OTG Volatges or Amps for HDD - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi everyone
I was wondering if anyone knows how to increase the voltages or amps for OTG to make power HDD successfully
I have 1TB and 2TB HDD
both are working with my Note 3 N9005 and Note Edge N915S without extra power
but for my Note Pro P905 they both need external power
the Note Pro does not provide enough power for them
so
I want to know if there are files that need to be edited to increase the power supplied for the HDD through OTG cable or do I need a custom kernel
thanks

That's odd. It reads my three 2TB WD Elements drives without issue... Even two of them at the same time over a hub works without issue.

Over a hub with external power right?
It works with external power
But try connecting one of them directly without power
It will not work
The hard drives works with My note 3 and note edge without the need for external power

No, just a regular USB hub without external power. This one: http://www.saturn.de/mcs/product/_ISY-IHU-1000-4-Port-Hub,48352,278643.html?langId=-3
But I do believe it depends on the drive itself. I have an Iomega 500Gb drive that won't load without external power, while my 2TB Western Digitals do.

Which variant of the note pro do you have? Is it the P905?
If it is p905, then which rom are you using?
What cable do you use to connect the hub to the tab?
And which models are your 2tb hard drives?
Because i have wd passport 1tb and elements 2tb
Both are not working with tab but working with the phones

P905, P905XXUANC3/P905DBTANC3, pure stock. (Yes, still on KitKat.)
USB Cable is the official Samsung ET-R205UBEG OTG cable.
The two drives are both WD Elements USB 3.0 2TB. Both formatted as EXFAT.
I had a WD Passport once, but it had problems with my old TF700T due to the backup partition and the autorun.

Nope. No power to be found on a train or in the garden, sadly.

Buy a portable charger
Gonna try to get it back to kitkat and test it
Or see the difference in kitkat kernel vs lollipop kernel
update:
got back to KitKat (P905XXUANC3)
and it does not work without power also and I lost the LTE connection :crying:
flash drives are working fine
only problem is with the 1 tb and 2 tb hard drive
(I don't have a smaller hard drives to test for now)
going back to lollipop and gonna try to find a solution

Bah, I'd really hoped that would work...
I have a portable powerpack, a 15600mAh Asolar Xstorm. It's just not very convenient to have to juggle a 12" tablet, portable harddrive hanging from an OTG cable, as well as a powerpack the size of a 6" phone, alongside my already 5.7" phone, whilst switching trains and standing in crowded carriages.

The only drive I have with me right now is formatted in NTFS. (Because the piece of crap Windows XP Dell PC I have to use here is too old to recognize EXFAT, and FAT32 doesn't support 5GB Photoshop files.) All it does is give an Unsupported file system error. (Which makes sense, as I haven't rooted)
Edit: Okay, borrowing a drive from a friend to check, this is a 1TB WD Elements in EXFAT...
Edit 2: That somehow won't load. Device just says it's blank or unsupported. I'm confused, why isn't this one working?

Can you try with your hard drives and make a video?

I can't make a test because my portable drives are all formatted ext 4 or ntfs, but I'd check the portabla case itself: many portable cases show strange incompatibilities: a different chipset and/or usb chip can be the culprit. Unfortunately the only way to check this is to open the case. WD may have changed something in the hardware or the firmware, if any, over the time and this could explain why some drives work and some not.
My suggestion is to check the compatibility prior to buy a portable drive.

It is not the hard disk itself
the problem is with the note pro
i have many 2tb & 1tb hard drives
all of them work well with my phones
but none work with the note pro

Not the hard disk but its case. It is the combination of case and taget device that makes the difference. Some of my devices do not work if attached to my modem but do work attached to to my laptop or desktop pc, others do the opposite. The only case I found to be compatible with all my devices is a thermaltake one, that I bought because it was listed in the compatibility list of my desktop's motherboard.

my hdd also requires a battery pack to function over otg. its a 500gb usb3 toshiba. i went round and round with this for months and could never solve the problem. mine is the verizon unit, and i think that has something to do with it as any other non-verizon note pro sees the hdd with no problem, no power pack needed. (even works fine with tab pro wifi model and galaxy s4, s5, and s6). didn't matter how i formatted the drive, it still wouldn't see it without the power pack.
quite frustrating.

