I have 2 Nexus 5 devices. The one my wife owns does not like the latest Google Camera apk from the Play Store. I have re-flashed the stock 4.4.4 ROM from Google as well as verify the checksum of the image. The stock camera apk that comes with the ROM works fine. I have tried booting into safemode and finally got the new camera working. Unfortunately after booting to normal mode the camera crashes again. I have cleared cache and it did not help. Also sometimes when she calls me her voice sounds garbled and jittery a little. The bootloader is unlocked but no root access. My question is could the unlocked bootloader be the issue? Or is there something else I can try? Thank You in advance.

I don't think it's the unlocked bootloader. I'm running LiquidSmooth (with unlocked BL of course) and it works fine

Bootloader status doesn't have any impact on camera or any system files for that matter.. Since you've already flashed factory images and still face this camera issue, it could be a hardware issue.. Do you get these crashes while using other camera apps as well?

I tried a bunch of camera apps from the Play Store and none of them crashed. Is it possible that the camera has bad firmware?

My wife has Nexus 5 (it is completely stock and unrooted with unlocked bootloader) running running Android 4.4.2. Recently, the stock camera app stopped recording videos. Tapping the record button does not do anything while camera works perfectly in photo mode. I factory reset the phone but the problem persists. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
lock the bootloader and send it back

Try to clear data and cache from camera in settings.
If that doesnt work either and you really have done the factory reset, you have to send it to repair bc of an hardware deffect. :crying:

I will try that but I think factory resetting clears cache, anyway. The phone camera worked fine previously but now suddenly it stopped.
Thanks anyway.
I have the same problem, when I change the camera app to record nothing happens when I press the red record button. I think the problem started when I upgraded to 4.4.2

And you flashed the right one? Hammerhead-4.4.2
Like i said before, if that doesnt help, you have to send it back to get a replacement.
You need to uncompress each download before use, which creates a new directory for that exact download. That directory contains a ./flash-all.sh script, which handles the various operations, installs the necessary bootloader, baseband firmware(s), and operating system. Note that this operation deletes all user data by default

Make yure that data gets wiped also! Dont forget to backup your sdcard bc it gets also wiped.

I did not flash anything. The phone was OTA updated. Please note that the phone received OTA update and when I applied it, it completed its process but did not update (it was still on older android version) and this happened several times (I mentioned this on a separate thread here on XDA old post).

I downgraded Nexus 5 from Android 4.4.2 to 4.4 and now the camera is working fine. But I am afraid of updating it back to 4.4.2.

Yes, I did it. Flashed the stock 4.4.2 and everything seems to work fine. However, when I tried updating using OTA after downgrading the update failed and stopped with "Error" message. After flashing 4.4.2 from scratch will hopefully allow smooth future OTA updates. Thanks everyone.

Glad you worked it out!
Good thing is - you got a Nexus, so its easy to flash all the stuff and go back to stock/factory image/recovery/...
:highfive:
Any update on this? I have this exact problem. No unlock, not root just pure OTA stock.
1. Video does not record. You press the red button and no timer comes up.
2. A VID_20140126_224910.mp4.tmp file is created 395.54 KB.
3. Time lapse works as do all the other camera functions.
4. The basic Google FAQ has generic instructions if an app does not work so I followed these.
5. in safe mode the camera works fine.
6. Power off and on again. The Video Camera then works fine and creates normal .mp4 files.
Things I have done that may affected the Camera in the first place;
1. Clear cache.
2. Put a .thumbnails file in DCIM to stop the gigantic .thumbnail folder being created.
3. Running nova launcher.
Unlikely these are a factor as I isolated them as an issue and rebooted but worth a mention just in case.
Camera works but have found the it subsequently stopped working again and had to repeat the Google FAQ steps to fix an app.
To answer my own question I found the uninstalling Said It_1.3.37.apk fixed the problem and just to prove it reinstalling brought the problem back.

Quick update. the developer emailed me back. He co firmed it does the same on his device and will send an update.
Strange problem here.
I noticed on Paranoid Android beta 5 that while in the camera app I couldn't switch to the front camera. I reflashed the ROM and still no front camera. I finally decided to reflash a factory image from google themselves. Now when I open the camera, still no option to use the front camera. I've attached an image to show that the option is missing still. Its not an issue of the camera app crashing when trying to switch, the option just isnt there at all. Anyone any ideas?
Interesting...
Maybe look at jinshus camera mod and try that. Or at the very least flash the stock camera
This is very strange especially after you flashed a factory image.
Did it work before?
Sent from The Deathstar
Sometimes after flashing rom, some system files still carry into the new rom and this might break some of the lib files for the camera.
Full wipe before and after flashing stock image to see if it working.
It did work before. I locked & unlocked the bootloader, then performed a factory reset then flashed 4.4 factory image. After that I updated to 4.4.2 using the phones system update. Still no front camera menu. Is it possible it's hardware? I would have thought hardware would have left the option to choose front camera but crashed or black screened when I try and select it. I'm not even rooted now on pure out of the box stock.

