Okay First I have to say Hi! haha anywho I just bought the Droid 2 Global and I am rather confused, I bought it from a guy and he had cricket on it, but it doesn't have any internet or at the very least it wont let me connect to the internet(He still hasn't canceled his service on the phone) it has a single 1x up top that seems to be pushing out but not receiving anything....I don't know if this is an issue of it not being fully flashed or perhaps he just didnt pay his bill an I wonder will it get fixed once I get it turned on in my name, for some reason I doubt it, so how do I find out if the phone is fully flashed or just half flashed and if it is only half can I change it to full myself? And also with this phone what type of ummm system I guess should it be running because when I took out the verizon simcard it said switching to CDMA soooo yeah kinda confused any help is appreciated and also if I go on a head an root this will it mess with anything need for me to fully flash it, if it's not fully flashed already?
The issues your having isn't a matter of needing to be flashed. The phone sounds like it's been deactivated. You need to activate it on your service now for you to be able to use it.

Bingo. You have no way of knowing what he did or didn't have, thus at this point you have no idea what really is or isn't working.
Why are you complaining about not being able to get on the internet on a phone activated in somebody else's name? You should have it properly activated in your name with the correct plan and make sure the balance is current then complain if it doesn't work then.

Hey troll, why waste your time posting? You are of ZERO help to anyone. I fkn hate annoying trolls like you.
First off, if you are still on cricket, cricket is CDMA only, so sim cards are a no-no.
Second, if there is only a 1x up top, the culprits could be POOR RECEPTION first, or if not, a bad PRL file, which you can update easily by hitting *228. It could be a damaged radio, it could be a ****ty ROM. I flash crickets all the time, err I mean droids to cricket, and usually people pay the least amount of money they can to flash their $300 to $600 phones, ill never get it.
If its a cricket rom with a green iris on boot, then you're in trouble. That's the worst rom PERIOD.
My adive to you, without being liek the TROLL above this post, is to get the phone in your name first, and then find someone who knows what they are doing first, unless you are really dedicated to fixing this yourself.
If you want to ride it solo, then start from a clean wipe, and reflash the PRL, flash a new ROM, reset your APNs, and get on the 55 plan. So you don't worry about autostart and running .sh scripts at startup.
Good luck.

I fail to see how he was "trolling" since he said the exact same thing that we were saying. Old phone that I have that are now deactivated still show 1x, but will not access any data. Hence, that is the most likely culprit.

I don't know, I kind of agree with the others. How can you know what services are provisioned on the device if you haven't procured service for it. I work in IT and we deal with alot of phones and when we deactivate phones we experience the same thing.
quick question, did a little searching and i dont know much about this or id figure it out myself, but if I unlocked my thunderbolt what networks would it be available to be used on?
You can't "unlock" the Thunderbolt. Theoretically it can work on any other carrier with the same CDMA band as Verizon, but actually getting them to add the MEID to their database and getting it on the other network is a whole different story.
It is 100% impossible to use the Thunderbolt on any GSM carrier. The sim slot is for LTE, not GSM. There is only a CDMA and LTE radio in the TB, not GSM, LTE and CDMA.
As g00s3y said, you'd need to have your meid added, which is impossible with the TB, since we don't have meid.
sorry kiddo
so hypothetically if it was unlockable it could be used on another wireless network like the band Verizon uses. Its just not possible actually "do" it.
The only other network would be sprint. It's not a gsm phone, its cdma, so there's no such thing as unlocked on a cdma phone really.

Technically, there is a GSM radio in the TB. However, I doubt it's actually hooked up in hardware. I wouldn't know how to check if it was... but it would probably require a lot of modification in software and hardware to get it to work, minimum.
I'd say it's 95% impossible to use the TB on a GSM carrier.

I am not debating whether or not this has a gsm chip in it, I am saying that you can't activate it, on a gsm network now, as none have a 700 network.

Just look at my original post. I was just correcting IISiDeK1CKII on the one point that the phone has a GSM Radio (as you can clearly see), but he seems bound and determined to misunderstand what I say.

NO
get verizon or get a different phone.
Listen, regardless of the nonsense Zshazz keeps spewing... this phone cannot be used on any other network than Verizon right now. The EVO/EVO 3d, the Inspire HD or the HD7 are your best bets for a 4.3" screen on another network.

the point he is trying to make is that when you say **** like that and n00bs skim the thread they think "oh i can go buy a TB and use it on Rogers in canada or something" and then we hear no end of n00b illiteracy.
Yes there is a GSM chipset but it's not a GSM phone, it never will be it works solely on VZW. Period. The end.

This is a fact, back up by Qualcomm:
http://www.qualcomm.com/snapdragon/specs
There is no subtext to this, nothing you should be looking into. I'm merely stating a fact. This, of course has pissed IISiDeK1CKII off because he can't handle anyone correcting him. Hence why he's decided to create an argument that doesn't exist to hopefully distract everyone.
However, I doubt it's actually hooked up in hardware.

The chip is there, but it has to be hooked up to specifically work. Does it get power? Is it connected to the antenna? How about the Sim card slot? I'm saying that I specifically doubt that it is. Another way to phrase it is that I'm saying it probably isn't possible for it to actually work.
I wouldn't know how to check if it was... but it would probably require a lot of modification in software and hardware to get it to work, minimum.

Now, let's say if it were possible. I made it clear I don't believe it is. But if it were possible, just as speculation, then to make it work would also require a lot of hard work getting the software/firmware to work right and maybe even some hardware modifications requiring an electrical engineer well versed in their field. This is the minimum I'd expect before you could get it to work, if it were hooked up in hardware and actually could work.
I'd say it's 95% impossible to use the TB on a GSM carrier.

If the weatherman said "there's a 95% chance of rain tomorrow", would you prepare for it to rain tomorrow? Of course, because he's saying it's extremely likely to rain tomorrow and if you specifically prepared for it not to rain, you'd be making a bad idea according to most people.
The same is being said here: It's almost certainly impossible to use the TB on a GSM carrier. Not strictly 100% impossible, because, like I said, there is still the question of whether it's hooked up and whether someone would have the time and desire to get it to work. Only someone who worked on the TB could say for certain if it's hooked up. So, understanding that I'm not a god and don't "know" things without actual facts to back it up (unlike IISiDeK1CKII, who has been working on a degree in art which has apparently given him omniscience to say definitively), I've acknowledged that my knowledge of the subject is incomplete, so I have allowed myself to say "It's extremely unlikely to work" which was my answer to the topic.
Now cue IISiDeK1CKII coming in and saying "oh you're backtracking" when everyone can clearly see what I said in my first post. IISiDeK1CKII, it's time to stop putting words in people's mouths who have just pointed out a single inaccuracy in your post.

Each phone has a unique identifier for them to be recognize by their provider. You cannot change your imei. It is also illegal in some places. If you really try and get another imei from a different phone, then two phone will share the same line.
That it's why i think you mean something else when you say imei.
Why don't you take your phone to your carrier and ask them what is needed?
Only possible reason one may want to change IMEI is to prevent from getting stuck with data plans that not everyone needs. So, if you have a dumb phone, you could change the IMEI of your Infuse to the IMEI of your dumb phone (it is quite a process) and then use it with AT&T.
Most of us have WIFI at home/work/gym/hotels; hence, it is really unnecessary to be paying $30-$40 bucks for data every month, it adds up, $350/year.
I like to have my unlimited data plan to listen to Pandora in my car and you can do just fine with $10 Medianet as opposed to smartphone data plans if you use dumb-phone IMEI.
IMEI can be changed to another IMEI, or Samsung generic IMEI (which is easier to do). Carriers in some countries (not US) block generic IMEIs.
Overall, it has uses. Legality, obviously, is a question. Some people attribute it to changing VIN on the car, which is understood. People pay a fortune for their phones and IMEI modification allows thieves to get away with our prized possessions - major downside. I think of it as changing identity string on the browser.

For some reason I can't get any service with AT&T but it picks up service with T-Mobile.
I have it rooted, unlocked with the Ace Hack Kit and running ICS AOSP.
Any ideas?
Edit: I've tried flashing different radios still no luck.
Are you using an ATT SIM? Can you get ATT in your area with a different phone?
I tried three different ATT sim cards and yes there is ATT service in my area.

I also get an error when searching for networks in the settings.
"error while searching for networks"
This is so confusing.
You don't need a correct APN for phone signal. So that shouldn't matter. Could this phone be possibly stolen or involved in an ATT account that was terminated early? Maybe ATT has it blocked from the network?

I was gonna say this, my friend picked up a rooted phone a month ago. Had the same issue as the OP so we called AT&T and sure enough the IMEI # or something like that was reported stolen and had service terminated. They went on to tell him he's S.O.L.

This is a really interesting post. This is the first case I ever heard of where AT&T blacklisted a stolen device. I hope it is true. Typically, they just terminate service by deactivating the sim card and don't worry about the device.

thats like using google to diagnose your car. apples and oranges. your next step should be to contact ATT and find out if that imei number is listed as blocked from the network before taking wild stabs in the dark from reading forums about phones different than yours.
not to knock you for searching though, it is appreciated
Did a little searching and it seems ATT does not blacklist IMEI codes. Just sim cards. Go figure.
I find it difficult to believe it is a motherboard issue. If it picks up a T-mobile phone signal there is no reason why it should not pick up an ATT phone signal if the sim card is good and there is service in the area.
I gave up and sold it to someone using tmobile
since it was rooted, ATT is still able to block the cellphone? I thought they might lose the connection with this device... Sounds interesting

Since fernandezhjr the police of interesting posts wanted to poke some holes in my story...I asked said friend for a little more detail, turns out the phone in question was sold with the simcard in which she tried to use. Shady seller I guess sold the phone and cancelled the simcard on the phone, not sure if the phone was stolen or was actually the sellers phone but regardless that's neither here nor there. Once removing the simcard she was able to use the phone with her simcard.
edit: phone was never rooted. not sure if that matters to anyone.

Heh heh. Like I said before, no poking, just spotting. I don't think anyone would like misinformation being posted, even if it isn't intentional. And when it comes from a more informed member like yourself that likes to be helpful to others, it is more likely to be accepted and/or acted upon. I also only question you when I've had conflicting experiences or seen reliable sources that conflict. The non blacklisting of devices is one that has been discussed here before and typically pops up in many other forums.

First of all, I'm a Sprint user, so the concept of sim cards is kind of foreign to me.
Just picked up an Atrix 2 for a friend, rooted, flashed CM10.1 from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2121029
Rebooted, everything's dandy. Turned it off, put in their sim card, and I still have no service. So I poked around, and under Settings -> More... -> Mobile Networks -> Network Operators, if I choose either Search networks or Choose automatically, I get an error. I don't have the sim card now, so I can't say, but one of them was "Error while searching for networks" I think and the other "Can't connect to this network right now"
I'm not sure how to tell if it's recognizing the sim card, or 2, if there's something I have to do to get service.
I'd rather not flash it back to factory if I can help it. I was hoping someone here could help. Thanks!

Did you ever try it on stock? if yes, did it work there?
Also, what carrier are you using, and if it is not whatever your phone was sold for (ATT if it has the symbol on the bottom, but not sure if you are in the US. If it is not the same carrier, it must be unlocked, but it should have asked for a code. Does it give you a message saying no sim card ever, or does it just not work at all?
I know that was a lot of questions, but there are a lot of things that it could be.
Also, try just blowing in the sim card slot and stuff to clear it of any lint or crap that could be in there.

Whoa. Brighton. I'm in Milford. Crazy. No, I didn't try it stock, but I just RSD'd it back to stock, so I'll try that next. I don't have the sim card with me. She had to put it back in her phone so she could have something. I'll try it in a bit.
Yeah, it's ATT. And when the sim card was in it, if I remember correctly, it just said "No Service". Before I flashed it to stock, it DID say "No SIM Card" So I guess it's seeing it to an extent. I'll try stock and report back.
Do I need to have the sim card in it once so it registers on ATTs system or something, then I can CM the thing? Like I said, I'm on Sprint, so sim cards are new to me. Thanks!

Anyways, yeah that means it's seeing it and it is probably an apn problem. you NEED the sim card for any network stuff to work. let me know about stock, it could just bee that cm did something dumb, but my guess is you need the right apns for ATT, which I could give you. The current phone is a Huawei something. Fusion? Fusion 2? I'm not sure. But it's Android, but it's 2.2 or 2.3. It's a pretty lame phone. I'll get back over there and grab the sim in a few hours, and see what it does.
So in theory, stock Atrix 2 rom, and her sim, it should just work, right?

It Should, but might not. if it does, keep the sim in and flash cm again if you want. if not, post a screenshot of settings--about phone--status
or just post the info of network through Mobile network state, and make sure the imei shows a number not some error.
also check under wireless & networks--Mobile Networks--Access Point Names and make sure stuff seems normal there. (should have ATT stuff of some kind)

Oh, I forgot to add that to the OP. I did look at the IMEI and there was a long string there. Not sure what it means, but...

That's fine. it is basically the serial number of sorts for the radio chip. it is distinct for all phones, and is how it is identified internationally for carriers and unlocking and such. sometimes with broken harware/firmware this can become unknown or something, so just wanted to make sure it wasn't a problem. I would say there is a chance you need to get it activated from att. you can't totally share a sim card, as they want ou to add the phone to the plan, but if the old one is going away, it would be worth just bringing it in and asking for a new card.

That would probably be the problem then. I need to have att add it to the plan? I wonder if I can call them and if I'd need any account info. Dammit

what is the background of the plan. like what did you have before this phone plan wise, and what are you trying to do now. my guess i things are not set up right, which could end up costing you more money if you have an old plan or something. let me know, and I can see if anything is glaring, but you probably have to have it activated or something, I remember calling to activate i or something, but I am not sure exactly what the process was.
the only info the will likely want is the last 4 digits of your SSN (or whoever's the account is under), the IMEI, and maybe something from the sim card.

Her grandpa's plan. She's currently using the Huawei, and in the end, I want her running the A2 with CM. I have nothing to do with the plan, technically. I'm just trying to help out. I'll get that info, and give them a call before I try. Or while I try.

Just an update, ended up needing a new sim card. Then she lost the phone in a field a few days later. :good:
