[Q] Nexus 5 camera does not record video - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My wife has Nexus 5 (it is completely stock and unrooted with unlocked bootloader) running running Android 4.4.2. Recently, the stock camera app stopped recording videos. Tapping the record button does not do anything while camera works perfectly in photo mode. I factory reset the phone but the problem persists. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

lock the bootloader and send it back

Try to clear data and cache from camera in settings.
If that doesnt work either and you really have done the factory reset, you have to send it to repair bc of an hardware deffect. :crying:

I will try that but I think factory resetting clears cache, anyway. The phone camera worked fine previously but now suddenly it stopped.
Thanks anyway.

I have the same problem, when I change the camera app to record nothing happens when I press the red record button. I think the problem started when I upgraded to 4.4.2

And you flashed the right one? Hammerhead-4.4.2
Like i said before, if that doesnt help, you have to send it back to get a replacement.
You need to uncompress each download before use, which creates a new directory for that exact download. That directory contains a ./flash-all.sh script, which handles the various operations, installs the necessary bootloader, baseband firmware(s), and operating system. Note that this operation deletes all user data by default

I did not flash anything. The phone was OTA updated. Please note that the phone received OTA update and when I applied it, it completed its process but did not update (it was still on older android version) and this happened several times (I mentioned this on a separate thread here on XDA old post).

I downgraded Nexus 5 from Android 4.4.2 to 4.4 and now the camera is working fine. But I am afraid of updating it back to 4.4.2.

Yes, I did it. Flashed the stock 4.4.2 and everything seems to work fine. However, when I tried updating using OTA after downgrading the update failed and stopped with "Error" message. After flashing 4.4.2 from scratch will hopefully allow smooth future OTA updates. Thanks everyone.

Good thing is - you got a Nexus, so its easy to flash all the stuff and go back to stock/factory image/recovery/...
:highfive:

Any update on this? I have this exact problem. No unlock, not root just pure OTA stock.
1. Video does not record. You press the red button and no timer comes up.
2. A VID_20140126_224910.mp4.tmp file is created 395.54 KB.
3. Time lapse works as do all the other camera functions.
4. The basic Google FAQ has generic instructions if an app does not work so I followed these.
5. in safe mode the camera works fine.
6. Power off and on again. The Video Camera then works fine and creates normal .mp4 files.
Things I have done that may affected the Camera in the first place;
1. Clear cache.
2. Put a .thumbnails file in DCIM to stop the gigantic .thumbnail folder being created.
3. Running nova launcher.
Unlikely these are a factor as I isolated them as an issue and rebooted but worth a mention just in case.
Camera works but have found the it subsequently stopped working again and had to repeat the Google FAQ steps to fix an app.

To answer my own question I found the uninstalling Said It_1.3.37.apk fixed the problem and just to prove it reinstalling brought the problem back.

"Can't connect to camera" error after upgrading to 4.4.2

Got my N5 last Friday (6th Dec), i upgraded to 4.4.2 today via an OTA update but now every time i launch the camera i get a "can't connect to camera" error, i got the same error even when i try the awesome camera app.
I tried rebooting several times and even force stopping the camera app but it still doesn't work. I haven't rooted my phone as yet.
Any ideas?

After 4.4.2 update, I'm getting Gallery stopped working error when device is unlocked and I try to start the camera.
When starting the camera from the lock screen, it works.
Also, manually starting Gallery or Photos app works without issues...
im wondering if i should wait to see if this issue resolves itself or if i should downgrad to 4.4

Since it was multiple apps, I would assume it's going to be an issue within the system. If he's stock, he likely doesn't have anything to restore so I don't really see many options. I suppose he could install a custom recovery, then install the 4.4.2 stock/root ROM

clearing its data also clears its cache. you can try getting the camera apk and installing the camera, kinda "updating" it. but if that doesnt work, @Synyster06Gates would be right in the next step, flashing the factory img and going from there. btw, this would be a good time to flash a custom recovery, and a custom rom(which probably fixes your camera).

It worked pretty well when i had 4.4, i encountered an issue once (when the camera was launched, all i got was a black screen) but that issue resolved itself. After upgrading to 4.4.2, i launched the camera once and it worked but it never worked again after that, still getting the same message.
Camera is working good for me on 4.2.2

Multiple problems after flashing 5.0 stock images

Hi,
I just flashed my device with the new Android 5.0 stock image, only now i have multiple problems:
* mic doesn't work (i noticed since ok google detection setup doesn't work)
* no sound
* a lot of UI hangs/ crashes
* YouTube video's wont play
* calling doesn't work.
i already reflashed it multiple times, problems still persist.
i wiped my device before i flashed so i didn't dirty flash, and flashed all the .img separately.
Can anyone help me with this?
Update:
flashing this one with TWRP worked for me:

Multiple Android 5.0 problems on Nexus 5
I can't really help you much, but I wanted to express the fact that I also flashed the stock firmware image of Lollipop into my Nexus 5 and I am
experiencing a plethora of issues: Besides the ones you mention, please add CAMERA not working, show distorted image on screen, both back and frontal camera.
Shame on Google to release such a buggy and crappy firmware.... Truly expected it to be pristing.
On the other hand, have had on my other Nexus, a 4, the port of Android L and AOSP Android 5.0, pretty much flawless.... just barely minor issues...

There are issues:
- Battery dies in 4 hours. Battery stats aren't even refreshing to find out what is causing it. Phone is hot and eats like 1% in few mins. It actually discharges faster than I can charge! GSam battery monitor says it's Exchange Services that is eating all battery.
- Smart Lock loses connection to Windows 8.1 laptop
- Unable to unlock device, screen shuts down after you type in unlock PIN, after few retries it works

It's not crappy as I have no issues at all but that's not to say there are a few bugs here and there but mostly graphical bugs really. Functionality is flawless on my N5
Not even encountered a single crash, 8 hrs+ since installed. I wiped everything and didn't restore any apps. All freshly installed.
No solution I'm afraid, but just to let you know that I'm having exactly the same problem with the Microphone... so no phone calls, voice search etc. Just doesn't pick up any sound.
i reflashed the developer preview for now, that one does work without any problems (only the battery drain bug)
What method did you use to flash. Through a tool kit or by fastboot
i used fastboot, also tried it with a toolkit, both same result.

Oh hell... that's... so embarrasing.
I have a Pressy.... I forgot I had it plugged in.... for some reason Lollipop saw it as a heaphone and mic.
I'm gonna just go sit in the corner now.
Guys, here's a thought - as it's a new base perhaps doing a FULL RESET is the way forward
I always do a complete reset and flash from fastboot (not bloody toolkits) and never have any issues so I'm going to assume everyone with issues isn't wiping the phone first (I know the OP says they did a full wipe but in general, most don't)
Thinking this was a problem with the factory images... Didn't make any sense at all.

This worked for OP but I just tried to flash this image and it did not work. Still no MIC SOUND. THis all happened After I flashed Xtrasmooth ROM from the xda dev section. Man this is depressing, is there anything else I can try ? I did a full wipe prior to installing it. Phone does not pick any sound. Only pick sounds during call in speakerphone mode....
I notice a lot of people having issues with the stock image. Flash the custom Roms...they seem to be working MUCH better..

[Q] Lollipop 5.0 camera not working?

After updating my Nexus to 5.0, the camera worked fine for a couple of weeks. However, starting from a few days ago, when I open my camera app, it won't function at all; instead, all I get is the screen shown in the screenshot.
I'm afraid that's all I can really explain about this problem, as I can't think of any other relevant details.
Thanks in advance.