If it is completely stock now and it still happens it does sound like hardware which is strange because normally you would at least have the option to switch to front camera and then crash or nothing or something.
Try a factory reset wipe cache/ dalvik againa nd if that doesn't work then I think it is time to look at RMA
Tried another factory flash, then tried the camera mod, both the modded file and the return to stock file. Still no front camera. Bizarre.
After installing Jishnu's Camera Mod, the opposite effect that was intended happened on my n5 and now the camera is almost useless. it won't focus on anything and is basically unusable. I have tried installing new roms, i just installed a Cyanogenmod nightly by flashing the zip through CWM Recovery but it still hasn't fixed the problem. Someone please help me!!! :S
Get in touch with jishnu by PM and ask for an undue zip. Failing that use a root file Explorer to wipe the files and replace with the right ones. It's only software. I'd uninstall the camera and get it from the play store and move it to a system app
Sent by mobile telephone.
@Neardood1
Go to jishnu camera mod thread, in the op there is a restore back to stock camera flashable zip for 4.4 and 4.4.2, download the appropriate zip and flash it through recovery.
The mod is only for stock, cataclysm and purity ROMs.
I would also recommend making/or having a nandroid backup before flashing any mods or changing system apps on your device, in the event that something should go wrong, restore your nandroid backup and your good as new.
that's the first thing I did and it didn't work. I just installed Cyanogen with the PC app and still its useless. I'm running out of ideas here That mod must have changed something deep in the software for it to f*** it up this much

Hmmm. Yeah something's not right.... I would try to contact jishnu and see what he has to say.
Otherwise you might have to flash back the stock image and start over from scratch.
today isnt a good day
updated to franco r37, Jishnu's Camera fc nonstop
flashed the restore zip -> fc
flashed gapps photosphere zips -> fc
very strange
maybe tomorrow it will working again
Are you performing a full wipe before installing another ROM. There is no way this is a software issue if you are doing this correctly because a new ROM would over write the files that caused the camera issue. Either that or now you have a hardware issue.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
If you really think it's the app, do a complete restore to stock using fastboot adb and the factory image.
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#hammerheadkot49h
I've been using the camera mod without problems until today.. FC for me too. Nothing changed that I'm aware of. Reflash didn't help.
@OP
Do you have any other camera apps installed and they also don't work ?
For me only Jishnu's Camera has stopped working, the LG Camera Mod, SnapCam, ProCapture etc. are still working like before
i miss the Jishnu's Cam :crying:
regards
He's posted a new update in the camera thread and now mine is working again. Give it a try.
not for me :crying:
wiped dalvik & cache partition, flashed the Jishnu's Cam v1.5 but still fc
well its seems that the play store/service update kills the cam for me
restored a backup, cam works perfect, updated to the 1.5 version, works perfect
after a while lbe security asked me if the playstore/services should be updated -> allowed and baamm cam killed
restored the same backup again and rejected the update for playstore/services and cam still works
rly strange scenario

Yeah now the camera app will just randomly stop working, so will other apps like snapchat; they all say they can't connect to the camera. I'm starting to think its a hardware fault but that doesn't explain why it stopped working as soon as I installed this mod
How was the end of this story?

anyone else have a problem with the camera app freezing on 4.4.3? Tried multiple roms and kernels with full wipes between them and still have the problem. The app freezes about a half second after opening.

no problems here. have you tried clearing the data for the camera app?
Nope. Works fine here. Maybe try a different camera app to rule out the camera itself.
thank you for the replies. If I uninstall the update and use the old stock camera it works fine. Its the Google camera that causes it to freeze. Last night the Google camera was working fine but when I woke up it would freeze.

Well the issue isn't the Google camera app since its not a widespread issue with people. Something else is causing it.

I did a factory reset and clean install of 4.4.3 Kit Kat and now my camera is freezing also. Was working fine before with OTA 4.4.3.
Now when I first open the camera app, it opens and the app freezes for about 5-10 seconds then starts working. I've removed updates from the camera app which rolls it back to the old Nexus 5 camera app which works fine. As soon it is update to the new Google camera app, starts freezing again. I used Titanium backup to install all of my old apps, so Im assuming something happened there. Wish I knew of a way to fix without having to wipe out my phone and start all over.

Having the same issue here..!
I noticed it the first time when the new camera was introduced (so for the last 2 releases), means also with 4.4.2!
Also for me, when I remove the updates everything is fine.
When I updated to 4.4.3 I reset my phone before (completely) so I assume wiping doesn't fix it?!
I'm nervous to say anything because I might jinx it, but it hasn't froze in a few days now.
For those wondering, stock rom and kernel, xposed installed but no new mods.

Same here - Exposed installed, stock and rooted, but nothing other than that. Unfortunately, mine is still freezing.
Right, same here: stock ROM (rooted) with Xposed (for App ops and Dynamic Navbar mod)...
Maybe something with Xposed?!
Hi, my nexus 5 is running Android version 6.0.1. This past week I have had the problem that when I switch on the camera app which came with the phone, it causes the phone to shutdown and reboot immediately. After it reboots if I try to use the camera it happens again. My phone is not rooted.

Try another apk:
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/camera/camera-3-2-045-release/
The Arm version, not Arm64.
Thank you for your input. I installed the camera apk that you suggested. Unfortunately the result was the same, shutdown and reboot when starting app. I have also since done a factory reset with the same results.

If you're comfortable with flashing, you could try upgrading to a new ROM. My N5 has Pure Nexus 7.1.2 and works very well, rooted with Magisk.
@dog2694
You might try one of these:
http://thedroidguy.com/2017/04/5-best-camera-apps-2017-android-device-1071650
I had Camera Zoom FX, and it seemed to work fine, but since I take so few photos I just went back to the stock camera.
If these also cause a reboot, then it may be a ROM problem, which is simple to fix, or a hardware one, which isn't.