This will depend mainly from the Hdd that's inside the case.
I personally assemble my portable hdd's buyn a case and a low power hdd (Wd green or so on). It's very simple and you know what you have. Doing this way I never had power problems even with usb2 sokets.
Keep in mind that an usb3 Soket is rated at up to 1 Amp, while an USB2 socket is rated at max 0.5 Amp. I don't believe that any portable 2.5" HD will absorb all that power , but I would not be surprised if on a tablet the available current was much less, to limit the maximum discharge rate of the battery with consequent risks of dangerous overheatings.
In any case I guess that on the Market there are cheap usb gadgets able to measure the absorbed current from an USB socket. Ebay or Aliexpress can be good sources for such gadgets.

I've posted this problem on other thread too but the question is related to this thread too, hence I'll ask.
My smartphone (an Asus device) is able to power up HDD (2tb Seagate Slim BUP) by itself and can read and write files too(I use Total Commander app along with a 3rd party plugin to read and write to NTFS drive.) Problem is my smartphone's battery drops 1% every 1.5 mins when HDD is connected to it directly.
So I want external HDD to draw power from external supply ONLY (from powerbank or 2A charger) and not smartphone. Ofcourse phone will use some power but primarily HDD should use external supply power.
Is it possible to do this ? If yes, which hub or cable should I use ?
I had bought a OTG Y cable but on connecting micro usb end of cable to smartphone, phone started charging itself and HDD turned off. I tried both 5V 2A charger and powerbank with same output.
Is there such thing as a hub or OTG Y cable won't use external power if smartphone is capable supplying required power? Or the cable was faulty? I'm new to all this so could you tell what went wrong ?

i connected the hdd to the tablet using an otg cable and connected the extra usb from the Y cable to my laptop usb port (because it was short and the laptop is closer than the charger )
using this method my hdd worked on my note pro
sadly i do not have the tablet anymore to test it out now

[Q] G Tablet Reboot with External HDD

Hello,
I thought I'd try and see if anyone else is having a similar issue.
I recently picked up a western digital 500GB passport external hard drive.
I formatted the hard drive to fat32 and double checked there are no extra partitions on the drive.
I'm mostly running CyanogenMod 7 with stock kernal lately and I've found when I hook up the hard drive, the tablet stutters a bit and then reboots.
On bootup it gets to the unlock screen, and when it starts scanning the sd card, the scanning message starts to cycle quickly and the tablet reboots again.
I restored to a backup of vegan5.1 to test on it. Same thing, on insert the tablet starts to hang and reboots.
On vegan though, on the next reboot, it would start normally, but for some reason its not mounting the drive. I search under usbdrive and don't see the folder and file i put on it for testing.
Anyone else having issues like this? Could the problem be its a 2.5" drive and no external power? I know when its hooked up, the light comes on and I can feel the drive spin up and vibrating, so not sure whats going on.
Thanks for the help
That (not enough power) sounds exactly like what's happening, I.e., the drive is drawing so much current from USB that it's either causing voltage to the gtab internals to drop to the point that it resets.
Jim
If this is the case, does anyone know what 2.5" external hdd's will work with the power requirements? (Someone who has one that does work?)
You could always get a powered USB hub, provided that isn't too inconvenient to carry around.'
Edit - Most 2.5" external drives that didn't require external bricks that I have seen have a 2 prong USB adapter. One for data and power and the other for more power only, since each port maxes out at around 500mW I think. Obviously we have only one port, so a powered hub or a jury rig.

I think others have gotten some drives to work, but not sure if they were 500gb. Also, even w a specific model, if the current draw or voltage are just 'on the edge's of working/not working, you may or may not get lucky.
BTW, have you tried w a thicker/heavier USB cable? Thinner/smaller gauge wire has more resistance, so voltage drop would be less over a shorter, heavier gauge cable than over a longer, smaller gauge cable. I have actually had drives not work, then switched to a thicker USB cable then it worked.
Jim
On a similar note, just yesterday I purchased an external USB DVD+/-RW for use with my netbook and tablet and it would not work without a powered hub between the tab and the DVD.
My 160GB ipod classic works fine, but my 1TB external drive that has an external power source doesn't work with any of the ROMs.
Does anybody know the maximum current supplied by the GTab's USB host port?
My 2.5" 500 GB External came with only a short (single) usb A to usb mini cable.
And it gets powered up fine from every laptop/netbook I have tried. They have always displayed 500 mA max current for each port.(when I look in Windows Device Manager, USB Root Hub).
Can the G-Tab supply up to 500 mA from it's USB host port??
I want to make sure it will work on a GTab before I buy it.
confirmed working external HD on g tablet
Using tnt lite 4.2.4, i personally have a 500gb formatted in fat32 working
model 500gb free agen go flex.
I've tried the latest WD passport SE, spun up and didnt detect in astro, ES file explore or stock file viewer
i have over 100gigs on this drive, about 80 of music and some Tosh.0 and everything pops up instantly and runs all the music fine out of MORTY music player... plays perfectly. Must have for your powerhouse. Hope this answers all the unanswered questions about external HD's on g tablet.
I have not tried stock rom or any other roms.
If you are looking for different external hard drives... make sure they are LOW POWER and NOT 3.0. 3.0 seems to require a driver to work. So its kinda hard to walk into a store and buy 2.0 only devices now.
Goodluck all.... i was using a patriot xt 64gb rage flash drive before this but 130 bucks is outrageous vs 75 i paid for the 500gb seagate.

[Q] Can I use a portable hard drive with the note?

Hi, looking to upgrade to a better tablet, currently between the Note 10.1 and an Asus TF300.
I really want to get the note but need to be able to use a hard drive for taking my movie collection with me when I'm travelling.
For Asus TF line, this is as easy as hooking up drive via the docks USB port. In my case I have a Seagate GoFlex drive, which is also powered via the same USB connection.
What I'm wondering is if anyone who has a Note 10.1 and a USB adapter has had any success in connecting up a drive and whether or not it works, powers up, mounts, etc?
I know NTFS is not supported by the Note so willing to root and use an NTFS mounting app from Google Play or format to FAT32 if necessary.
I'm going to be getting new tablet mid next week so need to know as soon as I can. Can't find any info on this anywhere, just general comments on thumb drives.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Has anyone been able to try this?
Had a quick play with the Note 10.1 yesterday in Carphone Warehouse, really like it. Spoke to a Samsung rep who was there but she didn't know either.
If not I'd have to get a Seagate Satellite Wireless drive to stream movies to tablet. As that's around £140 - £180 extra (for 500GB) that increases the total price dramatically as I could just use existing portable drive on the TF300 (which is currently having Jelly Bean rolled out in the US, so UK won't be far behind).
Overall I prefer the note but this is really making it difficult to choose.
sadly I've not seen a USBOTG connector for the Note 10.1 yet. I do this on my S3 with no trouble at all, so as soon as I find an OTG cable for the Note I'll test this. Anyone out there know if the adapters for the Tabs are supposed to work? Rumor is that the HDMI connectors do.

I've read in a few different places that the Tab OTG cable still works fine as it's supposed to be the same 30 pin connector. I was going to get one this I saw on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Connection-...VZ70/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1345401137&sr=8-6
Less bulky and shouldn't get in the way when putting tablet on a stand.
Thanks for testing it if/when you get a cable. It's definitely appreciated.
Ordered one (slightly different as I'm in the US), should be here in a day or two. Will report back!
I haven't tried my OTG adapter yet, but I think the original Tab 10.1 adapter should work. You may need a hard drive that is externally powered - the tab may not be able to bus-power a drive.

Yes, same results as an externally-powered hard drive. NTFS might require some sort of hacks.
it doesn't support the small external hard desk, i personally tried the WD my passport 1 TB and another one with 500gb, it doesn't power it up, however i have a usb otg with a power supply input and it did power up my passport but its useless this way, where the T700 asus keyboard dock powers up any external small hard drive why samsung ! the note is not yet a replacement of a laptop unless it supports hard drives

Thought this might be the case
If I get this tablet, looks like I may need to get a powered hub if using tablet near a power supply.
Not ideal though, may have to get a Seagate Satellite 500GB drive which can stream to the tablet via it's own wifi hotspot. Extra cost I'd have liked to avoided (£130+ in the UK).
Thanks for letting me know though, helps my decision making process (a little at least) on which tablet to get.

What I don't like about the seagate satellite type drives is the fact that you can only use them with pictures, music & stuff like that no file transfer.
That does suck, but my main concern is being able to access my media.
Shame about the extra cost tho.
In the mean time think I'll get a powered usb hub for an existing drive, which will have to do as a short term solution as this will be connected to tv via hdmi adapter at some point.

I just tried this to confirm...
It wont power my 500gb WD drive on its own with both the generic otg cable and official samsung usb attachment.
Although my 16gb thumb drive had no issues with either connector.. Just watched some of The Raid Redemption in 720p fine.
Worse case pick up a couple of 64gb thumbs on sale for traveling.
Lol, oddly enough I did just get a 64gb flash drive now also.

Just got my USB OTG adapter. It connects the Samsung connector port to a USB femail port. When I try to plug in a portable hard drive there is a message that "High power USB device connected" but the drive doesn't spin and isn't mounted. Tried an Ethernet adapter and same thing. I have a powered USB hub and I connected to that and though the hard drive spins it isn't recognized/mounted. Tried connecting a USB flash drive and that isn't mounted.
Ideas?

external hds and otg...

looking to go completely wireless with a hard drive for the note pro for movies, music, ebooks, etc. i bought a toshiba 500gb porta-harddrive (UNpowered) and a usb2 otg cable... but its not quite working because the drive doesn't pull enough power to run (it just sits there ticking). when i plug the drive into a powered usb hub and the hub into the otg, it works fine; but then i'm still tethered by the hub power cord.
anyone have a completely wireless setup that works and care to share what equipment they're using? i'm thinking a usb3 otg cable might do the trick, but haven't been able to find one locally, and want to be certain before dealing with the shipping hassle.

thanks for the response. two things:
1) can you look at the fcc sticker on the hard drive and tell me what the power draw is? it should say something like 5V+- XXX mA. i'm curious about how many amps it pulls. i think the problem with mine is that it lists 1000mA, which exceeds both usb2 (500mA) and usb3 (900mA) specs.
2) is your tablet rooted? not sure it matters, but i'm reading mixed opinions on the matter in the fora, and it might be a factor.
i've also formatted exfat and that didn't seem to fix it, and it works fine attached to a powered hub, so it looks like its a power issue.
thanks,

yes, but usb3 allows for more power to be drawn then usb2 according to the specs. turns out not enough for the hard drive either way unfortunately so the battery might be the way to go. would need a 'y' cable though since there is no power input for the hard drive.
now i'm thinking of just getting one of those hard drive/battery/wi-fi hotspot combos that seagate or corsair makes.
thanks

thanks for the links. by 'external power' i'm assuming you mean wired? not exactly what i'm looking for, though i have a wired hub that works... i'm just trying to find a completely wireless solution for when i go camping, etc.

thanks for the response.
2) is your tablet rooted? not sure it matters, but i'm reading mixed opinions on the matter in the fora, and it might be a factor.
i've also formatted exfat and that didn't seem to fix it, and it works fine attached to a powered hub, so it looks like its a power issue.
thanks,

1. Power draw is not listed on my HDD. The part number is 9ZF2N5-501 1 TB if that helps. The only connector is theUSB 3 connector, no seperate power input.
2. No, my NotePro is not Rooted.

My two setups
Seagate wireless plus 1Tb
As long as the battery of the hdd has enough power to maintain its wifi service this is the absolutely no wires solution. Easy to operate but slow in terms of data transfer. Fast enough to watch Hd-video though.
Hebron connector
EasyACC powerpack 10000mA
Toshiba STOR.E basic 500gb ext. USB hdd
In this setup there are cables.
Powerpack to connectorä
Hdd to connector
Connector to Note
Advantage of this setup is that I can read sd Card, connect USB stick, mouse,
And it's still just a little more than a handful of equipment. The Weight is not worth talking about

thats exactly what i was planning on using it for. i've never been able to stream anything via wifi to the tablet (netflix is okay, i mean from my local drives), though, as it always buffers and stutters making video playback unwatchable. probably just my home network, but for almost 200$, i'm a little gunshy about this option.

will try this. cables connecting the devices i don't mind... i just don't want to be tied to a wall outlet. especially if there are no walls available. :cyclops: i went with the 16000 easyacc for $50, and the 9pin usb otg y cable for $9; so that setup is much cheaper then the wifi/harddrive/battery device.
final outcome
thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions.
so i ended up getting a power pack, and an otg y-cable to hook up to the hard drive. i actually bought two otg cables, one usb3 9pin and a usb2 5pin. the usb2 had a micro female connector for the power, while the usb3 had a standard male connector.
the usb3 otg didn't work. plugged the power pack in, plugged the harddrive in, plugged it into the tablet.... nothing.
the usb2 otg did work, luckily the power pack had a male-female adapter. tablet recognized the hard drive was present, but said it was blank, and es file explorer popped up a warning that otg only supported fat32 (hard drive was originally exfat). so after reformatting to fat32, everything seems to work well enough.
i don't know why the usb3 cable doesn't work, it may just be a dud but i have nothing else to test it with. all in all, an annoying and frustrating experience getting this to work. i don't see why anyone actually thinks these sorts of tablets are going to become laptop replacements when basic functionality requires so much teeth pulling.
so it goes,

Can GS6 Handle 1 TB External HDD?

I have used external hard drive before with my note 3 but it's only 150GB. Now with S6 having no expandable SD card, I'm thinking I'd keep an external hard drive handy. I know it supports USB OTG on the get go but can I it run 1 TB HDD without extra power source? I think this is better than buying a 64 GB model with the same price of 32 GB model and 1TB HDD.
or do you think I should go with the 64 GB model?

Did you have 1TB of storage on your previous phone with SD? If not, why do you need the hassle now? Why not get a MicroSD adapter that is a fewe $ and still use your MicroSD?
To naswer your wuestion - it will not handle a device with that much power draw.

Because my macbook storage is almost full so I find the need of using an external HDD. Do you have any idea what maximum storage GS6 can handle via USB OTG?

Hard to say, but I would first start with upgrading your Macbooks drive instead of looking at solutions like connecting a 1TB drive to a phone.
An extreme solution would be to get get proper cables and use a powerbank to power the drive and have it working on the phone, still.

