[Q] First Tablet! :D - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can I use a memory card to extend the memory? and can I have a one in the tablet and one in the dock? 32+32+16(tablet)?
When using the dock,it drains the dock battery first, then the tablet itself?
Is there a headphone jack on the dock?
Are there any homescreen replacements?

1. Expand the capacity not the memory.
2 It's suppose to do that.
3. No
4. ADWLauncher EX, Launcher Pro
Hope this helps.

Yeah,memory capacity
Thanks. Is this a good tablet to start with?
Been wanting the iPad 2 for a while but it lacks features. Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Sony's Tablet S were also on my list then the Eee Pad Transformer caught my eye.
Dock (16 hours) and memory card expansion are SOOO GOOOD features I like. Is the new EeePad slider a successor to this? (in terms of performance)? I want this tablet to be future proof and last a while until I get a new one.

To elaborate a little:
Yes, you can have a microsd card in the tablet, a standard sd card in the dock and even plug in flash drives or hard drives to the usb ports on the dock.
I don't actually have the dock so I'm not too sure but I believe it drains the dock battery first and the dock battery actually charges the tablet. It has something like 16 hours of battery life with the dock.
The dock doesn't have a headphone jack but the tablet has one on the side so docked or not, you can get to the headphone jack.
I haven't used any homescreen replacements in honeycomb, but I keep reading the ones for phones work (launcher pro, adw, etc).

It's an excellent tablet to start with, not just for the price but for the fact that you can convert it into a netbook by adding the dock. In turn you get 2 USB ports and a full size SD card reader that will give you even more capacity and of course an extra battery which will give you a total of 16 hours of normal usage.
I started with the Viewsonic g-Tablet and the very first thing I did was to root it and throw a custom ROM on it which I went from Froyo 2.2 to Honeycomb 3.1.
The Eee Transformer caught my eye because it had HC 3.1 natively and I had to have it. I looked at the Galaxy 10.1 and it's slim design and it would have been my primary choice if it had the capability for capacity expandability. It also had a $500 price tag instead of a $400 like the TF.
I didn't really give the Sony or the Slider a look because I was already sold on the TF so maybe someone else can elaborate on those tablets pros and cons.
By the way, congrats on your new TF. I'm sure you'll have hours of enjoyment with it.

Thanks for the response,appreciate it

No problem, glad I could help out a fellow TF user.

1.Yes, the dock also has 2 usb ports, which makes it easier to transfer files or for the extra storage space.
2. Yes it does, and if the tablet is 50% battery then decide to use the dock, and battery power in the dock is transferred to the tablet in case you want to undock it.

So what's the max memory I can with the tablet itself, AND with the dock

I have THIS 32gb MicroSDHC inserted into my tablet and THIS 128gb SDXC card inserted into my dock. I also plug THIS SSD in THIS external enclosure with a whole ton of movies and media loaded on it and it's simple as pie to just switch back and forth between my desktop, laptop and tablet anytime I want.
That's a total of 280gb in external media jacked into this thing, so you get the idea of the possibilities. Incidentally, USB 3.0 is backward compatible to USB 2.0 in case you were questioning the interface of the SSD.

NICE!
Exactly what I want/need. Lots of space

Will this get Ice Cream Sandwich?

We are kind assuming (and massively hoping) that it will get ICS. Honestly though, I'm thinking that if ICS was released, there would be some devs who would make a custom rom with it if Asus decides to screw us over..

[Q] Hard Drives Compatible With USB ?

Does anyone know what the requirements/limits are for using a hard disk drive with the dock USB port ?
I am thinking about getting one of these for general purpose external storage, and it would be nice to get one that works with my transformer too.

well there is no usb 3.0 support so those are out unless you get a backwards compatible one. And you also have to check the power consumption i think it hase to be bellow 15volts but im not sure
As far as I know all USB 3.0 drives are backward compatible.
from what i have read most are compatible with highspeed usb 2.0 but allot less are compatible with regular 2.0 hubs

What. There are 4 kinds of USB (not counting on the go, wireless and eventually others) : USB 1.0, USB 1.1, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0
Hi-Speed USB means just USB 2.0, Super Speed is USB 3.0 and the older ones are plain and simply USB.
The theorical top speeds are: 1.5mbps, 12mbps, 480mbps and finally 4000mbps
High speed was briefly and not standardized with USB 1.1 so some device makers had that nonsense on their hubs.
Maybe you misunderstood? Some drives don't like some hubs, but that's a power requirement... If the drive needs x volts and the hub can't offer them because it's already sharing the power with other devices and has no wall plug to get extra power, the drive will just spin up and down without ever starting. 3.5" drives always need their own power adapter, so those always work, 2.5" ones usually draw the power from the USB and as such might be a little hit and miss with hubs, however the Transformer powers them up quite well.
Western Digital makes awesome, reliable, fast and quiet drives, I do have an USB 2.0 My Passport... And several others in various devices

I wouldn't recommend any of those drives. I would instead go with something like THIS HDD, THIS external enclosure and THIS retractable USB 2.0 A-Male to Mini 5-Pin. I have this setup and I also have one with an 120gb SSD. Incidentally, if you go with a SSD there is no motor that has to spin the platters because there's no moving parts so it uses less battery power than the first HDD I showed you. Also I know on the Vantec enclosure it says capable for up to 160gb drives but if you look at the details it says up to 750gb HDD's. I can confirm this because mine is a 750gb HDD.
Got a Buffalostation that works well. If it's the best or not, I wouldn't know.

Thanks everyone. So far It looks like this one is a pretty good choice. It has good reviews and if its confirmed working on the Transformer I might go ahead and grab it.
Hope it'll serve you well.
I just remembered that I had to re-format it to NTFS before the Transformer would recognize it. Just thought I'd let you know.

...but extremely dependable, very effective and lower power consuming than any of those Buffalo drives. I have a Buffalo NAS drive and they're good for that but as for using one for a portable drive I would not. If you're going to use a regular HDD I would at least go with a Seagate or Western Digital drive as they tend to be better drives and are far quieter than any other brand on the market today. Yeah it may be a little more expensive but it's worth it. At least it was for me that is.
i have a 350g western digital that ive had forever.
This drive arrived in the mail the other day. So far, so good; it was easily recognized by the TF. Not sure how fast it drains power as I haven't used it for too long yet, but it's silent. I also have an old 320GB Western Digital drive in an enclosure from five years ago that my TF sees, too. So, I have backups of backups. And that's not including the (2) 32gb cards I'll have once the second one shows up next week.

USB charger needs extras?!?!

Coming from the Iconia Tab A500 I do have some mixed feelings about the Iconia A700. The display is great, and the heat doesnt concern me to much, but the sometimes unresponiveness bothers me lots. Tried to bring up the recently used apps, it stutters, going back to the home page, it stutters. And I disabled the virusscanner and the Acer Ring and am using the Apex launcher.....
But this isnt my biggest problem with the A700, as I will be using it mostly for reading and watching movies, which it handles well. My biggest disappointment is not being able to use USB storage when charging the A700. Is someone in the know of a solution for that? Arent there USB-thingies which fit in the A700, and have 2 USB connectors, one for the charger, one for a USB-stick/USB-HD or whatever?
Would it be possible to create a thingy like that, or do they exist already, and if the answer is yes, will it make it possible to charge and use or a USB-stick, or a USB-HD at the same time?
Please, your ideas/thoughts/solutions for this.
Fully charged it can play movies for about 10 hours. So why recharging it while watching? Just do it before or afterwards.
I know I can do that, but that wasnt what I asked
So please, are there possibilities to do what I asked in my first post?
I just wonder why you try to construct problems, that don't really exist.
But looking at the special connector acer developed, I think there will be no accessory that will fullfil your needs.
Who says it is not a problem? My experience with batteries is, that they work great for a few months, after that their charge cycle gets dramatically worse. And I just want to be able to use a USB-stick while charging at the same time!
And I wonder why ACER made this decision, while it worked perfectly on the A500, so ACER had the knowlege to keep it like in the A500, or would it add t much to the price??? I wonder......
Anyway, on the A500 whenever I used it i had an USB-stick plugged in, when charging or not... Which is impossible now.... So, I understand it's not a problem for you, but it is a problem for me... Otherwise i just as well could have chosen a new IPad..... I want connections, many!
I can understand you to a certain point. I myself asked me why Acer did not chose a more standarized plug-in (like the round one nearly every notebook and many other small devices with external powersupply uses). But anyway I knew the downside before I orded it and can live with it.
Why don't you change from sticks to micro-sdcards? They are also cheap, smaller, hide in the tablet and you free up the micro-usb for the charger (and nothing is dangling around on the bottom). And there exists readers for micro-sdcards that you can use as an usb-stick on your normal computer or other devices.
Think about it instead of infinitly waiting for an other solution.
I understand what you say, and ofcourse it is not a showstopper for me. But it is annoying, I choose - my mistake - blind for the A700 because I was satisfied with the A500, and couldnt imagine ACER would make such a stupid decision to use the micro-USB port for the charger as well. If I had done my homework, and as of now I will, I would have bought the ASUS A700 with dock, speedier Tegra 3 and thanks to the dock better expansion-possibilities.
The Asus dock for the TF700 is not well designed. Don't laugh but it's too light . One user in the TF700 put the tab on his lap in his dock in opened position. Because of the unbalanced weights of those both parts it fell backwards of his lab on the ground. Now he has to use his insurance (luckily for him he has one).
So if you want to watch videos with this combination you either have to hold it or put something behind to prevent it falling back. Acer is not perfect neither it is Asus.
An alternative to access external memory while charging is to us MicroSD cards instead. The A700 can handle up to 32GB (maybe more), and you can just buy a tiny mem card reader to interface with a regular PC USB port.

[Q] USB Adapter to work with ext hd

Hi,
I was curious if anyone got an ext hd to work with the usb adapter?
Everytime i plug it in, it tells me a "high powered ext hd" is connected but unable to read..i know it was made for usb sticks and keyboards etc but has anyone gotten ext hd to work?
Thanks!

I found my 1Tb Hitachi Touro was detected to start with but the power was insufficient to leave it on. It was not working after a few seconds of being plugged in. Memory sticks are no problem but the HDD sucked more power than the 10.1 wants to give...
Shame that an awesome tablet that runs rings around just about everything else falls short of my Acer Icona A501 for this...:crying:
I used a 1A externa battery to power an HDD and it worked just fine on the Note. The HDD was NTFS, but I used USB Mass Storage Watcher and mounted the partitions.
To get it ti power on you need a split USB/ power cable.
Yeah, my Acer A700 has this ability but unfortunately the Samsung Note doesn't have the power.
The fix is to buy a self-powered USB hub... Or use high capacity thumb drives.
Or use a hard drive with provisions for external power.
I plugged my ext powered hd but still no luck. Oh wells! Or maybe split line usb and ac like someone recommended
Thanks guys!

Split USB is your best bet. No hub needed, just an external source of power like a portable battery.
Yeah, but it bites my kickass up-to-date sammy tablet is put in its place by my 18 month old Acer Iconia A501 that supports the 1Tb 2.5" HDD with no problem.
I think this bites a bit. Makes life hard If I need more storage than most thumb drives supply...
No how am I supposed to take a veritable video store with me to watch....
If you could run an external hd via USB it would drain the battery pretty quickly.
Nope, get at least 6 hours of watching videos from the 1Tb hdd on the acer Iconia A501... The battery is not as beefy as the SGnote 10.1's either...
Just an oversite by samsung...
Just a pain now having to carry 2 tablets around...

It won't because the Note will not provide power to the HDD, you have to use external power.

Probably an easy question but, External Hard Disks?

Hi All
Finally been able to order a TF700 from Amazon in the UK, I'm off travelling around Europe at the end of next week and intend to take the 700 with me, my question is can I take my external 1TB drive with me and use it as storage (for films, music etc)
Thanks all in advance
Should be doable, although much depends on the power consumption of the drive -- I haven't got a portable model on hand to test it for you. A power-hungry model could either drain the battery too fast to be practical, or it may just be plain impossible to power it from the tablet, causing it to just bork out on you.
Obvisouly, a powered model would cope just fine, but that's not very practical when travelling, isn't it? I have read reports of people using external hard drives on the TF700 before, so I guess it shouldn't pose too much of a problem, though.
Off-topic: where are you going?
assuming you have the keyboard dock too, not only for the USB port but for the extra battery capacity too.
but my WD 750gb works just fine!
I'd suggest MXPlayer 'cause the stock apps suck at decoding divx and other random container formats.

Cool thanks, just ordered a Toshiba Stor.e Alu 1TB (ebay special buy) which is bus powered, should both be here on the 2nd so will plug it into the dock to check.
I am heading down to Spain as I have an apartment there then going to see where the mood takes me, I have 3 months off work (well I say off work, taking the Infinity with an RDP program and my iPhone so I can tether the data) that way I can still work from where ever I am!
The infinity + dock seems the perfect device for me, can carry it easily, brilliant battery life and the full qwerty keyboard.
I plugged a 500GB bus powered USB drive into the dock USB port and it works great!
My 2TB Western Digital MyPassport works just fine. I did format it to get rid of the silly software, though. Don't really notice any powerdrain at all.
I've somewhat accomplished this before with a 2-usb hard drive. The main usb port for transferring I plugged into the infinity, and I plugged the port for power into a portable external battery. It was recognized as another SD card on my infinity. It worked flawlessly when transferring 800MB+ files.

Yup. It works. Mine is WD 1TB, connected via USB of the dock.
I've tried plugging in a standard usb drive (8gb thumb drive) in the usb port before but I can't browse to it in the stock file browser,"external storage"just shows as empty. Do you use a special app for that?

I use a Seagate 2.5" external. It transfers fine and is recognized but playing videos using either mxplayer or bsplayer is imperfect. There is a lot of stutter. My imperfect solution is to rotate out video files on my device.

Not only is an external a great solution, and works perfectly with the dock. It also has a really nice transfer rate. I was getting over 20mb/ps transferring from my 128gb flash drive to the micro sd. I have yet to spring for a 128 sdxc for the dock, but it's on my list.
So far I tried:
- External usb 2.0 disks
- Wireless mouse
- Linksys usb to ethernet
- Usb sticks
The dock's usb port seems to accept anything: even ethernet that allows me to even use my Infinity in the basement of my house (only wired connections there)

I'm one of those people that traded in there TF201 for TF700... I know this was asked and answered early on in the TF201 threads, so I guess I just carried over from there and never bothered asking it again.
For those that care I also had success with a USB 3.0 External right away. It comes with a secondary USB to power cable but that has never actually needed to be used. The USB 3.0 is actually an internal from my laptop in a USB 3.0 case (Put a SSD in lappy ). So long story short USB 3.0 devices should also work but at 2.0 speeds.

I did the same thing with my laptop, but shortly there after, I came to realize that I wasn't using it at all in complete favor of my TF201/700.... Now I've got a lappy with a pretty 120 ssd, and not being used. Coincidentally, I have more space than that in my tablet now...
right so that we have established that external USB hdd's work, what about external dvd drives and other external devices?

I can test it tomorrow, but I would imagine the storage part of it would work. The issues you would run into is not being able to write to it, not being able to play a regular dvd movie as it would have to be mp4 formatted, and other minor issues that require software support.
We already know gamepads, keyboards, mice, flash drives, sd card readers, and other such work..

[Q] Noob here, Is the Keyboard necessary?

I just sent the Acer Iconia a700 back to Amazon because of the over heating issue. I am afraid of the long term effects on the internal components. I ordered the Infinity TF700 but not the mobile docking station (KB). The primary reason is the money I had to pay for the TF700 and the WOF (Wife Outrage Factor). The tab itself is $120.00 more than the Acer and could not justify a KB (another $120.00)at this time. I know the Dock offers more functionality to the tab ie;longer battery time, additional usb port, etc. but do I really need the KB to enjoy the TF700? I have never used a external KB with my other tabs only the virtual one. Thanks

In my opinion, the greatest advantage vs external keyboard is the extra battery and using it at a stand. The extra battery will give you a full day of usage with out charging. If most of the time you have a place to plug in your device and not mind to hold the tablet then an external keyboard should be fine. I personally think it worth it, specially I watch a lot of movies and enjoy the additional power from the dock keyboard.

I sent my A700 back for the overheat thing too...
I didn't get the keyboard dock mainly because I always hold the tab in portrait unless watching TV or forced into landscape by an app.
The dock would be a nice addition tho.
I have a dock. Is it necessary for me? Not at all. Do I use it? Maybe once a month but....
When travelling it's a life saver
I love the keyboard. It's great when you want to extend your battery. It's also easier to use the device while the charger is plugged in.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW
The keyboard dock has a couple of advantages:
- Day extra battery charge (charges when the tablet is not in use, as well)
- USB (Main pro! Extra storage options!)
- SD slot
- Stand
- Keyboard can be used to control the apps (i.e. spacebar for pause)
- Screen protection during travel and storage (Closes like a laptop).
It depends on what you want to do with it.
Do you only browse websites?
Only play a few games like Angry Birds?
Watch a few photos?
Do you only use it at home?
Do you only read a few book son it every now and then?
Nothing more?
Don't get the dock, it's not worth it.
Do you play Games? The big ones? (The dock serves as a stand+extra battery, which is nice since you can connect a controller to the tab.)
Do you watch films and entire series?
Are you on the road a lot?
Do you intend to write entire documents?
Do you require more storage space/an USB port?
Do you need/want the extra protection whilst travelling?
Get the dock.
