work, I can't afford to have it drop network whilst in my pocket and me not know about it...

Update radio or android, try different radios or reinsert sim. The network drop issue has been fix in 4.4.3

Do I have to root to try different radios? Android was updated when I got the phone and it's now on 4.4.4

You have to unlock the bootloader to try different radio's. There is a thread about it in the general section. Try to reinsert the sim first. It fixed it for me when I had the issue

OK I'll try the sim first before unlocking bootloader. Thanks

OK so I tried re-inserting the sim but still dropping network. The weird thing is that it has done 3 times in the exact same location on my way to work whilst I've been streaming. It's as if it loses 4g signal in that location but then fails to switch to 3g and instead I get left with no network connection / no bars (empty triangle). It then fails to pick up the network again until I reboot (tried re-registering on network and airplane mode on/off).

OK so re-inserted sim and spoke to O2 who said settings are ok. However, it did it again this morning in the same location. That's 12 times in 8 days I've had the phone, 4 of those in the same location (give or take 100m).
I think I'll take the phone back before unlocking bootloader and trying a new radio, but any other suggestions before I do that ? Factory reset ?

You have drops in the same location? Is that only with the N5 or with other phones too?

I never had it with my S3 in 2 years, using the same route into work every day. I can't remember my S3 ever dropping network once....or if it did it picked up the network again automatically. Only difference was I wasn't on LTE with that.
It's not just that location though, it's happened 8 other times in other place nowhere near. I only made note of the same location because it's where I get off the tram coming into work. This morning I wasn't streaming or anything, it was just in my pocket, but I'd installed light flow to audibly alert me when it lost connection.

Maybe set it to 3g instead of LTE, or else RMA/send the device

Yeah I've seen suggestions about changing to 3g, but that defeats the object of me having an LTE phone and paying for 4g service. Thanks, I think I'll take the phone back. My mate has an N5 and although he said he'd experienced it in the past, he hasn't since being on 4.4.3 / 4.4.4

OK so I've been and swapped my N5 for a new one...they also gave me a new sim. Fingers crossed !!
I guess I am too late to add anything but anyway here is what I did and may be of help. After pulling out the sim, use a pencil eraser and rub it across the contacts on the sim card. If the contacts somehow get too much oil residue from finger tips or other "impurities" on the contact, you will get incomplete contacting sometimes and it works other times. The eraser will clean those contacts up for a better dirt free connection. When I was a electronics tech in the hi tech field, I fixed many issues that were just contact problems and the eraser did the trick. I have had this same problem on my other phones (blackberries and androids) and it seemed to work.

Thanks. Either the new phone or the new sim seem to have fixed the issue. I've not had a network disconnect since (been 5 days now).