It's not the size drive that's the issue, its the type of drive you connect. A flash drive is one thing, bit don't think about hooking up a 2.5" mechanical external hard drive. Even if it worked, your battery would die in no time.
Sent from my "bigger is smaller" LG G3
Let me break it down.
Note 3 USB OTG output current: 900mA
Note 2 USB OTG output current: 500mA
Note 4 USB OTG output current: 600mA
S4 USB OTG output current: 500mA
HTC m7 USB OTG output current: 300mA
HTC m8 USB OTG output current: 500mA
So, maybe, maybe not. Note 3 can run every drive I've tried except the power hungry 4TB Seagate Backup Plus Fast.
If you want to measure your drive and find out the current draw, just buy the inexpensive CHARGER Doctor.
Also, the S6 will probably have 600mA output, so it most likely can handle some drives, but you'll need to measure to be sure. I'll be testing an S6 soon to verify output current.

OTG Cable max length?

Hi
What is the maximum length can an OTG cable have?
if I make an OTG cable with a length of 1-2 meters, will it work? ,
the load is just a flash drive .
Thank you.
The length of the cable which you can create is only limited by your resources and by the ability for the electricity to go through it. Therefore, you could make a 2 mile otg cable if you knew how. So to answer your question, if you can make one yea it will work.

today I made an OTG Cable (1 meter ), I attached it to my LG G3 but it was not recognized by the phone, I used the multimeter to check if there was any voltage coming out of the Red and black wires but there was 0 voltage?
is there something I should do in the Software of the G3 to enable OTG cables ?

No clue, this is a gs4 forum. The most likely problem if there was no voltage would be something wrong with the wires.

Yes, using the stock sammy ROM it worked with no extra software or messing about (probably with other roms too).
However, in the sammy rom UMS (usb storage when connected to PC) didn't work how I wanted it to, so I migrated to a CM rom where UMS will work.
However with CM, usb OTG needed a little "help", and I had to use chainfires Stickmount app to re-enable it, but having to option to use both (albeit with an enabler-app) is better than only one or the other.
Please i ve an OTG cable ba my s4 verizon hyperdrive ROM does nt recognize it. Pls help me awt

I'm not familiar with the Verizon variant, but a quick search brought me to the XDA thread for Hyperdrive KK RLS21, and apparently it's pre-rooted, yes?
That being the case, I would try using either Stickmount, by Chainfire, or perhaps USB OTG Helper.
(I note one reviewer of USB OTG helper actually states that it only worked for him when he used both apps in conjunction, but doesn't state his specs so we can't make any real judgements there)
As root-only apps, when you try them, be sure that you grant them superuser permissions (you should also see a little notification of this after every reboot also).
Finally, be careful careful careful about letting the OTG cable disconnect, or fall out of the USB port of your phone... The device will see this as it being disconnected without unmounting, and it does not like this, not one little bit...
I've had a right hell of a time getting OTG to work on my device lately, so I don't speak from technical knowledge, only end-user experience, but once you get it working, be really careful to go into storage settings, and manually "unmount USB storage" every time you want to remove the OTG cable.
Hope some of this helps dude...
Thanks everyone, I got it to work, the 2 meter cable was faulty , The max length I managed to get is 1 meter, I didn't try any longer cables
Is there a limit to how many USB devices can be used at once?
For example: If I used a USB hub, would two controllers and a thumb drive all be recognized and work all at the same time?

In theory it *should* work, I've seen examples of it being used like that before but I'm fairly positive it would need to be a powered hub...?
I have a cheap, non-powered 4-way USB hub, when I get home from work tonight I'll try it out with multiple USB devices and let you know.
This forum discussion seems to indicate using multiple USB devices could work, assuming your ROM supports OTG...

Game Controllers? I'm guessing you're thinking about storing games on the pen-drive and then using the controllers on your phone to make a gaming device?
I'd be very - very - interested to hear how you fair with that!
I know that some games, like San Andreas support joypads on android right out of the box, whereas others might want you to use a joypad/controller app such as USB/BT Joystick Center Gold (sorry, can't find a link to that right now).
As i said, I'd love to hear how you get on as it's something that interests me also - promise to come back & report what you find?
My purpose was to run two XBox 360 controllers via the USB hub via the OTG cable along with the thumb drive for a console game emulator. One might ask why not just try it, but I'm lacking some components currently.

Ok, that's annoying!
So I tried my device (rooted S4 i9505 using CM12.1, running Chainfire's Stickmount app to get OTG working).
Used my un-powered USB hub, with both a 32gb USB pend drive, and a microsoft USB mouse at the same time.
Each device (mouse and drive) works fine when directly connected via OTG.
However, hook them both up via the USB hub, and no dice.
If both devices are attached to the phone using the un-powered USB hub, then only the mouse is recognised - the USB pen drive is not recognised. Stickmount detects zero active mounts.
In addition, I had some strange behaviour from the phone when both devices are hooked up..
Loooong boot times, Novalauncher not wanting to draw to the screen, and to top it off, the phone no longer recognises my SD Card...
I don't actually have a powered USB hub to test with, so I can't really go any further for you on that score right now Tommy.
My initial "suspicion" is that you'll need a powered hub if more than one device is going to be used at a time.
I do happen to have two PS2 joypads, plus a joypad-to-USB adapter (so I can play emulator games on my PC)...
.... so later tonight I'll try hooking up 2x Jopypads>Adapter>OTG Cable>Phone & see if they can be detected.

Thanks for taking the time.
@BigJim.T32
By the way, you seem to think power is the issue, I doubt it. If anything, the phone battery would die quickly, but devices should be recognized. More than one device should be recognized. In fact, the phone is lost and doesn't know what to do with all things connected (as you've said). That sounds like OTG limitations to me. OTG was never designed to run so many things at once is my guess.
OTG functionality was probably just a nice afterthought feature to allow one small connection. Anyway, what do I know? I'm just guessing based on your tests and statements. That doesn't mean that's the way it's going to always be, but that's probably the way it's going to always be with the GS4.

I would have imagined you're correct; And you seem to hit the nail on the head with your analysis - when both devices were connected to the phone via OTG, the mouse took priority, over both the regular SD Card and the mounted USB pen drive, leaving the phone unable to detect either of the two storage options. Came as a surprise when I connected both deices to the phone, checked CM's file manager and couldn't even see my micro SD card in the list, even after a reboot...
The reason I initially suspected that a powered USB hub would be the next place to try (and I hasten to add it's only a suspicion, I have no experimental experience to go on) is only because I've seen photos of other, older Sammy phones simultaneously using both a mouse and USB drive connected via OTG on other sites/forums... And I figured, if they can do it, we *should* be able to do it too!
Sorry, I've not had chance to test with my cheap-ass playstation 2 joypad adapter yet (been at the GF's all weekend - boo!) but I promise I'll test it soon as I can and report back here; hell, I want to know for my own benefit too.

Maximum length of USB 2.0 cable:
USB 2.0 Connectors (Plugs)
The 2.0 specification limits the length of a cable between USB 2.0 devices (Full Speed or Hi-Speed) to 5 meters (or about 16 feet and 5 inches). In other words, you cannot just connect a bunch of extension cables together (like taking a 6 foot cord and extending it with 4 other 6 foot extension cords) and run them 30 feet to another room. However, you can connect a 6 foot cable with a 10 foot extension cable for a total of 16 feet, which is below the maximum cable length for USB 2.0.
Maximum length of USB 3.0 / USB 3.1 cable:
USB 3.0 Connectors (Plugs)
The 3.0/3.1 specification does not specify a maximum cable length between USB 3.0/3.1 devices (SuperSpeed or SuperSpeed+), but there is a recommended length of 3 meters (or about 9 feet and 10 inches). However, the biggest limitation to the length of the cable is the quality of the cable. Results may vary, but with a high quality cable you should be able to go beyond 3 meters. However, to ensure you achieve the best results possible, use an active cable when going more than 10 feet (3 meters).
I got this from some website - Google is your friend! :good:
