Surface pro 2 and external battery compatibility - Microsoft Surface

Hi
I´ve just bought a surface pro 2 128 gb.
I have a doubt, is it possible to charge it with an external battery ?
i have this one
http://www.amazon.es/10000mAh-Dual-Salida-Thunderbolt-Incredible-Adaptador/dp/B0067TQQI8
would it be possible to charge the surface pro through the usb (very useful if you are on a long trip).
Thankyou

No, it doesn't charge via USB, not any more than your laptop does.
If you want an external battery for it, you can get the Power Cover from Microsoft. There may be third-party accessories that also work, but I'm not aware of any.

[Q] First Tablet! :D

Can I use a memory card to extend the memory? and can I have a one in the tablet and one in the dock? 32+32+16(tablet)?
When using the dock,it drains the dock battery first, then the tablet itself?
Is there a headphone jack on the dock?
Are there any homescreen replacements?
1. Expand the capacity not the memory.
2 It's suppose to do that.
3. No
4. ADWLauncher EX, Launcher Pro
Hope this helps.

Yeah,memory capacity
Thanks. Is this a good tablet to start with?
Been wanting the iPad 2 for a while but it lacks features. Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Sony's Tablet S were also on my list then the Eee Pad Transformer caught my eye.
Dock (16 hours) and memory card expansion are SOOO GOOOD features I like. Is the new EeePad slider a successor to this? (in terms of performance)? I want this tablet to be future proof and last a while until I get a new one.
To elaborate a little:
Yes, you can have a microsd card in the tablet, a standard sd card in the dock and even plug in flash drives or hard drives to the usb ports on the dock.
I don't actually have the dock so I'm not too sure but I believe it drains the dock battery first and the dock battery actually charges the tablet. It has something like 16 hours of battery life with the dock.
The dock doesn't have a headphone jack but the tablet has one on the side so docked or not, you can get to the headphone jack.
I haven't used any homescreen replacements in honeycomb, but I keep reading the ones for phones work (launcher pro, adw, etc).
It's an excellent tablet to start with, not just for the price but for the fact that you can convert it into a netbook by adding the dock. In turn you get 2 USB ports and a full size SD card reader that will give you even more capacity and of course an extra battery which will give you a total of 16 hours of normal usage.
I started with the Viewsonic g-Tablet and the very first thing I did was to root it and throw a custom ROM on it which I went from Froyo 2.2 to Honeycomb 3.1.
The Eee Transformer caught my eye because it had HC 3.1 natively and I had to have it. I looked at the Galaxy 10.1 and it's slim design and it would have been my primary choice if it had the capability for capacity expandability. It also had a $500 price tag instead of a $400 like the TF.
I didn't really give the Sony or the Slider a look because I was already sold on the TF so maybe someone else can elaborate on those tablets pros and cons.
By the way, congrats on your new TF. I'm sure you'll have hours of enjoyment with it.
Thanks for the response,appreciate it
No problem, glad I could help out a fellow TF user.

1.Yes, the dock also has 2 usb ports, which makes it easier to transfer files or for the extra storage space.
2. Yes it does, and if the tablet is 50% battery then decide to use the dock, and battery power in the dock is transferred to the tablet in case you want to undock it.
So what's the max memory I can with the tablet itself, AND with the dock

I have THIS 32gb MicroSDHC inserted into my tablet and THIS 128gb SDXC card inserted into my dock. I also plug THIS SSD in THIS external enclosure with a whole ton of movies and media loaded on it and it's simple as pie to just switch back and forth between my desktop, laptop and tablet anytime I want.
That's a total of 280gb in external media jacked into this thing, so you get the idea of the possibilities. Incidentally, USB 3.0 is backward compatible to USB 2.0 in case you were questioning the interface of the SSD.

Will this get Ice Cream Sandwich?
We are kind assuming (and massively hoping) that it will get ICS. Honestly though, I'm thinking that if ICS was released, there would be some devs who would make a custom rom with it if Asus decides to screw us over..

[Q] USB Adapter to work with ext hd

Hi,
I was curious if anyone got an ext hd to work with the usb adapter?
Everytime i plug it in, it tells me a "high powered ext hd" is connected but unable to read..i know it was made for usb sticks and keyboards etc but has anyone gotten ext hd to work?
Thanks!

I found my 1Tb Hitachi Touro was detected to start with but the power was insufficient to leave it on. It was not working after a few seconds of being plugged in. Memory sticks are no problem but the HDD sucked more power than the 10.1 wants to give...
Shame that an awesome tablet that runs rings around just about everything else falls short of my Acer Icona A501 for this...:crying:
I used a 1A externa battery to power an HDD and it worked just fine on the Note. The HDD was NTFS, but I used USB Mass Storage Watcher and mounted the partitions.
To get it ti power on you need a split USB/ power cable.
Yeah, my Acer A700 has this ability but unfortunately the Samsung Note doesn't have the power.
The fix is to buy a self-powered USB hub... Or use high capacity thumb drives.
Or use a hard drive with provisions for external power.
I plugged my ext powered hd but still no luck. Oh wells! Or maybe split line usb and ac like someone recommended
Thanks guys!

Split USB is your best bet. No hub needed, just an external source of power like a portable battery.
Yeah, but it bites my kickass up-to-date sammy tablet is put in its place by my 18 month old Acer Iconia A501 that supports the 1Tb 2.5" HDD with no problem.
I think this bites a bit. Makes life hard If I need more storage than most thumb drives supply...
No how am I supposed to take a veritable video store with me to watch....
If you could run an external hd via USB it would drain the battery pretty quickly.
Nope, get at least 6 hours of watching videos from the 1Tb hdd on the acer Iconia A501... The battery is not as beefy as the SGnote 10.1's either...
Just an oversite by samsung...
Just a pain now having to carry 2 tablets around...

It won't because the Note will not provide power to the HDD, you have to use external power.

OTG Volatges or Amps for HDD

hi everyone
I was wondering if anyone knows how to increase the voltages or amps for OTG to make power HDD successfully
I have 1TB and 2TB HDD
both are working with my Note 3 N9005 and Note Edge N915S without extra power
but for my Note Pro P905 they both need external power
the Note Pro does not provide enough power for them
so
I want to know if there are files that need to be edited to increase the power supplied for the HDD through OTG cable or do I need a custom kernel
thanks
That's odd. It reads my three 2TB WD Elements drives without issue... Even two of them at the same time over a hub works without issue.

Over a hub with external power right?
It works with external power
But try connecting one of them directly without power
It will not work

No, just a regular USB hub without external power. This one: http://www.saturn.de/mcs/product/_ISY-IHU-1000-4-Port-Hub,48352,278643.html?langId=-3
But I do believe it depends on the drive itself. I have an Iomega 500Gb drive that won't load without external power, while my 2TB Western Digitals do.

Which variant of the note pro do you have? Is it the P905?
If it is p905, then which rom are you using?
What cable do you use to connect the hub to the tab?
And which models are your 2tb hard drives?
Because i have wd passport 1tb and elements 2tb

P905, P905XXUANC3/P905DBTANC3, pure stock. (Yes, still on KitKat.)
USB Cable is the official Samsung ET-R205UBEG OTG cable.
The two drives are both WD Elements USB 3.0 2TB. Both formatted as EXFAT.
I had a WD Passport once, but it had problems with my old TF700T due to the backup partition and the autorun.

Bah, I'd really hoped that would work...
I have a portable powerpack, a 15600mAh Asolar Xstorm. It's just not very convenient to have to juggle a 12" tablet, portable harddrive hanging from an OTG cable, as well as a powerpack the size of a 6" phone, alongside my already 5.7" phone, whilst switching trains and standing in crowded carriages.

The only drive I have with me right now is formatted in NTFS. (Because the piece of crap Windows XP Dell PC I have to use here is too old to recognize EXFAT, and FAT32 doesn't support 5GB Photoshop files.) All it does is give an Unsupported file system error. (Which makes sense, as I haven't rooted)
Edit: Okay, borrowing a drive from a friend to check, this is a 1TB WD Elements in EXFAT...
Edit 2: That somehow won't load. Device just says it's blank or unsupported. I'm confused, why isn't this one working?

Can you try with your hard drives and make a video?
I can't make a test because my portable drives are all formatted ext 4 or ntfs, but I'd check the portabla case itself: many portable cases show strange incompatibilities: a different chipset and/or usb chip can be the culprit. Unfortunately the only way to check this is to open the case. WD may have changed something in the hardware or the firmware, if any, over the time and this could explain why some drives work and some not.
My suggestion is to check the compatibility prior to buy a portable drive.
It is not the hard disk itself

Not the hard disk but its case. It is the combination of case and taget device that makes the difference. Some of my devices do not work if attached to my modem but do work attached to to my laptop or desktop pc, others do the opposite. The only case I found to be compatible with all my devices is a thermaltake one, that I bought because it was listed in the compatibility list of my desktop's motherboard.

my hdd also requires a battery pack to function over otg. its a 500gb usb3 toshiba. i went round and round with this for months and could never solve the problem. mine is the verizon unit, and i think that has something to do with it as any other non-verizon note pro sees the hdd with no problem, no power pack needed. (even works fine with tab pro wifi model and galaxy s4, s5, and s6). didn't matter how i formatted the drive, it still wouldn't see it without the power pack.
quite frustrating.

This will depend mainly from the Hdd that's inside the case.
I personally assemble my portable hdd's buyn a case and a low power hdd (Wd green or so on). It's very simple and you know what you have. Doing this way I never had power problems even with usb2 sokets.
Keep in mind that an usb3 Soket is rated at up to 1 Amp, while an USB2 socket is rated at max 0.5 Amp. I don't believe that any portable 2.5" HD will absorb all that power , but I would not be surprised if on a tablet the available current was much less, to limit the maximum discharge rate of the battery with consequent risks of dangerous overheatings.
In any case I guess that on the Market there are cheap usb gadgets able to measure the absorbed current from an USB socket. Ebay or Aliexpress can be good sources for such gadgets.

I've posted this problem on other thread too but the question is related to this thread too, hence I'll ask.
My smartphone (an Asus device) is able to power up HDD (2tb Seagate Slim BUP) by itself and can read and write files too(I use Total Commander app along with a 3rd party plugin to read and write to NTFS drive.) Problem is my smartphone's battery drops 1% every 1.5 mins when HDD is connected to it directly.
So I want external HDD to draw power from external supply ONLY (from powerbank or 2A charger) and not smartphone. Ofcourse phone will use some power but primarily HDD should use external supply power.
Is it possible to do this ? If yes, which hub or cable should I use ?
I had bought a OTG Y cable but on connecting micro usb end of cable to smartphone, phone started charging itself and HDD turned off. I tried both 5V 2A charger and powerbank with same output.
Is there such thing as a hub or OTG Y cable won't use external power if smartphone is capable supplying required power? Or the cable was faulty? I'm new to all this so could you tell what went wrong ?

I don't see why it won't work. Be cautious though for a battery drain, since the monitor uses USB-C for its power as well, instead of using (having) its own battery.
I'd recommend for you to get a HP Elite x3 Lap Dock instead if you meant to bring it out for "portability" (15.6 inch is not portable for me at all) if you plan to mainly using it with your phone. Just think of using your N9 as a bonus of getting it work with a laptop.

The MB16AP has its own battery. The big question is when will it become available.
Yea, the screen has it's own battery. I know Dex works using USB C to HDMI, but I'm not sure if USB C to USB C will work with the Zenscreen or not.
I have considered the HP Lapdock but without the phone it is just deadweight. At least the Zenscreen can serve as a second display for my laptop so I'll be getting more utility out of it.

Regarding HP Lapdock, it is not. If you're using Note 9 with it, your phone will still functions as usual. The deadweight happens if you're using older DeX phone that doesn't support dual screen DeX.

Asus is coming out with a touch version of the MB16AP, but I've searched high and low for the model number and came up with nothing, and who knows when it will come out. In the meantime I ordered the MB16AP on ebay which is the non-touch version with the battery and it should arrive next week. According to the Asus website, it should be compatible with any android phone (version 5.0 or above) and most laptops with Displaylink drivers. So I assume it will work with the Note 9 in Dex mode.

Wow i'm sure glad I saw this.... been looking for something like that HP Lapdock. I got the Sentio Superbook and after a year and a half it was quite a let-down. Tech just changes so fast and the user experience was not good. Played around with Dex and it works well for my needs.
Well that external monitor (MB16AP) came in this past week and I've been testing it with the Note 9. First of all, she is a beauty. Works with the Note 9 and DeX without any issues. On the Note 8, I had blackouts and all sorts of issues using either a hdmi or vga monitor. Since then I've upgraded to the Note 9 and the same issues appear but less so. It was somewhat manageable. I figure it may have been the monitors and not the Notes. But when I hooked up the Note 9 to the Zenscreen MB16AP, wow what a difference. Smooth as butter.
The only issue I've encountered is since the Note 9 and the Zenscreen use a single USB-C cable, there is no way to use any usb or usb dongle wireless mouse and keyboard. You are either forced to use the built in Note 9 keyboard and use the touch screen as the mouse. The monitor finally showed up on Amazon and its about $50 more than on ebay due to the shipping. But at least Amazon has a way better return policy that the two outfits on ebay that are selling the model.
I did a somewhat review of the monitor on Amazon.
edit: forgot the pics

I was about to get a zenscreen go, before I got an HP X3 Lapdock. I'm rly glad I got it instead, cause I was gonna get the Zenscreen, and a BT keyboard and mouse to mimick a lapdock like miracast.
No need for that nonsense now. If anyone gets an HP lapdock, the only combo I've seen work consistently is the Snapdragon Note 9 + The american Lapdock model which starts with a V. All the other models have various things that don't work. They start with a Y. I'd also avoid getting a refurbished one, as it's not known is they used parts from other models that are not compatible with the Note 9. Just get it new on amazon or ebay. new.
I got the HP Lapdock and boy so glad I did. For my needs it's perfect. Everything works great and the battery lasts a long time.... I ran it over 7 hours yesterday to test. The only thing that doesn't work is left and right clicking on the touchpad do nothing. You have to use gestures.... but I use a mouse anyway.....
Seriously Samsung needs to make their own lapdock for dex.....

Just get it new on amazon or ebay. new.

I have an Asus MB16AC that I use with my laptop. I tried it the other day, but the monitor would only power on for 1-2 seconds. This evening, I charged the phone to 100% and tried again.
Using the USB-C to USB-C cable to the Note 9, screen mirroring works great, but only lasts for a short time. Playing video makes the monitor power off even faster. Definitely a problem powering the display from the phone.
Switching to Dex mode makes everything go black. I assume that Dex mode takes more power.
I'll order a powered USB3 hub and try again. I can't seem to find a USB-C hub that has USB-C ports, except for one that does PD (Power Delivery).

Have you found a solution for the power? Wouldn't charging the phone with Qi help or USB-C PD is needed? I have not found any adapter allowing out on phone, and in by another USB-C that would send power.

Yes I can place the phone on a wireless charger while using the USB-C cable to send the DEX display to the monitor. But it seems the monitor is taking up more juice than it gets. Thus depleting the battery eventually. You would think that if the Note 9 is supplying the power to the monitor that the monitor would not use the internal battery but it seems that it does. Then if the internal battery goes down to 0, it will not allow Dex to display until the internal battery has at least 5% juice. It baffles me why Asus did not include a splitter of some sort or have the device have another USB-C port for charging.
btw that USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 cable by NekTeck is a suitable replacement for the OEM Asus USB-C cable.