Sometimes I get this annoying message when I try to access the camera, it says " Cannot connect to the camera " so what I usually do is reboot my device and then everything works again aha.
Glad it sorted itself out.
Same problem. Rebooted 4 times. Cleared cache. Still no camera
I have the same issue, tried the following
Reboot
Clear camera data
Reboot
Clear device cache
Reboot in safe mode
Reboot
None of that worked.
Tempted to try a new ROM and go from stock 5.0.0... See if that helps
I'm on stock rooted 5.0 and I have gotten this issue multiple times. Multiple reboots fix it temporarily but I can't figure out what actually triggers the issue.
I rarely use the flashlight pulldown, and haven't at all during the last few reboot cycles that this has still happened.

Recovered from boot loop but constant crashes with older ROM

I am helping a friend to get his One Plus One 64GB to work again after an OTA update broke it.
Initial Problem
Two days ago she started an OTA update which made the phone reboot constantly before even android started. Basically it showed the logo for about 6s then vibrated and restarted again. I later found /o/Android/data/com.cyngn.fota/cache/cm-12.0-YNG1TAS17L-bacon-signed.zip so I assume that this was what was installed.
The phone is completely untouched otherwise. She has no computer knowledge whatsoever and says she didn't give it to anyone.
My attempt
I was able to install cm-11.0-XNPH33R-bacon-signed.zip and cm-11.0-XNPH22R-bacon-signed.zip via sideloading. The phone started ok but was crashing all the time. I am not able to get into settings to activate developer settings (adb) because the crash notifications hinder navigation and after about 10s the whole gui crashes and I see the black screen with the hexagon loading logo. The latter firmware is worse meaning it crashes at a higher frequency.
The Problem
She didn't expect any problems and does not have a backup of her data. Thus I can't do a factory reset or use fastboot.
Question
Did I use the wrong ROM? There seem to be many variants. I haven't found any information which explains the differences.
Could I maybe flash a minimal ROM that would not crash to backup the data and than do a factory reset?
Is there any way to activate adb access without having to navigate to settings?
I've experienced your issues as well when helping another friend out, try using a newer version of cm11s, something like 44S /44R (i dont remember what it is) or 05Q, those should not have the issue and everything should work fine

The problem here is that you flashed an older build, going backwards like that is what's causing the crashes. Grab the latest build from here:

Flash that and hopefully you'll be ok.

Actually this is what I did in the very first beginning but I encountered the same rebooting symptoms like after the OTA update. Since it didn't seem to change anything I didn't mention it. I used cm-12.1-YOG4PAS1N0-bacon-signed.
Any other ideas? I am about to unlock it with fastboot but really would prefer not to delete all user data.

Rotation and many other thing are not working on android 10

Hi folks,
I've just updated my one plus 6 to android 10 and I already have many problems. The rotation and the automatic brightness are not working anymore. Plus, when you try to put your phone near your ear to listen to an audio message on WhatsApp is not working as well. Am I the only one with these problems?
Thanks
Same here.
Is this a bug or did I something wrong?
mine worked perfectly fine. but i find some issues where when i type on my keyboard it's little bit laggy. that's bother me a lot. so i had to soft reboot it
I get the same issues.. I'd fixed with factory reset, now everything works fine
I wasn't getting notifications of missed calls so factory reset. Then I couldn't access my contacts with the message saying something like, you haven't given all permissions. I downloaded another call app and gave all permissions. It worked fine, so I deleted it and gave all permissions to the OnePlus phone app (including location which I'm sure I never had to give previous). It now works...

Oh my... I don't want to do a factory reset ?
I fixed it by uninstalling Magisk via TWRP (there's now an easy guide to install it in Android 10), rebooting to system, check if the sensors are working again, and then reinstalling Magisk through TWRP again. If this happens again just re-do the procedure, an update will probably fix this.
my sensors went bad when first installing the open beta 30, but with a cache wipe in the recovery, everything should be back to normal again. Well, in my case it was so you should give it a shot as well

I usally don't post comments on this forum but i would like to thank you. I had the same sensor issues since Android 10 and it really grinded my gears..
Just wiped cache from recovery and voila, the auto rotate works like a charm.
Thank you very much my friend and have a great day! :good:
